Marta Russo was a 22 year old young woman, and a second year law student at La Sapienza University in Italy's capital city of Rome. She became the victim of one of Italy’s most controversial crimes when she was was shot and killed in broad daylight by an unseen perpetrator while walking to class on campus in 1997.

She had visited Ireland several times as a teenager and bought the cottage at Toormore - a remote part of rural West Cork - in 1993 as a holiday retreat. While visiting just before Christmas in 1996, she became the victim of one of Ireland’s most well-known unsolved crimes
