Randi Zuckerberg on Finishing Cocodona 250, Finding Joy in Pain, and Overcoming Challenges

When running 250 miles, mental lows and struggles are inevitable. But if you are able to find joy, happiness, and strength in those lows, no distance or difficulty can stop you.

That’s exactly what Randi Zuckerberg did when she took on her first 200+ mile race at the Cocodona 250 this past week. With 2 years of running experience, a full heart, and a powerful reason to train for and race this epic journey, Randi took on the epic challenge with a smile.

Even when the inevitable lows tried to stop her, she never backed down. She used the power of self-talk, team work, and self-belief to get her to the finish line.

And she learned so many lessons from her journey, which she shares on this incredibly powerful podcast.

Randi Zuckerberg is a mother of 3, ultrarunner, marathoner, Tony Award winner, radio show host, author, and an all-around amazing person who is now a Cocodona 250 finisher. And in this episode, she recaps the biggest lessons from her Cocodona experience, how she was able to overcome mental lows, going from 2 years of running to running 250 miles, how she trained for a 250 mile trail race despite living in New York City, and so much more!

If you are looking for inspiration and motivation, this is the episode for you.

Huge thank you to Randi for coming on the show!

- How to pace 200+ mile races

- Nutrition and hydration strategies

- Gear prep and logistical planning

- Mindset and mental toughness

- How to wrap your head around 300 miles

- What the course was like, how I battled the low points, and the big wins from the race

- The mindset you need to keep going, even when life doesn't go how you want it to go.

How to Gain Mental Toughness and Increase Running Performance with Alyssa Clark

How to Gain Mental Toughness and Increase Running Performance with Alyssa Clark

Every runner deals with mentally struggling and that barrier when in a race. Alyssa Clark shares her insights on the mental and physical aspects of ultra running, emphasizing the importance of bravery, self-belief, and community support. She highlights how mental barriers are just voices that can be overcome and how true winning is about personal growth, not just podium finishes.

Alyssa discusses the significance of consistency in training, noting that building an aerobic base takes years of dedication. She stresses the importance of patience in endurance training and warns against racing too frequently, as it can hinder long-term progress. Instead, selecting key races and optimizing workouts leads to better performance.

To navigate tough moments, Alyssa relies on her mantra, "This is what winning feels like," and encourages runners to find joy in the process to sustain long-term success. She also highlights the value of a strong support team and having interests outside of running to maintain overall happiness.

Ultimately, Alyssa’s message is about balance—embracing the highs and lows of running, taking breaks when needed, and maintaining passion to avoid burnout. Whether a beginner or a seasoned runner, her wisdom offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to improve their performance and enjoyment in the sport.

Huge Thank you to Alyssa for coming on the show!

My Journey to Sobriety as a Runner and Breaking Bad Habits (From The Juniper Lab Podcast)

My Journey to Sobriety as a Runner and Breaking Bad Habits (From The Juniper Lab Podcast)

As a runner, we want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.

But if we have bad habits (running related or not), those habits can drag us further away from the runner and person that we want to be.

For me, that was drinking and taking Adderall; two things that I've been sober from for years. And in this episode, I share my journey on how I did it.

I also talk about how you can break limiting beliefs, how to live the life that you want to, and how to destroy bad habits in a sustainable way, so that you can be the best runner and person you can be.

This is an episode from the Juniper Lab Podcast, which I totally suggest every one check out.

Thank you to Juniper Lab for having me on the show!

How to Stay Motivated in Training, Get Out of a Rut, and Make Training Enjoyable (Even When it’s Not)

Every runner faces that moment in training when motivation goes away. It becomes a bit harder to lace up the shoes and get out the door. And the stoke we had at the start of the training block is much less.

If you can learn how to break through that point in training, you can successfully nail any training block you put in, because this is the skill that separates the people who stick with their training, and those who don’t.

So, in this episode, we’ll share how you can stay motivated all throughout your running training, so you can enjoy the process, nail your workouts, and ultimately, stay on track towards that big goal you are working on.

In this episode, we cover:

  • How to get stoked to train (even in the moments when you don’t feel like it)

  • How to set up your training so that you avoid burnout

  • How to get inspiration instantly, no matter how you’re feeling

  • How to stay consistent with your training

  • What to ask yourself if you’re in a run

  • How to make training enjoyable and fulfilling

  • And so much more!

Thank you so much for listening!

How to Eliminate Self-Doubt and Build Confidence as a Runner with Sandra Mikulic

How to Eliminate Self-Doubt and Build Confidence as a Runner with Sandra Mikulic

We’ve all faced that negative voice in our life that tells us we can’t do something, or that we are not enough.

