Write Your Own Story - Meet my friend, Marcus Moorman
I first met Marcus nine years ago when he began services at my nonprofit, Puzzle Pieces. He had big goals for himself from day one, never letting his disability hold him back or stop him from dreaming. One of those dreams was to be on stage sharing his love for dance. Marcus connected with a local dance studio, where he was able to find a job and perform on stage in front of thousands of people. Marcus secured a second job at Great American Cookie Company, where he excels at customer service and cookie decorating. But Marcus’ biggest goal was to live independently. With the help of our team at Puzzle Pieces and Marcus’ dedication to learning the necessary life skills to make his dream happen, he moved into his own apartment.
Don’t miss Marcus’ full story! His accomplishments are incredible and offer so much hope for parents raising a child with a disability.

Dealing with Trolls on Social Media
If you have a space in the world of social media, you are familiar with the negativity that can creep in. Just recently, I had some internet trolls light up my comments in a reel that I posted. They questioned me as a mom, the intentions behind my platform and my advocacy. But here’s a lot more to a person and their story than what a post or reel can portray, right? Join me and let’s talk about our current world of social media and how we can prevent our moods from reflecting our comment section.

From the outside, she had the textbook perfect life. But in 2021, Maggie turned her life upside down. She felt stuck in a rut and dreamed of MORE… She made a lifestyle change, prioritized her health, and eventually quit her job. She bet on herself and overcame the fear of making a change.

Guest Amanda Powell, Finding Strength & Resilience in Life’s Journey
Meet Amanda, a local mom from my hometown, who didn’t let a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis at 22 stop her from pursuing the life she wanted. She pursued her dream of becoming a teacher, wife and mom. The resiliency she has learned through living with her disease prepared her for the cerebral palsy diagnosis of her fifth child, Georgia, who is immobile and nonverbal. Amanda talks vulnerably about the limits of her body, how she fights through everyday battles, including the guilt she feels for not being able to help care for her child with special needs, and how she finds joy in the hard — thanks to her faith and her five children watching her.

What kind of snowball are you?
This podcast may just be the kick in the butt you need.
As a kid, when you want to create a really big snowball, you find a hill and roll the ball downhill to make it bigger. That snowball can gain momentum and become something huge.
Our lives are kind of like that snowball. We take the same shape that our momentum creates. How big is your snowball? Do you have the momentum you want in your life? Or have you even started to create your snowball?
Start today. Just take a step forward, a step outside of your comfort zone. Do something different today that you haven’t done before. Stretch yourself and begin to form a habit that will give you the momentum you need to start building your snowball.

Faith Found in Trauma - My Family Beach Vacation Story
***Warning: This episode discusses a traumatic beach experience where I almost lost my husband and son in the ocean. If you have experienced drowning or something similar, this podcast episode can be triggering.***
This episode was tough. I wasn’t sure I was going to share this story. But after talking to my husband and my son, we all decided it was important to share. On our Spring Break beach vacation, my husband and son were pulled out into the ocean by a rip current. If it were not for two strangers on the beach who jumped into action, I would have lost my husband and son. In this episode, I recount the story, how the trauma changed our family and how we found our faith through it all.
If we can help just one family, our trauma can have purpose. I hope you will listen, educate yourself on the dangers of rip currents, and how you can find faith through your darkest moments.

Restoration, Self-Care & Gratitude - chatting with Kara Ryska
I love Kara’s energy. In her own podcast, she locks arms with other special needs moms, sharing her own story of raising a child with multiple brain tumors. Kara is raw and vulnerable about her journey and I loved chatting with her in this week’s episode of Fuel Your Purpose. We talk about redefining the “recovery” phase as a mom of a medically complex child to the “restoration” phase. Kara shares how to find the right self-care, and how that’s different from self-comfort. And as a contributor to The Gratitude Journal, she talks about the misconceptions of being grateful for a special needs journey.
Hit play and hear our whole conversation!
Want to connect with Kara? Follow her at @thespecialneedsmompodcast, visit her website kararyska.com or find her podcast on all major platforms.
Kara Ryska is the host and creator of The Special Needs Mom Podcast, a show exclusively focused on supporting mothers who parent children with disabilities and/or medical complexities. Kara is a mother to four children, one of which is the survivor of multiple brain tumors and survives with a spectrum of medical conditions and disabilities.

