Losing 320lbs with Mike Gorman (@gormy_goes_keto)
Losing 320lbs with Mike Gorman (@gormy_goes_keto)
In todays podcast, I'm talking with @gormy_goes_keto about his journey through losing 320lbs. He has many great strategies when it comes to mindset, cravings, macros and external pressure, so this is a MUST listen for anyone struggling with keto. Mike's Bio: "I have always struggled with my weight. Sometimes very dramatically. In 2013 I had gotten from my heaviest of 540lbs to an all-time low of 210lbs, but within 6 months I had regained almost 300 pounds. I struggled to find a way to reach my goals weight-wise and help me break free from the cycles of food addiction that dominated my life. In 2017 I decided I needed to try again, and for once I realized the missing piece in all of this was my losing focus on my desire to stay alive, and to fight for that life. I had done research and the keto diet seemed most in line with my needs and also with the good whole foods I loved to eat. I was 470lbs in February of 2017 and just over 2 years later I am 222lbs. The magic of my way of life now isn't the weight loss, but the true sense of control over food and my body that it has given to me. I am no longer a slave to my appetite but feel hopeful that I am building a life that centers on more than my next meal. Running & Losing 60lbs with Keto - Emily Richman
In today's episode, I'm talking with Emily Richman, who lost 60lbs using a ketogenic diet, and is now able to run half marathons! Link to her Instagram: https://instagram.com/thisisketolife Hi Everyone, I'm Emily. I’m 33 years old living in Austin, TX. I struggled with my weight for almost 15 years. I tried every weight loss method I could find and never thought I'd get off the diet roller coaster. After reaching my heaviest weight of 180lbs in March, 2017, I had almost resigned myself to a life of being overweight. But I decided to make one last attempt and started Keto. Keto made me feel satisfied in a way that no other diet had. The way the diet regulated my insulin and blood sugar made me feel like my days weren't controlled by food for the first time I could remember. My new energy allowed me to incorporate exercise into my life, not as punishment, but as something I truly enjoyed that made me feel great. Since starting Keto, I lost 60 pounds, went from 42% to 21% body fat, and ran my first half marathon! My experience with Keto not only led to physical changes but more dramatically, it changed me mentally and emotionally. Realizing I had the power to change my life and become the person I always wanted to be has given me a confidence I've never had before.

#34: Getting A Second Chance - Renae (@run_renae_run)
#34: Getting A Second Chance - Renae (@run_renae_run)
In this episode, it is my pleasure to be talking with Renae: Renae has been very active all her life, being a competitive athlete in Swimming, Surf Lifesaving, triathlons, Volleyball, weight training and body building. Her active lifestyle was the catalyst for her interest in health which lead to her becoming a personal trainer while doing her first university degree to become a Physiologist. In her career, she developed a passion for preventative health and continued working at a community level and subsequently obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion and a Master in Public Health. Doing this all the whilst, continuing her personal training as a passion and instructing group fitness classes such as Body Pump, RPM, Body Attack, Thump Boxing and boot camps, she then decided to compete in body building figure competitions. However, although looking fantastic and being extremely fit, this ended up having a negative effect on her body, metabolic damage and negative food association. On 2 January 2013 her life dramatically changed when she contracting Meningitis (only 3 weeks after being made redundant) and ending up being in ICU in hospital and critically ill after her heart actually stopped. Recovery from meningitis was a very mixed and difficult road, after initially feeling “ok” and wanting to get back to training proved very difficult physically and mentally due to post viral complications she developed. Some days she was unable to even walk 100m, was in pain and bedridden, others she felt fine. Coupled with the fact of still being without work, after 3 months Renae made the hard decision for her health to move back home to her parents to continue to recover, not realising just how sick she had been, was, and was going to continue to be over the coming few years. Wanting to get back to a routine and a career, she decided to go back to University to complete, yet another degree, this time in Accounting and help run the family accounting business. Over these few years her health was extremely erratic but kept putting things down to “being older” etc. Ultimately she suffered multiple bouts of pneumonia (six in fact), extreme fatigue, dizzy