Indoor grow rooms have revolutionized the cultivation of plants, particularly cannabis, allowing for year-round growth under optimized conditions.

However, creating and maintaining these ideal environments involves navigating a complex interplay of factors, from temperature and humidity to light and air quality. Unlike typical office or commercial spaces, grow rooms require highly specialized HVAC design approaches to meet their unique needs.

The Unique Challenges of Grow Room Climate Control.

The primary challenge in grow room design lies in the precise control required over the environment. Plants are much more sensitive to climate conditions than humans, with specific temperature and humidity ranges needed to maximize growth and yield.

Additionally, transitioning from traditional lighting to energy-efficient LED options has altered the thermal dynamics within grow rooms, affecting heat loads and enabling multi-tier cultivation. This lighting evolution necessitates advanced cooling and dehumidification strategies to handle the reduced heat output and increased plant density.

High humidity presents another significant challenge: plants transpire water into the air, dramatically increasing moisture levels.

Grow rooms require robust dehumidification capabilities to manage this moisture without overcooling the space, especially during light-off periods when plants continue to transpire.

The Universal Hydronics Formula, often called the "Hydronic Formula," is a fundamental equation used in hydronic heating and cooling systems. These systems utilize water or another liquid as a heat transfer medium to provide heating, cooling, or both to a building or space. The formula helps calculate the energy transfer in such systems and is essential for designing and optimizing their performance.

The Universal Hydronics Formula is expressed as Q = 500 x GPM x dT.

Where:

Q is the heat transfer rate in British Thermal Units per hour (BTU/hr).

ΔT is the temperature difference between the supply and return water (in degrees Fahrenheit).

GPM is the flow rate of the heat transfer medium in gallons per minute.

500 comes from one gallon of water that weighs 8.33 pounds (the weight of water at 60F) times 60 minutes in one hour times the specific heat of water.

It breaks down like this: 500 = 8.33 lbs/gallon x 60 minutes/hour x 1.0 Btu/lb/F

Specific heat refers to the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of a substance by one degree Fahrenheit.

Please note that the specific heat will change if you have glycol or any other fluid than water.

This formula calculates the amount of heat energy transferred through the hydronic system per unit of time. It considers the temperature difference between the input and output water, the heat transfer medium's flow rate, and the medium's specific heat.

Using this formula, engineers and designers can accurately size components of a hydronic system, such as pumps, pipes, and heat exchangers, to ensure efficient heat transfer and optimal system performance. Additionally, it helps determine the heating or cooling capacity required to meet the comfort needs of a building or space.

Abby Massey, PE, PMP, LEED AP, is the Tax Incentives Director for Tax Talker and shares her years of experience with sustainability and energy efficiency, and the Inflation Reduction Act will walk us through the following:

What is 179D, How is it Calculate, What is the Process for Taking a client through a 179D Study, How do Design Firms Qualify, How do Contractors Qualify, Changes to 179D from the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act).

Here is a detailed explanation of Section 179D Energy Efficient Tax Deduction.

The Section 179D tax deduction is a compelling federal tax incentive for companies designing and constructing energy-efficient systems in commercial buildings. Specifically, Section 179D is eligible for work performed on three systems; interior lighting, HVAC (heating, cooling, and ventilation), hot water, and building envelope.

For properties placed into service in 2022 and prior, a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available for installing these systems, which results in 50% or greater energy savings compared to a baseline standard. There is eligibility to claim a $0.60 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in less energy savings. Properties placed into service in 2021 or 2022 are adjusted for inflation, resulting in a higher deduction rate.

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, properties placed into service in 2023 or later can now achieve a tax deduction of up to $5 per square foot for achieving 50% or greater energy savings. There is eligibility to claim a $2.50 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in a 25% energy savings, with an additional $0.10 per square foot for every 1% increase in savings.

Qualifying Projects. New construction, renovations, and additions to commercial or high-rise residential buildings most often qualify. At the time of construction or as part of an upgrade process, energy-efficient building systems must be installed that reduce the property’s energy profile compared to a baseline standard. The energy reduction requirement varies based on the energy-efficient system installed in the project. The baseline standard (ASHRAE 90.1) measures the energy savings changes depending on the year the project was completed.

