S8 EP093 Cathie Ostapchuk and Anu George: WHO TOLD YOU NO

Welcome to Season 8 Episode 93, where we're exploring the theme "Who Told You No?"! Cathie and Anu had a fantastic conversation about her upbringing and leadership at a young age, her season of No from God and how we anticipate no’s

Anu has 13 years of leadership experience with International Justice Mission (IJM). In South Asia, she served as the Director of Operations, the Director of National Interventions and the Director of Legal. During her time with IJM, Anu has worked extensively to impact justice systems by collaborating with state and local governments in South Asia.

She has used her creative communications skills to bring social issues to the public’s attention by writing and producing radio dramas and street theatre with social messages. Her dedication to the empowerment of people who are vulnerable to poverty and violence, her vision for social change, and knowledge about international issues, have all led to Anu being awarded several honours; one of which was being recognized as a Sauvé Scholar by the Canadian government. She represented South Asia as a Youth Ambassador to Dhaka in 2003 through the National Cadet Corps, with the status of a Diplomat as a Cultural and Military Attaché.

S07 E085: Shireen Spencer & Rebecca Doner: ALL THE THINGS

This episode features an inspiring conversation with Rebecca Doner and Shireen Spencer asking how do we figure out how to do “all the things” When God is calling us to something He is often calling us to say no to something else and we are not always good at that. They talk about letting go and how we do not have to everything, we just need to be doing the things that God is calling us to do.

Shireen on the danger of comparison and how it can stop us from stepping into what God has for us:

“We compare ourselves to what other people are doing. Failure is a big piece because I already don’t feel good about myself, I already can not be that woman, I could never be as good as…and we fall into this whole comparison thing which then leads us into negativity talk which then leads us to believe that it is just not for us.”

Shireen in her words is FIRST the daughter of the most High God. She is also an author, speaker, podcast host, a Christian recording artist as well as a Church of the Nazarene credentialed minister who has served since 2005.  She is working to connect people to God through the Word, Worship and Working Relationships. Shireen has pastored in two different churches working with youth, families and couples; leading worship, choirs and preaching.  She is expanding her ministry to work with churches and Christian organizations in the areas of speaking, worship leading, and working with couples. Shireen is also a Gather Women Internship Alumni and one of our brilliant and faithful Gather Blog contributors.

S07 E084: Ligia Andrade & Cathie: ALL THE THINGS

This episode features an inspiring conversation with Cathie Ostapchuk and Ligia Andrade all about knowing your value from God while feeling pressure to prove yourself amidst culture expectations and injustice.

Ligia on what what drives her passion in this season:

“Sometimes I still feel that I need to prove myself not from a place of worth. But just because of who I am - a woman and a Latina. Because I can not change those things. So, what I often do is surrender that all at the feet of Jesus and not have those two things bear weight as me as a person.”

Ligia is a wife, mother, ministry leader, but most importantly, she is a daughter of God. She and her husband, Alan Andrade, are the proud parents of three beautiful children and a pup.
Ligia loves sitting in coffee shops and connecting with various people from her community, either online or in-person, to share her story of God’s goodness and faithfulness throughout her life. Ligia was born in Antigua, Guatemala. Her parents were church planters who illegally immigrated to the USA, and were then given the opportunity to establish their young family in Canada.
Ligia, along with her husband, launched ANEW Ministries which is dedicated to building community, nurturing friendships, and fostering the love of God by connecting women.
Ligia is passionate about seeing others experience the redeeming power of Jesus and is committed to being hands and feet of Jesus in her community.

S07 E083 Advent Week 4 - Peace with Lori Jones

S07 E083 Advent Week 4 - Peace with Lori Jones

This week we wrap up our special four-part advent series on Advent by diving into the topic of peace. Rebecca sits down with her great friend and sister-in-law Lori Doner Jones to start a conversation with all of you about how we can all find Peace this Christmas season.

Lori Doner Jones on Finding Peace:

“I think that peace is pretty elusive in our culture right now, I think that there is a real problem with people feeling any sense of peace, and think it is because we are all striving and we are all constantly seeking some kind of contentment that just seems out of our reach”

“I think most women have that nature to want to fix everything and to want to control it and think part of having peace is about accepting that we do not control everything, that God is sovereign and that there are going to be moments in life, a lot of moments in life where we have to accept that it is not going to look perfect.”

