075 - ALE MAX DAY

075 - ALE MAX DAY

When Nike's annual Air Max day (March 26th) arrives each year to commemorate the iconic Air Max sneaker line and its impact on sneaker culture, Nike often releases special edition Air Max sneakers.

But Craig Stroud, lover of craft beer and fresh sneakers, wanted to take it a step further by fusing his 2 passions together in a mashup that makes so much sense when you say it out loud! And simply put, ALE MAX DAY was born- the "celebration of ale and air!"

And who better to partner with than one of the biggest influencers in the craft beer industry- ATL's own Ale Sharpton, known for his fresh style and love and knowledge of the craft beer industry!

In celebration of the 2nd annual ALE MAX day, Mitch and Rich were blessed with the opportunity to sit down with creator Craig Stroud, Ale Sharpton, and marketing director Christina Albetta to discuss the how and the why behind the day that everyone looks forward to. It's an event that goes beyond the celebration of ale and air by ensuring the needs of those struggling in our communities are met.

PAWKids:

Demonstrating its commitment to social responsibility, ALE MAX will be donating a portion of beer sales to PAWKids – an incredible, Atlanta-based nonprofit and community hub that exists to support and provide holistic resources to children and families in need.

Gateway Center:

We welcome everyone to donate gently used sneakers during Ale Max Day at @mondaynightgarage, on March 22, from 7 to 11 pm.! The amazing, ATL-based nonprofit @gatewayctr will be collecting donations for both men and women experiencing homelessness. A free draft beer will be rewarded to donors courtesy of ALE MAX and Monday Night!

This year's release is definitely amped up, as the release of the ALE MAX 1 IPA is being brewed at both Monday Night Brewing (ATL) and Bearded Iris (Nashville)! So whether you're in ATL or Nashville, make sure to stop by and pick up a fresh draft of the ALE MAX 1, and grab a 4 pack before you go!

Mitch, Rich, Ale, and Craig look forward to seeing you at either of the below locations as ALE MAX DAY kicks in to action tonight!

  • 3/22/24: Monday Night Garage (Atlanta, GA), 7-11pm EST
  • 3/23/24: Bearded Iris Sylvan Supply (Nashville, TN), 4-8pm CST

This special live show brings together a diverse lineup of guests, each with their unique perspective on the world of craft beer, and anything that accompanies a glass!

Show Lineup:

  1. Rachel Krebs-Trisilla and her husband, owners of Dark Shadow Brewing, share insights into their brewing journey and the inspiration behind their innovative beer creations.
  2. Nathan Benevelli, representing the Nashville Craft Beer Social Club, serves the community through beer by fostering a vibrant and inclusive beer culture, organizing events, tastings, and educational sessions that bring beer enthusiasts together, while also supporting local breweries
  3. Adding a touch of sophistication to the conversation is CL Treece from Whisky and Sticks cigar lounge in Murfreesboro, TN, who shares his expertise on pairing cigars with craft beer, elevating the tasting experience to new heights.
  4. Last and certainly never least, Shane Gibbs from House of Dogs Brewing keeps the discussion going, offering a behind-the-scenes look into the art of brewing and the passion driving the craft beer industry forward.

Throughout the live show, Mitch and Rich guide the conversation from beer brewing techniques, pairing beers with cigars, and to the cultural significance of craft beer in the local community. And while Mitch and Rich were able to keep their thoughts together and their wits about them, it became increasingly difficult as they enjoyed vintage stouts from the amazing brewers at Bearded Iris.

Special thanks to Bearded Iris Brewing, and all of the staff at the Sylvan Supply location, for making this possible and for their support before, during, and after the show! The Foamy Heads Live show at Bearded Iris Brewing promises an evening for craft beer enthusiasts and podcast fans alike. Tune in and raise a glass to the wonderful world of craft beer!

071 - Whisky & Sticks!

What is one of the best pairings with a good dark beer? How about a great cigar! Mitch and Rich take a small detour from the usual brewery visits and, instead, focus on the love of the cigar craft. The guys sit down with owner and entrepreneur CL of Whisky & Stsicks, Murfreesboro’s newest luxury cigar lounge. Being able to pair a great beer with a great cigar creates an unparalleled relaxing experience, as cigars truly accompany the craft beer mindset. The guys are humbled by CL, as he walks us through his experience in the cigar industry, as well as its comparisons and contrasts to the beer industry.

