From Grief to Gold

From Grief to Gold

By Melissa Anne

Much like the Japanese art known as kintsugi or kintsukuroi, we're repairing the broken pieces of ourselves by mending it with gold. Learning ways to put back together that which feels broken, and renewing it.

46. People Pleasing and the Impact of Saying No

It's my first episode for 2024 (third of season 3...) and today I wanted to share about people pleasing and the impact saying no has had on me so far this year (and since the last episode recording I made.)

From withdrawing from my masters program, saying no to certain relationships, and opportunities... having a successful start of the year business-wise. While trusting the process. Knowing that opportunities will be there when the time is right.

Sometimes life can be hard. It can be even harder to find the good in the storms. In this episode I wanted to briefly share the story behind my "never tell me the odds" tattoo, and how even though life can be really hard, we can still persevere and find good within.

We're starting season 3! I just turned 31 this week, and it is the start of a new season in life. On this episode I wanted to touch on some changes going on moving forward, mental health struggles, and suicide prevention month. Suicidal ideations aren't a foreign experience to me, and often is something people don't talk about.

I also wanted to share about some of the major updates (like a brand new website) to From Grief to Gold, and my official launch for my accountability coaching health and wellness program!

41. What does it really mean to give yourself grace?

41. What does it really mean to give yourself grace?

The Google definition of "grace" as a verb is: to do honor or credit to someone or something by ones presence

We're constantly told to give ourselves grace. With people saying thing's like "you're doing a good job, doing your best, give yourself grace."

Presence doesn't mean you're doing anything, it just means you're there.

Give yourself grace. It doesn't matter what you do, what you didn't do.. giving yourself grace is honoring your presence. Did you show up?

It doesn't matter what you did, or how much you did, but did you show up?

If you didn't show up well then.... you better start showing up.

But were you present?

Showing up can mean something so different for literally anyone that's listening.

Beating self up so much from an entrepreneurial aspect / motherly aspect because I could have done more, done better.. all the ways I could improve.

rather than look... I'm exhausted, this is all that I'm balancing, and this is all the energy I have to give.

We don't have to do all the cookie cutter - highlight reel.

If all the energy you have is "average" that's okay. Because there will be days when you can give so much more, and there will be days when you just don't have it.

Part of that grace is in being okay simply existing. Honoring that you simply being present can be enough.

Are you showing up the best that you can right now?

What you're doing right now is enough.

Because later on, that simply showing up will have a ripple effect later on in life. Whether it's "just showing up" for a networking event, or a therapy session, or a partner, child, friend.

Even the smallest pebble affects the water.

You matter.

39. Reflections as we head into Quarter 3 of 2023: what I would change, what I would do differently, and what I'm grateful for

In this episode I discuss all things relating to reflection. We're in Quarter 3 of 2023 as many entrepreneur or entrepreneurs are aware of for the year. So I felt it was the perfect time to speak on reflection in general.

Next month I'll be turning 31, so I thought I'd reflect a little on all of my could have, should have, would have, such as getting accepted into premed school, joining the military, acceptance to flight medic school, traveling Europe, and all things not according to plan.

My biggest reminder is to look at positive reflection. Because the truth is that things are never as bad as they seemed.

Don't get me wrong... "ish" can suck, but never as bad as seemed in our head. (We're really creative). Of course take that with a grain of salt because there are definitely periods where things really suck for a while and I'm not going to sugar coat it. In fact I'm still recovering from my own "ish sucks" but even with that... it was never as bad as I thought it would be.

Becoming a mom also came with me realizing that the nine to five life wasn't it. Daycare is expensive and if your job doesn't pay you enough... not worth it. Coming from the military not certified to be any of the things, and the realism of being an EMT and a mother of a newborn... I needed the creativity and becoming a photographer then branding and web design and realizing that I didn't even want to stay in the medical field. So I got into marketing instead.

None of these opportunities would have happened had I not been creative.

Resiliency training - mandatory. Number of shitty situations and still able to stay me.

I share my lack of support, burnout. How much entrepreneurs need people that support you on your endeavors, because the waters aren't easy to swim through.

My late husband's death helped me snap out of giving up on my dreams. I didn't want to be a nurse, I didn't want to do it in the military. Yes entrepreneurship has been hard, but at least I enjoy what I do when I do it.

I ended up having the most successful wedding photography year of my life after becoming a widow. But then I knew it wasn't where I needed to be. I missed military/health care aspect of me. I just knew something was missing. So I began looking into mental health fields and what I would need to do to support service members.

"Am I ready?" A huge reflection question I had. But I don't think we're ever ready. Become ready through experience. Even example of my podcast. Only 38 episodes in. It's all learning, all reflecting, and important to realize that we are ever evolving and ever expanding, and we don't have to stay put.

We can make a change whenever, not just the new year.

reflect, improve on, what's been great, and what should we never do again?

