Episode 37: Zealous Love

Love is the fiery, zealous nature of God. Sometimes people say, "God is love... but He's also holy," as though holiness is in contrast with love. God is actually holy love, simultaneously. God has a holy determination to see His purpose accomplished that is unmoved by what any human or spiritual being does. And also, His purpose is carried out through loving relationships with His people. Tune in to this episode for more from Pastor Joe McIntyre on this zealous love.

Episode 35: How to get manna in the morning

Spending time with the Father each morning could be the lifestyle shift you need to move your Christian walk from reactive mode to proactive mode, and super-charge your relationship with Him through intimacy.

Many Christians feel they should spend time with the Lord each morning, but schedule demands or personality types make it difficult to sustain, and the enemy seizes the opportunity to introduce guilt, shame, and condemnation. That's not from the Lord! The Lord is extending an invitation and opportunity each morning to His beloved children.

In this episode, Pastor Joe McIntyre discusses the various breakthroughs and benefits to "morning God time," beginning with his own journey as a professional night club musician and retail employee with an a-typical schedule. He then shares six different ways to receive "manna in the morning," based on different personality types and interests.

Episode 34: Forgetting What's Behind

Episode 34: Forgetting What's Behind

This episode is all about optimism for a glorious Church, and experiencing the fullness of God's glory in your personal life here and now (not waiting for heaven!).

Crucify the way of thinking that says, "God is mostly concerned about my performance -- He likes me when it's good, and He's not happy with me when it's not good." God does want us to live above sin and there is a healthy method and mindset towards repentance when we fall short. But first of all, He wants us to live above unbelief.

When we live above unbelief, we have more faith in the power of the finished work of Christ to make us accepted by God than we do in the power of our struggles to make us unacceptable. As long as we are mourning over our weaknesses, we are in unbelief.

The goal? To believe that the Father so wants you in His presence that He has made all provision necessary for you to live as though you'd never sinned, even as you struggle with your flesh.

Episode 33: Grace to Overcome Fear

Episode 33: Grace to Overcome Fear

God intends us to live free from fear. Second Timothy 1:7 says that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. Yet in our culture, we have been programmed to fear. Some fears – like fear of sickness or death – are felt more acutely and often drive our behavior. Others are more subtle, yet can still drive our behavior. For example, condemnation is actually fear of rejection by God, and if we're feeling unworthy we won't feel empowered to possess the promises of God. Some of us are also tormented by a fear of a prior fear returning, which creates an open door towards that very end! All fear is from the enemy and preventing you from living in God's fullness. Tune in to this episode to discover the keys to freedom.

This sermon – a special extended episode – is the entire first sermon in the eight-part MP3 series, Grace to Overcome Fear. Show notes and a full transcript are at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast33.

Episode 32: Forgiveness and Healing, Part 2

Episode 32: Forgiveness and Healing, Part 2

Listen to Part 1 here.

Why is it that some people get healed while others don't? When a person does not receive healing, the most commonly taught idea is that God, in His sovereignty and infinite knowledge, chose not to heal them. God obviously didn't want to, or He would have. But that idea does not hold up under an examination of Scripture. While there are some aspects to healing we may not have the answers to until we get to heaven, God's word tells us that there are some very clear things that hinder people from being healed. Forgiveness -- three facets of forgiveness -- is one hindrance.

Episode 30: How to Bring your Joy Back

Episode 30: How to Bring your Joy Back

This episode is part two of the last episode, How to Be Clothed in Power and Love.

Who, beyond the disciples, operated in the gifts of the Holy Spirit? It’s a myth that was just a few people. The early church was a supernaturally-empowered Church and we can walk in that same power and love. In faith, we must insist on receiving God’s fullness. We’ve been taught to receive the Holy Spirit – it’s an act of surrender, a yielding.

The devil’s full-time job is to get us focused on our circumstances and inadequacies. He will try to rob our joy to keep us from operating in and enjoying God’s fullness.

  • Why is joy important? Can’t we just “get through things,” knowing we will experience true joy in heaven?
  • What is our posture when listening to and reading the news?
  • What is your testimony in the midst of the bad?

This episode is pulled from a newly-available sermon series, Clothed in Power. Show notes and a full transcript are available at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast30.