Lori Doner Jones leads the Women’s Ministry at Springvale Church, and is the founder of a ministry called REVIVE. REVIVE challenges women to seek God with determined purpose by being a space of opportunity and encouragement for women who are called to teach and speak. Lori is a wife of almost 22 years and mother to two sweet daughters. Lori is a gifted Bible teacher and writer has recently helped write and teach the curriculum for Springvale’s most recent Bible Study in Ephesians and is working on helping write a new study coming in the spring.

S07 E082 Advent Week 3 - Joy with Shelley Bechtold

S07 E082 Advent Week 3 - Joy with Shelley Bechtold

Continuing in our break from our incredible conversation with ordinary, yet extraordinary women all across Canada in our ALL THE THINGS series we move to the next week of our special Four-Part Advent Series. This week Cathie and Shelley from Operation Christmas Child sit down and talk about what it means to truly seek JOY this Christmas season.

Shelley on why having joy as the focus is so important:

"Galations 5 talks about joy being a fruit of the sprit. So, being spirit-filled is more the goal than being joy-filled. Joy comes from gratitude in who God is and how He is working through us. We have strength to choose gratitude over our circumstances."

Shelley Bechtold is the Partnerships and Promotions Manager for Operation Christmas Child.  She lives in Strathmore, Alberta with her husband Warren and their cat, Keelan, who is an only child.  Her work allows her to share with people the wondrous things that God is doing through the gift filled shoeboxes distributed around the world.   Shelley greatly values the power of prayer so often find her in the warehouse walking and praying.   You can follow her on Instagram @Shoebox_Shelley or Facebook  @Shelley Bechtold OCC where she posts regularly all things shoebox and her passion for the ministry.  You can follow Operation Christmas Child Canada both on Instagram @OCC_Canada and Facebook @Operation Christmas Child Canada.

S07 E081 Advent Week 2 - LOVE with Stacy Mattheis

Continuing in our break from our incredible conversation with ordinary, yet extraordinary women all across Canada in our ALL THE THINGS series we move to the next week of our special Four-Part Advent Series. This week Rebecca and Stacy, friends and both members of the Exec. Team here at Gather Women jump into conversation about all things LOVE.

Stacy on the simplicity and magnitude of God’s love:

“Love is a recognition that I can’t do this on my own and that because I am sacrificially loved and given the gift of salvation who am I to pick and choose and to take something where the beauty of it is the simplicity of it. Sometimes we try to dress it up, but that is just not what it is. This Christmas I hope we can all find the simplicity of God’s love and just stand in it.”

Stacy Mattheis lives in Red Deer, Alberta with her husband Tyler and two of their three adult children. Stacy homeschooled all three, has served in many different areas of ministry in her local church from Women’s Ministry, technical teams, spiritual formation, family ministry, and she is a key member of the Executive Team of Gather Women. S07 E078: Kim Hutchins & Rebecca: ALL THE THINGS

S07 E078: Kim Hutchins & Rebecca: ALL THE THINGS

This episode features a great conversation with Rebecca and Kim Hutchins from North of Toronto, ON about balancing all the things they do, and how there is freedom found in realizing we should be championing one another and that we are not in competition with one another as we are all called differently and defined in Christ. That “we are all working together for God in our own way, but we are all working as one body” (Kim)

Kim on the freedom of recognizing the value of all we do and our time:

“I think it comes down to the fear that if I show my weakness or I show my hand that I have all these things in the air then they are not going to ask me or consider me for this project or position, so I think we kind of hold our cards close as a protection so we can look like we have it all together but I don’t know about you, but recently I have found a freedom in just letting it all out”

Kim Hutchins is a homeschooling, house-renovating, fitness-loving wife with four kids who has transformed her passion for serving in her local church into a growing ministry that equips the Canadian Church for greater influence through serving.

S07 E077: Jaclyn Weidner & Cathie: ALL THE THINGS

This episode features a stunning conversation with Cathie and Jaclyn Weidner from just outside of Vancouver, BC. Cathie and Jaclyn dive into topics like capacity, life in different seasons and stirking balance when you feel called by God to do “all the things’. You are not going to want to miss this fun, valuable and inviting conversation!

Jaclyn On the discerning of God’s direction:

“It’s really learning to pause before I say “Yes” to something, to pray and to ask questions because I have had those seasons where I have said yes to something really because I didn’t want to miss out….and again I probably have learned more in my mistakes than when I made the right decision.”

