Mikhail Arsentiev, Founder, Skylex: 24/7 immigration lawyer, CRM & text app

šŸŽ™ For Episode 90 of the GMI Rocket show, we’re talking to a fellow immigration lawyer-turned-tech entrepreneur (though he still practices law!), Mikhail Arsentiev, founder of Skylex!

Skylex is a mobile and web app that helps immediately connect individuals with immigration lawyers 24/7.

It started as a specialized chat platform (with a WhatsApp feel to it) for Mikhail and his immigration law firm, but he realized it was something others could use as well.

Since launching, Skylex has expanded to become a kind of CRM, consult booking platform and, most recently, with a coworking space offering, all with the goal of making it easy for clients to reach an immigration lawyer while also helping immigration lawyers grow their firms.

Mikhail himself is from Russia, and attended George Washington University Law School, and has been practicing immigration law for over a decade, based in Brooklyn, NY today.

So, here’s what Mikhail and I are going to be talking about:

  • Mikhail’s early life back home and his immigration journey to the US
  • What drew Mikhail to law school in the US, and his experience practicing immigration law
  • How the idea to build an app to serve his clients came to him, and what Mikhail did first
  • How Skylex works, what it does today, and who it serves
  • Mikhail’s thoughts on the future of immigration tech and his product

And more!

So please join us, ask questions and leave comments!

Atal Agarwal, Founder, Immigrant First: Green card applications using AI

Atal Agarwal, Founder, Immigrant First: Green card applications using AI

šŸŽ™ On episode 89 of the GMI Rocket show, I’m speaking with an immigration tech founder who was let go while on an H-1B visa and launched a startup in response to help others avoid that same fate, Atal Agarwal, Founder of Immigrant First.

Originally from India where he received an engineering degree from one of the prestigious IIT schools, Atal came to the US and was on a J-1 visa, F-1 visa and eventually an H-1B visa, worked as a software engineer, and even got a master’s at UC Santa Barbara.

His career was going swimmingly until, in 2022, he found himself part of a layoff - his H-1B-sponsored job was no longer, and he now had 60 days to either find a new job or leave the US.

Over the next 2 months, Atal published a day-by-day account of his layoff which went viral, completed an Ironman race, and found a company that heard his plea and offered him a job.

But while he was seemingly spared, Atal felt he suffered an injustice. And, as he started using ChatGPT to draft his own green card application, Immigrant First was born.

So, here’s what Atal and I are going to be talking about:

  • Atal’s early life in India, studies at IIT and how he came to the US,
  • Atal’s first impression of the US immigration system and his H-1B career progression
  • How Atal suddenly got laid off, and what happened in that first 60 days
  • What inspired Atal to use AI for his own green card and how that became Immigrant First
  • What Immigrant First does today and Atal’s vision for the company and immigration tech

And more!

Marc Pavlopoulos, CEO, Syndesus: Canadian PEO for US tech startups & talent

Marc Pavlopoulos, CEO, Syndesus: Canadian PEO for US tech startups & talent

šŸŽ™ Episode 88 of the GMI Rocket show is a special one for me: I get to talk to and profile long-time colleague and friend Marc Pavlopoulos, CEO of Syndesus, about Canadian immigration and how US tech companies can benefit from it.

Marc, whose roots are from Greece but who was born in and grew up in the US, attended business school in Toronto, and worked in a number of startups, both in Toronto and Silicon Valley.

Over those many years in the startup world, Marc recognized that one of the biggest needs most startups had were tech workers.

At the same time, his experience getting a student visa and a work visa in Canada made him realize how much simpler Canadian immigration was (and is) than US immigration.

So in 2014, he left his last job and launched Syndesus, which now helps US companies hire foreign-born tech workers remotely in Canada (focused on those who lose the H-1B lottery), matches vetted, skilled tech workers with Canadian employers, and provides PEO services in Canada.

Here’s what Marc and I are going to be talking about:

  • Marc’s family’s immigration story and his early years growing up and in school
  • How Marc got into the startup world in 90s and what it was like before the Dot Com crash
  • Marc’s experience as a foreign student and worker in Canada
  • What inspired Marc to launch Syndesus and what the company did in the early days
  • What Syndesus does today and Marc’s view of the future or Canadian PEO + tech

And more!

šŸŽ™Generative AI is the way of the future, which is why, for episode 87 of the GMI Rocket show, I’m really excited to have a conversation with Antuan Vazquez, CEO and co-founder of DraftyAI! DraftyAI, which is a fairly young immigration tech startup, is focused on using generative AI to help immigration attorneys draft legal briefs, cover letters and other text-heavy documents in minutes. Co-founded alongside immigration attorney Nadine Navarro, who is a long-time personal friend of Antuan, DraftyAI is the kind of tool that actually saves immigration attorneys multiple hours per case by drafting lengthy documents in just minutes. Like many immigration tech founders, Antuan also has an immigration story - his family moved to the US from Cuba, which we’ll dive into - and a fascinating journey that started with studying bioengineering, working in biotech and then starting a consulting companies w So, here’s what Antuan and I are going to be talking about:

Evren comes from an entrepreneurial household, having watched his father start and grow a travel agency (which is what brought the family to Paris, France in the first place) among other businesses. And it seems that the entrepreneurial bug bit Evren too! Evren has been the owner of a general translation company, Link-Translations, for almost three decades. About 10 years ago, Evren turned that expertise into a tech solution, MotaWord.

