Losing 320lbs with Mike Gorman (@gormy_goes_keto)
In todays podcast, I'm talking with @gormy_goes_keto about his journey through losing 320lbs.
He has many great strategies when it comes to mindset, cravings, macros and external pressure, so this is a MUST listen for anyone struggling with keto.
Mike's Bio:
"I have always struggled with my weight. Sometimes very dramatically. In 2013 I had gotten from my heaviest of 540lbs to an all-time low of 210lbs, but within 6 months I had regained almost 300 pounds. I struggled to find a way to reach my goals weight-wise and help me break free from the cycles of food addiction that dominated my life. In 2017 I decided I needed to try again, and for once I realized the missing piece in all of this was my losing focus on my desire to stay alive, and to fight for that life. I had done research and the keto diet seemed most in line with my needs and also with the good whole foods I loved to eat. I was 470lbs in February of 2017 and just over 2 years later I am 222lbs. The magic of my way of life now isn't the weight loss, but the true sense of control over food and my body that it has given to me. I am no longer a slave to my appetite but feel hopeful that I am building a life that centers on more than my next meal. "

What to Drink with Boozy Ketones (Lisa and Erika)
In todays episode, I'm talking with Lisa and Erika from Boozy Ketones, and we're answering the big questions to do with alcohol and keto.
About Boozy Ketones:
We are Lisa and Erika, two sisters ketofying cocktails for the cause! We started keto a year and a half ago and immediately loved the way it made us feel. We knew fairly quickly that we wanted to stick with it for the long term and that we could find a substitute for almost anything. We make delicious cocktails under 5 carbohydrates per serving so that we don’t feel restricted or even worse, bored. No vodka sodas around here! We’re more fun than that!

Running & Losing 60lbs with Keto - Emily Richman
In today's episode, I'm talking with Emily Richman, who lost 60lbs using a ketogenic diet, and is now able to run half marathons!
Link to her Instagram: instagram.com/thisisketolife
Hi Everyone, I'm Emily. I’m 33 years old living in Austin, TX. I struggled with my weight for almost 15 years. I tried every weight loss method I could find and never thought I'd get off the diet roller coaster. After reaching my heaviest weight of 180lbs in March, 2017, I had almost resigned myself to a life of being overweight. But I decided to make one last attempt and started Keto. Keto made me feel satisfied in a way that no other diet had. The way the diet regulated my insulin and blood sugar made me feel like my days weren't controlled by food for the first time I could remember. My new energy allowed me to incorporate exercise into my life, not as punishment, but as something I truly enjoyed that made me feel great. Since starting Keto, I lost 60 pounds, went from 42% to 21% body fat, and ran my first half marathon! My experience with Keto not only led to physical changes but more dramatically, it changed me mentally and emotionally. Realizing I had the power to change my life and become the person I always wanted to be has given me a confidence I've never had before.

Dan and Erika live in Melbourne Australia with their 2 rescue cats and have been together for 12 years. They have both struggled with losing weight in the past and tried many different options. Keto is what has worked for them, and have lost over 90kg between them. They have now been living a keto life for nearly 3 years and are still amazed with how long they have been able to maintain this new life. They love to travel and wanted to find a way to continue to enjoy traveling whilst living a ketogenic lifestyle. Dan and Erika began their keto travel and food blog in December 2017 to share their keto experiences with others.

In today's episode, I'm talking with Lesya from EatBeFitExplore.
Lesya Holzapfel is a stay-at-home-mom with a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Since switching to a Ketogenic diet, she has lost over 110 lbs after both of her pregnancies. Her passion for health has led her to take the initiative to start a Ketogenic Blog to help other people lose weight and improve their health. She has recently switched to Clean Keto after noticing increased inflammation with eating certain foods and hitting a weight loss stall. #35: Managing PCOS and Infertility with a Keto Diet - Tasha (KetoGasm)
In today's interview, it's my pleasure to talk with Tasha from the popular keto recipe blog KetoGasm.
Tasha Metcalf is a nutrition writer, educator, and food blogger based in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle, Washington. She founded the website Ketogasm.com in 2016, a popular resource for women learning how to implement a ketogenic diet.
Tasha is currently a graduate student in human nutrition and functional medicine and holds a bachelor's degree in biology. Her primary areas of interest focus on women's health and the use of dietary strategies to manage chronic diseases.
Tasha has followed a ketogenic diet intermittently since 2011 to combat infertility, manage PCOS symptoms, and lose weight. She shares her meals and recipes on her site and social media, where she keeps things lighthearted and fun. Tasha also teaches the well-known Hello Keto course, an online workshop that teaches students the fundamentals of the keto diet... and it's totally free!
When Tasha isn't writing or studying, she is probably at the gym trying to get stronger than Arnold, watching B-movie horror films, or going on adventures with her partner and two little ones.

