Rain Immersion Therapy
Today’s podcast is a long recording of a rainstorm that happened last week in Toronto, which is July 2021, that’s the summer, 2021 years after Jesus. I would say my biggest disclaimer is that it would be difficult to listen to this episode while you’re out and about. You will probably want to listen on headphones to enter into the space. Beyond that I don’t want to prescribe what sort of attention you must pay to the sounds of this storm. In some ways it felt like a fraud preparing this recording, because you know, it’s not me playing music and trying to show off whatever skill I’ve picked up along the way in life. Yet when I sat down to edit and mix this piece I became aware that from start to finish this soundscape is just as poetic as any piece of music that I could write, which typically has some sort of battle between the ego and the self at play. The field recording is almost the closest thing you can get to removing the ego because the action or “doing” of the project is essentially surrendering to the power of the planet. I take my portable recorder, I hit record and walk away. Later on I listen back to the results, like developing film. ---- Like this podcast? You can buy me a coffee.

Tension
This episode looks at the idea of tension in music - the way that it's core to music itself, yet also has a troubling psychological effect on the maker. What we sometimes call Writer's Block in other industries. So how do we break through this tension?  Text your thoughts on this to 647-560-8454 which also signs you up to receive occasional updates from me over text which you can unsubscribe from at any time.

Memories of the Forgotten City
This week’s podcast is a piece of music called Memories of the Forgotten City, and it’s a tribute to the lost civilizations of the world like that of the Incas. The Gospel Show
When I started a podcast, I wanted to make sure that I spend time looking at different styles of music as a way of showing my appreciation for all the work that has happened in this amazing field of art. So this week I thought it would be nice to look at gospel music, but specifically black gospel. Tracks played on this episode (listen as a playlist):  Noah - The Golden Gate Quartet Stay with Me Jesus - The Chosen Gospel Singers  Jericho - Sister Rosetta Tharpe  Count Your Blessings - The Como Mamas Amazing Grace (Organ Instrumental) - Moses Tyson Jr.  Watch Sound Field's Episode, "What Makes Black Gospel Musicians So Skilled?"

Listening to the Environment with Darren Copeland
I had the pleasure of chatting with Canadian sound artist Darren Copeland about the art organization he operates with his wife Nadene Theriault-Copeland as they celebrate their 20th year in service to the community.  Learn more about the Absent Listener project on Darren's site, and visit naisa.ca for more info about New Adventures in Sound Art's work.  Like this podcast?  You can buy me a coffee.

Who is Mr. Tunes?
The mystery of a man who walked the barren landscape that is funky soulful music in Canada for probably a decade is examined in this week’s podcast. But there is some other housekeeping along the way, such as a public service announcement regarding how to put the turmoil of the world in perspective, and a quick listen to one of my favourites Raymond Scott. Music featured: Shape and Dillate - Elliott Fienberg (link) Portafino 1 - Raymond Scott (link) Chatting on a Pond - Mr. Tunes (link) The Sirens of Peace - Mr. Tunes (link) The Asian Secret - Mr. Tunes (link) Sound clip: A Dispatch From Outer Space on The New York Times' Daily Podcast (link)