spells including actually passing out, her insomnia was exacerbated by multiple doses of prednisone and other antibiotics, constant fatigue, her post nasal drip got worse, developed photosensitivity, extreme sugar cravings, hormonal imbalances, very high cortisol levels which resulted in adrenal fatigue, stomach upsets, multiple shingles outbreaks, weekly migraines, put on 20kgs and more! Yet, continued to “try” to maintain a healthy life going back to her competition prep diet, her own personal training knowledge by eating the food pyramid and routine training. Nothing was working and she was giving up hope after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, borderline fibromyalgia and was given a prescription for SSRI’s, and at this stage she was just about to hit 100kgs. Refusing to take the SSRI’s and after binging some podcasts and information from ATP Science where the ketogenic diet was mentioned - a trigger was set and she decided that it’s a last resort and its worth a try because it can’t make her any worse! After doing extensive research reading literally everything by Dr Dom D’Agostino, Mark Sisson, Dr Jason Fung, Keto Connect’s and Thomas Delaurer YouTube channels, she was piecing all her physiology knowledge and ATP Science’s podcast information together for one massive lightbulb moment and started her keto life on 8 February 2018. Almost 10 months later Renae is migraine free (yes not one single migraine), totally chronic fatigue-free, has no post nasal drip, no more dizzy spells, awesome gut health, adrenal’s repairing, hormones balanced, has completed her first half marathon in over 15 years in a keto state, had NO, yes no, DOMS or muscle soreness or injury, and has lost 20kgs.

DD #19: How the keto diet reduces inflamation
DD #19: How the keto diet reduces inflamation
STUDY: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5981249/ A ketogenic diet can: 1 - Decreased reactive oxygen species, (ROS) which are known to contribute to inflammation 2 - Increased adenosine, a natural chemical that is known to fight inflammation and act as a pain reliever 3 - Alleviate IBS (type of inflammation) by a reduction in gluten 4 - Removal of sugar, which releases cytokines, which cause inflammation 5 - If dairy free, can reduce inflammation through removal of lactose intolerance Neurodegenerative diseases: Since 2008 it has become clear that a low carbohydrate diet causes an increase of KETONE BODIES serum levels, paralleled by a reduction in several inflammatory parameters, and that KD allows neuroprotection for brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases A randomized controlled dietary intervention trial was done on 40 overweight subjects aged 18–55 years, fed with a diet very low in carbohydrate or an isocaloric diet low in fat for 12 weeks. Subjects fed with KD developed a mild ketosis and showed weight loss, decreased adiposity, and an improved glycaemic control as well as an improved insulin sensitivity. Both diets significantly decreased the concentration of several serum inflammatory markers, but there was an overall greater anti-inflammatory effect associated with KD The ketogenic diet showed a reduction in TNF-alpha, interleukin-8 (IL-8), (MCP-1), (PAI-1), (ICAM-1), while these markers showed a little change in the subjects fed with a low fat diet. This suggests that it is the macronutrient composition, not the weight loss or the caloric reduction the real responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity Several neurodegenerative diseases are interconnected by shared neurotoxic mechanisms related to inflammatory mechanisms such as cytokine release, neurotrophin synthesis inhibition, release of NO and CO, which are potentially harmful to surrounding tissues In response, the cells provide endogenous mechanisms tending to neutralize the molecules responsible for inflammatory damage A winning strategy to attempt to block neuroinflammation may consist in the enhancement of endogenous anti-inflammatory programs. One of the most promising approaches seems to be the ketogenic diet The ketogenic diet has shown to decrease the production of Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) and therefore the βamyloid peptide A ketogenic diet can activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) which decreases systemic inflammation βHB, one of the main substances detected in the blood after following a ketogenic diet, is able to cross the BBB thanks to the specific expression of its transporter MCT1 on endothelial cells. But after its entrance into the brain, β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) not only provides energy but activates the receptor hydroxy-carboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2), which lowers neuroinflammation The activation of HCA2 by ketogenic diet was shown to induce a neuroprotective phenotype in bone-marrow derived macrophages that infiltrate the brain βHB mediated the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated human monocytes leading to a reduced production of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) without significantly affecting tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels Which Foods Cause The Most Inflammation: Processed foods that are packaged and refined. High-GI foods Refined seed oils, corn, safflower, soybean oils Dairy Coffee and alcohol

