Too Ashamed to Start Over? This Is What You Need to Hear

If you’ve just hit rock bottom—or you're stuck in the guilt, fear, and shame of financial failure—this episode is for you.

In this raw and compassionate conversation, Steve shares what really keeps people from starting over, and why the problem isn’t your finances—it’s the weight you’re still carrying. You’ll hear powerful stories from his time as the debt coach on the reality show Starting Over, including one unforgettable moment with a woman buried in financial shame… and the two surprising lessons he walked away with.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why advice like “just be grateful” doesn’t help when you’re grieving

  • The real reason you can’t move forward yet—and how to know when you’re ready

  • What a widower taught a doctor (and Steve) about starting over after deep loss

  • How to shift from shame to forward motion—without pretending you're okay

This episode isn’t a lecture. It’s a light in the dark. And if you’re feeling stuck, scared, or lost... I promise, there’s a path forward—and it starts here.

Dave Ramsey… We Should Talk About This?

Dave Ramsey… We Should Talk About This?

Millions swear by Dave Ramsey’s advice—but what if following it blindly is costing you more than you realize?

In this episode, Steve opens up a respectful but honest conversation about:

- Why Dave’s advice works for some… and hurts others.

- The hidden cost of the “pay it all off first” mindset.

- Why relying only on debit cards might be riskier than you think.

- What the U.S. Constitution says about bankruptcy (yes, really).

- How lost retirement time can quietly rob you of a million dollars.

- The moral guilt around debt—and whether it’s helping or harming you.

We’re not here to bash Dave—we’re here to question what’s right for you. Because financial freedom doesn’t come from one-size-fits-all advice. It comes from critical thinking, compassion, and math that actually works.

🧠 It’s not about rejecting everything Ramsey teaches—it’s about making room for options he often leaves out. Like legal bankruptcy relief, better credit habits, and protecting your future instead of punishing your past.

This isn’t a takedown. It’s a talk. And if you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to “do the right thing” financially, this might be the episode that finally sets you free.

🎧 Listen in and decide for yourself.

You Just Got Sold Out and Abandoned: How the CFPB and Congress Just Put Your Finances at Risk

Payday loans, overdraft fees, and financial protection—everything you thought was regulated just got turned upside down.

If you've ever struggled with payday loans, overdraft charges, or found yourself trapped in high-interest debt, you can't afford to miss this. Steve and Damon break down exactly how these changes can impact your bank account, why overdraft fees are spiking from $5 to $35 or more, and what practical steps you can take right now to protect your money. Packed with clear financial advice, actionable debt solutions, and the truth banks don’t want you to know—this is the podcast episode your wallet needs.

In this episode, I dive deep into the overwhelming world of debt elimination and explore the often-unspoken truths about how debt elimination affects our lives. We uncover the emotional weight that comes with financial struggle and how even the most responsible individuals can feel like they’re in a never-ending cycle, working hard yet getting nowhere. I share the story of Jason, a relatable figure whose seemingly stable life is overshadowed by the silent battle of financial stress, reminding listeners that they’re not alone in this fight.
I introduce three distinct paths to achieving debt elimination so that you can take control of your financial future. First, I discuss the often-taboo topic of bankruptcy. While it may not be what many want to consider, I illuminate how filing for bankruptcy can actually serve as a significant reset, allowing individuals to stop the relentless cycle of payments and regain their financial footing. Studies suggesting that those who file for bankruptcy fare better financially in the long run lend credence to this route as one worth exploring.
Next, I detail the brick-by-brick method, also known as the snowball or avalanche approach. I explain how this method involves rolling up your sleeves to tackle debts systematically based on either balance or interest rate. While this process can be slower and may temporarily hinder retirement savings, the satisfaction of watching debts vanish creates an emotional momentum that can propel you forward. I also recommend practical tools like the Acorns app, which helps users save effortlessly while paying down debt, ensuring a brighter financial future.
The third path I examine is the negotiator's route, which includes settlements and debt coaching. I introduce my co-host, Damon Day, who specializes in helping individuals negotiate their debts and create personalized plans. Through our conversation, we address the prevalence of scams in the debt relief industry and emphasize the importance of seeking guidance from experienced professionals, especially when the process feels overwhelming.
Throughout the episode, I challenge harmful myths surrounding debt and advocate for a shift in mindset, asserting that a person's worth is not tied to their financial struggles. I provide actionable steps for listeners, such as listing their debts, exploring all options—including bankruptcy— and utilizing the wealth of resources available on my website, getoutofdebt.org.
As we wrap up our discussion, I reiterate that making minimum payments is not equivalent to a victory in the battle against debt. Real freedom lies in confronting and managing debt head-on. I encourage listeners to embrace their stories, take the first critical steps toward financial independence, and remind them that they hold more power than they might realize. The journey to debt relief is not a straight path, but with determination and the right knowledge, it’s entirely attainable.

Fries Now, Regret Later? Klarna, DoorDash & the Debt Trap You Didn’t See Coming

Explore the financial implications of financing food. Steve and Damon unpack the true costs of using Klarna for deliveries.

In this episode of the Get Out of Debt Guy Podcast, Steve and Damon dive into the mind-boggling world of financing your fries. That’s right—DoorDash is now letting you pay for takeout in installments with Klarna. Sounds convenient… but is it a clever trick or a financial trap?

From missed payments tanking your credit score to racking up phantom debt for burgers and burritos, we unpack the real cost of this global trend. You’ll hear why Klarna loves your Big Mac more than you do, how impulse spending feels cheaper when it’s split into four payments, and why this isn’t all that different from charging beer emergencies in the '80s.

Plus, Damon shares a contrarian take no one else is talking about (yep, it involves tips, side hustles, and a woman who DoorDashed a $600 Target order), and we hit you with a dose of reality: just because you can finance fast food doesn't mean you should.

🍟 Fast food meets funny money—get ready to laugh, learn, and maybe rethink that late-night DoorDash.
If this hits close to home, boop that like button and don’t forget to subscribe. And if you’re drowning in Klarna payments or thinking about flipping the script and becoming a delivery driver, Damon’s got your back at

🚗💸 Final tip: Before you Klarna your cravings, consider delivering the fries instead of financing them.