And sometimes, it’s caused us to make decisions that don’t support who we want to be, as a runner or a person.

But there is a way to be stronger than that negative voice, so that you can ultimately be the runner and person that you want to be, and accomplish all the big goals you set out for yourself.

For Sandra Mikulic, this was something she learned by overcoming her own self-doubt through finding consistency, believing in herself, and taking actionable steps to be the best version of herself.

And that has allowed her to not only run multiple ultramarathons, marathons, and run a 5K every day since Jan 2019; but it has also allowed her to live a fulfilling life where she truly loves herself.

Sandra Mikulic, a passionate Canadian runner and proud mother of four, is the creator of Run Your Life magazine, a publication celebrating athletes of all body types and abilities.

Sandra discovered her love for running at the age of 43 in 2018, making the shift from treadmill routines to running outdoors.

On January 1, 2019, she set a personal goal to run or walk 5 kilometers every single day—a commitment she has upheld without fail.

Sandra has participated in numerous races, including marathons and ultra-marathons, while using her journey to challenge common perceptions about body image in sports. By openly sharing her experiences and personal challenges, she has cultivated a welcoming and supportive community.

Inspired by this connection, Sandra founded Run Your Life magazine to encourage others to embrace movement and foster self-acceptance, no matter their size or fitness level.

Prepare to be inspired by this episode.

Huge thank you to Sandra for coming on the show!

How to Get Through Pain and Struggle in an Ultramarathon, with Hunter Leininger

How to Get Through Pain and Struggle in an Ultramarathon, with Hunter Leininger

In this episode, Hunter Leininger shares how he is preparing for the Triple Crown of 200s, how he is able to find the joy in suffering, and his biggest tips to mentally get through any endurance challenge.

Hunter's athletic career began at the young age of 7, inspired by his father, Jeff Leininger, an adventure racer himself. Determined to follow in his father's footsteps, Hunter completed his first 6-hour adventure race, marking the beginning of a series of groundbreaking achievements.

By age 11, Hunter became the youngest finisher of the 24-Hour Adventure Racing National Championship, a record previously held by a 23-year-old. He continued to push boundaries, setting world records as the youngest finisher in several grueling events, including a 3-day expedition race at age 12, a 4-day Adventure Racing World Series race at 14, and the 7-day Adventure Racing World Championship at 16. At 18, he was the youngest competitor in Amazon's World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, completing the 11-day race alongside his father.

His recent accomplishments include setting the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for running 200 miles across Florida, completing the distance in 55 hours, 59 minutes, and 45 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by David Goggins by over 14 hours. Additionally, he became the fastest person to run the length of Florida, covering 1,110 miles on the Florida Trail in 21 days and 11 hours. And most recently, setting a record for traversing Iceland self-supported!

Hunter's story is a testament to the power of determination, the significance of a supportive environment, and the relentless pursuit of one's passions. His achievements continue to inspire a new generation to chase their dreams, regardless of age.

Balancing Running and Recovery, Pivoting in Your Training, and Nailing Your Ultra, with Jen Higgins

Balancing Running and Recovery, Pivoting in Your Training, and Nailing Your Ultra, with Jen Higgins

Training for an ultra requires more than just logging miles and completing workouts; it also requires recovering well, so you can perform your best. It requires you to pivot the plan when things arise in life to make sure you’re still reaching your goals. And it requires you to be intentional in the way you approach your training and races.

That’s what Jen Higgins did when she set out to run her first 50 Miler and 100K this past year. And all of these things allowed her to be the first place finisher at both of those races!

Jen Higgins is a mother, a mental health professional, and ultrarunner who has completed the 100K, 50 miler, and 50K distances

In this episode, Jen shares how she was able to optimize her training and recovery to perform well in her first 50+ mile races, how she pivoted her training when life got crazy, and how she approached her races to get the best results she could get.

Huge thank you to Jen for coming on the show!

Jeff Browning on Mental Strategies for Ultrarunning, How to Never Quit, and How to Run an Efficient Race

Jeff Browning on Mental Strategies for Ultrarunning, How to Never Quit, and How to Run an Efficient Race

Jeff Browning is one of the greatest ultrarunners of our generation. Winning over two dozen 100-mile races, being on the podium of some of the hardest ultras, and most recently, securing an FKT on the Colorado Trail, Jeff has immense experience in the sport of ultrarunning.