Calling Your Own Shots - an interview with Keylonda Wheeler of KeylondaWrites
I am so happy I found Keylonda on Instagram! What a joy and light for the disability community. She is a shining example of living life on purpose and supporting inclusion!
Keylonda is a speech therapist by trade. When she didn’t see kids with disabilities – like the ones she helped in therapy – represented in children’s books, Keylonda decided to write her own. She didn’t want kids to miss out on friendships, just because they weren’t exposed to children with disabilities.
Don’t miss this episode where we talk about calling your own shot. Keylonda encourages you to change your self-talk from, “why me?” to “why not me?” Hit play and be inspired by my new friend, Keylonda!
Want to know more about Keylonda?
You can follow her @KeylondaWrites and or visit her website keylondawrites.com for more information on her books and services.
Keylonda Wheeler has always had a passion for helping others which inspired her to earn a degree in speech pathology. Practicing speech and language therapy in public, private, and virtual schools for several years, she has become increasingly aware of the need to create literature that brings acceptance of differences and disabilities. This awareness inspired her to write her children’s book series, the Inclusive K.R.E.W.E., bringing representation of disabled children. She and her husband, Jackie, along with their two children reside in Louisiana. When Keylonda is not empowering and encouraging others through her work, she can be found dancing and cooking in the kitchen.

100th episode - What I would tell my younger self
What would I tell my younger self? For me, this means before I started my nonprofit. Before I left my teaching job in pursuit of my dreams. Before I began my leadership journey. What would I tell younger Amanda? Put in the work to become the best version of myself. Imagine how different those first years of my nonprofit would have been if I had worked on myself then like I am doing now. That commitment to myself, to my self-worth and self confidence are not something I learned in college. Becoming aligned to my purpose has taken me years, but how different the last decade would have been if I had put in the work sooner. This is your wake-up call! Don’t be like me - invest in YOU now, not 10 years from now.

Grief & Grace - Chatting with Misty Coy Snyder from Happiness is Down Syndrome

"Must be Nice"
Girl, are you saying this? I was. I can’t count how many times I used this phrase, in my head and out loud. A friend is taking a vacation? Must be nice. A colleague received an award? Must be nice. But when someone used this phrase to me about a recent fundraiser I put on for my nonprofit, those three words hit me in the gut. By telling someone it “must be nice” to have a big win, we discredit their achievement. Those three words take away from the years of hard work that it took to get to that moment. Hit play and learn about how this phrase changed my perspective on how I show up for others.

Gap vs. Gain
Need a game changing book for 2023? I can’t recommend The Gap & The Gain by Dan Sullivan enough. I loved it so much I’m dedicating a whole podcast to it!
Learn about a gap vs. gain mindset and how you can turn feelings of “not good enough” into finding the wins in what you have achieved. There is value in being still and realizing what you have accomplished. It’s this reflection that will bring you clarity to see how far you’ve come and in turn, build your confidence to keep going.

Empowered Women Empower Women - Is this really true?
Empowering women – what does this even mean and how do we accomplish this? Empowerment is not doing things for other women or giving them authority. It’s not locking arms and leading them in the right direction. To me, empowerment is owning my own mission, crushing my goals and sharing my story, which can help the women in your life open their own door. The best way to empower women is by helping her gain the confidence to do the damn thing and do it in her own way. Join me as I dive deeper into this idea of women empowering women.

