Listen to our conversation with Kári Helgason, Head of Research & Innovation at Carbfix. From his start in astrophysics and work at NASA, Kári chose to tackle a more pressing problem closer to home and go to work in the carbon capture and storage industry in Iceland. Taking advantage of Iceland’s zero carbon electric grid and porous basalt rock formations, Carbfix is providing some of the lowest if not the lowest cost per ton of CO2 captured and stored. Looking at deploying their technologies in other areas of the world with similar geology, as well as the construction of a marine terminal to have captured CO2 from Europe shipped to Iceland for storage, Carbfix is working towards its pathway at sequestering a Megaton of CO2 within the next 5 years.

Carbon Market Ep 11 - Jason Vallis (Planetary Tech and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancements)
Listen to our conversation with Jason Vallis, Vice President of External Relations for Planetary Tech. Focusing on drawing down carbon through a process that absorbs carbon from the atmosphere to lock it away in the ocean, as well as decreasing ocean acidity (another impact of increasing atmospheric CO2).  Their Accelerated Carbon Transmission (ACT) Platform is designed to take mine tailings as the feedstock, as well as water and renewable power, to create their antacid (alkaline) compound that is introduced into the ocean. The by-products of the process are valuable metals and hydrogen which create an additional revenue stream for the process, as well as providing an economic incentive for the treatment of mine tailings. A growing startup, Planetary Tech’s goal is to remove 1 Billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2035 through a novel process that resolves several environmental problems with one solution.

Carbon Market Ep 10 - Jim Mann (The Future Forest Company and scaling up carbon sequestration)
Join our conversation with Jim Mann, Founder and CEO of the Future Forest Company.   Based in Scotland, the Future Forest Company aims to produce long term carbon capture through reforestation, biochar production and enhanced rock weathering (carbon reacting rock dust) to increase the carbon sequestration capacity of agricultural land and forests.   Currently focusing on how best to deploy these technologies for fastest possible scaling up in order to reach the goal of making a sizable contribution to the need for carbon sequestration.  Targets are for removing 3M tons of CO2 by 2030, with the aim of becoming the first company to achieve a billion tons of carbon removed.   The company is funded principally by selling verified carbon offsets to enable companies to eliminate the last remaining aspect of their carbon footprint, which represents a potential market of 10 to 20 billion tons of carbon.

Getting his start in the oil industry, Daniel Hoof was inspired by the huge possibilities of seaweed to draw down carbon, stimulate biodiversity and do so in a commercially viable fashion. In 2020 he founded Kelp Blue. Primarily Focusing on creating products for the bio stimulant market, for use as plant stimulants for the organic agricultural market. Fast growing kelp forest have the ability to lock away carbon into the depth of the ocean as well as providing for increased biodiversity for marine species. Currently developing a pilot project to be launched within the next year, with a plan to expand soon thereafter. Kelp Blue, looks forward to developing the full potential of kelp farming.

Circular Economy Ep 11 - Melissa Barbosa (Ikea and the power of the 100% commitment)
Join us for our conversation with Melissa Barbosa, Head of Sustainability at Ikea Group. As a major global brand, Ikea has set a goal of being completely zero waste and climate positive (reducing more GHG emissions that it emits) and committed to responsible sourcing.  The timeline they have set to achieve this is 2030. By 2025 they aim to have zero GHG emissions for their delivery service, and in Canada they have already introduced zero emission delivery and service​ in several markets, as well as producing more power than their operations consume via wind and solar installations. Well on their way to achieve these targets, Ikea has taken a 100% approach in their goals and as such have looked at every aspect of their business and supply chains to develop their business in a full circular model. From switching to more sustainable packaging, creating a service to bring back used Ikea furniture for an in-store discount, and even a plant based Swedish meatballs now served in their restaurant service, there is no end to the number of initiatives this industry leader is taking on.