We drink:

  • Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout 2020. The cigars goes great with this beer! its intense aroamas of charred oak, vanilla, caramel, and smoke compliment the medium bodied cigars.
  • Starlight Distillery Single Barrel Bourbon Barrel Whiskey finished in apple brandy barrels, with barrels selected by Ghostown Barrel Ventures. The apple brandy is the star of the show! That flavor punches through right from the start, and it stays with you all the way to the finish. Talk about a warm hug! This whiskey perfectly compliments the cigar.

We Smoke:

  • Rich: Blanco 2nd third from the Cigar Obsession line. This cigar is mild to medium bodied with a very smooth taste. This cigar is consistent in its entirety! The flavor stays with you from start to finish. It balances out the strong flavors of the BCBS
  • Mitch: Luj Anniversary #4 box press: peppery notes on this box press cigar are not powerful enough to overwhelm the flavors of the stout- rather they compliment the brew nicely. Light coffee notes begin to show up as Mitch continues burning in to the 2nd third of the cigar.

070 - PART 2 - 2023 Craft Brewers Conference Mitch, Rich, Shane, Gary Lorio, Amaury Kervyn D'oud Mooreghem,Pierre Mottet, and Marco Passarella

  • In this 2 part show, Mitch, Rich, and Shane hit the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference. After landing at the Pharmacy Burger Parlor and Beer Garden, the Foamy Heads were joined by Shane Gibbs from House of Dogs Brewing Company and manager of the Casual Pint in Smyrna, TN, Gary Lorio (Regional Account Manager for D&V International), and some heavy hitters in the Belgian beer industry to discuss the love of craft beer and tradition. During the first part, Gary introduced Amaury Kervyn D'oud Mooreghem of Brouwerij Verhaeghe. Originally known for their Duchesse de Bourgogne Flanders Red Ale, Amaury takes the guys thru the history of the brewery as well as the aging and tasting process. He then transitions towards the creation process of the (now) famous Duchesse Cherry, which involves an 18 month maturation in oak casks and an additional 6 month maceration process with real Belgian cherries. The Duchesse Chocolate Cherry Flanders Red Ales is a solid honorable mention as well. Pierre Mottet, representing Val-Dieu, joined the discussion next. He spoke about the uniqueness of their brewery, which is the only Abbey beer still brewing inside the monastery. They're known for their gold medal-winning Triple and Grand Cru, and their beer is linked to the city of Liège in Belgium. The Grand Cru was one of Rich's favorite- you can really taste the passion and attention to detail in these beers! Conversation also revolved around the Val-Dieu Blanche de Liège, a light and citrusy beer perfect for the warm weather. The hosts praised its smoothness and flavor profile, and Pierre revealed that they are also brewing a new version of the Blanche de Liège called Rosé, flavored with strawberries.
  • After the break, Gary introduces Marco Passarella, sales manager from St. Bernardus/Brouwerij. Mitch gets extremely excited here, as St. Bernardus is the brewery that got him in to the craft beer scene. Marco's deep knowledge of the brewery's history, dedication, and even flavor profiles of the beers are next level. We drank the Watou Belgian wit, and finished off with the 75th Anniversary, a super rare beer with only 11,000 bottles made worldwide. Like every one of the bottles, this one was marked with its own unique number!

068 - BS Brew Works with Bob and Shane

Tucked away in the heart of Springfield, Tennessee's historic Main Street, BS Brew Works has become a beloved gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. As Robertson County's sole brewery and taproom, co-founders Bob and Shane - the 'B' and 'S' - along with Shane's wife Karen, have crafted not just an exceptional beer selection, but also a welcoming community hub. In a world where noise and distraction often reign supreme, BS Brew Works offers a respite from the chaos, inviting patrons to sit, chat, and perhaps even forge new friendships over a pint or two. Whether you're in search of your perfect brew or some delicious pub-style fare, come pay them a visit and experience the unique ambiance that sets BS Brew Works apart.

