International Women's Day is around the corner. A day that is celebrated in Russia and Eastern Europe with a lot of flowers. We talk about the huge flowerday with Naila and Moses from MM Flor. MM Flor is specialised in selling flowers and plants to Russia and Eastern Europe.

Seafreight as an alternative for airfreight for Kenia is more relevant than ever. At the moment it's not only from a sustainability point of view, also because of the lack of space with airfreight. Last Tuesday there was a webinar about this theme. Jeroen was one of the speakers, and will tell us about the challenges growers from Kenia are facing to make sea freight work.

Flower Circus Talks #101 Tom Vermeer - Xpol BV
In this Flower Circus Talks we have Tom Vermeer, managing director of Xpol as our Guest.
For all parties in the flower industry, it are challenging times. How does Xpol handle this?
What started as a unique approach on how they synchronize the market, instead of buying and selling, turned out to be a great formula, that also helps them in times where all costs rise, especially airfreight.
By synchronizing between grower and customer the chain is made much shorter. Packed at source is a great example: by packing the flowers/bouquets at source it saves a lot of time (vase life!) it also reduces the amount of handling and waste.
Together with other partners they also worked on a new packaging to make optimal use of the airfreight space (which is a scarce thing right now). Pallets are loaded to the maximum, not losing valuable space. Next to that it also contributes to the sustainability goals Xpol set for themselves. The amount of paper/cardboard is significantly reduced since the use of this standardized box.
This and much more in this very interesting Flower Circus Talks
Flower Circus Talks #100!!! with Marcel Zandvliet - CMO Dutch Flower Group
For this special episode: #100 we have the CMO Marcel Zandvliet from the Dutch Flower Group. With Marcel, we talk about marketing in the floral industry. Why is marketing so important? Flower prices are already high, why should we promote.
Dutch Flower Group does a lot of research in consumer behavior, and they see a real change in behavior in how consumers look at flowers and plants. A trend that can work out really well for our industry. To benefit it's important to promote to the right audience.
There is also an important role for the Flower Council of Holland in the general promotion. With the generic promotion, flowers can be on top of mind with consumers. It would be great to achieve that consumers have/make a budget to buy flowers and plants on a regular basis.
At In the end, there is a special surprise for John for the 100th episode, a true milestone, and up to the next 100!
Flower Circus Talks #99 Sahid Nahim - New Bloom Solutions
'A whole new generation of florists is created due to Covid'
With Sahid we Talk about how the industry is changing, and how florists are reacting to it.
Sahid has been at the SAF and saw that a lot of florists attended the seminars about online sales/marketing etc. The rooms were filled with florists. Most of them see it as a new/extra way of sales.
After the crisis of 2008 a new group of florists emerged, and the same is happening again. For the industry, it's a good thing we get new people in with new and fresh ideas.
We also talked about how the industry should work more together to get better results. Collaboration is the key to success!
Flower Circus Talks #98 Rudi Tuinman The Flower Bazar Aalsmeer
After a period of 16 months without any flower exhibitions in Holland, The FlowerBazar is happening. Rudi Tuinman and Pascal Koeleman from 2dezign tell us about their first event in Holland, and we have a quick look around as well!
Flower Circus Talks #97 Special: where did all the roses go? with Michael Black & Alejandro Henao
There is a huge shortage of roses at the moment. What is going on? We talk with Michael Black from Jet Fresh Flowers and Jet Fresh Growers, and Alejandro Henao from Naranjo Roses to find out.
There isn't just one reason why the market is so stressed at the moment, it's a combination of different factors. Lots of farms have been bought by the big supermarkets (suppliers). These roses normally were sold in the traditional markets.
This makes that the supply is significantly less. Add with this that it's a low production period for a lot of growers, record low temperatures in Ecuador. And on top of that maintenance work on the runway of the main airport, so less flight capacity.
Luckily the last one should be taken care of this weekend. The weather will not stay cold for long (hopefully) and growers (which pinch their crops to make peaks), will have higher production coming up for the All Saints.
The first point makes that the market is way more sensitive to higher demand. Both Michael and Alejandro recommend planning well ahead of when you have an event. Placing standing orders will help a lot as well to get the flowers you want.
There are growers who want to expand to fulfill the demand. However, the costs and delivery time of materials to build greenhouses are crazy. This is why both men think this market will at least for another year.
Flower Circus Taks #96 - Peter Zaat Deliflor Chrysanten
Deliflor Chrysanten is the largest chrysanthemum breeder worldwide. The Deliflor assortment consists of more than 300 different cultivars which are grown all over the world. Flower Circus Talks #95 Bas Kamp - Petal Peddlers (FleuraMetz Australia)
"The future for the floral industry in Australia looks bright"
In this episode of Flower Circus Talks, we have Bas Kamp as our guest. After traveling all over the world as a florist Bas ended up starting a wholesale business in Brisbane Australia. Running the business already over 25 years now, Bas is the man to ask about the Australian flower business, and how it differs from other markets.
Although the industry in Australia faces some challenges; from lack of flights to get imports into the country, to expanding cities, so growers have to move or stop. Bas sees that the future for the floral industry looks bright. Young people starting as florists, and as prices are good for locally produced flowers, hopefully, people start to grow (more) flowers.