As past CEO of Passive House Canada and someone who has built and sold Passive House buildings, and lives in one, he is familiar with the costs and benefits of highly efficient buildings. As the most stringent energy efficiency standard in the world, Passive House buildings require up to 90% less heating and cooling energy than conventional buildings in addition to improving affordability, thermal comfort, air quality and noise reduction. From being a novel building practice a decade ago, millions of square feet of both new and retrofit Passive House projects are being undertaken in Canada alone.  Both components and expertise are now easier to find, offering a promising path to decarbonization of the building sector.

With the ability to utilize waste wood products and locking away half of the carbon content from the initial bio-feedstock into solid form, AirTerra is able to permanently sequester the carbon in the soil while also improving it.

The second line of business deals with tackling methane emissions from organic waste, food and animal waste and turning them into renewable natural gas. Having developed the ability to create Graphene by extracting carbon from natural gas, GMG has been busy developing ways to utilize this super material to accelerate the development of reduced and zero carbon technologies. Using the remarkable properties for heat transfer of these materials, GMG is commercializing specialized coatings to be used for air conditioner systems that will dramatically reduce the energy efficiency of these systems. Also in development is an Aluminum-ion based battery with significant improvements over Li-ion technology in performance and environmental impact that GMG is working to bring to market within a year starting in specialized consumer electronics applications initially.   Having the potential to revolutionize the battery technology, this will definitely be one company to follow.

Join our conversation with Gray Alton, Vice President of Project Development at Terrapin Geothermics in Edmonton AB. Pioneering conventional geothermal power generation in Alberta, Terrapin is looking to take advantage of the untapped geothermal capacity in northern Alberta to create a baseload and renewable zero carbon energy source. Terrapin is currently working on their Alberta No 1 project to drill down 4km to access a geothermal heat resource to run a large-scale electrical generating facility along with a district heating supply network. The second line of Terrapin’s business is taking advantage of recovering waste heat from industrial processes and generating electricity to reduce their electrical grid consumption or generate revenue with the sale of the power generated. With an estimated 60% of the energy we create as a society lost as a waste heat, there is a massive opportunity for zero carbon power generation.

Carbon Market Ep 4 Joseph Pallant (Blockchain for Climate Foundation & the impact of Cryptocurency)
Join our conversation with Joseph Pallant, Founder of Blockchain for Climate Foundation.   As an avid supporter of blockchain technology, Joseph has been leading the development of a blockchain platform to enable issuance and exchange of international carbon credits under the Paris Agreement.   Utilizing the tools available on Ethereum blockchain ecosystem to issue Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) allows each ton of carbon credit to carry all of the information around the project that created it, how its moved from there, to its eventual "retirement" against a carbon footprint.  Blockchain for Climate Foundation's "BITMO Platform" is live as a beta version on Ethereum's Rinkeby testnet. As the target market and initial use case for this platform is national governments seeking to issue and exchange Paris-compliant carbon credits, the team is now seeking national government partners to trial, collaborate on, and if desired, eventually champion its use.   We'll also discuss the current carbon footprint of cryptocurrency, and new innovation being done to create a sustainable pathway both in terms of reducing and offsetting emissions for cryptocurrency mining and development of proof of stake consensus mechanism for developing new crypto coins produced at greatly reduced energy intensity.

With Lithium battery demand continuing to rise and the extraction of raw materials creating more pressure on our environment, new and lucrative opportunities are arising to re-use end-of-life batteries and battery manufacturing scrap to create less expensive and less intensive sources. Li-Cycle can supply Lithium to the industry at a cost advantage compared to the mining industry by recuperating up to 95% of the material from old batteries and battery scrap producing new lithium battery materials. With plans to list on the NYSE, build a third facility in Phoenix, and expand globally, Li-Cycle is aiming to become the #1 domestic supplier of cobalt and nickel sulphates.  Working with their partners they plan to grow their collection network and recover as many end of life batteries as possible to meet rising demand for batteries now and in the future.

Join our conversation with Jennifer Wagner, President of CarbonCure. The recent winner of the $20M NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE for their innovation in developing solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry. Founded in 2007, CarbonCure has seen increased growth over the last several years, and their technology is now being used by 350 concrete plants around the world. Their process involves injecting captured CO2 from other sources into the concrete mixing process and locking it permanently away as it mineralizes into the concrete structure increasing the strength of the structure allowing the reduction of the cement needed in the mix thereby also reducing the CO2 generated in cement manufacturing.