Beers we discussed:

  • Bobcat Blonde American Blonde Ale: easy drinking 4.6% blonde ale that packs a ton of flavor and goes down easy. Bob and Shane definitely started us off on the right food with this one
  • Point Nine Pilsner: Slightly higher in ABV, this pilsner brings along all the flavor you expect in a good refreshing pilsner. Rich wasn't always in to pilsners (as he discusses), but Mitch slowly introduces him to the style, and now he tries to get them whenever he can. Needless to say, he was excited to see a good clean pilsner on tap!
  • Sunny Vanilla Cream Ale: Orlinda, the city in Robertson County, TN is known as the "sunniest spot in TN." This beer was brewed with respect to that city, providing a refreshing taste with just a slight vanilla touch on the back end- reminding us of warm sunny days. and coming in at a light 4.8%, you can drink these all day!
  • Barren Plains Amber: As the boys start to move towards the darker color scale of the flight, Bob and Shane introduce the Barren Plains Amber, a  5.2%  amber lager that is full bodied and smooth, all while packing in a ton of flavor throughout.
  • Midsummers Night Brown Ale: Tastes light, and pours dark... Malty with chocolate, coffe, and graham cracker. This 5.3% brown ale is not too sweet- it's perfect for that midsummer night!
  • Shady West Coast IPA: Rich's favorite of the flight! this solid India Pale Ale harkens back to the west coast style that started the IPA craze in America. and the IBUs are not as high as Rich thought
  • Marschwahnsinn Märzen: Well, this was a surprise! a Märzen in March? Is this a leftover keg from the Octoberfest season? Nope- BS Brew Works brews their Märzen style beer twice each year- once during Octoberfest season, and another during March Madn- ahem... the big basketball games during March (we can't legally say it on here)... The name is interesting, too, and quite a few people have different pronunciations- we'll let you listen in to find out!

067 - Virtual Beer Meet and Drink with Mitch and Rich

067 - Virtual Beer Meet and Drink with Mitch and Rich

After some much needed time away, Mitch and Rich jump back on the mics to discuss their favorite topic- BEER! Both brews get high marks from the guys- no beer is perfect, but these get pretty close.

Rich enjoys Southern Grist's 1000th unique beer, called... well... "1000th Unique Beer!" this New England double IPA is brewed with oats and is hopped with Citra (Rich's favorite hop), Galaxy (Rich's 2nd favorite hop), and Cashmere. The addition of oats creates a slightly creamy taste on a very juicy and hazy IPA. This beer is best enjoyed very cold, and Rich made sure to finish it before it warmed up too much.

Mitch, on the other hand, went to the dark side. North Coast Brewing's Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin didn't stand a chance once he cracked open the bottle. Clocking in at 11.6%, this behemoth of an already excellent Russian Imperial Stout is aged in oak whiskey barrels, adding a level of complexity that amplifies the chocolate and espresso notes in the flavor profile. Mitch was quick to point out that it needs to warm up a bit before he can truly experience all of its flavors.

From there, the discussion on the craft beer community begins. From brewery owners and head brewers, to experienced workers out in the field, Mitch and Rich already have discussions lined up that excites them for what 2023 has to offer.

We hope you enjoy our thoughts and discussions, and we can't wait to share our year with beer to the community!

066 - Tanasi Brewing & Supplies with Clinton Sallee (Owner and Brewer)

066 - Tanasi Brewing & Supplies with Clinton Sallee (Owner and Brewer)

Mitch and Rich land at Tanasi Brewing & Supplies. Named after the Cherokee word for TN and out of respect to the Cherokee tribes here before us, owner and operator Clinton Sallee graciously hosted us to a FULL FLIGHT of beers, and we couldn't have been more excited to oblige. This brewery retains the look of a gas station on the outside, but their “pumps” (or taps) located inside are meant to fill up your glass!

Watermelon Crawl: A silver medal award from the U.S Open and making it the 2nd best hard seltzer in the United States, this 5.1% ABV beverage is as easy to drink as it is flavorful. Unlike most seltzers, this was intentionally brewed with less carbonation to make it easier on the stomach.

Harvest Moon: This Kentucky Common is the brother of its more commonly known California Common, but less citrus forward. Coming in at 5.5% ABV and 22 IBU, this silver medal-awarded beer is creamy, light, and extremely complex from start to finish.

3 Hops & A Kot: Named after the military term 3 hots and a cot, Clinton created this 5.2% / 27 IBU Historical Beer/Kotbusser using sourwood honey and molasses to create a beer that changes flavors from molasses to honey as it warms up. Clinton gives us a lesson on glassware and serving beer at different temperatures.

