It’s over

It’s over

The 2023 Red Sox have finally died. It might have taken longer than I thought, but it happened… For the first time we have a guest on the show! My cousin Adam joins Fenway on Fire to discuss going to Mookie’s return game to Fenway, the 2023 season and the direction of the team.

Yankees Suck!

Yankees Suck!

No, they like really do. As much as I enjoyed that sweep over the Yankees, that series was as much about them as it was the Red Sox. For the Sox the story is their young rotation coming together. With Houck suffering that facial fracture, they need to wrap the other four guys in bubble wrap… This week’s Beverage of the Week is Sierra Nevada Summerfest.

I tried to warn you people

Back from sabbatical! A month ago this team was flying! Now, not so much. I take a micro-view of the club and talk about the June 8 game against Cleveland where Matt Dermody started and Corey Kluber was left to die. Then I take a macro view of the club. Hint, it’s not good.

So that's what a quality start looks like

So that's what a quality start looks like

After last week's debacle against the Rays, the Red Sox rode their luck to go 5-2 in games against the Angels and Twins. After not having a starter so much as throw a pitch in the 6th inning, the Red Sox had not one, not two, but three starters complete six innings and allow under three earned runs! That is a quality start kids. Hell, two of them even finished seven innings! I talk about Casas and Yoshida's struggles, and an encouraging start to the season from Jarren Duran.

Around the league I break down the A's imminent move to Las Vegas, Max Scherzer's sticky stuff ejection, and the Diamondback DFAing Madison Bumgarner.

BONUS Episode - World Baseball Classic Final Preview

BONUS Episode - World Baseball Classic Final Preview

The World Baseball Classic has been such a great tournament, and I was so fired up about the final I had to record the first ever Fenway on Fire BONUS Episode! Can Team USA with it's prolific lineup carry whichever middling starting pitcher takes the ball? Will the Yu Darvish from the 2017 World Series show up for Japan, or will he defeat the US like in the 2009 WBC? I also gush just a little about Masataka Yoshida and Roki Sasaki.

Back and full of vigor

Back and full of vigor

With apologies to John Henry, Fenway on Fire is back! This week we briefly get up to speed. I share my love of the World Baseball Classic and disdain for the soft American starting pitchers who don't want to pitch in it. I also catch up on the Red Sox injury situation and the state of the starting rotation; not great! With legal mobile betting in Massachusetts, I share some MLB and WBC picks.

A shorter, more off the cuff show this week as I get back in the swing.

'False Narratives' that are kinda true

'False Narratives' that are kinda true

This week is all about John Henry's recent media tour. Well, Henry did a couple of email Q&As which for him is a media tour. I put his comments to Jen McCaffrey in The Athletic ($) and Sean McAdam in Boston Sports Journal ($) under the microscope. Lots of John Henry voice this week! I also touch on the passing of Tim McCarver... This week's beverage of the day is yesterday's leftover coffee made into iced coffee.

How many injured pitchers does it take to form a rotation?

Happy belated Truck Day! Will the new, balanced schedule help the Red Sox make the playoffs? Here's a hint: no. Jayson Stark ($) with everything you need to know about the new schedule. Do the Red Sox have enough "Character Guys"? I also react to Keith Law ($) and Kiley McDaniel's ($) farm system rankings. Law himself says on his own website these rankings are just an opinion.

Then I take a deep dive into the Red Sox rotation. I break down every candidate for the rotation in order on how much confidence I have in them. Sorry James Paxton, at least The Big Maple is a cool nickname.

Hope is springing for some people

Hope is springing for some people

Maybe hope springing eternal isn't a cliche. I'm sensing some members of the nation are starting to talk themselves into this team. This is mostly normal as opposed to toxic positivity. I share some social media banter from both sides, and some national voices who are far from bullish on this team. Chaim says it's gonna be awesome

Chaim says it's gonna be awesome

Chaim Bloom said at the Rafael Devers press conference where his new extension was announced, "It's going to be awesome". Most of us were left shaking our heads wondering what the "it" is that is going to be awesome and when does the awesomeness start. Steve Phillips on MLB Network doesn't think things are that awesome in Boston. I also discuss the impending signing of Adam Duvall, and signing of Jorge Alfaro. For the first time in years, the Red Sox put their money where their mouth is! Rafael Devers has been locked up to an 11 year extension. I break down the deal, what it means for the 2023 club, the Red Sox standing in Boston, and in the baseball world…I also briefly touched on Jean Segura signing with Miami, and additional details on Nathan Eovaldi’s negotiations with the Red Sox… Red Sox fans chirping John Henry at the Winter Classic: https://bit.ly/3IqxAfy Listen to the ITM Podcast I referenced here: https://spoti.fi/3IoI0vY and Sean MacAdam’s weekly Member Q&A at Boston Sports Journal ($) https://bit.ly/3Qeq21k… Beverage of the Day: Homebrew Wet Hop Ale: https://bit.ly/3vAZHkB

Also discussed is Jen McCaffery’s story in The Athletic about the Red Sox pursuit of Masataka Yoshida ($) bit.ly/3WqKKxc. I also joined former Red Sox RHP Pat Light’s Twitter Spaces on the business of the Red Sox. Listen here: bit.ly/3Gs4JG0. Also a quick review of Sean Murphy’s extension with Atlanta. Who needs a Shortstop? Mets have two!

Who needs a Shortstop? Mets have two!

While we hope that Trevor Story and his sore arm can play short, Uncle Steve jumps off the top rope and steals the Giants’ marquee signing Carlos Correa. That’s two all star shortstops for the Mets, and none for the Red Sox. We will look at why that is, and more critically how the offseason spending spree affects the Red Sox in the short and long term.
