#28 - National-level Athlete, Mom, Teacher, Amputee & A Marvel Comics Commercial - An Interview with Thea Hill

Back to a more traditional interview episode.  My guest is Thea Hill - another inspiring figure in my life.  She is a national-level athlete (in a really cool sport) , an avid runner, teacher, mom to 3 boys, and - an amputee.  She was born with a condition whereby the top of her left leg was not there at all. We talk about the challenges growing up as an amputee, and how she is succeeding in her life today having overcome those challenges. Oh, and she was featured in a Marvel Comics commercial.  How cool is that!? It was such a pleasure interviewing Thea Hill - I hope you enjoy it!  If you found this episode helpful, or know someone it would be helpful to, please share and spread the love! #27 - Special Series - On The Ground Around The World - HOUSTON, TX - Maria Apreza

SPECIAL SERIES: On The Ground Around The World We will be talking to my friends, family and colleagues around the world, and we'll get their take on what they're experiencing during the COVID-19 lockdown.  The goal is to share and open our eyes to what's going on in different parts of the world, but to of course maintain a sense of levity through it all.

This week, we talk to my friend Maria Apreza.  We met in the Philippines in 2013 as we were both a part of a volunteer mission for disaster relief post Typhoon Haiyan in some of the hardest-hit areas of the country.  We talk about what it's like to be in Houston, Texas during the COVID-19 Pandemic, how impactful the shutdown has been to the economy, particularly around the rodeo where Maria worked for for several years, and how she's adapted to life in self-quarantine.

Take care and talk soon.

#22 - Having Big Mentors & Genuinely Helping People As The Root of Success - An Interview With Dr. Jenny Ma

What happens when you have a Nobel Peace Prize winning aunt? Inevitably, one would be inspired. Dr. Jenny Ma grew up with strong female examples, and has become one herself for her 2 young children. She is a dually-licensed doctor, practicing both as a Chiropractor and a Naturopathic Doctor. She is able to assist patients from a holistic perspective, and along with her colleagues at The Living Wellness Centre, has been nominated as the best Naturopathic Clinic by a local newspaper 3 years in a row. We talk about mentors, how she and her husband Clay love learning and their pursuit of higher learning to achieve what they have to date. We also talk about the role of fitness in her and her family’s life, and how she discovered her love for running and maintaining an active lifestyle.

#21 - What is Mindfulness? Moving Well & Music in Fitness. Good or Bad? - An Interview With Jessica Bowman

How much do you love listening to music when you work out? I certainly do - I’ve got playlists for every mood and type of workout I plan on doing on a given day. But one variable I have never really considered, is the volume that I choose to listen to the music. Especially when you wear headphones, all the audio output is going straight into your ear canal, and depending on the volume, it may only be a handful of minutes until you are already putting your hearing at risk for permanent damage. MINUTES! It’s incredible how easily we can lose track of this and over time, you’ve turned it up little by little to a potentially damaging volume level. Jess and I discuss this, her permanent hearing loss, how she mitigates damaging her hearing further and simple steps we can take to prevent it from happening to us as well.
Thank you Jess for being so passionate about this and I hope we can create more awareness around the issue!

#18 - Selflessness, Generosity & How Fitness Saved Her From A Life-Threatening Illness - An Interview with Sharon Freeman

This is my interview with group fitness instructor Sharon Freeman! She is a well-known and extremely experienced member of the fitness community, but I would say is better known for her kindness and generosity to everyone around her.
Sharon started working in the fitness industry after a life-threatening health scare changed her path in the medical field, where she was stressed and unable to look after her own health. She attributes her own participation in group fitness classes to her complete recovery from her illness, known as Takayasu Arteritis. Although she is in “indefinite remission”, Sharon believes this is as a result of her active lifestyle which she maintains, and has shared her love of fitness to countless others through instructing group fitness classes.
She has overcome physical challenges, but is now battling a professional challenge. In her selfless nature, this battle is not just for herself, but for potentially hundreds of others.
She has certainly inspired me to continue to stand up for what’s right, a value I am grateful to have.
I hope you enjoy this one FIT UNITED FAM!
If you found this helpful, all I ask is to share it! If you share this with just ONE person, you might change their lives forever.
Thank you for allowing me to serve you!

#15 - MONDAY DRIVE - 4 Methods Superstars Use to Protect Their Energy (Robin Sharma Mastery Session)

Robin Sharma is my favourite author - I’ve read and own every one of his books, with exception to maybe one.  A couple of his books in particular, firstly The Saint, The Surfer & The CEO, and The Greatness Guides 1 & 2, were so influential for me because I came across these books in a time where I was in between careers paths in my early 20’s and I didn’t know which direction to go next.