Cheeky Wanker: The Beer Judge Certification Program organization dictates how a beer should look, taste, smell, and everything else... "Cheeky Beers" do not meet their strict specifications. Meet Cheeky Wanker, a 5.2% traditional southern English brown ale brewed with Dunkelweizen yeast- basically creating a hybrid of 2 different beers! Not overly sweet, this brew has slight notes of banana and clove on the finish, all while sticking to the traditional brown ale flavor

One Moher Stout: Named after the Cliffs of Moher in the Republic of Ireland, this Irish Stout has a dry finish with roasted barley and chocolate malt notes, this 4.5% ABV 27 IBU brew was so easy to drink that Rich accidentally drank his whole pour during the rinse break without even realizing it!

DMZ Dragon: Drinking this beer on national lager day! This brew is loaded with gochujang up front and kimchi on the finish. Notes of cabbage all throughout this beer make it an extremely interesting (and cloudy-looking) drink. 5.2% and 19 IBU

Night In Cork: One of the best Irish Reds Mitch & Rich have had, this 5.1% ABV beer adds black malt to the amber grains which creates a blood-red-looking brew.

Poivre Epice Saison: A Farmhouse Ale - Saison with Habanero Peppers, 6.4% ABV, 19 IBU. This beer is "present but not painful" (as described by Clinton). Mitch loves this beer, as the peppery notes are right up his alley!

Indigenous People: At this point, words become hard for Rich… Maybe too many beers? Either way, this American Amber beer is named after Indigenous People Day (which is right after Thanksgiving) to celebrate the people here before us. Easy drinking, but the 5.7% ABV will sneak up on you.

Hazy Ridge: Rich is all about hazies, and this one was awesome. He even went back later that evening to order a full pour! Clocking in at 6.9% and 59 IBUs, this brew was a great finisher to the flight.

065 - Chattanooga Brewing Co. with Alex and James

065 - Chattanooga Brewing Co. with Alex and James

Mitch and Rich go on the road and land in Chattanooga, TN! The city's beer scene has expanded even since the last time we visited. However, we started with the roots- Chattanooga Brewing Company. General Manager Alex and brewer James join us on the show and walk us through the many rounds of graciously provided beers:

Chattahooligan Kolsch:

a 4.2% easy drinking kolsch, brewed originally for the Chattanooga Football Club. This seasonal brew became so popular that it made its way in to the year round rotation. Extremely drinkable, brewed with Spalter Select hops to give a slight floral aroma and provides a crisp, clean finish.

Chestnut Street Brown Ale:

Named after the street in which Chattanooga Brewing resides, this fairly straight forward brew uses a large amount of Munich malt to bring the bready and biscuit flavor. Add some chocolate malts for the finish, and you have a 6.2% brown ale that is nothing to shy away from- but be careful because it drinks extremely easy for it's middle of the road ABV

Palisades IPA:

Featuring Centennial, Cascade, and dry hopped with Citra and Simcoe hops, this west coast IPA is not too "west coast" that it kicks you in the face- and the 6.5% ABV, think of this as an American IPA mixed with a west coast spin.

Wildwood Kettle Sour with Blackberry and Sage:

James and Alex set Rich's expectations and set the stage and, as usual, Rich is surprised that he likes (yet) another sour. Easy drinking, 5.2%, and lots of blackberry provides a lightly tart, yet sweet flavor. Add a solid malt backbone on the finish, and you're brought back to reality that this is, in fact beer- not juice. Oh, and this beer LOOKS beautiful.

Hot Mama: Habanero Lager:

Loaded with 40lbs of pure habanero juiced down in to concentrate, this beer starts with their base kolsch and adds a huge kick of fresh habanero peppers for a spicy but fresh peppery flavor. This beer works great for hot days, as it's refreshing at the same time!

Obscurum Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout:

This 10.1% barrel aged milk stout looks great, smells great, and TASTES DELICIOUS. Alex and James were kind enough to bring this big beer out as their finishing beer for us. Aged in Chattanooga Whiskey barrels, this brew boasts notes of vanilla, oak, cherry, and chocolate. Add a touch of milk sugar and you end with a thick, rich, dark, and smooth finish. Alex and James even brought out a separate bottle for Mitch and Rich to take back home with them- we plan on aging this for a few months!

