The Red Room by H.G. Wells
Charged with spending a night in The Red Room to prove it’s not haunted, a man is forced to confront his darkest horrors. Will he survive?
Written in 1894 and originally published in March of 1896 in The Idler Magazine.
Best known for his books The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man, H.G. Wells had a prolific career as an author. So much so that Jules Verne dubbed him “the father of science fiction”.
While he usually explored the world of sci-fi stories, this story finds him exploring a good old fashioned haunted house, ghost story. Horror in short fiction form.

What happens when a mortal challenges the mighty gods? This week I’m reading a great short story from icon of horror, H.P. Lovecraft.
Originally published in November of 1933 in the Fantasy Fan Magazine.
Best known as the father of Lovecraftian Horror and the Cthulhu Mythology, H.P. Lovecraft, in his short life, became a master of weird and horrifying fiction.
In this story we see a man, Barzai the Wise, attempt to meet the gods. We find out what happens when man’s pride swells with self importance and we find out if the gods find him worthy.

But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way…. This week is a story from another legendary writer, Philip K Dick, called They Eyes Have It.
Originally published in 1953 in “Science Fiction Stories”.
Philip K Dick is an American writer known for his fiction exploring everything from altered realities to questions around the human condition. Possibly best known for his story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, which went on to become the sci-fi film classic Blade Runner.
In this story we get a glimpse at a masterful shift in perception with a humorous twist as he examines some common phrases in the English language.

A classic tale of a strange little town that may be hiding a much darker secret! Welcome to Dream Town by Henry Slesar
Originally published in January 1957 in “Fantastic Universe”.
Henry Slesar is an author known for his use of irony and surprise “twist” endings in his work and is most well known for his wide variety of work with the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock.
Slesar’s story, ‘M is for the Many’ was the first story Hitchcock purchased the rights to adapt, which kicked off a long and successful stretch of collaborations between the two.

Gods of the North by Robert E Howard
We’re venturing into the world of fantasy via a short story called Gods of the North by Robert E Howard. It’s a tale of a fierce warrior's encounter with the icy daughter of a God after standing as the lone, victorious warrior on a bloody battlefield.
Originally published in March 1934 in "The Fantasy Fan", then reprinted in Fantastic Universe December 1956.
Robert E Howard is best known as being the author and creator of the fantastica tales of Conan the Barbarian, and this story is a glimpse into other times in this world.