Who Qualifies? Many companies can qualify to claim the Section 179D deduction. In addition to commercial building owners, other companies such as architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, energy service providers, and specialty contractors (mechanical, electrical, glazing, etc.) may qualify for their work on buildings owned by government and non-profit entities. In other words, the powerful savings potential is also available to those involved in the design and construction industry.

This video is eligible for PDH credits in most states.

Heat pumps have been in use for decades now. But why all the fuss lately around heat pump applications?

Two words: Electrification and Decarbonization.

Electrification involves substituting traditional energy sources with electricity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impact. It is evident in the growing adoption of electric vehicles, electric heating, and electrified public transportation.

Simultaneously, decarbonization minimizes carbon dioxide emissions by transitioning to low-carbon alternatives and implementing sustainable practices. This movement includes a shift to renewable energy sources like solar and wind and efforts to enhance energy efficiency and promote eco-friendly practices in various sectors.

Heat pumps are considered more energy-efficient than traditional heating or cooling systems because they move heat rather than generate it. They are environmentally friendly, as they can be powered by electricity from renewable sources. Heat pumps are increasingly popular for residential, commercial, and industrial applications as part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

In regions with extremely cold temperatures, it's essential to consider the specific requirements and features of the heat pump system. Some advanced heat pump models are designed to operate efficiently in colder conditions, incorporating technologies like variable-speed compressors and improved defrost cycles to enhance performance.

Overall, advancements in heat pump technology continue to address the challenges of cold climates, making them viable and energy-efficient heating solutions even in regions with harsh winter conditions. Regular maintenance and proper sizing of the heat pump system are crucial to ensure optimal performance, regardless of the climate.

Electrification involves shifting from fossil fuels to electricity as the primary energy source. In late 2022, the White House contacted ASHRAE to help prepare for the upcoming expiration of Title 42 (in May 2023) and the end of the COVID public health emergency. The government tasked ASHRAE with the job of creating guidance on how to operate buildings in a way to help prevent the spread of airborne infectious illnesses.

During the pandemic, operators of indoor spaces were completely unprepared on how to mitigate and combat the spread of COVID. Proper guidance on how to make indoor spaces safe from the spread of the virus was inconsistent, and many people used untested technologies and inadequate products which were deemed to be ineffective. As a result, a new standard on how to protect people from the spread of infectious airborne illnesses in indoor spaces was needed and ASHRAE became the guiding force behind this initiative.

By December 2022, ASHRAE assembled a SPC (Special Project Committee) under the leadership of William Bahnfleth, a former ASHRAE president, to serve as the leadership behind establishing the framework for the standard. By invitation only, a committee of industry experts and thought leaders, including Tony Abate, the CTO of AtmosAir, came together to work on outlining the standard.

The development of Standard 214 is a multi-faceted approach to address all types of environments, commercial buildings, residential, retail, healthcare, institutional and many others. The standard touches on many aspects of enhancing indoor environments to reduce the spread of infectious aerosols including:

• Infection Risk Management Mode (IRMM) – Establishes requirements for an infection risk management mode (IRMM), which applies during identified periods of elevated disease transmission risk. Authorities having jurisdiction can determine when the enhanced protections of Standard 241 are required. Resilience (the ability to respond to extreme circumstances outside normal conditions) in indoor air quality control design and operations is introduced.

• Requirements for Equivalent Clean Airflow Rate – Sets requirements for equivalent clean airflow rate target per occupant of pathogen free airflow, reducing the risk of infection.

• Requirements for Use of Filtration and Air Cleaning Technology – Provides extensive requirements for use of filtration and air cleaning (such as HEPA filters, air ionizers, or UV lights) to achieve equivalent clean airflow requirements and be cost effective and operate effectively and safely.

• Planning and Commissioning – Provides assessment and planning requirements for being ready for the times when there is an event with increased disease-causing pathogen transmissions. The standard has a building readiness plan, that documents procedure for assessing existing or new HVAC systems to determine if they are working properly and attributing to the equivalent clean air delivered to spaces.