Flower Circus Talks #94 Nicu Bocancea - Floraria Iris
Nicu is driven by his passion for floral design, he completed his story by perfecting his art with the most prestigious florists in the world.
During the 50th anniversary of his family being in the floral business, they came up with a project of showing 50 days in a row a special design in Bucharest: it started with an arrangement in a whole in the road, and quickly more places in the city were decorated. The dress they made with Covallaria even made it into the Guinness book of records!
His efforts are attested by achieving first place at numerous floristic competitions. He will also compete in the Europa cup for floristry in 2022. Competition is something that keeps Nicu young and gives him the pressure that he needs to come up with new ideas.
In short a very interesting story from a great designer!

Flower Circus Talks #92 with Alison Bradley - Fusion Flowers
After making 121 magazines in 20 years Fusion Flower stops.
All these years the magazine was a podium for young floral designers and an inspiration source for florists and designers all over the planet.
We are talking with Alison Bradley the editor of Fusion Flowers; about the adventures she had over the years. Highlights with meeting designers, winning awards, and much more.
By the reactions of all people during the Talks you see how much the magazine (and Alison) meant for everybody. It's a pity the magazine has to stop, but one thing is for sure: Alison will be around, and we are really delighted about that!
Flower Circus Talks #91 Joey Azout - Alexandra Farms
Now that weddings start again, it is time to talk with Joey Azout from Alexandra Farms. The boutique farm is growing fantastic garden roses.
This year they added 9 new varieties, some of them are sprayroses.
Joey will talk us through all the new varieties, and what makes them so special. One thing is for sure, there is a great story behind every variety!
What a lot of florists still have in mind is that garden roses have a poor vase life, all varieties Alexandra Farms is growing are tested, to make sure the vase life is good. The vase life is even mentioned on their website and posters, as well as the fragrance.
What becomes clear is that Alexandra Farms does way further than growing great roses. Just check how they pack their boxes, it's like receiving a gift. Helping florists making the right choices in terms of varieties is also part of it. the right photography plays a big role there as well. How do roses look like in the different stages?
The next idea is to come up with a course for florists especially for garden roses. In this way (new) florists can learn more about sprayroses, varieties, care and design.
In short a Talks filled with a lot of inspiration from Joey!
Flower Circus Talks #90 Keith Lin
In this Flower Circus Talks, we have the very talented Keith Lin.
It doesn't matter if it is a flower, plant or tree. You can make sure he can something extraordinarily out of it. Multiply price winning at several big shows around the world like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Singapore Garden Festival, and designer at the Petal Garden at the Jewel Changi Airport.
Great to learn how Keith tries to stimulate all the senses in his designs. Next to that, he is checking all his designs if they are suitable for Social media and selfies. After all this is how most people will see the designs through social media
In short a must-watch, because this man can do magic, and has a wonderful story to tell!!!