#30: Epilepsy And The Ketogenic Diet with Brian Williamson (KetoVangelist)
#30: Epilepsy And The Ketogenic Diet with Brian Williamson (KetoVangelist)
Today, I’m honoured to be interviewing Brian Williamson from https://www.ketovangelist.com/ Brian is a 40-something husband and father of three. He’s been active his whole life (running, martial arts, lifting, etc.), but wasn’t always been healthy. He topped the scales at 270 pounds (I’m 6’2″). His journey toward a ketogenic lifestyle began with some research into methods to alleviate the affects of epilepsy (one of his kids has epilepsy). Ketogenic diets have been used for close to 100 years for helping people with epilepsy. That research led him to discover the science behind the ketogenic way of life, and allowed me the tools needed to accomplish the health and fitness goals he wanted achieve. By adopting the ketogenic way of life, Brian has lost 60 pounds (so far), improved his mental and physical health, and started enjoying life. https://ballisticketo.com/ https://www.ketocon.org/

Mini Episode: Keto Post Workout Recovery
Mini Episode: Keto Post Workout Recovery
In this episode, I talk a little about my thoughts on post-workout strategies when exercising on the ketogenic diet. Great books to read regarding the science behind all of this: The Art And Science Of Low Carbohydrate Performance Mike Mutzel’s thoughts on intra workout carbs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s7Xwo2WAlA Recovery is the key to progression within endurance training. If you are training, and not fully recovering, then you’re going to be putting yourself at risk of injury and overtraining. There are so many ways to recover, but the best way to recover your legs from a long or hard run is to use a combination of the most Cold Therapy By jumping into a cold shower or pool post workout is a great way to reduce DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). If you have access to an ice bath, this is even better. Not only does this help with muscle recovery, but I’ve also found that it helps recover joints that might be sore. Foam Rolling / Stretching The most effective foam rolling I’ve found is on the calves (sitting position, one leg on top of the other, rolling over your calf muscle), hamstrings, quads (superman rolling over your quad muscles), and a hip flexor stretch (by kneeling, and pushing forward through your front knee and maintaining a tall upright posture). Post Workout Food Aside from replenishing your hydration levels (which is also important), following a ketogenic diet means that you’ll need to be eating enough fat to be sustaining energy requirements, so I usually finish a run by eating eggs, with either smoked salmon, bacon, avocado or even bulletproof coffee. Keep it simple. Note on carbohydrates after exercise: • Consuming carbohydrates post workout rapidly decreases fatty acid oxidation in the muscles, thereby interfering with keto adaptation, and diminishes the beneficial effects of exercise on insulin sensitivity. • Avoiding blood sugar and insulin spikes can lessen the stress response to exercise • Finnish researchers - The post marathon Paradox – more insulin resistance 3 days post marathon. • Consuming carbs post workout can also have a rebound effect resulting in low blood sugar and stress responses that will release additional epinerpherine and cortisol, which can hinder recovery. • By elevating insulin levels post exercise with fast acting carbs can point glucose into fat storage. • Membrane highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) is linked with insulin sensitivity, so reduction in these essential fatty acids within the muscle membranes could impair insulin sensitivity. Keto adapted athletes are better protected against this damage. • When you burn oxygen, your body creates Reactive Oxygen Species which damages HUFA membranes. Keto diet has shown to have an increased amount of HUFA to start with. • Consuming enough Omega 3 in the diet maintains optimum tissue levels of HUFA • Less generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) better preservation of highly unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes • Higher ketone levels means less mitochondrial ROS production, and increases in antioxidant defences. • Less metabolic stress, improved fuel flow and healthier membranes means faster recovery from exercise and less inflammation, Less immunosuporession, Less gasto-intestinal distress, less insulin resistance.

