Muni-Muni Stories

Set two years before the 1986 EDSA Revolution, Liway (2018) depicts the lives of political prisoners in Camp Delgado. It follows the struggles of Kumander Liway, Kumander Toto, and Dakip before and during their capture. Through the film, songs, speeches, and mythical stories punctuate the twists and turns of their road to freedom. Glaiza de Castro in the title role and performs the songs in the film. Pagbabalik and Awit ng Pag-ibig, both originally by Asin, are the focus of this episode. These songs embody the spirit of Liway, the film and the woman who inspired it.

The film Tulad ng Dati is one of the true gems that Cinemalaya released in 2006. It blends fiction and biography to dramatize the life of the OPM band The Dawn. Getting a new hit is every musician’s dream, and the movie charts the band’s struggles and triumphs, making that dream come true repeatedly across decades. The film is also a tribute to a band member, the rock icon and guitarist Teddy Diaz, who passed away in 1988. In this episode, director Mike Sandejas and The Dawn’s current guitarist Francis Reyes—DJ, podcast host, and music journalist extraordinaire—reflect on the film’s titular song, finding new meaning in the interval between then and now.

Eight years after their break-up, two college sweethearts in Alone/Together (2019) reunite. Christine and Raf, an arts student and a would-be medical doctor respectively, now lead different lives. Their reunion takes them back to their youthful dreams. It also reawakens the unresolved feelings they have for each other. Reflecting on scenes shot in public hospitals, universities, and art museums, this episode plunges into the song “Kapit,” written and performed by Armi Millare. The director Antoinette Jadaone joins Millare in conversation, reminding us about the importance of holding on to our uniquely personal truth in the face of change and uncertainty.

The historical film Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (2017) revisits Samar in 1901. Through the eyes of a boy named Kulas, the director Khavn portrays a child’s flight from his hometown with his grandfather and a toddler whom they rescue. Two versions of Katurog Na (Tulog Na/Sleep Now) are the focus of conversation: an instrumental version and another performed by Khavn and Lolita Carbon. Motifs from this song run through the film. The episode builds the case that the movie should be seen by children. It also digs deep into the significance of naming, evident in the characters’ names, as well as the references to mythology and the rituals related to anting-anting.

In Ang Nawawala (2012), Gibson and Enid find expression through old vinyl records and the music scene. Jazz Nicolas of the Itchyworms and Ciudad’s Mikey Amistoso, Cinemalaya 2012 awardees for Film Scoring, discuss their favorites in the soundtrack. They draw insights formed with the director Marie Jamora, on soundtracking as storytelling. Flowing through the music of Ang Nawawala is the process of healing and reconciliation the family depicted is experiencing. Longtime creative partners, Nicolas and Amistoso reflect on their artistic process and current music scoring projects. Their soundtrack for Ang Nawawala also recalls the story of musicians in a bygone era. They reminisce on closed music spots like Route 916 and B-side, all captured in the film.

Spun from the 1990s collaboration between Gary Valenciano and Jungee Marcelo, the song lends its title to the 1995 movie written and directed by award-winning writer and director Jose Javier Reyes. The movie celebrates dance as the expression of youth, and stars Valenciano, Jao Mapa, Dayanara Torres, Jolina Magdangal, Roselle Nava, the late Nida Blanca, and Tia Pusit. Celebrating melodies, beats, creation, and performance, the song makers and the director in this pilot episode share their thoughts on the intersections of cinema, dance, and music.

What are the roots of Philippine folk rock? OPM icon Heber Bartolome unearths them in classical and bandurria music as well as in the 1960s-70s rock scene. This recollection touches on the challenges of turning love of country into music. An illustrative case is this episode’s centerpiece Tayo’y Mga Pinoy, a song that wards off Philippine self-images in colonial mirrors. Bartolome also dwells on Alumusal, Nena, and other tunes portraying the lives of ordinary folk or (as Filipinos say) of Juan de la Cruz.

Muling Kagat, the topic of this episode, is a one-of-a-kind tribute album to the 1970s band Hotdog. The album produced by Paolo Garcia includes a new version of the band’s hit song "Manila" along with unreleased song covers.