Flower Circus Talks #88 Lani Callister Ensign Wholesale Floral
Lani Callister of Ensign Wholesale Floral is telling us how they experienced the pandemic. One thing is for sure, the love for flowers got them through. Feeling the need to help the whole industry: from growers to their customers.
This to make sure that at least there were some flowers for the people who needed them so badly.
They kept their standing orders running, although most of the time it resulted in giving flowers away for free because there were almost no sales. Trying to help everyone where they could, resulted that when the demand increased, they could scale up with their suppliers quite quickly.
After the pandemic the sales are much higher than before, resulting in already new challenges. Labour and transport are now the main topics.
It has been a real tough period, but it also gave a lot of goods. People are willing to celebrate life more, and flowers play a big role in that now! This and much more in this Flower Circus Talks.

Flower Circus Talks #86 Arjan Poland - Lilies and More
"There is a big disbalance in demand and supply in the bulb market at the moment"
In this Flower Circus Talks, we have bulb specialist Arjan Poland from Lilies and More.
The prices of flowers are still quite high because of the big demand worldwide. This is what we see now, but also in the bulb market prices are much higher than last year. Will we see the consequences of that next year?
Arjan will explain to us why prices are higher. There is not just one reason, there are several reasons why there is not enough supply for the recent demand.
Arjan also tells more about Lilies and More, the company he runs with Piet Koopman. They started with lilies, but as the name already says, they do much more. From other crops, to also helping growers in all possible ways to make sure they run a profitable business.
Recent examples are helping growers with a half-automatic planting machine for lilies. As well as a portable steaming machine, to make sure the soil is clean for a perfect crop.

FC Talks #80 Martine van Velden
"Designing bouquets for the mass market is much more than putting nice flowers together"
What was supposed to be a 3 month job in America, became a working there already there now for many years.
Martine is now designing for the mass market and tells about her job, what she likes about it.
Designing for mass markets requires more than making good looking bouquets. Because of the enormous amounts that are sold, it is about availability, logistics etc.
We also discuss how Covid changed her way of working, and how the pandemic influenced the way people experience flowers.
With the amount of flowers that are bought at the moment, not only for special occasions, but also as presents, thank you, and own use it is no wonder growers are getting sold out. The US wasn't a country which use to buy flowers for own use. With this changing the demand went up quickly.

Shabistan was during her study already attracted to flowers, spending half her money on buying flowers.

Next to this she also writes her own blog (flowerandeverything.com) about her big passion flowers, and everything else that keeps her busy.

Shabistan have learned it all buy spending hours reading about the subject, and also by asking professionals in this area for help. Her tip: don't be afraid to ask, those people are most of the time more than happy to share their knowledge.
The magical word for social media seems to be targeting. Find your right audience, and start to communicate with them. It is better to start out with a small group, than with a big audience. Test how they react on your posts, and finetune it if necessary. From there you can try to make some bigger steps.
Make sure you are visibel as well, so no once in a week posts, as people will not see it.
This and much more great tips and information from Shabistan in this Flower Circus Talks.

FC Talks #73 Brexit Special
We are 4 weeks in with the Brexit now. How did it influence the floral trade in the UK.
We talk about this with Caroline Marshal-Foster, Director of the Good Florist Guide and editor at the Florist Trade Magazine. John Davidson, the finance director at Tom Brown Wholesale Florist and Kosta Foufas from FMA Ltd.
After waiting and preparing for it for about 4,5 years the Brexit was a fact on the first of January 2021. Although of course some things changed, we see that Covid has a way bigger effect on the floral industry than that Brexit has so far.
Flowers are not a problem for now to get them into the UK from Europe, plants is a bit of a different story, but certainly not impossible. Most exporters/importers are shipping at least twice a week. Sundries are delayed because of a lack of containers on the right places. But also this is more a Covid issue than it has anything to do with Brexit
Sales for most companies has been good, and the expectations for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are very high!