Jaclyn Weidner is a wife and mom of 3 energetic and talkative little girls. She loves to dive deep in conversation over a strong cup of coffee and get to the "good stuff." She loves Jesus and after He pulled her out of a deep pit of anxiety and depression she has been on a mission to share that freedom with other women. S06 E009: How we are influenced

S06 E009: How we are influenced

In this episode, Elena Haskell interviews Rebecca Sherbino (The Raw Carrot co-founder) about how she influenced her most. Elena Haskell is an enthusiastic and relationship-oriented person.  She has lived in India, Australia and has spent time in Germany and on First Nation Reserves in Northern Ontario. After 10 years of being a stay-at-home mom to 3 wonderful (and sometimes full of drama!) girls and a husband doing a PhD, Elena felt that God was calling her to be actively engaged in Christian ministry.  In pursuit of where God is leading, she is completing her third year in Spiritual Formation through the Emmaus Formation Center and is on a journey to “find her voice” with Gather Women. She has always enjoyed leading and organizing Women’s Groups, being involved in church leadership, and prayer ministry in the various churches where she has been an active participant. Rebecca Sherbino, with an undergraduate Degree in Global Development, Peace and Justice and a master’s degree in International Development, Rebecca has always had a passion for working with people. Living in 5 countries abroad and working for 4 years in Sustainable Community Development in Malawi and Sudan, Africa, she developed an acute awareness of the issues facing vulnerable and marginalized communities. Her work in developing countries fueled a desire to pursue justice for people both overseas and at home, which resulted in community advocacy in Paris.  After adopting 2 children in Africa, Rebecca & her husband moved back to Canada to raise their young children; completing their family with the addition of 1 biological child.  Rebecca is the co-founder of The Raw Carrot Soup Enterprise. https://therawcarrot.com/ Gather Influence Co-hosts: Cathie Ostapchuk - Instagram @cathieostapchuk Vanessa Hoyes - Instagram @vanessahoyes Gather Women @gatherwomen Episode co-host Elena Haskell - Instagram @haskellelena Rebecca Sherbino - Instagram @peelingforchange

S06 E007: Living Creatively with The Holy Spirit & The Unapologetic Church

In this episode, first you will hear Kaitlyn Cey and Jocelyn Freeman have a conversation on Living Creatively with the Holy Spirit. Jocelyn is a Pastor at Jubilee Christian Centre in Calgary, Alberta. She has become a trusted voice and mentor, teacher, and speaker. Jocelyn is known for her daring and creative speaking style. She isn’t afraid to think outside of the box to capture her audience’s attention. She is an inspirational presenter who openly shares her story and experiences.

Next Elizabeth Ojo talks with Annie on The Apologetic Church as millennial women, whose generation often embrace the invitation to address controversial topics such as women in church leadership. In an era where "Cancel Culture" is unfortunately prevalent, how should the church navigate tough topics? They believe that the church should be aware of the perception of the world but not conform nor be a slave to it.

The church and its response towards current events should be rooted in the bible and once the truth is unapologetically spoken, although it may be perceived as offensive, they know that the whole truth is freeing. They encourage all women to take new ground and their prayer is that the church’s message, fully rooted in the Word, will lead the way as many women boldly step into their calling.

S06 E006: Voices of Adventure and Obedience

S06 E006: Voices of Adventure and Obedience

In this episode, first you will hear Caroline Thiessen and  Lauren Greene. Their conversation will help encourage other women to put their faith into action and will encourage women to walk in wholeness and freedom.

How and where do you find your identity? Your true, authentic identity is solely found in Christ. When your identity is built on a firm foundation that doesn’t change and is constant you have the strength and ability to trust without borders and have the confidence to take bold Godly risks.

Why aren’t we living with such boldness and faith like the people in The Bible? We worship an almighty and all-powerful God who can do anything. If we truly believe God is the God of the impossible shouldn’t our lives reflect that? When your identity is strong, firm and you know who you are in Christ you can believe the promises He has spoken to you with bold confidence and trust that He will come through for you no matter your surrounding circumstances.

Next, as a former ‘risk manager,’ Jen shares her personal story of how she became a ‘risk taker’ by learning how to silence the inner critic, accept God’s invitation, embrace risk and simply start saying one “yes” at a time.