Showing Up & Calling Your Own Shots - talking with my mentor, Kacia Ghetmiri
There wouldn’t be a Fuel Your Purpose podcast if it wasn't for Kacia Ghetmiri. I stumbled upon her podcast empowerHER and I was hooked.
She got out of her own way to create the life she wanted and she’s empowering women – including me! – to do the same.
In this podcast, Kacia and I talk about:
➡️ Confidence
➡️ Gut feelings
➡️ Giving ourselves grace when we break promises to ourselves
➡️ Grit & resiliency
➡️ Fueling yourself and showing up for YOU
➡️ Finding your community of hype women
➡️ Finding and aligning to your purpose
Is this the first time you have heard of Kacia? She’s the woman we ALL NEED in our corner.
Kacia Ghetmiri is a life enthusiast, multi-passionate entrepreneur, speaker, event host, and podcaster who's on a mission to help women unapologetically share their voice & message with the world.
Along with hosting her own podcast empowerHER, which surpassed 6 million downloads in under 4 years, she has helped over 350 women launch, grow and monetize their own shows, and hosts her own annual event “empowerHER Live” for hundreds of women to connect in person.
Kacia has found that what's often holding women back is the thoughts that they think about who they are & what they are capable of so she takes her knowledge from working with hundreds of entrepreneurs over the years, paired with her high energy bubbly personality and a "Come with me, let's figure this out together" approach to light a fire under their booty to get out of their own way & go!

Stop Focusing on Who Isn't Showing Up
This week, my nonprofit celebrated 10 years of service with a big community event. It was magical and a huge success. I am proud of myself, which is a hard thing to say. But if I am being honest, I found myself focusing on the people who didn’t show up for my big night. Rather than concentrating on the people right in front of me, I was wasting time wondering why people weren’t in that room. Join me and let’s talk about why we do this and how we can avoid this negative thinking this holiday season.

Fear for a Sibling
For children, fear can be a very real thing. Whether it is perceived or not, fear can be a challenging emotion to process. This is especially true for children who have a sibling with a disability. They may not express it, but these children fear what will happen to them and their sibling should something happen to their parents. Join me as I share my sibling story and talk through my own fears surrounding my big brother, Nick. Grab a tissue, this is an emotional one.

Adult Friendships are Hard
Finding your people can be a challenge, especially for women. We compare. We compete. We worry about what everyone else thinks of us. And when we begin our professional careers and have a family, we don’t prioritize time for friendships. We need to surround ourselves with people that fuel us and not necessarily the people that we spend the most time with. Join me and let’s chat about finding friends and the joy those relationships can bring.

Halloween Hot Topics
Halloween for families impacted by disabilities can be a difficult night. Sensory issues and anxiety are likely on a night of costumes and asking strangers for candy. On this podcast, I talk about all of the Halloween hot topics - like how we can make the holiday more inclusive, the meaning behind different colored pumpkins pails, and the appropriate age for costumes and trick or treating.

5 Strategies for Nonprofit Leaders
Building my nonprofit, Puzzle Pieces, is literally a dream come true. We began serving 32 clients and now serve more than 400. We opened the doors with four staff members and now employ over 100 with a $5 million operating budget. I have learned a lot along the way and I want to give other nonprofit leaders the top 5 strategies I have learned over the last decade of running Puzzle Pieces.

How Your Life Feels Is WAY More Important Than How It Looks
What you see on social media is not real life. The photos we curate and put out in the world don’t accurately portray the hills and valleys of our every day. So, stop comparing and competing. Start building a life that feels good and forget about how it looks to others. Grab a drink and let’s talk about navigating life in an Instagram world and how to focus more on happiness rather than perfection.

Power of Influence
One of my biggest points of growth as a leader has been understanding my mindset regarding professional titles. Growing up, hard work and showing up meant more than a title on a resume. But 10 years after opening my nonprofit, I now understand that to some, titles hold value. Some see titles as motivation, an end goal. With this understanding, I have made it a point to create a culture of teamwork to push us forward. I want my people to understand they have value and can lead, regardless of a title. I don’t want to create managers and supervisors. I want to create influencers.

Knowing Your Worth
I am constantly trying to convince others to go against the grain. Whether that’s shouting that women deserve an equal seat at the table or that individuals with disabilities like my brother deserve the opportunity to work and be equal citizens in their communities. I advocate for others to see the worth in everyone, but sometimes I struggle to see my own worth and fail to see the value in the person that I am. Join me today and let’s talk about knowing your worth and listen to some wise women on what they believe self worth means.