Episode 26: The Two Realms -- Returning to God's original intention (part 2)

Listen to Part One

Man was created to have a relationship with God that’s in the spirit realm while living and walking in the natural realm. And the way he was going to have dominion on earth was through that spirit-realm relationship with God.

God’s original intention was for the spirit realm to dominate soul and body, but for some of us, our earthly experience does not reflect that intention.

Discover:

  • How do we shift our identity from rooted in the physical to rooted in the spiritual?
  • How should we consider our earthly responsibilities, in light of this?
  • What is the one fear that gauges our level of spiritual maturity? (And the cure!)

Episode 24: How to please God | Part 3 (Season finale!)

You are in God’s family. And under the New Covenant, God says that your sins and lawless deeds, He will remember no more. But there are three groups who have another message for you - one that reminds you of every shortcoming, weakness and failure -- 1) Your own religious mind, 2) The Church, and 3) The devil. You have this chorus of voices telling you that you’re not what God wants, that you're unacceptable to Him. And then we have the word of God that says that you're completely and totally accepted, and welcome in His presence.

People have a tendency to react one of two ways –

  • Try to live a good life in your own strength. Those who work and try really hard, with limited success, can be overcome with self-condemnation as they wallow in their failures and shortcomings. Or some actually do have real success and then feel smugly superior over everybody else – that’s self-righteousness.
  • Or, you can come into the light of the Gospel: The truth that says “Your sins are forgiven. You’re accepted by God. He’s begun a good work in you, which He promises to complete if you’ll just trust Him.” Right living is important, but how you get there is more important than just the outward living itself.

Pastor Joe concludes with a three-step process of humility that helps us properly frame our minds.

If you missed them, tune into part 1 and part 2. This episode is pulled from the Pleasing God MP3 series. A full transcript and show notes can be found at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast24.

Episode 20: Islam's Plan and God's Answer

This episode (part 1 of 2) discusses the seven mountains of culture, a concept first shared by Youth With a Mission founder Loren Cunningham -- Arts & Entertainment, Business, School, Family, Government, Media, and the Church -- and how Christians can apply our God-given authority, favor, and wisdom to affect change in these spheres. This sermon by Joe McIntyre was recorded more than 10 years ago but is perhaps even more relevant today.

Islam has done a good job infiltrating these spheres and it's time for Christians to rise up collectively and become active, awake and informed. We need to gain vision for affecting culture within our individual spheres of influence. But spoiler alert: affecting culture starts with serving, not being a bull in a china shop, and thinking beyond revival to reformation.

This episode will give you big-picture vision as a church and inspiration to apply in your personal life.

Episode 19: How to be unstoppable, part 2

Episode 19: How to be unstoppable, part 2

This short (15-min) episode wraps up part one and is pulled from Pastor Joe's MP3 series, Strong in the Lord.

The devil will have you believing that things are harder for you because you don’t have a certain gift or giftings. You'll think to yourself, “If I was like so-and-so, I would be able to be a good Christian.” But even pastors don't have any intrinsic gifting that makes them better able to stand in the face of trial compared to others.

This is actually GOOD news, because if the battle is the same for everybody, then victory is the same for everybody. Victory isn't easier personally for anybody -- and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with you that will prevent you from becoming strong in God and walking in victory and fulfilling your destiny. Let it get a hold of you that you cannot be stopped.

To be unstoppable, the Apostle Paul commands you to continually receive strength through your union with the Lord. That means, then, that strength is available, and perhaps we've been passive in our job to simply receive it. How do we receive it?

Additionally, the power to stand is closely related to the knowledge of love and our intimacy with God, knowing he loves us. Sometimes we kind of think of power in humanistic terms, just wanting to know where we can plug in the plug so we can get the electricity to flow.

  • How do we access divine ability?
  • How do we tap into power to be unstoppable?
  • How do we receive the strength to stand?

Episode 17: How are we to abide? Part 2

This special "throwback" episode was originally preached in 1994, but shares timeless truths. The full series is available in the Vintage Joe Vault. This episode further clarifies and reinforces the following from Part 1:

In John chapters 14 through 17, Jesus mentions preparing a place for his disciples, and that in his Father's house, there are many mansions. Many believers interpret this passage as a discourse about the second coming, heaven, and our future home there. Pastor Joe gets into the Greek (spoiler alert: the Greek translation for "mansion" is actually "an abiding place") and paints a picture for how we are designed to be God's abiding place, his new temple (mansion) here on earth.