Some of the biggest keys to his success comes from his mindset and how he mentally approaches ultras. And his approach isn’t woo-woo; it’s backed by neuroscience and psychology, which speaks to why Jeff is able to keep performing at a high level throughout his career.

On top of that, logistics play a huge role in ultrarunning. When it comes to pacers, crew, and time at aid stations, optimizing those things also can be a difference between a longer finish time and a PR. And Jeff has fine-tuned his logistical strategy to be top-notch over the years.

In this episode, Jeff shares practical tips on how to deploy proven and powerful mental strategies in an ultra, how to rewire your brain to not DNF in an ultra (even if you have before), and how to save tons of time in your ultras by mastering the logistics.

Huge thank you to Jeff for coming on the show!

Dialing-In Hydration, Flat Running, and Mindset to Win a Golden Ticket with Jeff Mogavero

Dialing-In Hydration, Flat Running, and Mindset to Win a Golden Ticket with Jeff Mogavero

What does it take to have an amazing race in a type of terrain that is a different style from what you’re normally used to?

For Jeff Mogavero, an accomplished mountain ultrarunner for On Running, he looked to answer that question by racing in the Javelina Jundred 100 miler, just months after completing UTMB.

And even though the flatter course was relatively unique territory for Jeff based on his past races, he was able to finish second place and win a Golden Ticket to Western States 100!

How did he do it? In this episode he shares his training, race strategy, hydration strategy, and mindset that all led to his special day in the desert.

We cover things such as:

  • How to go from mountain training to flat training

  • Optimizing mindset both in training and in the race

  • How to nail hydration (even if it has been a struggle point in the past)

  • How to execute a plan in a race, even when the conditions are tough

  • How to enjoy the process amidst hard training

Huge thank you to Jeff for coming on the show!

Javelina Jundred 100 Miler Recap: How to Run Your Best Race Ever and Get Redemption

We did it! At Javelina Jundred, I ran a 15:28 100-mile time with a negative split and came in 10th place male.

And I can now say that I got redemption after last year’s race that didn’t go well.

This podcast breaks down my training for the race, what it takes to improve on mistakes, how to train intently to get a PR at an ultramarathon distance, and how to overcome mental low points to turn a bad situation into your greatest triumph.

The point of this podcast isn’t just to recap the race; I put this out to inspire you to never give up on your big goals. Even when you fail along the way.

This result was years in the making, and I faced a lot of obstacles, self-doubt, and challenges along the way. But know that even if you face the same, you can overcome those things to run YOUR best race ever, get redemption, and feel fully fulfilled by the result you put out there.

Plus, we cover all of your questions on heat acclimation, nutrition and hydration, pacing, mindset, gear, and more!

And it goes way more than just saying you believe - you have to really feel it internally. And there's a process you have to go through to do that.

In this episode, I share exactly how to do that and how to build belief, confidence, and strength to accomplish anything you want to in the ultrarunning world.

This is a reposted episode from the Real Wellness Podcast, which I am grateful for them for having me on!

How to Prevent Muscular Breakdown in an Ultramarathon to Run Stronger for Longer

How to Prevent Muscular Breakdown in an Ultramarathon to Run Stronger for Longer

What if your legs were able to run for longer periods of time before getting tired, sore, or fatigued?

That'd be pretty awesome. Because that would mean you'd be able to perform better, run faster, and likely get the results you're looking for in your next ultra.

But the problem is that a lot of runners don't set their legs up for success in their training to be durable. And even if they do the right things, they do it in a way that leads to injury, overuse, or underrecovery.

That's why in this episode, I'll break down how you can set up your training to increase durability, prevent muscular breakdown, and run stronger for longer.

Thank you so much for listening to the show!

David Roche on Building Confidence To Run 100 Miles and Hit Your Running Goals

If you’re lining up for 100 miles, your mindset needs to be strong. And that requires you to take a deeper look inside yourself to make sure that you have the trust and confidence to take on the miles.

For David Roche, he exuded this confidence, mindset, and belief in himself when he won his very first 100 mile race at the Leadville 100, shattering a course record that stood for many years.

And he credits a lot of his victory to his mindset, consistency, and belief in himself that he’s built over the many years.

David Roche is a running coach, podcast host of the Some Work, All Play Podcast, elite runner, and thought leader in the running space who has multiple podium finishes and is now the Leadville 100 course record holder.

In this episode, David shares how he was able to shift his mindset to dive fully into 100 miles with confidence, how he was able to build himself and his abilities to do great things in running, and training principles that helped him to be successful at Leadville.

Huge thank you to David for coming on the show!