064 - Pretentious Beer Tap Takeover at Craft Brewed

064 - Pretentious Beer Tap Takeover at Craft Brewed

If you're a craft beer drinker and you've ever been to Knoxville, you've most likely enjoyed a pint (or 3) of delicious beer at Pretentious Beer Co, and most likely you've enjoyed that beer from some of their homemade wicked glassware. Located in the heart of downtown Knoxville, TN, their distribution footprint has previously excluded Nashville... Until now. When Mitch and Rich found out that Nashville was being added to their list, they excitedly made their way down to Craft Brewed to enjoy some suds during the Pretentious Beer tap takeover. But it didn't stop there. The Pretentious owner and head brewers themselves showed up and sat down with us for a few to discuss the brewery's history, current, and future plans. Join Mitch and Rich as they talk with Matthew Cummings and Matthew Lillie about the Pretentious Beer Company and the other half of their adventure, Pretentious Glass Co. 063 - A Lunch At Cledis Oct. 16, 2022

063 - A Lunch At Cledis Oct. 16, 2022

Rich and Mitch are hungry AND thirsty, so what better place to hit up than a great burger and beer joint? Cledis Burgers, who took over the Various Artists Brewery location, is home to Nashville's newest burger joint, alongside 24 ALL LOCAL ever-changing taps.

While we do plan on talking to Shane Nasby (owner) in a future episode, the goal here was to take in the new scenery and support the local establishment. Rich and Mitch review a couple brews onsite while testing their new hardware setup.

Beers Consumed:

  1. Enders New England IPA (Living Waters): 7.5% Double dry hopped New England style IPA with Mosaic, Simcoe, and Amarillo for a luscious and slightly decadent experience. Ryan and the boys at Living Waters DOES NOT MISS.
  2. Howling Winds Scotch Ale (TennFold): a 5.6% Scotch Ale that goes down too easy, yet contains lots of complex flavors and a slightly smoky backend. TennFold doing what they do best- low to mid ABV brews with loads of flavors that allow you to enjoy more than 1 in a single sitting
  3. Pick 6 Porter (New Heights): a roasty delicate porter with hints of chocolate and a slightly higher IBU count than usual for a porter. clocking in at 6% ABV and 32 IBUs, this is exactly what you'd expect from the boys (and girls) at New Heights- a porter with a west coast spin.

062 - Common John Brewing Co. 2nd Anniversary Festival Details and Beer Tasting!

062 - Common John Brewing Co. 2nd Anniversary Festival Details and Beer Tasting!

Jon and LeBron Invite the Foamy Heads onsite to discuss Common John Brewing Co beers and to relay some details of their upcoming beer festival! There's so many great things happening and we had to talk to them about it.

Located in Manchester, TN, Common John Brewing Co was birthed out of the desire to bring their homebrews to the masses. What they didn't expect was that their beer and presence would catch on quick. After just 2 years of being open, they own a massive space with lots of scenery, sitting, and space for live events- which will house their HUGE 2nd-year anniversary family reunion on Saturday, October 1st.

Beers Consumed:

  1. Slow Down, Easy (Chapter VI): the 6th release of their hazy IPA series, coming in at a respectable easy 6.2% ABV. Produced with thiol boosting yeast to enhance the passion fruit, guava, and grapefruit aroma compounds from the hops. Hopped with Cryo Pop, Citra (Rich's favorite), and a new Vista hop (which Rich and Mitch hadn't heard of up to this point).
  2. The Darkness Callin': Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale: this almost 7% ABV Black IPA is the first release of its kind from Common John. Noticeably hoppier than other Black IPAs, this one was a hit with both Mitch and Rich!
  3. Straight & Narrow Colden Ale: easy drinking 4.2% golden ale that can be found on tap every day at CJBC. LeBron says this beer is so popular that if he stopped brewing it, he'd be dragged out to the parking lot and get knocked out!
  4. Better in the Fall Festbier: A brew golden in color all while being soft, sweet, and light. this 6% brew goes down easy and is great for the changing of the seasons!
  5. Heathen Child Vienna Lager: Intended to be a one-off, (read as the "Heathen Child"), the boys caved to the demand to bring this brew back. Slightly darker and higher in ABV than the traditional Vienna lager, this beer drinks smooth and packs a ton of flavor.
  6. Damage Control Pale Ale: Packed with Amarillo and Cascade hops, this 5.7% ABV and 50 IBU brew is the quintessential pale ale designed to make you forget about your worries.
  7. Deeper Purpose Porter: A slightly dry Porter with a touch of bitterness and full-bodied chocolate. At 5% ABV, it goes down easy but is a great sipper at the same time