Also discussed:

  • The proper balance between embracing the necessary (hard) truth of the fall and, simultaneously, the grace and the glories of redemption
  • Why the church has so often failed to enter into the realities that are portrayed for us in the scriptures
  • The posture for us to take when "in the wilderness"
  • How Martin Luther's original revelation that started the Protestant Reformation has been distorted in the modern church

Episode 16: How are we to abide? (A timeless sermon from 1994!)

This special "throwback" episode is pulled from the Vintage Joe Vault. It was originally preached in 1994, but shares timeless truths.

In John chapters 14 through 17, Jesus mentions preparing a place for his disciples, and that in his Father's house, there are many mansions. But what many believers interpret as a discourse about the second coming, heaven and our future home there is actually Jesus' portrayal of how his Father will abide in his followers, here on earth.

Pastor Joe gets into the Greek (spoiler alert: the Greek translation for "mansion" is actually "an abiding place") and paints a picture for how we are designed to be God's abiding place, his new temple (mansion) here on earth.

  • How have we missed God's intention for a closer-than-close, loving relationship with us NOW by writing off portions of scripture as for our future life in eternity?
  • How have we misconstrued the nature of God? (I.e., Jesus' loving nature prevents a harsh God from wiping us all out)
  • What do other people have to do with how we abide?
  • How does Father God redeem any earthly distortions we have when thinking of fathers?
  • How does a right view of Father God help us move from works-based faith to a relationship- and trust-based faith?

Episode 15: What About Job? Part 3

Whenever we begin to discuss God's willingness to heal the sick, one of the first questions raised is, "What about Job?" The Book of Job raises questions in the mind of the sincere seeker after truth and we will devote three podcast episodes to this subject. This is the third and final episode; listen to Part 1 and Part 2.

  1. What is the lesson of the book?
  2. Why does God allow suffering and disaster?
  3. Did God put Job in Satan's hands? If so, why?
  4. Does God "allow" sickness and trials to teach us?
  5. If it was God's will for Job to suffer for some mysterious, divine purpose, can we be sure we're not "another Job?"

According to 2 Tim. 3.16, we can profit from the book of Job. Tune in to this episode, pulled from Pastor Joe McIntyre's series, "Traditions that Hinder Healing." Full transcript and show notes are available at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast15.

Episode 11: Don't Blame God! Why God isn't responsible for evil (Part 1)

Episode 11: Don't Blame God! Why God isn't responsible for evil (Part 1)

Many people in the body of Christ don't spend a lot of time in abstract thought or theological musings; we learn in part from theological teaching we've received. But nevertheless, our ideas about God -- how we see God, how we perceive him -- are of tremendous importance regarding our relationship with God. One such example of a relationship-impacting idea is our beliefs about God's role in evil.

What Pastor Joe discovered in examining some widely held notions about God and evil is that they were "proof texted," meaning that an idea was proposed, and then a scripture was slapped next to it to prove the idea was true. By finding one isolated text, one can make an erroneous idea look biblical and right. Instead, one should compare an idea with the whole counsel of God from the Word, which sometimes paints a different picture.

Here Pastor Joe briefly examines three of five questions we must ask when considering evil:

1) How does God exercise His sovereignty? Is everything that happens an expression of God's will? Do men really have freedom, or is God controlling us?

2) Is spiritual warfare real and is it necessary?

3) How do we explain the existence of evil? Can God limit his control in the universe?

Part two continues in next week's episode with two more questions: 4) Can God change his mind? and 5) Can God Suffer? These episodes are pulled from Pastor Joe McIntyre's introductory sermon in the series, "Don't Blame God."  Each sermon in the series covers one of these five questions at length.

Episode 10: Today's Gospel vs. the Gospel in Acts, Part Two

Part Two of Today’s Gospel vs. The Gospel in Acts casts a vision of Christianity that operates with dominion – one that's based on and rooted in the resurrection of Christ. Many modern-day Christians experience fear as it relates to death and, separately, demons.

  • How do we grasp a life where death has lost its sting?
  • How did the early Christians demonstrate their victory over Satan?
  • Did those in the New Testament age question the reality of the demonic like much of Western culture today?