In this podcast, it is my pleasure to be interviewing Jimmy and Christine Moore. Jimmy Moore is a powerhouse of information when it comes to the ketogenic diet, being the author of many famous books including Keto Clarity, Cholesterol Clarity and many more, plus the host of the longest-running and top-ranked Itunes health podcast, the Livin’ La Vida Low Carb Show. We had such a blast talking about digestive issues, the community of people surrounded by this book, common issues that Christine notices when she sees patients, and some of those common fixes as well, plus a whole lot more. Real Food is something that is near and dear to my heart, along with adding a few keto treats, so I recommend checking out all their information over at realfoodketo.com and Stick around to the end of the podcast where we talk about some of the first steps you can take with Real Food Keto.

Mini Episode: Keto Electrolytes and Sports Nutrition
Mini Episode: Keto Electrolytes and Sports Nutrition
If you’re eating a ketogenic/low carb style diet, you might be wondering if you need to take anything other than water with you on your training runs. From experience, I use around 2 serves of electrolytes per hour, however, you should try to work out what amount works for you on your medium runs first. If you live in Australia, here are some common brands that make great low carb electrolytes: - Endura (Low Carb Fuel) - High5 Zero - Nuun Hydration If you live in America, then these are your common options: - Dr Bergs Electrolyte Powder - Zipfizz - Nuun Hydration - Ketolytes You can make your own electrolytes by mixing Diet Salt (Nu-Salt) and a little Lemon Juice together if you’re on a budget. On the longer runs, I suggest making some type of nut butter and buying some reusable food pouches to keep it in. A few suggestions on different nuts you could use would be Almonds, Cashews or Macadamia Nuts. If you don’t have a food processor and want to save some time, here are some options that you can purchase pre-packaged for ease: - Justin’s Classic Almond Butter - FBomb Nut Butter - YumButter - Artisana Foods Almond Butter

Mini Episode - Heart Rate Zones For Low Carb Athletes
Mini Episode - Heart Rate Zones For Low Carb Athletes
Training for long-distance events requires a solid foundation, and to build a foundation that you can rely upon, you are going to have to put in the effort required to stimulate change in your body. Luckily, this change occurs by unconventionally slowing down your running speed, not necessarily increasing it. There is a heart rate range where your body burns a large amount of fat for fuel, and little amounts of sugar (also known as muscle glycogen). Understanding this range will help you tap into your fat stores and save your glycogen reserves for the tail end of your run. If you don’t have a device that can detect your heart rate whilst running (like a Garmin, Fitbit etc), then you can simply train at a pace that you could easily talk to a running partner at, without any heavy breathing or panting. If you DO have a heart rate monitor, then read on. For long and some medium runs, you are going to be using the following zone to build your aerobic capacity and endurance level. This zone is called the MAF zone, which was developed by Phil Maffetone. It stands for Maximum Aerobic Function, and you must be running below this number to acheive maximum endruance: 180 – [YOUR AGE] = AEROBIC HEART RATE The following calculation is simple, but there are a few things to consider: 1. If you have been sick more than 2 times in the past year, or a taking any medication, subtract 5 from that number. 2. If you have been training consistently with progression in your training for the past 2 years without injury, add 5 to that number.