What would I be curious about doing to see if it improves things? Beauty of being human and ever evolving. Oftentimes people get scared of change, or of what people might think if they take that chance.

Have this vision / idea but if you don't take that chance, and maybe you fail...

I felt aligned and spiraled into an abyss for like a year and a half...

How have I improved? What could I do better? What could I do different next time?

But sometimes you don't know until you know. have to experience to know if it was right or wrong for you.

Figuring out how to run my own business did save my life. Needed my business to be able to balance income and being a mother.

Life is hard sometimes. But I'm really grateful still to this day that I've kept this entrepreneurial spirit. Yes I have catching up to do, but so much growth has occurred. It doesn't have to just be your bank account, it's all of the things combined.

29. Discussing struggles with identity, Dry January as a local craft beer lover, and the power that words and thoughts have over our lives

29. Discussing struggles with identity, Dry January as a local craft beer lover, and the power that words and thoughts have over our lives

Are you aligned with who you want to be?

If not, how can you stop self-sabotaging and start rewiring to become who you want to be?

In today's episode I discuss identity, dry January, and the importance of our words and thoughts. I share about our constant thought processes, and how they affect our day to day. How to work on the power of positivity without being toxic, because shit is allowed to suck sometimes.  How journaling and mindset work can greatly improve your life. That it's okay if you feel like you're spiraling backwards, because 1% better than yesterday is still better.

With mindset, it's important to focus on the why (positive thing) rather than the why (negative thing) while giving grace because we are creatures of habit. I also discuss a bit about the Full Moon in Cancer that we just had on January 6th and the relation to the beauty of insecurities coming up when it comes to the healing process.

We're allowed to change. Even though we are creatures of habits, we can create new habits.

27. Mental health stigma within the military, feelings of disconnect, and life after military service with Ryan of Vet with a Mic

Today was a very casual episode where I talk with Ryan, of Vet with a Mic Podcast.

Ryan was an MA in the Navy (similar to a police force) prior to pursuing a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology. He now places a focus on connecting with fellow veterans on his podcast.

In this episode we discuss life after uniform, feeling a sense of purpose, disconnection from those we knew prior to serving, and what to do after the uniform comes off for the last time.

A major struggle within the veteran community if feelings relating to lack of identity after their service. We dive into this topic a bit, the culture of the military and how it differs from traditional civilian life as well.

We also touch base on the mental health space within the military branches, the problems within the chain of command, lack of confidentiality, and the stigma commonly seen when it comes to veterans seeking behavioral health related help.

Towards the end of this episode we start to nerd out a big more about psychology and neuroscience before closing with Ryan's own recommendations for someone transitioning from the military.

22. Finding new ways of healing from trauma despite failed attempts in the past, a conversation with Revival Society

Today I had the opportunity to speak with Danielle, one of the Founders of Revival Society. We dove into the importance of hope in the healing process, and giving just one more try. Healing from trauma won't look the same for everyone, some methods that worked for one person won't work for another, but there is still hope for healing.

Danielle is a Co-Founder and Foundational Trauma Practitioner of Revival Society®. She is a proud wife and mama to her two boys. She loves giving back to others and being a voice for the underdog. She is on a mission to save a million lives.

From a young age, she was always intuitive. After struggling with her own health issues and unexpectedly getting pregnant, she was led to her full purpose: to teach individuals how to build their emotional foundation, so they can reverse their feelings of doubt, trauma and unresolved pains. Danielle works with one’s soul to figure out why the individual can’t fully move forward and hasn't been able to release their emotional pain. She is here to share a new perspective of one’s triggering memories and strained relationships to finally create a calm and peaceful life through The Moment to Moment Method™ that has changed hundreds of people’s lives over the last 7 years.

21. The downside of being a high functioning person and the importance of slowing down

21. The downside of being a high functioning person and the importance of slowing down

After a four month hiatus, I'm back and here to remind you that slowing down is productive, and pausing doesn't mean you're failing, especially if you're a high functioning person.

In this episode I wanted to share some updates about the healing process of coming out of dissociation/DPDR, the turmoil that can come when needing to prioritize your mental health while starting a new business venture, as well as some of the highlights that have happened in my life over the last few months.

I experienced being an event planning associate for the Military Influencer Conference, joined the Spouse-ly team as a Growth Marketing Strategist, and officially decided to become a performance coach for high functioning entrepreneurial minded people.

I share about letting go of the outcome, allowing things to simply be, accepting that part of the human experience is allowing in all emotions, and remembering to love ourselves where we're at right now.

Another key portion of this episode is me sharing about the difficulties of being high functioning, despite looking to the outside world like we have it all together, and how detrimental it is for our health to take care of that before our bodies force us to pause.