For this week’s Monday Drive, I share one of Robin Sharma’s Mastery Sessions.  In these Mastery Sessions, he distills the best ways to conquer our life’s challenges, and how to be more mindful and deliberate in our actions.  In this Mastery Session, he talks about the 4 Methods Superstars Use To Protect Their Energy.  I found this relevant with me recently - just like the time in our day, we have to budget those minutes appropriately.  In a similar way, we need to budget our energy expenditure as well, or we risk burning out.  Not only that, we need to be mindful of the energy we allow around us, and be mindful not to allow negative, draining energy in.

I hope you enjoy Robin Sharma’s ideas on how we can all protect our energy.

#14 - Not Having FOMO, Overcoming Anxiety & Alcohol Use Disorder, Losing 30lbs in 7 months & Infectious Energy - An Interview with Alyssa Anderson

Talking openly about our past can be difficult.  Often times, it can even be painful.  But today’s guest has no qualms about her past, and talks openly about the challenges she has experienced and how they have shaped her to be the fun loving, energetic and bubbly person that she is today. My guest Alyssa Anderson is a social media influencer and is also the co-host of the Approachable Podcast.  We talk about how she travelled the country as she grew her role in the restaurant industry at one of my favourite restaurants, Cactus Club Cafe! She also shares how her dad’s passing was a turning point in her life, but in a very positive way; and how her friendships and relationships are so vitally important, especially her relationship with her best friend Samantha, who is also an accomplished Youtuber, social media influencer and the other co-host of the Approachable Podcast.

#13 - MONDAY DRIVE - The Power of Vulnerability, Mental Fortitude & Digging Deep To Truly Understand Yourself - An Interview with Jaskamal Gill

For this week’s Monday Drive, I wanted to share my interview with my friend Jaskamal Gill. Her and I always manage to have incredibly thoughtful, deep conversations and I’m so glad I am able to share it with you today!
We talk about her finishing school a year ahead of everyone else her age, and how that impacted her socially. We also talk about going to university in Montreal at McGill, and how her experience there taught her the “tough stuff” and really helped her mature and grow into the independent woman she is now. She talks about the difficult decisions and conversations she had to have when she decided to pursue her aspirations to attend medical school, and how transitioning to living in Australia has been incredibly rewarding, challenging, and necessary, all at the same time for her to truly realize her fullest potential. All this and so much more on today's episode!
If you found this conversation helpful, or know someone who you think would benefit from hearing it, please share the episode! There is nothing better than sharing the wealth of wisdom we learn from others. I appreciate you. Thank you.

#12 - Authenticity & Passion is Attractive, Acknowledging Your Talents & Developing Them, & Wanderlust - An Interview with Mike Elias

#12 - Authenticity & Passion is Attractive, Acknowledging Your Talents & Developing Them, & Wanderlust - An Interview with Mike Elias

When you are authentic to who you are, you attract energy, opportunities, and people who are aligned with who YOU truly are.  This was made even more evident during my conversation with graffiti and tattoo artist, Mike Elias.  He shares how mentors at an early age helped point him in the right direction to eventually uncover his artistic talents.  After spending some time working in the construction industry, Mike discovered that although it could be lucrative, he realised he was meant to do something more with his artistic abilities.

Becoming a tattoo artist stemmed from his talents in the art of graffiti, and is now a highly sought after artist in Vancouver.  Mike’s humility and his perspective on his place amongst his peers in the tattoo industry was remarkable to hear, given the amazing work he has done on myself but on hundreds of others.

Proficient in his craft, Mike has now also found a passion for travel after experiencing backpacking through Colombia.

This was a refreshing conversation that gave me insight into the world of graffiti and tattooing, what it takes to become masterful, and that great friends and mentors really can be the catalysts behind incredible personal growth and achievement.

Hope you enjoy this one FIT UNITED FAM!

#10 - New Years Resolutions: Yea or Nea? I turn it to YOU guys to answer this question!

I ask a very important question around a topic that comes up first thing every year, and that is, "What are your New Year's Resolutions?"

I thought it would be interesting to see what you guys have to say about it and whether you believe in making resolutions or not.  It's so interesting to hear the different perspectives on why some of you don't believe in resolutions, and the reasons behind that.  On the flip side, why some of you believe in resolutions and what they mean for you.

We get into that, what some of my goals are and more, on this first episode of 2020!

#9 - MONDAY DRIVE: My Reflections on 2019, the Past Decade, a Career-Ending Injury, and Coincidences. Oh, and FU too.

This is the final episode of 2019! For this final Monday Drive, I wanted to talk directly to you guys and share a bit of who I am! This is a conversation after all and I think it's important you get to know me and how I got here!
I reflect back on the past year and parts of the past decade, and the things that stood out to me and learned over the years. A lot of things have transpired, and so many changes, both negative and positive (they all turn out to be positive changes, ultimately, right?!) ;) I talk about that, and what FU really means, and SHOULD mean. What's the first thing you think about when you see "FU"? Let's change that into something more meaningful. I get into that and more, as we lead into the next year and decade. Happy New Year FIT UNITED FAM! See you next year! :)