The minimum ventilation requirements are those as published in Standards 62.1, 62.2, and 170. Also, a minimum filtration requirement is set for MERV A-11.

We spend about 90% of our time indoors, so it's important to ensure that the air we breathe is clean and healthy. Unfortunately, the current state of indoor air quality is not good. According to the EPA, indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Indoor air quality refers to the condition of the air inside buildings and structures, including homes, offices, schools, and public spaces. Several factors contribute to the decline in IAQ, such as inadequate ventilation, outdoor pollution, indoor contaminants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by everyday products. Pollutants like dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and chemicals from cleaning agents further exacerbate the problem.

Poor IAQ can have profound effects on human health. Research has linked exposure to indoor pollutants to various health issues, including allergies, asthma, respiratory problems, headaches, fatigue, and even more severe conditions like lung cancer. Vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions are particularly at risk. With people spending an estimated 90% of their time indoors, addressing and improving IAQ has become urgent.

Monitoring indoor air quality is vital in identifying potential hazards and implementing effective mitigation strategies. Real-time IAQ monitoring can provide valuable data on pollutant levels, humidity, temperature, and ventilation effectiveness. By monitoring these parameters, individuals and building owners can take appropriate measures to reduce exposure to harmful contaminants and maintain a healthier indoor environment.

Advancements in technology have provided us with powerful tools to combat indoor air pollution and ensure cleaner living spaces.

Here's a little bit about that.

Air ions naturally filter pollutants from the air we breathe. In naturally pristine environments, such as high mountain peaks, air ion levels tend to be much higher than in areas that are more highly populated and industrialized, such as urban areas.

These ions exhaust themselves cleaning pollutant-rich air. In indoor environments the problem becomes magnified, because gains in energy efficiency result in losses in natural ventilation — and that boosts pollutant levels in the air we breathe. A bit about Nanosox.

Nanosox is a product that offers a superior alternative to traditional metal ductwork. It provides even and comfortable airflow through fabric permeation and multi-row orifices, resulting in precise air throw and a tridimensional air dispersion effect. Unlike metal ductwork, Nanosox covers a larger area with uniform airflow and avoids blockage by commodity shelves.

The Nanosox system is aesthetically pleasing, with multiple color options that blend well with any indoor decoration. It can also be customized and individually designed. In contrast, traditional metal ductwork is disorderly and complicated, with various components and brackets.

Another advantage is that it prevents condensation without the need for insulation. The fabric permeation creates a cooling air layer around the duct surface, eliminating temperature differences. In contrast, traditional metal ductwork often faces condensation problems due to incorrect insulation thickness, substandard quality, or improper installation.

This system is hygienic and easy to clean, contributing to improved indoor air quality and meeting higher health and hygiene standards. On the other hand, traditional metal ductwork requires unique cleaning methods and tools, which can be expensive.

This fabric duct is lightweight, accounting for only a quarter of the weight of traditional metal ductwork. This makes it suitable for applications with limited roof load-bearing capacity, such as new buildings or renovations. Traditional metal ductwork, with its heavy weight and additional components, increases the roof load.

The system operates quietly, using flexible materials and lower air velocity, minimizing noise and resonance transmission. This promotes a better indoor environment than the loud noise generated by metal ductwork and air handling units.

Installation is quick and efficient, thanks to specialized cable and track suspension systems. Material waste is reduced, and the installation time is significantly shorter than traditional metal duct systems that require on-site fabrication.

Nanosox ensures reliable quality through large laser production lines and system simulation platforms. All products are manufactured in the factory to guarantee high-pressure resistance, micro-permeability, and other essential properties. In contrast, traditional metal ducts fabricated on-site lack quality assurance.

This system is environmentally friendly, employing synthetic fabric and green manufacturing practices. It is energy-saving due to its tridimensional and laminar airflow model. Here is a detailed explanation of Section 179D Energy Efficient Tax Deduction.

The Section 179D tax deduction is a compelling federal tax incentive available to companies designing and constructing energy-efficient systems in commercial buildings. Specifically, Section 179D is eligible for work performed on three systems; interior lighting, HVAC (heating, cooling, and ventilation), hot water, and building envelope.