Jen explains that her pattern of risk aversion had spiritual implications. By staying in her  “comfort zone” she wasn’t letting Jesus be LORD of her life. This way of living was robbing her of a deeper intimacy with Him.

Our relationship with God is meant to be one of trust and abiding, obedience and faith. A life of adventure with Him! We must open our hands in surrender to God, fill our hearts with his promises, and put our faith into action by stepping into all that he has for us.

Let this story and teaching encourage you to say “Yes” to God’s invitation to join him where he is at work in this season of your life. Go ahead and do that ‘thing’ he’s asking you to do, knowing that risk is always safe with God and watch your life be transformed.

S06 E005: The Value and Voices of Women Serving and Growing in the Nation

In this episode,

Nicola Bartel interviews Rachelle Ashbee, Program and Outreach Services director at Mercy Canada.

They discuss about:

· The diversity and Commonalities of women

· The Value and Voices of Women and why they matter

· Women in all expressions of leadership

Next, Kim Hutchins talks with Emily McDougall and Cami Greenleaf. They discuss the impact of others on their lives. They also dive into who influenced and encouraged them to grow in their walk with Jesus.

Out of this conversation comes the revelation of just how important it is to speak truth into the lives of others. They encourage everyone to take a moment to ask God what He wants us to see about other people and to have a heart for them, so that we can encourage everyone around us and open up opportunities to share the gospel and encourage others to grow in their relationship with Jesus.

This conversation reminds us that it is so important to create a safe place for others to dream big dreams and recognize that God has some amazing plans we are blessed to be a part of. And we have an opportunity to tell others who they are becoming by speaking God’s truth into their lives. I was blessed by this conversation and I am praying that it will be a blessing to you as well!

S06 E002: Voices of the Next Gen in Our Nation

In this episode we will hear from two incredible women from the Gather Voices 2021 cohort.

Joyce Chang interviews Gabrielle Phua on the topic of being wholly content.

Christians are often told to be content, to be grateful for what we have. But the reality is, life happens. Sometimes we just want more or better. Sometimes we just can’t help but compare, control, and perfect. Desires are not always bad, but we need to be careful that it doesn’t change our attitude towards God, and therefore, our relationship with him. So, what does it look like to be content with who we are and where we are in life? The secret lies in stopping, reflecting, and giving thanks. A discipline that can and needs to be trained in an overwhelming world. Join Joyce Chang and Gabrielle Phua as they chat about the complexity of being content in every season.

Next, we will hear Kaitlyn Tabet interview Hannah Hansen on raising and releasing the next generation.

How do we support the next generation of girls as they develop their faith? As cultural norms shift around mental health, rest, and acceptance; leaders are developing a part of faith focused on support we haven’t seen in young leaders before. We also look at the struggle of fighting for Justice and mercy in the cancel culture we live in. Lean into this conversation to learn more about how to support and encourage the next generation of leaders.

Join Vanessa and Cathie as John and Angela share the story of how the Lead Pastor role at Relate Church in Surrey, BC was stepped in to by Angela - the surprises and the confirmation of that choice, along with the opposition and the affirmation that brought.

This is a fascinating true story of passing the torch from one generation to the next, and what that looked like and felt like for both the passers on, Ps. John and Helen Burns, and for Angela.

S:05 E:60 Akua Carmichael and Cathie Ostapchuk on Addressing our blind spots: How the church is a hindrance or help in the battle against gender inequity and racism

Our sightline has been focused on what we can see - the tip of the iceberg where we claim there is unity for all in the church.

However, underneath is the weighty iceberg itself, systemic gender and race inequity, powerful forces that have always existed despite our professions of oneness in Christ.

Join Akua Carmichael and Cathie Ostapchuk as they share their message from The global Justice Conference, covering 11 countries and thousands in attendance. They candidly address the causes and consequences of gender and race inequity and how the church can either be a hindrance or a help in boldly proclaiming the dignity of all women and all races while supporting them in equal voice and presence in the kingdom.

S05 E056: Can Women Lead?

It is 2021 and yet we are unbelievably still asking the question "Can Women Lead?"

What is the importance of being able to back up this question with credible information from Biblical precedent supported by a real life model of how a church can flourish by opening the door to women's gifts.

Chris & Elita, authors of The Whole Church join Vanessa & Cathie in a lively and vulnerable conversation on their personal journeys as male and female church leaders in pursuing a win win solution.
