Let's Talk About: An Interview with Glickman Prize Award Winner, Karina Aguilar Guerrero

The Priscilla Glickman '92 Memorial Prize is awarded to a Princeton senior who has demonstrated independence and imagination in the area of community service, seeks knowledge and purposeful adventure in unfamiliar cultures, and maintains strong academic work. The prize commends the qualities of curiosity in the world and commitment to the betterment of the world by recognizing outstanding past contributions to community service. The prize is awarded to encourage the student recipient to explore new challenges in the future. The prize winner is announced annually at Class Day.

Daniela is a recent graduate of the class of 2021 from Miami, FL. She transferred to Princeton in 2018 as part of the university's first transfer cohort since 1990. Daniela majored in Spanish & Portuguese with a certificate in Latin American Studies. She centered her studies, extracurricular activities, and internship experiences on migration politics and immigrant rights. Driven by her desire to support Princeton's growing transfer community and enhance the transfer student experience, Daniela co-founded the Princeton Transfer Association, serving as Vice-President. She also served as a Project leader for El Centro, where she taught English as a Second language classes to adult migrants in Trenton, competed with the Mock Trial Team, and worked as a Writing Center Fellow. Throughout her time at Princeton, Daniela interned at a migrant shelter in Oaxaca, Mexico, and with the American Civil Liberties Union's Equality Division on immigrants' rights.

In this short installment of Let's Talk About, we're interviewing the four recipients of the Fisher Award, a prize presented by the Pace Center to a Princeton senior who demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit, zest for life, love of people, and loyalty to Princeton through their work in the realm of civic engagement. In this episode, we're speaking with Kelton Chastulik. Kelton, a member of the class of 2021, has served as ao-chair of the Student Volunteers Council, a member of the Pace Center Leadership Council, a Senior Fellow of the Service Focus program, and as a previous Community Action Fellow. Off-campus, Kelton has carried out several initiatives for the betterment of his hometown with the founding and directing of the Chambersburg Holiday Book Drive and the Chambersburg to College group.

In this episode, we're speaking with Krystal Cohen. Krystal, a member of the class of 2021, has served as a project leader and executive board member for Community House, a Pace Center program that works with families to support underrepresented youth in the Princeton area. She is also an operations coordinator for Camp Kesem Princeton and the former community outreach lead for the Engineers Without Borders Kenya team.

In this episode, we're speaking with Sabrina Sequiera. Sabrina is a member of the class of 2021 who has served as a Project Leader for ESL El Centro since her freshman year. Throughout her time at Princeton, she has also been a member of Best Buddies, interned at the NJ Office for Refugees through Service Focus, and interned with Princeton Online Tutoring Network through the RISE program.

In this episode, we're speaking with Tobi Ayeni. Tobi is a member of the class of 2021 who has been working over the past four years to create and implement interventions that mitigate the racial academic and social achievement gap at Regis High School, as well as promote diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. In addition, he’s served as a Community Action leader, a Mercer County Big Brother, and a leader of the Woke Wednesdays series.

In this final episode of season two, Julie Wilson, class of 2023 will be conducting the interview. Julie is currently an intern with “Let’s Talk About…”. She has been working this summer to edit season two episodes and coordinate interviews. Julie is a sophomore at Princeton from Newton, Massachusetts. She plans to major in Psychology with a certificate in Spanish, and is also on the pre-med track. She also loves music, swimming, and working with young people.

Emily Perez is a rising sophomore from Chattanooga, Tennessee, hoping to major in Comparative Literature with certificates in History and the Practice of Diplomacy and Values and Public Life. Emily is currently working as a Community Action Fellow with the Pace Center, where she is helping to design a service focused pre-orientation experience for incoming freshmen, which will introduce them to learning and serving in the Princeton community. She has also been working this summer as a Summer Engagement Coordinator, facilitating small group discussions and activities with cohorts of freshmen to help them get to know each other and learn more about Princeton.

Katie Cappola is a rising sophomore from Haverford, PA who plans to concentrate in Molecular Biology or Chemistry. In addition to serving as a private cello instructor through the Trenton Youth Orchestra program, she is a cellist in the Princeton University Orchestra and the publicity chair for La Vie en Cello, Princeton’s student-run cello ensemble. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, hiking, and taking long walks across campus.

Allison Chou is a rising sophomore at Princeton from none other than Princeton, New Jersey. She plans to concentrate in the Molecular Biology department and is on the pre-med track. On campus, she is a part of the Conservation Society, where students discuss how they can better care for the planet. She also is a member of the Mathey College Council, volunteers with Community House, and is the treasurer for the club swim team. This summer, Allison is working with six other students and the Princeton Computer Science Department to help teach computer science to university students in Puerto Rico.

Daniel Alber is a second-year PhD student at Princeton studying Chemical and Biological Engineering, where his research centers around how lungs grow and shape themselves. This year, he helped to organize the Princeton Online Tutoring Network, a free online tutoring platform that matches Princeton students, staff, and faculty with underserved students in the local community. Within POTN, Daniel is the site coordinator for Corner House, a local organization that works with families to prevent and treat issues related to addiction and substance abuse. When he’s not doing research, volunteering with POTN, or working towards a career in academia, Daniel enjoys fitness, hiking, and cooking.

