Atal Agarwal, Founder, Immigrant First: Green card applications using AI
š On episode 89 of the GMI Rocket show, Iām speaking with an immigration tech founder who was let go while on an H-1B visa and launched a startup in response to help others avoid that same fate, Atal Agarwal, Founder of Immigrant First.
Originally from India where he received an engineering degree from one of the prestigious IIT schools, Atal came to the US and was on a J-1 visa, F-1 visa and eventually an H-1B visa, worked as a software engineer, and even got a masterās at UC Santa Barbara.
His career was going swimmingly until, in 2022, he found himself part of a layoff - his H-1B-sponsored job was no longer, and he now had 60 days to either find a new job or leave the US.
Over the next 2 months, Atal published a day-by-day account of his layoff which went viral, completed an Ironman race, and found a company that heard his plea and offered him a job.
But while he was seemingly spared, Atal felt he suffered an injustice. And, as he started using ChatGPT to draft his own green card application, Immigrant First was born.
So, hereās what Atal and I are going to be talking about:
- Atalās early life in India, studies at IIT and how he came to the US,
- Atalās first impression of the US immigration system and his H-1B career progression
- How Atal suddenly got laid off, and what happened in that first 60 days
- What inspired Atal to use AI for his own green card and how that became Immigrant First
- What Immigrant First does today and Atalās vision for the company and immigration tech
And more!

Marc Pavlopoulos, CEO, Syndesus: Canadian PEO for US tech startups & talent
š Episode 88 of the GMI Rocket show is a special one for me: I get to talk to and profile long-time colleague and friend Marc Pavlopoulos, CEO of Syndesus, about Canadian immigration and how US tech companies can benefit from it.
Marc, whose roots are from Greece but who was born in and grew up in the US, attended business school in Toronto, and worked in a number of startups, both in Toronto and Silicon Valley.
Over those many years in the startup world, Marc recognized that one of the biggest needs most startups had were tech workers.
At the same time, his experience getting a student visa and a work visa in Canada made him realize how much simpler Canadian immigration was (and is) than US immigration.
So in 2014, he left his last job and launched Syndesus, which now helps US companies hire foreign-born tech workers remotely in Canada (focused on those who lose the H-1B lottery), matches vetted, skilled tech workers with Canadian employers, and provides PEO services in Canada.
Hereās what Marc and I are going to be talking about:
- Marcās familyās immigration story and his early years growing up and in school
- How Marc got into the startup world in 90s and what it was like before the Dot Com crash
- Marcās experience as a foreign student and worker in Canada
- What inspired Marc to launch Syndesus and what the company did in the early days
- What Syndesus does today and Marcās view of the future or Canadian PEO + tech
And more!
So please join us, ask questions and leave comments!

Sergio Torres, CEO, Alvva: FinTech helping immigrants pay immigration fees
For episode 71, we have Sergio Torres, Co-Founder & CEO at Alvva, a FinTech startup helping immigrants pay for their immigration applications! Whatās really interesting about Alvva is that it enables immigrants to pay for their immigration applications while also helping them build their credit at the same time, which is important because traditional financing options are often unavailable to immigrants. As for Sergio, he was born and grew up in San Diego, and spend his life going back and forth across the US / Mexico border. His father was born in the US, and his mother was born in Mexico, so he experienced many of the challenges immigrants face when moving to and settling in a new country. After a long career in the financial services industry, he married his professional experience with his personal family immigration experience to launch Alvva. So, hereās what Sergio and I are going to be talking about:
- Sergioās personal immigration story from Mexico to the US
- How Sergio got into financial services and what he learned over 15 years in the industry
- How the idea for Alvva came about, and Sergioās first steps
- How Alvva works, where the company is today and where itās going
- Sergioās thoughts on how technology can help immigrants

Davide Lionetti, Co-founder, Visafy: Italian immigration & visa technology
We are heading to Italy for episode 70 to chat with Davide Lionetti, co-founder of Visafy! What I really love about Davideās story, and indeed the story of Visafy, is that itās a family business. Visafy is co-founded by Davide and his father Angelo Lionetti, and itās the tech-savvy version of a business that Davideās father, Angelo, has been running for years, helping individuals coming to Italy with consular interviews and visa applications. The reality is that immigration differs from country to country, and in my view, the best immigration tech solutions will come from those who have experience doing the process manually ON THE GROUND in that country. As for Davide, he studied international business in Paris, New York and Germany, and worked in marketing and accounting before joining his father and co-founding Visafy. So, hereās what Davide and I will be discussing:
- Davideās early life and experience studying in multiple countries
- How his father got into the immigration industry before launching Visafy
- What led Davide and his father to launch a tech-enabled Italian visa service
- What Visafy does today and how it works today
- Davideās vision for Visafy going forward and thoughts on travel picking back up post-COVID

Danish Soomro, CEO, Visadb.io: access to global experts for global citizens
On episode 69 we have Danish Soomro, Founder and CEO of Visadb.io. - a platform that connects digital nomads and companies with visa and other experts around the world. Pulled directly from the companyās website, āVisadb.io makes immigration & cross-border business simple for global companies and citizens.ā Visadb.io offers online access to verified immigration, tax and company formation experts from over 100 countries. Before starting visadb.io, Danish already had an entrepreneurial streak - he built Digital Nomads Nation, an online community of over 148,000 digital nomads, and videoHIRE, which helped companies use video to recruit more workers. Prior to that, Danish was part of multiple entrepreneurship programs in Poland and Chile too. Danish is also an avid traveler and digital nomad himself, and has lived and worked all over the world. So, hereās what Danish and I will be discussing:
- Danishās back story and early life

Manpreet Dhami, Managing Director, Newland Chase: ImmiSMART - big firm tech
Weāre back with episode 68 of the GMI Rocket Show with Manpreet Dhami, Managing Director of Immigration Services at Newland Chase, who also oversees their immigration technology product, ImmiSMART. Manpreet started her career in the immigration space nearly two decades ago at a corporate immigration company called Emigra (which was actually acquired by CIBT in 2021). She then went on to work at a smaller relocation company called Packimpex for a few years and then global mobility giant BGRS before coming back to Newland Chase in 2021, in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. As one of the worldās largest immigration providers, Newland Chase, which is owned by parent company CIBT, has an in-house immigration tech solution that it provides to clients called ImmiSMART. While Newland Chase is not traditionally thought of an immigration tech company, its technology is worth exploring. So, hereās what Manpreet and I will be discussing:
- Manpreetās familyās immigration journey to the UK
- Manpreetās early days and why she got into immigration with Emigra
- Manpreetās journey back to Newland Chase, and the Emigra acquisition by CIBT
