44. Soil Health Is Vital For Human Health | Andrew Neal - Soil Microbiologist
Andrew Neal is a Soil Microbiologist researching how farmers can optimise the health of their soil.
His research places organic carbon at the heart of soil: “Despite carbon’s critical role, the mechanisms underlying carbon dynamics and the link to soil water and nutrient availability are poorly understood,” says Neal. “Society still struggles with the concept of what soil is and how it can be managed effectively because it is such a complex combination of biological, chemical and physical processes”.
Combining modern techniques such as shotgun metagenomics and X-ray computed tomography, and borrowing heavily from the extended phenotype concept developed by Dawkins, the emerging processual view of biology and critical systems theory, he is working with colleagues to develop a radically different way of thinking about soil.
Neal is a regular public speaker and his work has been featured on BBC Radio 4’s Inside Science, at New Scientist Live events and podcasts (Agrii Tramlines Podcast, Croptec Podcast) as well as speaking at the Parliamentary ERFA committee and featuring in BBSRC's video feature - What happens when you switch farmland from livestock to crops?
He maintains an international portfolio of research, collaborating with colleagues in Australia, Brazil, China, India and Uruguay.

12. How to thrive in the 21st century - Dr. Russell Jaffe
I catch up with Preventative Medicine Pioneer - Dr. Russell Jaffe or Dr. J as he's more affectionately known.
We cover a range of topics such as:
- Thriving in the 21st century
- Green Light Meditation - https://youtu.be/lw3d5zXMSRs
- What we've missed about Inflammation - https://youtu.be/pAMnrP-BXKk
- How to asses our own health right now
For half a century, Dr. Jaffe has been investigating, researching, and communicating. As a physician and scientist, he aspired to be comprehensive, objective, empiric, and experiential. Dr. Jaffe started his career that included a passion for deeper understanding, wisdom, evidence, and insight into mechanisms of good and ill health. Starting from intense curiosity and learned scepticism, Dr. Jaffe sought to debunk the best-known advocates of a variety of traditional health promotion and healing systems. What started as a journey to disprove holistic forms of care became a rich educational experience that transformed Dr. Jaffe into a student and then researcher in such areas as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture, active meditation, systems biology, and manipulative arts.
Dr. Jaffe came to stunning realizations. The Western model of healthcare he studied, trained in, and researched was fundamentally flawed. He learned that symptom suppression is not the same as personalized health promotion; sick care is not the same as healthful caring; abstract information is not the same as relevant wisdom. He rediscovered that treating disease is not the same as helping whole people heal.
