Moving from Point A to Point B

Moving from Point A to Point B

“We came up with a solid strategy, added new services, hired more people and even restructured our remuneration scheme, why are our revenues still looking the same?”

Change and transformation happens ever so often. Organizations need to keep up with the times and therefore develop large-scale change efforts. When implementing change, reality sets in and desired outcomes are not met.

A study conducted by McKinsey (2019) illustrates that 70% of organizations who embark on transformation efforts fail to achieve the desired outcome. A study conducted in my company shows that 70% of failed efforts are attributed to work culture issues.

In this episode, I talk about hurdles and impacts of transformation efforts and how to ensure that organizations are on the right path to achieving its change objectives.

Favourites

Favourites

“Why does Adam get all the praise from the boss when we all did the same amount of work!? It’s so obvious he’s the favourite.”

I believe you have heard this type of statement at the office. It happens at all companies whether we like to admit it or not. Some staff are preferred by the boss, gaining additional perks, bonuses and incentives or preferential treatment. When favouritism occurs, it is important for you to validate if it is due to recognition of one’s performance standards or personal attachment.

Favouritism on the basis of personal attachment can be very damaging whether you are on the receiving or giving end. In this episode, we explore some of the causes as to why favouritism exists at the workplace and its impact in the company. Additionally, this episode explores how we can take a proactive approach to ensure this negative norm is minimised.

Question Everything

Question Everything

“Does anyone have a question so far? No? Does everyone understand? Ok, let’s move on.”

I am sure you have been in a meeting or discussion with your team and when the discussion pauses to open the floor to any questions, everyone seems to understand and the discussion moves on. As soon as the meeting is concluded and people start leaving the meeting room, questions about what was discussed surfaces in conversation on the way back to their respective work desks. Logically speaking, why aren’t these questions raised during the meeting where time was allocated to collectively remove doubts that may exist?

Sometimes you hold back asking questions either through verbal or written communication at the workplace. This episode explores the various reasons and the impact of not practising inquiry effectively. Overcoming these unsound habitual practices is possible. Tune in to learn how.

Gossip gossip GOSSIP

Gossip gossip GOSSIP

“Hey, what is the HOT GOSSIP this week?”

Gossip, such a common action and a common norm existing in our daily life. Do you think it is fun to spread news about other people? How do you react when someone in your office spreads wrong information and even shares his or her dissatisfaction or jealousy towards others?

Sometimes we are not aware that we have fallen into this trap by joining in on gossip. It is both time consuming and time wasting. Talking and complaining recklessly is not beneficial to anyone and ultimately affects the productivity of the company as a whole. Trust and morale is affected and begin to diminish. As a result, people lose mutual respect for one another and collective performance is negatively affected.

If you are spreading gossip or listening in on gossip, there is always a way to eliminate this unsound norm at the workplace. This episode emphasises on how to handle this unsound behaviour at the workplace.

I know best

I know best

Why do people keep telling me how to do my job? I have done it long enough to know what I am doing!

How often have you provided feedback sincerely to someone with the intention to bring about improvement in a workflow? How many times have you been faced with strong defensiveness rejecting your given feedback completely? How did that make you feel?

Have you ever been given feedback and gone on the defensive? Either defending yourself aggressively, with humour or non-verbally?

When you get into the habit of furiously defending yourself, you limit your potential to engage in a conversation to explore areas you can improve and develop yourself in.

This episode highlights the long-term damage defensiveness could bring towards our continuous learning and how we can reassess our perspective towards appreciating feedback and strengthening our relationship with others based on mutual trust and respect.

Speaking Up!

Speaking Up!

"I’ll keep what I have to share to myself, I’m sure someone else will bring up a similar opinion."

How often have you sat in a meeting or a discussion and you hesitate to share an idea or opinion that has popped into your mind? Instead we wait for someone else to speak up.

What could be the impact of not speaking up? We waste valuable time waiting for someone else to speak up on your behalf. Opportunities of engaging in a profound discussion that can bring about a significant impact are also missed.

This episode highlights how individuals are able to over come their fear of speaking up and increase their confidence level. As Mel Robbins puts it, “Confidence is the willingness to try”. At the end of the day, what’s the worst that could happen?

Avoidance

"What does that person want? Can’t they see I have better things to do?".

How often do we get silence when requesting information or feedback from another person? Take a step in the other person’s shoes and how many times have we avoided getting back to another person and AVOID having to convey uncomfortable information.

How costly is avoiding confrontation? This episode will highlight real-life examples of how I personally have benefited from people confronting me with uncomfortable feedback and how you we can change our behaviour into having more courage to ensure we minimise avoiding individuals.