Episode 9: Today's Gospel vs. the Gospel in Acts

This episode, pulled from Pastor Joe McIntyre's Resurrection Faith sermon series, highlights the differences in the Gospel message we often hear today versus what was preached and demonstrated by the first Christians in the Book of Acts.

  • How and why did this original Gospel message get distorted?
  • How can we restore this original, glorious vision for what it means to be saved and follow Christ's example?
  • How should we think about Christians who evangelize through broadcasting the 10 commandments through a megaphone, condemning people as sinners who are destined for hell?

Episode 8: Do you have a warrior or passive mindset? Pt. 2

Episode 8: Do you have a warrior or passive mindset? Pt. 2

Everything in the Word is simple – children can understand it. The power of God exhibited in the Word is meant to be lived out through us, today. We live in a culture that exalts intellectualism and the mind. It's good to have a sound mind, and a sound mind can be used of God. But sometimes we reason our way into unbelief. We look at things from so many angles and are so busy analyzing that we talk ourselves out of doing anything. Our enemy is not our weakness; our enemy is unbelief.

As we begin to move into a warrior mindset and understand that the nobility and the high calling to which we're called, we begin to push back on the limitations caused by unbelief and say, Lord, you can do through me whatever you want. We become soldiers who know their place, their weapons, and are committed to seeing the battle through.

  • How should Christians exercise their spiritual gifts in everyday life?
  • What is the greatest thing any of us can do?
  • How should Christians consider theology in their own walks and input from Christian theologians?

Pastor Joe answers these questions and more in this week’s episode. A full transcript and show notes are available at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast8.

Episode 5: The Source of Sickness

Episode 5: The Source of Sickness

Sickness and disease are facts of life and inevitable occurrences for many people.

But is this God's intention, or do sickness and disease have another source?

Why do we get sick? Where does sickness come from?

In sermon one from Pastor Joe McIntyre’s series, Divine Healing, The Basics, he lays forth the biblical basis for sickness as being the result of the fall and coming exclusively from the devil.

Many in the church have been taught a concept of God’s sovereignty that’s not accurate or biblical, and actually originates in Greek philosophy, which underlines the unchangeableness of God. Yet some 17 times, the Bible says that because men prayer, God changed his mind.

As a function of God’s sovereignty, many falsely believe that “everything happens for a reason” –  that any sickness is the outworking of God’s plan and purpose. God turns situations for good because he's a good God, but this is no indication that He caused it. Time after time, the Bible tells us the opposite. John 10:10 is one example.

Episode 4: Just how much divine revelation can we expect to experience here on earth, before Jesus returns?

Episode 4: Just how much divine revelation can we expect to experience here on earth, before Jesus returns?

This is part two of last week's episode from the sermon "Lack of Knowledge" in Pastor Joe McIntyre's 16-part Finished Work of Christ audio series.

We don't so much need more knowledge as we need a deeper and fuller knowledge and understanding of what we've heard for years, but has not yet impacted our lifestyle. Increased revelation brings divine wisdom to know how to apply the Truth to our lives practically. But how much revelation can we as believers expect and contend for before Jesus returns?

According to the Bible, quite a lot. But there is cause for confusion. For example, some Bible commentators interpret passages like 1 Peter 1:13 ("Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ," NKJV) to refer to a future act of divine favor when Christ returns, while Pastor Joe unveils interpretations exhorting believers to trust in the grace of God being revealed progressively, day by day, here and now

Let's set our focus on looking to God for the revelation of His Son to be increased in us and to us. Continual revelation is God's means to build the church. The Holy Spirit is the mechanism.

Episode 3: Why Christ's atoning death is only part of the picture

Episode 3: Why Christ's atoning death is only part of the picture

Many in the body of Christ lack a clear understanding of all that Christ has purchased for them in His finished work. As important and as vital as Christ's death is, there's more to his finished work than his death. His death took care of the negative; His resurrection and enthronement took care of the positive. And they are two complementary poles of one finished work. If we just teach the death of Christ, the best we can have is forgiveness of sins. But we miss the full picture. A lack of knowledge is one culprit.

This is the introductory message, "Lack of Knowledge," in Pastor Joe McIntyre's 16-part Finished Work of Christ audio series. Show notes, a free PDF outline, and full transcript are available at www.empoweringgrace.org/podcast3.