Carbon Market Ep 2 - Gerard Campeau (UR One and Carbon Capture Technology)
Listen to our conversation with Gerard Campeau, CO Chief Technical Officer of UR One inc. located in Ontario. UR One Inc. is a start-up that manufacturers equipment that captures and purifies fossil fuel emission from up to MW power plants. Removing oxides from fossil fuel combustion by capturing emissions containing CO, CO2, NOx, SO and SO2 from the emissions exhaust. Based on air purification technology utilizing electricity and recycled water, this process called Carbon Dissociation Technology (CDST) separates the Carbon, Sulphur, Nitrogen from oxides to end up with  Carbon, Nitrogen and Sulphur in elemental form that can be resold as a value added commodity. Eliminating the need to utilize chemical absorbents, and membranes, removing the need to sequester or store liquid carbon dioxide underground.  Instead CDST technology collects these valuable materials as Carbon Black, Fullerenes, Sulphurs through this separation process offering a simpler and less expansive solution for purifying emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. The one step system eliminates all pre-treatment steps required in traditional CCS and CCUS technologies, further reducing the CAPEX and OPEX costs.

Such as working on turning plastic bag waste into asphalt, we need to look at a number of solutions to transform our linear waste system to one that is truly circular with all waste finding it’s way back to the value stream.

Hydrogen Ep 11 - Gideon Grader (H2Pro & New Lower Cost and High Efficiency Electrolyzer Technology)
Listen to our conversation with Professor Gideon Grader of Technion and Co-Founder of H2Pro.  Borne out of Technion’s decade old energy research program, H2Pro is the commercial upstart bringing this technology to market.   Using a newly developed two stage process that doesen’t require a membrane for separation of oxygen and hydrogen, H2Pro has developed a lower cost and highly efficient (up to 95% efficient) electrolyser system. With strong funding backing from a diverse group of Japanese and American industry partners, H2Pro is moving ahead with building a development factory to build a commercial prototype by 2022 leading to the rollout of several pilot projects planned for 2023.   The product should be commercially available by 2024 and will be aimed for large scale power applications.

Join us for a conversation with Flavio Ortigao Owner and Chief Technical Officer at Recupera, as we explore his solution for turning plastic waste into hydrogen and new plastics. Originally from Brazil and now located in Sweden, Flavio has been highly involved in chemistry and biotech before putting his knowledge to work on solving the plastic waste crisis.  His system processes the waste via a closed loop Low-Temperature reactor able to break down plastic waste into its basic elements and turn it into high grade hydrogen via syngas (for use in virgin plastic production). By creating valuable feedstock for several types of industry, he makes available a more affordable solution for the disposal of waste plastic.

Starting his career as a professor of biology, David has followed his interest in energy systems from the botanical world to that of human systems and has become a leader in the planning of transition pathways  to Net Zero energy systems. Working with the Transition Accelerator to develop hydrogen hubs across Canada, David is accelerating the production and use of low carbon hydrogen as a fuel for both domestic demand and for new international markets that are quickly emerging.

A pioneer of Canadian innovation in Hydrogen, from his days as a graduate student involved in building hydrogen cars to working as a senior official in several hydrogen technology start-ups in Ontario. Next Hydrogen specializes in building modular drop-in electrolyser units that are capable of processing large intermittent sources of electricity and converting it into Hydrogen efficiently. Current clients include Canadian Tire distribution facilities and Next Hydrogen is looking to expand beyond the province of Ontario.

Hydrogen Episode 6 - New Wave Hydrogen Inc (low carbon hydrogen from methane)
Join us for our conversation with Kathleen O'Neil, a founder and CEO of two innovative clean tech companies.  One company focuses on Carbon Capture and the second one, incorporated in Canada, is developing a new and innovative Methane heating and cracking (pyrolysis) technology to separate the Hydrogen and Carbon components from Natural Gas in a way where no CO2 is produced.  This low energy technology turns methane into Hydrogen and Carbon Black (a solid form of Carbon that can be used in other industrial processes). She has been at work developing this technology since 2016, and with over $9M in industry and government funding New Wave Hydrogen is conducting field pilots and looking to move toward commercial pilot scales by 2025.   This technology will open the door for distributed and centralized Hydrogen production with low energy requirements and with zero carbon dioxide, offering the potential for significant reductions in GHG emissions in Western Canada and globally.