061 - Only Cans

061 - Only Cans

The Foamy Heads take a break from their usual format of interviews with breweries in the industry. This episode focusses on Mitch and Rich enjoying 2 of Nashville's great Breweries- Bearded Iris and Living Waters! Today's episode is a great one! Beers Consumed: Bearded Iris & Hattie B's 10th Anniversary Ale: To celebrate Hattie B's 10th anniversary, they teamed up with Bearded Iris to brew this super crushable, low ABV fruited ale that goes down easy- and you'll be grateful it does because you'll need to keep this 4%er close by when eating that good hot chicken! While no Hattie B's was consumed during the making of this episode, Mitch and Rich get in to a discussion about how hot chicken has become of Nashville's staples.  Living Waters Highgate (NCC-1701-H): This version of their experimental IPA series leaves you wanting another almost immediately! Soft, citrusy, and grassy, Ryan and the guys at Living Waters know exactly what they're doing. Clocking in slightly above 8%, it's a beer you can drink 2 of, but it's heavy enough to leave you feeling satisfied in the end. Oh, and it has Citra hops- so Rich is automatically on board! 060 - Marrowbone Creek Brewing Co. - Ryan Jensen (Owner and Managing Partner at Marrowbone Creek Brewing Co. and The Cedar Tap)

The Foamy Heads visit Ryan Jensen of Marrowbone Creek Brewing Co! Ryan was kind enough to invite us down to the brewery on his day off to give us a private walkthrough and beer tasting.

Beers Consumed:
1) Barrel Conditioned Puzzel Fool's Gold: 1yr anniversary release of their Belgian Strong Golden Ale, clocking in at an 8.3% ABV
2) First Bloom American IPA: 6.2% ABV easy drinking IPA that brings nice floral notes (which Rich can't pick out, apparently)
3) Wintervakantie: Spiced winter Belgian, sitting at a nice 7.2%
4) Stone Heart Stout: another 1yr anniversary release, bringing the heat with a "10.1%" ABV

Lightning Round Bottle Share Beer:
Southern Grist Batch One Theory: 6th anniversary Cake. 13.5% Double Pastry Stout that's too big to handle solo! Thank goodness there were 3 of us so that we could tackle this bottle together. This was our appreciation gift to Ryan for his hospitality.

059 - Black Abbey Brewing - Carl Meier (President and Co-Founder) and Alex (Tap Room Manager)

The Foamy Heads visit Black Abbey Brewing located in Nashville, TN and talk to both Carl Meier and Alex right next to the taproom. We share some great beers with what's on tap, out of tap, and discuss how Luther flexed his mind during his times. We are stoked that we get to talk to the folks at Black Abbey. Carl definitely knows how to preach and we all learn something in this episode! We couldn't have asked for a better time. We can't wait to stop by again and pick back up where we left off!

*Be sure to drink a round or more of their Ukraine Relief beer, if they have any left. Donations from that beer go for a good cause. Cheers!

057 - Drinkers for Ukraine - Collaboration Anti-Imperial Stout featuring Tennfold, Fait La Force, and East Nashville Beer Works.

Join Mitch and Rich as they talk to Chad Mueller and Clayton Kendall (Tennfold), and Parker Loudermilk (Fait La Force) and dive into this freshly tapped stout that doesn't hold back on flavor. Here's the release information below:

This beer is an Anti-Imperial Stout originally created by Ukrainian brewers in solidarity. In an effort to raise money, for each of these pints sold, $2 will go to the Red Cross to help the Ukrainian people."

In solidarity with friends and colleagues in Ukraine, we’re coming together to raise funds for the Red Cross humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine following the Russian invasion in February 2022.

056 - Dogfish Head Craft Brewery - Heaven & Hell - Hand Poured From the Archives

Rich and Mitch drink Dogfish Head's 120 Minute IPA 2017 and World Wide Stout 2018. These two beers are put together in a glass as one would create a black and tan drink. This really was an aptly named concoction due to the insane ABV and flavors that are mixed together.

