1.2 piecewise function

1.2 piecewise function

Evaluatting a piecewise function

Ex 1;

x < 0 |x-2| x >0|

solution;

f(0)=x-2

f(0)=101-2

f(0)=x > 0

f(0)=141 > 0

f(0)=-2

f(0)=4

Graphing a piece wise function

Solution:  The domain is all real numbers. The range is y > -4

My Notes:

y=mx+b=

M=Slope

B=Y intercept

m=-1

b=-4

1)y intercept =-4

2) use slope to find 2nd point

3)drew a line threw the points

4) erase the line to the right of x=0

5)>/< = open circle, </> = closed circle

Writing a piecewise function

Solution:

f(x) ={x< 0:1x +3x > 0.2x - 1 }

answer; m(x) ={x< 0:1x + 3> 0.2x - 1}

My Notes:

1)identify y-intercept (b)

2)pick two points on the line to find the slope (m)

3)substitute m and b into y=mx+b

4)identify the end point and the x-value

5) < = left, > = right