For properties placed into service in 2022 and prior, a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available for installing these systems, which results in 50% or greater energy savings compared to a baseline standard. There is eligibility to claim a $0.60 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in less energy savings. Properties placed into service in 2021 or 2022 are adjusted for inflation, resulting in a higher deduction rate.

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, properties placed into service in 2023 or later can now achieve a tax deduction of up to $5 per square foot for achieving 50% or greater energy savings. There is eligibility to claim a $2.50 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in a 25% energy savings, with an additional $0.10 per square foot for every 1% increase in savings.

New construction, renovations, and additions to commercial or high-rise residential buildings most often qualify. At the time of construction or as part of an upgrade process, energy-efficient building systems must be installed that reduce the property’s energy profile compared to a baseline standard. The energy reduction requirement varies based on the energy-efficient system installed in the project. The baseline standard (ASHRAE 90.1) measures the energy savings changes depending on the year the project was completed.

Many companies can qualify to claim the Section 179D deduction. In addition to commercial building owners, other companies such as architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, energy service providers, and specialty contractors (mechanical, electrical, glazing, etc.) may qualify for their work on buildings owned by government and non-profit entities. In other words, the powerful savings potential is also available to those involved in the design and construction industry.

Psychrometrics is a branch of thermodynamics that studies air's physical and thermodynamic properties and the relationships between these properties. The word "psychrometrics" comes from the Greek words "psuchron," which means "cold," and "metron," which means "measure." Therefore, psychrometrics is the measurement of the properties of air, including temperature, humidity, and pressure.

One of the most essential tools used in psychrometrics is the psychrometric chart. The psychrometric chart is a graphical representation of the thermodynamic properties of air. It is a chart that displays the relationships between temperature, humidity, and pressure. The chart calculates the various properties of air, including the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy.

To use the psychrometric chart, one must first determine the dry-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer. Next, one must determine the wet-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer with a wet wick. These two temperatures are then used to locate the point on the chart that represents the current state of the air.

Once the current state of the air has been located on the psychrometric chart, it is possible to calculate various properties of the air, such as the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy. The dew point is the temperature at which the air must be cooled for water vapor to condense into liquid water. The relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor that could be present at the current temperature and pressure. Enthalpy is the total heat content of the air.

Understanding the psychrometric chart is essential for anyone involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems. It is also essential for anyone working in meteorology, agriculture, and industrial processing, where the properties of air play a crucial role.

The shortage of HVAC technicians is a problem that needs to be addressed, as it is causing delays in services and higher prices for consumers.

By investing in vocational training programs and increasing awareness about the HVAC industry, we can help solve this shortage and ensure people have access to reliable and affordable HVAC services.

The skilled trades, also known as the "trades," refer to various occupations that require specialized skills, knowledge, and training. These occupations typically involve working with one's hands and may require physical strength and stamina.

The HVAC industry offers a range of skilled trades that require specialized training and knowledge. Some of the most common skilled trades in the HVAC industry include:

1) HVAC Technician: HVAC technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in homes, businesses, and other buildings. They may work with various equipment, including furnaces, boilers, air handlers, and refrigeration systems.

2) Sheet Metal Worker: Sheet metal workers fabricate, install, and maintain sheet metal products, including ductwork, siding, roofs, and gutters. They use specialized tools and equipment to shape and cut metal, and must have a strong understanding of HVAC systems.

3) Pipefitter: Pipefitters install and maintain pipes that carry water, steam, or other materials used in heating and cooling systems. They may also install gas lines and other pipes used in HVAC systems.

4) Refrigeration Technician: Refrigeration technicians specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems, including commercial refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning systems.

5) Electrician: Electricians work with electrical systems, including those used in HVAC systems. They install and maintain electrical components such as motors, switches, and control systems.

6) Controls Technician: Controls technicians are responsible for installing and maintaining the electronic controls used in HVAC systems. They must have a strong understanding of computer programming and electronics.

So, what’s causing the shortage? Many HVAC technicians are reaching retirement age, and there aren’t enough young people entering the field to replace them. This is partly due to a lack of awareness about career opportunities in HVAC and the lack of vocational training programs in schools.