So, here’s what Evren and I are going to be talking about:

John Lee, CEO, Work From Anywhere: Solving global tax compliance for ā€œWFAā€

On episode 84 of the GMI Rocket show, we’re exploring the world of remote work with a startup aptly named Work From Anywhere, and their co-founder and CEO, John Lee! As remote work becomes more common, and not just from home but from the Italian coast, the Austrian Alps or a wine bar in Portugal, one major issue always comes up: tax & compliance. That’s where Work From Anywhere comes in. They leverage a proprietary algorithm and a network of tax consultants to help companies implement the right remote work model, accounting for risks and considering multiple employment options including setting up an entity, using an employer of record, hiring contractors or using digital nomad visas. As for John, he studied accounting at University College Dublin and worked in various accounting positions in different countries for a decade until he started his first company, CultureMee, which helps global travelers navigate and learn other cultures. Eventually, he launched Work From Anywhere, tackling tax in the growing remote work landscape. So, here’s what John and I are going to be talking about:

As for Zain, he started his career as a corporate and litigation attorney, first at the international law firm of Bird & Bird and then in-house representing UK record labels and promoting UK music internationally. In 2018, Zain left his stable career as an attorney to launch what would eventually become Centuro Global, a platform enabling companies to expand internationally. After INSZoom, Ganesh held a few more tech jobs and eventually decided to go back to school - he enrolled in Sheridan College in Ontario, in a graduate project management program. Around this time, Ganesh also started a development company, which built a handful of products, including a legal tech product that he sold. Marc-Andre Ranger, Founder, ImmiSight: Paralegal-founded immigration tech

Marc-Andre Ranger, Founder, ImmiSight: Paralegal-founded immigration tech

On Episode 77 of the GMI Rocket show, we’re in Toronto speaking with veteran Canadian immigration paralegal and founder of tech-enabled ImmiSight, Marc-Andre Ranger! Marc, who is originally from Quebec, has been working as an immigration paralegal for two decades. One of the major advantages of being a paralegal is that he’s spent those past 20 years in the thick of each immigration file, which has given him a lot of insight into what works and what doesn’t. So as a natural entrepreneur, it got Marc thinking… ā€œhow can I integrate technology into the Canadian immigration process to automate some of it while still keeping it human-centered?ā€ Thus, ImmiSight was born. ImmiSight is a tech-enabled immigration service that helps prepare immigration files, mostly focused on work permits and LMIAs, with a combination of chatbots, document automation, and, where it makes sense, human work. So, here’s what Marc and I are going to be talking about:

  • Marc’s early days, growing up in Quebec
  • Marc’s paralegal and labor relations studies, and how that led to his first job
  • Marc’s experience working in immigration the past two decades
  • How the idea for ImmiSight was born, and how the company works today
  • Marc’s thoughts on the future of immigration tech in Canada,

As for Joon, the CEO and founder, he was actually a scientist in his prior life. He received a Bachelors in physics, a Masters in Nuclear Engineering and a PhD in Physics, and came to the US on a J-1 visa to work as a scientist, in California and then in New Jersey, before founding Lawfully. And Ryan is a true veteran of the moving industry, having spent two decades in moving and mobility, in some of the industry’s biggest companies, including Allied Moving Services and Sirva. But as it often happens, Ryan saw a need in the industry, particularly around pricing data, insights and transparency, that simply wasn’t being met. Thus, PricePoint was born. Junxian Lee, Co-Founder, Moovaz: Singapore-based relocation tech startup

We’re going all the way to Singapore for Episode 73 of the GMI Rocket show, and we’ll be learning about a growing relocation tech startup, Moovaz, with Co-Founder Junxian Lee. Junxian has an MBA from Fudan University, which is based in Shanghai, China, studied at both Harvard and UPenn, and worked in logistics, e-commerce and online fraud risk before starting Moovaz. Which means we’re going to have a lot to talk about 😊 So, here’s what Junxian and I are going to be talking about:

