Humanizing Oakland Charter Students: Come See Us Before You Come For Us
In this episode, we speak with youth organizers (all charter alumni) and charter students that have felt attacked recently and they wanted their voices heard. The message was simple, they weren't billionaires, they love Oakland, and they felt folks that have never met them shouldn't cast aspersions on their families, schools, or communities.
Listen for yourself.
Students Discuss the Benefits of Charter Schools in Oakland
Val and Clarissa discuss life as charter school students and the benefits they have received from them. The students directly address adults that want to see charters go away and attack students that attend them.
Ep. 7: Discussing Blackness with Black Women in Bay Area High Schools (Guest Host: Jonathan Piper II)
In this episode, we give the reigns to Jonathan Piper II, a recent graduate from Skyline High in Oakland. He produced and wrote this show. In it, he dove deeper into Blackness through the lens of two Black women currently navigating education in the Bay Area. You don't want to miss it.
Ep 6: Quality in Post-Strike Oakland Education
In this episode, Jonathan, Cheyenne, and Kweko discuss the impact of the strike and define what quality is to them as Oakland students. The team goes in-depth about their experiences in Oakland education and act as critical colleagues as they offer ways for Oakland to snap its streak of not being able to educate students of color at scale.
These young people offer some of the sharpest commentary around Oakland education yet, EXCLUDING NOBODY (shout out to Jay-Z).

Ep 3: Working in Tandem with School Site Leadership & The Failings of Sex Ed (Emery Crew)
So this episode went a lot of places! Listen as Jayden, Talia, and Nessa, better known as the Emery Crew, reflect on their principal responding to episode 1 and working with them to instantly add their suggestions (Kudos Principal Goode)! The students wrestle with knowing they can actually change things in their school by speaking up and working together.
Also, Nessa, completely out of left field, shifts the conversation to the need to improve Sex Education in schools. Something that deeply impacts her and her friends inspired her to tackle a very complicated issue. All in all, it was an amazing episode so please listen, comment, and share.