In this episode, It’s my pleasure to interview Vanessa Spina Vanessa is the author of her current Best Selling Keto Essentials and is an avid and passionate international speaker about the ketogenic diet and the founder of Ketogenic Girl. When she started what she thought was proper Keto she began to strangely gain weight. She started first on her own and then was following ketogenic meal plans from a source she trusted so gaining weight was the last thing she expected to happen. She knew something was off- clothes were somehow all shrinking... simultaneously. I was doing what I thought was a good Keto diet so I didn't ever expect to gain 20 lbs. Since then, she has refined the process of the ketogenic diet, how it works not only for her but also for the people who join the 28-day ketogenic girl challenge. In this interview, we talk about how she transitioned from finance in the world of health and nutrition, how much work it takes to create a cookbook (including 12 iterations of a particular recipe), how a certain food group may be the reason why your weight loss is stalling, and the things she has learned since 2004 about the ketogenic diet. This episode was so easy, because Vanessa also has her own podcast called Fast Keto, but make sure you stick around to the end where she gives you some really handy tips on how to make sure your ketogenic journey is sustainable.

#6 - Fat Adapted Ultra Running, Fuel For Elite Racing - Zach Bitter
In this episode, I’m interviewing the Endurance Athlete and coach, Zach Bitter. Zach currently holds the American 100-mile record, and the 12 hour World Record. As you might have guessed, he’s driven to find his limitations in a variety of environments and help others find theirs. In this interview, we discuss everything from the psychology of competing in endurance races such as his recent western states 100, how he is able to sustain the impact that those distances can have on your body, through to the high-fat ketogenic approach to nutrition he follows in order to fuel his racing efforts. Zach is such a humble, well-spoken guy, with a lot of expertise not only in the world of ultra-running but in managing racing and nutrition for sustainable outcomes. I’m so honored to be interviewing someone so physically and mentally tough like Zach, so make sure you stick around to the end where he gives some really helpful advice about getting into your first ultra-marathon. Questions Start with a personal story that you would be willing to share (Maybe how you ran into someone on the track? / How you helped someone else during a race?) How did you get started? Finding your strengths, can you explain that feeling? People who have trouble sleeping / energy swings are usually prescribed exercise, but for someone like yourself who trains so often, can you explain the motivation behind the high fat approach to your running and how that effected your sleep? Tell us about the Western States 100 – With 18,000f of elevation, steep Start and middle, from what I could see from your splits, you just kept getting better. The psychology of running can make or break potential during a race. How does looking back on the training motivate you to dig deep? And how does community inspire you to push harder? As a high fat ultra-runner, do you monitor your training load vs your carbohydrate intake? Do you need to count macros? Or has this become intuitive? You’re also a coach, what are some of the common mistakes your see your clients doing that might be stunting their progress? You’ve done so many interviews in the past, including your podcast with Joe Rogan. You’re such a well-spoken guy, so does it feel like you’re right at home with your podcast “Human Performance Outliers” with Shawn Baker (who’s also been on the Joe Rogan Podcast) Shorter Questions What’s your favourite keto food? What’s your favourite style of training run? What’s your least favourite keto food? What’s your least favourite training run? Who are you currently inspired by? Who is your number 1 supporter? Ultra-distance aside, do you think a 2-hour marathon is possible? What book or video you’ve watched recently inspired you? What music have you been listening to recently? (do you find music puts you off) Ending Question: What would you tell someone transitioning from a marathon into an ultra-marathon, and what wouldn’t you tell them? Goals – ride through Europe, three peaks challenge Melbourne, and recently this marathon. How I got into the ketogenic diet, King of bananas implemented during my three peaks training, got a six pack but hit walls all over the place, and decided to put it on the back burner for a while. Training: Common mistakes I have experienced/see people doing 3 