#34: Getting A Second Chance - Renae (@run_renae_run)
In this episode, it is my pleasure to be talking with Renae:
Renae has been very active all her life, being a competitive athlete in Swimming, Surf Lifesaving, triathlons, Volleyball, weight training and body building. Her active lifestyle was the catalyst for her interest in health which lead to her becoming a personal trainer while doing her first university degree to become a Physiologist.
In her career, she developed a passion for preventative health and continued working at a community level and subsequently obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion and a Master in Public Health. Doing this all the whilst, continuing her personal training as a passion and instructing group fitness classes such as Body Pump, RPM, Body Attack, Thump Boxing and boot camps, she then decided to compete in body building figure competitions. However, although looking fantastic and being extremely fit, this ended up having a negative effect on her body, metabolic damage and negative food association.
On 2 January 2013 her life dramatically changed when she contracting Meningitis (only 3 weeks after being made redundant) and ending up being in ICU in hospital and critically ill after her heart actually stopped.
Recovery from meningitis was a very mixed and difficult road, after initially feeling “ok” and wanting to get back to training proved very difficult physically and mentally due to post viral complications she developed. Some days she was unable to even walk 100m, was in pain and bedridden, others she felt fine. Coupled with the fact of still being without work, after 3 months Renae made the hard decision for her health to move back home to her parents to continue to recover, not realising just how sick she had been, was, and was going to continue to be over the coming few years. Wanting to get back to a routine and a career, she decided to go back to University to complete, yet another degree, this time in Accounting and help run the family accounting business.
Over these few years her health was extremely erratic but kept putting things down to “being older” etc. Ultimately she suffered multiple bouts of pneumonia (six in fact), extreme fatigue, dizzy spells including actually passing out, her insomnia was exacerbated by multiple doses of prednisone and other antibiotics, constant fatigue, her post nasal drip got worse, developed photosensitivity, extreme sugar cravings, hormonal imbalances, very high cortisol levels which resulted in adrenal fatigue, stomach upsets, multiple shingles outbreaks, weekly migraines, put on 20kgs and more! Yet, continued to “try” to maintain a healthy life going back to her competition prep diet, her own personal training knowledge by eating the food pyramid and routine training. Nothing was working and she was giving up hope after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, borderline fibromyalgia and was given a prescription for SSRI’s, and at this stage she was just about to hit 100kgs.
Refusing to take the SSRI’s and after binging some podcasts and information from ATP Science where the ketogenic diet was mentioned - a trigger was set and she decided that it’s a last resort and its worth a try because it can’t make her any worse! After doing extensive research reading literally everything by Dr Dom D’Agostino, Mark Sisson, Dr Jason Fung, Keto Connect’s and Thomas Delaurer YouTube channels, she was piecing all her physiology knowledge and ATP Science’s podcast information together for one massive lightbulb moment and started her keto life on 8 February 2018.
Almost 10 months later Renae is migraine free (yes not one single migraine), totally chronic fatigue-free, has no post nasal drip, no more dizzy spells, awesome gut health, adrenal’s repairing, hormones balanced, has completed her first half marathon in over 15 years in a keto state, had NO, yes no, DOMS or muscle soreness or injury, and has lost 20kgs.

DD #19: How the keto diet reduces inflamation
STUDY:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5981249/
A ketogenic diet can:
1 - Decreased reactive oxygen species, (ROS) which are known to contribute to inflammation
2 - Increased adenosine, a natural chemical that is known to fight inflammation and act as a pain reliever
3 - Alleviate IBS (type of inflammation) by a reduction in gluten
4 - Removal of sugar, which releases cytokines, which cause inflammation
5 - If dairy free, can reduce inflammation through removal of lactose intolerance
Neurodegenerative diseases:
Since 2008 it has become clear that a low carbohydrate diet causes an increase of KETONE BODIES serum levels, paralleled by a reduction in several inflammatory parameters, and that KD allows neuroprotection for brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases
A randomized controlled dietary intervention trial was done on 40 overweight subjects aged 18–55 years, fed with a diet very low in carbohydrate or an isocaloric diet low in fat for 12 weeks. Subjects fed with KD developed a mild ketosis and showed weight loss, decreased adiposity, and an improved glycaemic control as well as an improved insulin sensitivity. Both diets significantly decreased the concentration of several serum inflammatory markers, but there was an overall greater anti-inflammatory effect associated with KD
The ketogenic diet showed a reduction in TNF-alpha, interleukin-8 (IL-8), (MCP-1), (PAI-1), (ICAM-1), while these markers showed a little change in the subjects fed with a low fat diet.
This suggests that it is the macronutrient composition, not the weight loss or the caloric reduction the real responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity
Several neurodegenerative diseases are interconnected by shared neurotoxic mechanisms related to inflammatory mechanisms such as cytokine release, neurotrophin synthesis inhibition, release of NO and CO, which are potentially harmful to surrounding tissues
In response, the cells provide endogenous mechanisms tending to neutralize the molecules responsible for inflammatory damage
A winning strategy to attempt to block neuroinflammation may consist in the enhancement of endogenous anti-inflammatory programs. One of the most promising approaches seems to be the ketogenic diet
The ketogenic diet has shown to decrease the production of Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) and therefore the βamyloid peptide
A ketogenic diet can activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) which decreases systemic inflammation
βHB, one of the main substances detected in the blood after following a ketogenic diet, is able to cross the BBB thanks to the specific expression of its transporter MCT1 on endothelial cells. But after its entrance into the brain, β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) not only provides energy but activates the receptor hydroxy-carboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2), which lowers neuroinflammation
The activation of HCA2 by ketogenic diet was shown to induce a neuroprotective phenotype in bone-marrow derived macrophages that infiltrate the brain
βHB mediated the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated human monocytes leading to a reduced production of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) without significantly affecting tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels
Which Foods Cause The Most Inflammation:
Processed foods that are packaged and refined.
High-GI foods
Refined seed oils, corn, safflower, soybean oils
Dairy
Coffee and alcohol