Vivi Himmel, CEO, AltoVita: Tech disrupting international corporate housing

On Episode 72 of the GMI Rocket show, we’re diving into a tech company tackling corporate housing, including for international employees, with Vivi Himmel, CEO & Co-Founder of AltoVita For employees who travel around the world for work, whether on short projects or years-long assignments, they often stay in corporate housing, whether temporarily while they find longer-term accommodations, or for their entire international assignment. And this is the process that AltoVita is looking to disrupt, by giving employees a variety of choices (rather than that ONE apartment building or hotel that the company puts employees up in) and by creating a platform that makes booking these accommodations safe, secure, easy and transparent. Vivi herself has lived all around the world, and during her time in investment banking, traveled internationally for work time and again. Along with her co-founder, Karolina Saviova, they’ve lived in over 20 cities. So AltoVita is solving a problem they both faced, personally. So, here’s what Vivi and I are going to be talking about:

  • Vivi’s early life, and how immigration was part of her family story
  • Vivi’s studies, early career in investment banking, and traveling for work
  • How the idea for AltoVita came about, how she met her co-founder and how they started

Sergio Torres, CEO, Alvva: FinTech helping immigrants pay immigration fees

For episode 71, we have Sergio Torres, Co-Founder & CEO at Alvva, a FinTech startup helping immigrants pay for their immigration applications! What’s really interesting about Alvva is that it enables immigrants to pay for their immigration applications while also helping them build their credit at the same time, which is important because traditional financing options are often unavailable to immigrants. As for Sergio, he was born and grew up in San Diego, and spend his life going back and forth across the US / Mexico border. His father was born in the US, and his mother was born in Mexico, so he experienced many of the challenges immigrants face when moving to and settling in a new country. After a long career in the financial services industry, he married his professional experience with his personal family immigration experience to launch Alvva. So, here’s what Sergio and I are going to be talking about:

  • Sergio’s personal immigration story from Mexico to the US
  • How Sergio got into financial services and what he learned over 15 years in the industry
  • How the idea for Alvva came about, and Sergio’s first steps
  • How Alvva works, where the company is today and where it’s going

Davide Lionetti, Co-founder, Visafy: Italian immigration & visa technology

Davide Lionetti, Co-founder, Visafy: Italian immigration & visa technology

We are heading to Italy for episode 70 to chat with Davide Lionetti, co-founder of Visafy! What I really love about Davide’s story, and indeed the story of Visafy, is that it’s a family business. Visafy is co-founded by Davide and his father Angelo Lionetti, and it’s the tech-savvy version of a business that Davide’s father, Angelo, has been running for years, helping individuals coming to Italy with consular interviews and visa applications. The reality is that immigration differs from country to country, and in my view, the best immigration tech solutions will come from those who have experience doing the process manually ON THE GROUND in that country. As for Davide, he studied international business in Paris, New York and Germany, and worked in marketing and accounting before joining his father and co-founding Visafy. So, here’s what Davide and I will be discussing:

  • Davide’s early life and experience studying in multiple countries
  • How his father got into the immigration industry before launching Visafy
  • What led Davide and his father to launch a tech-enabled Italian visa service
  • What Visafy does today and how it works today

Danish Soomro, CEO, Visadb.io: access to global experts for global citizens

On episode 69 we have Danish Soomro, Founder and CEO of Visadb.io. - a platform that connects digital nomads and companies with visa and other experts around the world. Pulled directly from the company’s website, ā€œVisadb.io makes immigration & cross-border business simple for global companies and citizens.ā€ Visadb.io offers online access to verified immigration, tax and company formation experts from over 100 countries. Before starting visadb.io, Danish already had an entrepreneurial streak - he built Digital Nomads Nation, an online community of over 148,000 digital nomads, and videoHIRE, which helped companies use video to recruit more workers. Prior to that, Danish was part of multiple entrepreneurship programs in Poland and Chile too. Danish is also an avid traveler and digital nomad himself, and has lived and worked all over the world. So, here’s what Danish and I will be discussing:

  • Danish’s back story and early life
  • How Danish’s early jobs took him from Nevada to the UK, to Canada and beyond
  • How Danish came up with the idea for Visadb.io, and getting into tech accelerators

Manpreet Dhami, Managing Director, Newland Chase: ImmiSMART - big firm tech

We’re back with episode 68 of the GMI Rocket Show with Manpreet Dhami, Managing Director of Immigration Services at Newland Chase, who also oversees their immigration technology product, ImmiSMART. Manpreet started her career in the immigration space nearly two decades ago at a corporate immigration company called Emigra (which was actually acquired by CIBT in 2021). She then went on to work at a smaller relocation company called Packimpex for a few years and then global mobility giant BGRS before coming back to Newland Chase in 2021, in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. As one of the world’s largest immigration providers, Newland Chase, which is owned by parent company CIBT, has an in-house immigration tech solution that it provides to clients called ImmiSMART. While Newland Chase is not traditionally thought of an immigration tech company, its technology is worth exploring. So, here’s what Manpreet and I will be discussing:

  • Manpreet’s family’s immigration journey to the UK
  • Manpreet’s early days and why she got into immigration with Emigra
  • Manpreet’s journey back to Newland Chase, and the Emigra acquisition by CIBT