Kelton Chastulik '21 is a rising senior in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Kelton’s interest in education has driven his passion for service both at Princeton and beyond. He is the co-chair of the Student Volunteers Council executive board and a member of the Pace Center for Civic Values. He is also a Princeton Access and Inclusion Ambassador, where he works to create programming for first-generation, low-income students. Kelton recently received the Spirit of Princeton Award for contributions to the Princeton community in service. He is also a shot-putter on the Princeton Men’s Track and Field team and an RCA at Whitman College.

Katie Tam '21 is a rising senior from northern Virginia. She is concentrating in the Molecular Biology department while also pursuing a certificate in Journalism. Outside of the classroom, Katie is on the student board for Breakout Princeton, a program that provides immersive service-learning trips over fall and spring break. Additionally, Katie volunteers for Ascend Hospice, writes for the Daily Princetonian, and works with the Nassau Literary Review.

Senior Karina Aguilar Guerrero, of Ontario, California, is the 2020 recipient of the Priscilla Glickman ’92 Memorial Prize, given each year to a Princeton senior who has demonstrated independence and imagination in the area of community service, seeks knowledge and purposeful adventure in unfamiliar cultures, and maintains strong academic work. A Spanish and Portuguese major with a certificate in Latin American Studies, Guerrero is committed to supporting first-generation, lower-income students and advocating for the Latinx community. She has held leadership positions with the Scholars Institute Fellows Program (SIFP), which supports first-generation, lower-income students at Princeton; HomeWorks Trenton, an afterschool boarding program for high school girls in Trenton, NJ; and served as co-director of Princeton Students for Immigrant Empowerment, a student organization with the John H. Pace, Jr. ’39 Center for Civic Engagement. In addition, Guerrero led logistics planning and execution for IvyG, a conference for first-generation, lower-income students across the U.S. Both on campus and off, Guerrero is dedicated to enhancing access, mentoring underserved students, and building community.

Interview with Trinidad Rodriguez. Trinidad Rodriguez is the Parent Education & Community Outreach Coordinator with the John Witherspoon Middle School and the Princeton Family YMCA. She graduated from Princeton High School in 2000 and became a staff member of the Princeton Family YMCA in 2001. Beginning as an Assistant teacher in the Child Development Department she currently holds the title of Associate Director of Youth Development & Outreach. Trinidad holds an Associates degree in Child Development.

Interview with Elizabeth Rose Zwierzynski. Elizabeth Zierzynski (EdM, BFA) is the founding dance educator at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Trenton Central High School, a Title I school, in New Jersey. Within her district, she serves as a curriculum writer, professional development leader, mentor teacher, and a dance education advocate on Trenton’s Community Arts Team in partnership with the Kennedy Center's Ensuring Arts For Any Given Child. Elizabeth holds an EdM in Dance Education and a BFA in Dance from Rutgers University, where she is now a part time lecturer. She was awarded the New Jersey Department of Education's Distinguished Student Teacher Award and the ABT® Project Plié Teacher Training Scholarship. Elizabeth leads professional development workshops as a Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) Facilitator.

Interview with Andrew Seabert. Andrew is the teacher leader for Trenton Central High School’s Visual and Performing Arts small learning community. He has a teaching degree from Rider University and Fourteen years experience teaching art at Trenton Central High.

Interview with Dr. Jason Klugman. Jason is the director of the Princeton University Preparatory Program (PUPP), a comprehensive college preparation initiative that supports low-income, high achieving high school students from the Mercer County, NJ region. He has served in that role since 2004.

Jason earned his doctorate in Education, Culture and Society at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where he studied the process of becoming an urban teacher and taught courses in urban studies and the foundations of education.  He is an occasional lecturer in Princeton's Department of Anthropology. From 2004 to 2017, he was also a program associate and lecturer in Princeton's Program in Teacher Preparation.

A former social studies teacher at West Philadelphia High School, Dr. Klugman holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and teacher certifications in secondary social studies and English.

Interview with Tessa Lowinske Desmond. Tessa is an Associate Research Scholar in American Studies. She earned her PhD in Literary Studies (2014) and Master’s degree in Afro-American Studies (2005) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She arrived at Princeton in 2017 having most recently served as administrative director and lecturer for the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights at Harvard University where she helped to develop academic pathways, curriculum, and event series in Ethnic Studies. Her current research focuses on the history of farming in twentieth century America and migrant farm labor. She teaches courses on the American food system and on multi-ethnic American literature. An extension of her intellectual interests, Lowinske Desmond owns a six-acre farm near Princeton and is active in the local food movement. She has received awards for publicly engaged scholarship and outstanding service to students.

With over twenty years of experience working with homeless youth, he is committed to empowering people to create change within themselves and their communities through service. Ben serves in his own community as Lieutenant and President at East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company #2.

Let's Talk About: Health and Care with Heather Howard

Heather Howard is a Lecturer in Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School and a faculty affiliate of the Center for Health and Wellbeing. She also serves as director of State Health and Value Strategies, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded program that provides technical assistance to support state efforts to enhance the value of health care by improving population health and reforming the delivery of health care services. Her courses have touched on topics from the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, state and local health policy, public health and politics, and the social determinants of health.