20. Good is in store regardless of your hardships currently faced. You are cared for and loved.

Good is in store. Despite negative headspace, things are still working out in your favor. Even if it feels scary. Continue to have faith and trust that the overall mission of your life. Even if life sucks sometimes. Even if you’re stuck in trials and tribulations. There is still beauty to be found in it, and this pause and redirection to be found. Also sharing my elevator speech that would need to go to the 11th floor. But feeling so aligned! Side tangent to ADHD/ADD self assessments with primary care providers, and the struggle when you’re not interested in something. But I wanted to share that it’s also okay to suck, to fail, and to not be where you wanted to be. Because things can get better. And you will find alignment. Even if it wasn’t at all as you had originally planned. Good is in store. Keep the end goal in mind.

Trust your intuition, listen to that gut instinct, and know that whatever you're going through right now will prepare you for what is in store.

PS: Excited to share that From Grief to Gold has a brand new podcast cover that's much more me. It also showcases that despite the sh... storms, good is still in store.

19. Grieving the loss of a brother while overseas in Afghanistan, processing post deployment life, and the healing journey with Scott DeLuzio

On today's episode of From Grief to Gold, I had the honor of hosting Scott DeLuzio on my podcast.

We initially connected over social media because we were both writing and publishing around the same time, so I'm really glad to have him as my first guest for this podcast.

We talk about: The healing journey he went through from being overseas and losing his brother that was also downrange in Afghanistan, the stresses of combat, and coming back from deployment and readjusting to civilian life. We also dive into the creation of Scott's book, "Surviving Son," and the healing journey he's been on over the last 12 years.

He shares about how his book isn't just his story of combat, but his brother's story. What military families go through when deployed, if someone doesn't make it back home, and how it affects everyone. All with a goal of having others be a little more empathetic with one another.

We discuss therapy options. How it's okay to ask for help, and continue to ask for help if and when needed. But it's also important to be realistic about the timeframe for healing and growth in mental health, just like with a broken bone or other injury.

18. Things I would do different if I was starting a podcast from scratch after a year of making episodes for From Grief to Gold

17. Finding ways to remember the death of a loved one, and crying in the grocery store aisle.

17. Finding ways to remember the death of a loved one, and crying in the grocery store aisle.

Today's episode I wanted to share some transparency on the grieving process, particularly when it comes to the deathiversary, or death anniversary. The truth is that I was on the verge of crying in a grocery store aisle because of an item not being available at the stores I visited.

I talk about why this item mattered so much to me, the backstory behind it, and the grief journey.

I also touch base on the approval of being sad about "silly" or "dumb" things, and that they aren't really those things. What matters to you is important. Your healing matters. Remembrance matters.

I reference my abandonment issues on a very brief level, as a "lost puppy syndrome" that I've dealt with a number of times over the years. If you happen to be someone that has spend a career working in attachment styles, I would love to connect for a podcast episode to discuss things!

In final, I share about the ebook updates, people that are coming up on my podcast, and my excitement about July 7th being the 1 Year Anniversary and start of my guest podcast episodes! Bonus is a touch on being a recovering perfectionist.

16. Diving into the 3 D's: Dissociation, Depersonalization, and Derealization and how spirituality has helped me with the healing journey

In today’s episode of From Grief to Gold, I dive into the 3 D's: dissociation, depersonalization, and derealization and how spirituality has helped me with the healing journey. I share about my religious background in Christianity, my love for understanding different faiths, and my period of a complete lack of any beliefs at all.

In the episode I also hint at burn out as both a business owner and a mother, which I'll have to do a later episode on specifically.

If you’re someone that’s in a spiritual background, I would love to get connected.

Whether in sharing indigenous spiritual practice, new age beliefs, or religion. I would love to connect and hear from you, and how your spiritual beliefs have helped you with your mental health and how you see the world.

July 7th is the start of me sharing the guest episodes, and the official one year celebration of my imperfect creation of a mental health focused podcast! I have military veterans, coaches, those that struggled with IVF, and so forth. I'm also still welcoming different challenges to be shared. Get in touch with me and we can see if we're a good fit!

Thank you for listening, I hope it was beneficial for you!

14. Money mindset, learning to let go of expectations, and trusting the process even amidst the storm of life and financial stressors

Welcome to episode 14 of the From Grief to Gold Podcast!

Today I wanted to talk about money mindsets, letting go of the outcome, and not beating ourselves up so much when things don't go as planned. Learning to trust the process even amidst the storm. I share about my expectations when I moved to Chattanooga this year and the reality of where I am five months later. In more student loan debt, and still choosing to focus on the positive.

The struggles of not getting hired after almost a decade of entrepreneurial life and finally deciding to bet on myself instead. Trusting there is a reason for why doors didn't open. Balancing working as a single parent and the only caregiver of my child. Learning to not take things so personally. Seeing what I can learn from these different experiences, and having faith that it will all work out. Even if you have to bawl in the bathroom from time to time.

I finally chose to focus on what I can control instead of what's out of my control. Because no amount of stressing will fix the problem. And remembering the bigger focus.

Thank you for listening, I hope it was beneficial for you!
