Celebrations & Broken Hearts
In this episode, we discuss celebrations and broken hearts. Starting off, we want to celebrate the podcast, our growth, and our fantastic listenership. Caryn then goes on to share about the Nine Broken Hearts of the Enneagram, how each type experiences their hearts as broken, and how that gives rise to the Habit of Emotion (sometimes called the Enneagram vices). This teaching is attributed to Russ Hudson and was also transmitted to Caryn by Julie Harris.

Enneagram Object Relations or Harmony Groups - Attachment Types 3, 6, & 9
The Object Relations or Harmony Groups were developed in part by Dr. David Daniels and Riso & Hudson to help us understand how we relate to, connect with, and engage with the world. An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Attachment Triad (Pragmatists).
The Attachment Group is composed of Types 3, 6, and 9. Those with an attachment object relation feel satisfied if their needs (with people, situations, thoughts) are met, thereby securing a sense of self and stability. As a means of attaching themselves, these types adjust their ways to be consistent with important people and groups they want to be in good regard with. Fitting in, aligning, and thriving with others can be essential to these types. Attaching and detaching from others can also be used as an unconscious habit to prove one's importance and place.

Enneagram Object Relations or Harmony Groups - Rejection Types 2, 5, & 8
The Object Relations or Harmony Groups were developed in part by Dr. David Daniels and Riso & Hudson to help us understand how we relate to, connect with, and engage with the world. An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Rejection Triad (Relationists).
The Rejection Group is composed of Types 2, 5, and 8. Those with a rejection object relation feel as though others reject them. Since others don't care about their needs, they reject their own needs too. Consequently, their relationships deal with issues like not wanting to be touched or nurtured. In spite of feeling rejected, they believe they only have one gift to offer to prevent future rejections. As a result of these rejections, they develop a sense of self by offering their talent. There is contentment in accepting that one has many gifts to offer the world and that what they perceive might be needed might not be true.

Enneagram Object Relations or Harmony Groups - Frustration Types 1, 4, & 7
The Object Relations or Harmony Groups were developed in part by Dr. David Daniels and Riso & Hudson to help us understand how we relate to, connect with, and engage with the world. An object relation is how we influence or are influenced by something/someone else. It is how we express ourselves through other people/things as an expression of a particular parental wound. In this episode, we discuss The Frustration Triad (Idealists/Utopians)
The Frustration Group is composed of Types 1, 4, and 7. Each has an idea of how the world should be (and gets frustrated when it isn't). Those with the frustration object relation know what will make them happy, but they feel they seldom get it. They tend to become disillusioned with their happiness once they have discovered it. Consequently, they become frustrated as they begin their search again. Their sense of self is based on the pursuit of an ideal. There is contentment in accepting one's present situation and finding beauty, perfection, and freedom in what is.

Enneagram Harmonic Groups - The Competency Triad: Types 1, 3, & 5
In this episode, we'll be talking about the Enneagram Harmonics Groups continuing with The Competency Group Triad - Enneagram Types 1, 3, and 5s. Don Riso and Russ Hudson developed The Harmonic Triads (The Wisdom of the Enneagram). The Harmonic Groups address the coping style or conflict-resolution strategies of all nine Enneagram types. The three Enneagram Harmonic Groups are broken down into the Positive Outlook Group, the Competency Group, and the Emotional Realness Group. Types 1, 3, and 5 approach problems logically. In times of disappointment or conflict, their problem-solving approach is to approach problems objectively and unemotionally and have specific strengths and challenges when it comes to working within structure or frameworks.

Enneagram Harmonic Groups - The Emotional Realness or Reactive Group Triad - Types 4, 6, & 8
In this episode, we'll be talking about the Enneagram Harmonics Groups continuing with The Emotional Realness Triad (Sometimes called the Reactive Group) - Enneagram Types 4, 6, and 8s. Don Riso and Russ Hudson developed The Harmonic Triads (The Wisdom of the Enneagram). The Harmonic Groups address the coping style or conflict-resolution strategies of all nine Enneagram types. The three Enneagram Harmonic Groups are broken down into the Positive Outlook Group(2,7,9), the Competency Group (1,3,5), and the Emotional Realness Group (4,6,8). Types 4, 6, and 8 all want their feelings and opinions to be known. In times of disappointment or conflict, their problem-solving approach is to lay their cards on the table and get real real. Deep down, they want a truthful, straightforward response from others matching their own intensity.

Enneagram Triads: Hornevian Groups - The Assertive, Aggressive, Initiators, or Move and Improve Types 3, 7, & 8
In this episode, we'll be talking about The Hornevian Groups ending our series with The Assertive Stance - Enneagram Types 3, 7, and 8s. Also called The Aggressive Stance, Initiators, Action and Drive, or The Move and Improve Triad, The Assertive Stance are those types that move against people. These types focus on thinking and doing, making them highly outspoken, driven, energetic, independent, and ready to move into action to get what they want, but they repress their feeling center and struggle with coming across as demanding, controlling, and can act without thinking about how their actions affect people. They focus on the self, are future-oriented, and struggle with slowing down, processing emotions, learning from the past, and cheeking in or developing deep relationships with others and themselves. They tend to be natural leaders, entrepreneurial types, or work independently.

