STEAM Dream Team: Indigeneering

STEAM Dream Team: Indigeneering

In this episode, Hannah, Holly, and Ali chat with Jasmine McDermott, Indigenous engineering student,  and Deanna Burgart, Indigenous engineering instructor, about being an Indigeneer (Indigenous Engineer) and their experiences as Indigenous women in the engineering field. We released this episode a day early in honour of Orange Shirt Day, a day dedicated to the coming together of communities in the spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters. It is a day to reflect and remember the harm and violence that was perpetrated through Residential Schools. As important as it is to remember the trauma and harm that was inflicted upon Indigenous children and communities, it is also important to celebrate and honour the incredible achievements and brilliance of Indigenous members of our community, like Jasmine and Deanna.

Big thanks to our incredible guests for being so open with their sharing with us.

STEAM Dream Team: A tribute to Mary Fowler

STEAM Dream Team: A tribute to Mary Fowler

In this very special episode, Hannah sits down with her friend of 15 years, Sue Fowler Dacey to chat about her mum, Mary Fowler, who was the first woman to graduate with a degree in engineering at McGill and all of Quebec. Mary graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1946 after 4 years of being the only woman in her classes, and a full year after high school advocating to be allowed into the program despite the fact "that girls don't do engineering". We are grateful to Sue for sharing stories of her mom's experience and grateful to Mary for her tenacious and stubborn spirit.

STEAM Dream Team: Intersectionality

Ali, Hannah, and Holly meet up (virtually, of course!) with the engineering STEAM Dream Team- Manpreet, Caroline, Stephanie, Annemarie, Sheliza, and Jasmine to continue their conversation about what it's like to be women in engineering, but this time, they address more aspects of their identity. Be sure to check out our most recent Spill the s(TEA)m episode to learn more about intersectionality, and check out the first half of our conversation about gender and engineering.

Spill the s(TEA)m: Gender and STEAM

Hannah, Holly, and Ali spill the s(TEA)M about GENDER and STEM/STEAM.

What is the gender gap in STEAM?  What is the "leaky pipe"?  These questions and more are answered in this episode of Full STEAM Ahead. The majority of the facts and info are from NSERC's 2017 report on Women in Science and Engineering (check it out here: https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/_doc/Reports-Rapports/WISE2017_e.pdf)