runs per week 1 interval run 1 tempo run 1 long run Bike rides Core workouts Changes? So, how did the race go? Fast Half (too fast) Slow middle, hit a wall around 25kms Last 7 km finished well Last 2 km I was finally overtaking others Nutrition for the race Pre-race almond butter packets and 1 coffee 4 scoops of low carb fuel by Endura 1 packet of almond butter mixed with MCT oil Water at most aid stations after 10kms A small amount of Endura at aid stations 30kms and 35kms 2 bottles of water and a high protein bar. (straight away) Home – scrambled eggs with butter, ½ avocado, and some camembert. Final Thoughts – Trickle in carbs using a Zach Bitter Approach. Pacing: Fast half marathon, which felt easy. Burnt through too much glycogen, which resulted in a 25km wall Pace went from under 6min km to 6:30, 7, 7:30, at times 8mins Once I got to the 30km mark, I was able to get my heart rate down to Maff zone, sit in around 7:30min km Until the last 2kms which I finished in under 6min km. Shorter Questions What’s your favorite keto food? - Eggs What’s your favourite style of training run? – Either a long run that pushes your limits, or a short fast interval run which gives you a runner’s high What’s your least favourite keto food? – I don’t have one because I grew up in a large family, which means if you don’t eat it, there isn’t anything else. #2: Fighting Cholesterol Issues with Keto - Aaron Duprey (A.D. Keto)
For my second episode, I’m interviewing Aaron Duprey. He’s a father to fraternal twin 16-year-old boys Peter and William, and 12-year-old daughter Caroline. Currently aged 44, Aaron has been married to his wife Sara for 20 years this September. He grew up in the very small town of Morristown, New York, which is right on the Canadian border, and his graduating class had only 30 kids. He went to college at SUNY Cortland, majoring in communications. He’s been editing video for a living since 1997 in Boston Massachusetts and the Albany area of New York, which gives him some nifty tricks for his Youtube channel that we’ll touch on in today’s episode. Aaron started the ketogenic diet in January of 2017, and has lost around 65 lbs, which is around 30kgs. He’s been maintaining his desired weight since November of 2017. As well as being a huge part of the ketogenic Instagram community, Aaron also has a Youtube channel which he started in July of 2017, where he does Keto eating vlogs, product reviews, and the occasional recipe. Aaron and I also share a common interest in standing almost a head taller than most people, coming in at 6f 3, and myself 6,5 respectively. You’re going to love this episode, and we talk everything from cholesterol, right through to Aaron’s favorite keto recipe, described in tantalizing detail at the very end. So go and connect with him over on Twitter, his website, Instagram and YouTube at A.D Keto to check out his Full Day Of Eating Vlogs, product reviews (Like ice-cream) and much much more. https://youtube.com/adketo https://www.instagram.com/a.d.keto/ https://twitter.com/AD_Keto https://adketo.wordpress.com Questions How a 14-year-old, obsessed-with-professional-wrestling Aaron was taken to the doctors doing a flying dropkick into a gigantic pile of pillows and blankets. #1: Ultrarunning On The Ketogenic Diet - Dave Basile (AntiGrivtyGains)
#1: Ultrarunning On The Ketogenic Diet - Dave Basile (AntiGrivtyGains)
My guest today is Dave Basile aka AntiGravityGains is a father, husband and works as a software developer. He grew up in the US but traveled around as his father was in the Air Force. His favorite place to live was Colorado, as well as Peru and Panama. Dave is what most people would call an Ultra Runner, running is the first marathon in 2009, and later his first ultra-marathon in 2015. (An ultra-marathon is basically anything over a marathon in length which is 42 kilometers, 26 miles). Since then, he has run many races and been to many places, including to the famous race out at Leadville Colorado. His longest race to date is the Brew to Brew in Kansas City which was 44 miles in length (a whopping 70 kilometers) in which he ran strict keto. Currently, he lives in Kansas City which gives him easy access to trails, where he’s discovered a love for single track running. He’s also a big advocate of strength training which he used to recover from a bad knee injury in 2012, hitting the gym as part of his regular run training. Dave says connecting with people in the keto diet community on social media has really helped the learning process for him, as well as keeping him accountable and on track. So go and connect with him over on Instagram and YouTube at AntiGravityGains to follow along on his journey of learning and accountability.