Join us for our conversation with Badr Abduljawad, Co-Founder and Director of Operations with Hydra Energy.  As someone who has completely embraced the west coast life, Badr was drawn to Vancouver to play a part in the Hydrogen economy. Along with co-founder Simon Pickup, they have pioneered Hydrogen as a Service (HAAS) and created the easy button for the transportation industry.  Converting truck fleets to be able to run hydrogen in a co-combustion process with diesel fuel, providing the fueling infrastructure and hydrogen source with no upfront cost, it's never been easier for companies to move onto the road to zero emissions. Operating in British Columbia and working on expanding the number of fleet vehicles served, Hydra has come up with an effective model to resolve the supply and demand balance of an emerging hydrogen economy.

Maggie Hanna is our local explorer and energy futurist.  Principal of Common Ground Energy Corporation and a fellow with the Energy Future Labs, she is based out of Calgary Alberta. Starting her career as a geologist for the mineral industry, switched into oil and gas exploration for several decades and then worked a technology scout for the oil and gas industry in Alberta, she now is an advocate of a sustainable energy transition and has worked tirelessly to advance new technological innovation in Western Canada. In our conversation we look at what is possible out of a Hydrogen economy for Western Canada from the perspective of someone who knows the Alberta oil and gas industry very intimately. Hydrogen Episode 3 - Zen Clean Energy Systems and AZETEC Hydrogen Truck Project
Jeff Grant is a pioneer in the fuel cell industry who after 16 years at Ballard Power Systems founded Zen Clean Energy Solutions 5 years ago to further implementation work of clean energy projects for various clients. His company has worked with Sun Line Transit of California to electrify their entire bus Fleet to zero emission and as the lead partner of the Alberta Zero Emission Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC) project. With AZETEC, Zen has worked with various regional partners to create a $15M demonstration project to create a Calgary to Edmonton zero emission heavy truck corridor using Hydrogen technology to test and validate a new Hydrogen Electric truck design to meet heavy duty performance specifications for the Alberta industry. Zen has also brought their vision to the national stage as the lead author of the Government of Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy for Canada and continue to further bring to reality a zero-emission future.

Today we are interviewing Grace Quan, the CEO of Hydrogen in Motion. A Vancouver based company developing a new innovative way to facilitate the storage and distribution of hydrogen, consisting of a solid-state tank system operating at low pressure for storing Hydrogen to be in used in multiple applications. Using an innovative new nanotechnology to create a unique storage media that stores low pressure hydrogen like a sponge. These containers can be quickly swapped out or easily refilled. H2M is currently working on 3 demonstrations projects, a hydrogen powered flying drone, a train locomotive conversion to hydrogen and deploying a 3 wheeled vehicle in India (Tuk Tuk style). Hydrogen Episode 1 - Engine Hydrogen Injection System (Innovative Hydrogen Solutions)
Join me today for our conversation with Joe Williams of Innovative Hydrogen Solutions, a company borne out of a commitment to reducing air pollution through technology. Their Hydrogen Injection System is a compact add on system for heavy truck, standalone generators and marine diesel engines that dramatically changes the combustion dynamic to cause significant impacts on fuel consumption (15-35% reduction) and particulate emissions (86% reductions). A transition technology available now, financeable, and produces significant maintenance savings.  A great example where investing in profit produces a reduction in environmental impacts, and with a Return on Investment of 9 - 14 months this is one worth considering. A simple safe design, the system needs only some distilled water added to produce low volume levels of hydrogen that enters the engine intake to produce the desired and significant effect.  Already deployed on heavy trucks on Canadian roads, Danish Ferry’s, and hospital generators in Pakistan, we are talking about a proven and global product.