Enneagram Triads: Hornevian Groups - The Compliant, Dependent, or Dutiful Types 1, 2, & 6
In this episode, we'll be talking about The Hornevian Groups continuing with The Compliant Stance - Enneagram Types 1, 2, and 6s. Also called The Dependent Stance, Earners, Dutiful Types, Altruists, Cooperators, or Scanners, The Compliant Stance are those types that move towards people. These types focus on feeling and doing, making them highly attentive and responsible, but repress their head center and struggle with unproductive thinking. They are committed, hard workers, sacrificial, and responsible, but struggle with relaxing, seeking guidance and reassurance, and might judge others' efforts or contributions. This group might feel more comfortable working with others who are like-minded, inside structured environments, with expectations and responsibilities clearly defined.

Also called the Soloists, Strategic Long View Thinkers, Independents, or Contemplators, The Withdrawn Stance are those types that move away from people. These types focus on thinking and feeling, making them highly imaginative and introspective, but repress their body center and struggle with moving into action. They never feel ready, struggle with being in the present moment, and might feel more comfortable working or processing alone.

Using the Enneagram for Change
In this episode, we'll be talking about putting the Enneagram into use for real, personal, change! Personal change is the ability to comfortably demonstrate new behaviors that produce new results in your life, which in turn cause you to feel differently. Lee and Caryn ask, can you take Enneagram knowledge and make a real, long-lasting transformation in your life? We discuss why change is challenging, complex, uncomfortable, and a non-linear journey. We get honest about personal wins, failures, and talk about how we've seen our paths change for the better by doing the work.

Three Centers of Intelligence – The Head Center
In this episode, your hosts Lee and Caryn are expanding into "The Head Center." This thinking group, which is home to Enneagram Types 5, 6, and 7, is also referred to as the "Fear Triad." With these types, the head dominates, and they all take in life through their thinking and generally respond based on what their minds tell them to do. These types have a strong desire for safety, competence, and predictability.
All Head Center types deal with fear or anxiety. However, each type confronts or addresses fear/anxiety very differently. Type 5s tend to be anxious internally about the outside world intruding and fear being competent, so they can try to isolate themselves or gather more information to be more prepared. Type 6s long to feel safe but tend to be anxious and often explore worse-case scenarios. They can have trouble trusting their own inner judgments and often seek outside guidance or survey others in order to feel secure in their choices and alignments. Type 7s tend to deny or push aside their anxiousness by always keeping their minds and bodies busy. They fear being deprived, bored, not having options, and being in pain.
In this three-episode series, we'll break down how each of the Centers of Intelligence teaches us about our habitual responses or how we filter information: Instinctual (Gut/Body), Feeling (Heart), and Thinking (Head).

Three Centers of Intelligence – The Heart Center
In this episode, your hosts Lee and Caryn are expanding into "The Heart Center." This feeling group, which is home to Enneagram Types 2, 3, and 4, is also referred to as the "Shame Triad." A need for recognition and connection drives those who live in the Heart Center. They crave intimacy and love from others and, when they do not feel this connection, can experience deep guilt and shame, believing themselves somehow flawed and undeserving. We hope you enjoy this week's banter episode because we share an abundance of anecdotes!
Type 2s outwardly direct their feelings towards others. They are highly empathetic and caring, trying to earn the affection of others to avoid shame. This desire to meet others’ needs can distort their awareness of their own needs and emotions. Type 3s can be out of touch with their feelings, especially their shame. They crave validation from others to feel secure in their own self-worth. Through accomplishment, threes project an image of success that masks a feeling of guilt and shame that lives within. Type 4s internalizes their shame and uses it as a form of identity. While in touch with their emotions, they may dramatize their feelings to gather the attention of others and avoid deeper feelings of inadequacy. When they don’t get the attention desired, fours feel a deep sense of deficiency, shame, and emptiness.
In this three-episode series, we'll break down how each of the Centers of Intelligence teaches us about our habitual responses or how we filter information: Instinctual (Gut/Body), Feeling (Heart), and Thinking (Head).

Three Centers of Intelligence – The Gut Center
In this episode, your hosts Lee and Caryn will introduce you to the Enneagram's Three Centers of Intelligence. This week we're kicking off with "The Gut" or "Body Center." This instinctual group, which is home to Enneagram Types 8, 9, and 1, is also referred to as the "Anger Triad." The body center copes with their dominant emotion of anger in the way they respond to gut feelings or physical sensations. Type 8s express their anger outwardly, 9s deny, push aside, and/or likely feel threatened by these emotions, and 1s repress, try to control, and/or turn these emotions inward.
We hope you enjoy this banter episode because we go a little all over the place! Since the gut/body triad is the instinctual group, we briefly sidebar into talking about the three Instincts: Self-Preservation, Sexual, and Social. We will definitely be exploring these complex instincts again and in more depth in future episodes. In this three-episode series, we'll break down how each of the Centers of Intelligence teaches us about our habitual responses or how we filter information: Instinctual (Gut/Body), Feeling (Heart), and Thinking (Head).