Archive Episode: This was recorded sometime in 2021. We had a lot of beers that needed some things said, so we ran the gamut and this was on of the pairings. One of the more fun beers to cover at any point in time.

048 - Sabbath Brewing LLC with Jeffrey Oparnica WORSHIP ✝ YOURSELF

Finally, we found a place to worship ourselves. Sabbath Brewing exists in East Atlanta Village. After seeing the brewery name listed on Google for more than two years, we finally get to walk through their doors and taste some brews. Upon our arrival, the stage is being prepared and their beer is flowing like the endless beer from Heiðrún in Valhalla. There’s a special Saison on tap that’s been brewed with Kelly’s Death Pickles. Deadly peppers in a Saison? Why not!? The taps are repurposed pipes from an old church organ. Murals of madness are above the casks. The walk-in is slapped to hell with all sorts of local and out-of-town slaps. Candles have melted and lay dormant where they lay. Aesthetics are super on point here. The bar’s stage is about to be set for the live shows and people are about ready to start the summoning. Hell yes, let’s rock.

During our visit to the beautiful Monday Night Preservation Society in Nashville, TN, Peter Kiley invited us to the mothership- a super open space with tables and outdoor seating based in the heart of downtown Atlanta, GA. Peter and the staff at Monday Night Brewing were very generous and hospitable in our visit as we tasted through their beers. So many good choices and every single beer this run were brewed with great care for the consumer. We were ecstatic to have Imaginary Grace again as well. We get new offerings that just so happened to release the same day we recorded as well as local-only selections on tap. Peter is extremely knowledgeable and educated us on all sorts of aspects about Monday Night Brewing beers and the insane amount of effort Monday Night Brewing crews put into each production. Join Mitch and Rich as we taste our way thru the ATL beer scene at Monday Night Brewing!

045 - Aaron Hortman from Main Street Liquor Store - Smokin' and Drankin' at Smoker's Abbey

We talk to the one and only Aaron Hortman from the Main Street Liquor Store! We had a helluva time. We usually set up shop somewhere close to folks' Homebase of operations, but I lost my table and Aaron knew the folks at Smoker's Abbey that were more than happy to oblige us for a space to use! HUGE shoutout to Smoker's Abbey and the Nashville crew. They are THE BEST place for cigars, pipe tobacco, and draft beer pours (always a slamming list to choose from). Good folks in this city. Back to the episode details: We drank mostly Aaron's beer. We offered up one of our 2020 Dark Lords while she shared a bodacious slew of craft beer and gueuze styles. I brought two personally highly anticipated IPAs (Run The Jewels collab and some sort of Street Shark can art IPA) but they were flat and dead. I suck. No honorable mention since I messed that gamut up. Listen and drink along with us as we crush these beers and talk craft beer and the cigars that accompanied our drinks!

044 - Josiah Trandahl, Owner and Head Brewer for Big Trouble Brewing Company

We were fortunate enough to visit a new brewery in Gallatin, TN, and to see behind the scenes where the magic happens! Josiah Trandahl is a wonderful host and is extremely welcoming to everyone. We get a full flight of every beer offering and we get to try the seltzer that he brews as well. (Psst, it's amazing!) The whole front of the house has 80s memorabilia from the bar and all the way to the walls. Posters that were rare to see in the US are framed and viewable in the main dining area. Vinyl/VHS/Magazine/Comics and more 80s misc create the surface of what you drink over at the bar. You can spend a good amount of time taking it all in. The building has a super rad and colorful painted wall that you CAN'T-MISS when you drive by it. Local artists have claimed two walls, one exterior and one interior to amplify the 80s era in both graphic and movie themes.

The beer selections are a little limited at the moment as he expands his taps and continues brewing. However, for every single beer we had, we wanted to get an additional pour. (Spoiler, we did just that after recording and ordered some food as well.) The line-up is incredible with his own couple of twists for the styles. The names for the beers are great to read too. You know there's some inspiration behind every release and if I were you, I'd be on the lookout for every drop.

Big Trouble Brewing - A great space to hang with your family and order some food and drinks at. The atmosphere is bright, inviting, and eclectic for all this 80s. Check them out in Gallatin, TN since they are now open!
