S5 E7: Greg Pattillo, Beatbox Flutist
On today's episode, Scott interviews Greg Pattillo, an American flutist, recognized worldwide for his signature beatbox flute sound. Since 2007, his solo videos have reached over 100 million views, featuring his arrangements, that span the gamut of musical styles, from Nintendo’s Super Mario Brothers to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Greg has been featured on TV shows that include Jay Leno and iCarly, and his music was also featured in the 2017 Lego Ninjago movie, as the beatbox flute music of Master Wu. As a published author of his beatbox flute method books, Mr. Pattillo has taught masterclasses on beatbox flute and improvisation, at numerous higher education institutions, that include The Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and Berklee College of Music. In addition to his solo career, Greg is a founding member of the touring musical ensemble, The Project Trio, that has over 100,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel. On today's episode, Scott interviews Tori Elliott, an American singer/songwriter/producer, and founder of her North Carolina indie pop band, Victoria Victoria. Tori’s songwriting style has been compared to the likes of Regina Spektor and Carole King, and a number of her songs have been featured on reality tv shows and film. In addition to her own works, Tori has released a number of recordings with her writing partner, the legendary guitarist/producer, Charlie Hunter, including a new collaborative album, to drop in May 2024. Jazz and Beyond Intel said that Tori has a creative vision as a tunesmith, and Rolling Stone Magazine said her band, Victoria Victoria, is a rising act. On today's episode, Scott interviews Steve Jankowski, a touring and freelance trumpet player in the New York City area, currently on tour with Nile Rodgers and Chic. He is one of only three trumpet players to tour with the legendary horn band Chicago, and was a member of Blood, Sweat and Tears for eight years, plus served as their Musical Director during his last six years. Other artists Steve has performed and/or recorded with include KC and the Sunshine Band, Bon Jovi, The Rolling Stones, Donna Summer and Daryl Hall, just to name a few. On today's episode, Scott interviews Ron Wilson, the drummer and musical director for the American pop singer/songwriter, Lou Christie. He has graced the stage with iconic artists such as Darlene Love, Gary U.S. Bonds, Gloria Gaynor, Leslie Gore, Dave Valentin, and Bill Charlap, just to name a few. Ron holds a Master of Music degree from William Paterson University in New Jersey, and a Bachelors degree in Percussion Performance from the State University of New York at Purchase. When not performing live, he keeps busy with recording sessions, teaching and composing. Ron is a published composer who has scored movie soundtracks, composed works for chamber ensemble, concert band, jazz ensembles as well as commercial music. On today's episode, Scott interviews The Cello Doll, a cellist, composer, teacher, and musically gothic storyteller. She has received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in cello performance, and plays both acoustic and electric cellos. The Cello Doll has been making a name for herself on social media as a classical trained crossover artist since 2018, with followers of over 500k. Her rendition of the Rolling Stones song, “Paint It Black”, as featured in the Netflix original, “Wednesday”, has become a Halloween favorite. Through original arrangements, mash-ups, and compositions, she presents the cello in unique music videos that fuse genres and translate classical music for modern audiences. As a performer, The Cello Doll has collaborated with artists that include violinist/dancer, Lindsey Stirling and the Las Vegas female string ensembles, “Femmes of Rock” and “Bella Electric Strings”, just to name a few. On today's episode, Scott interviews Walfredo Reyes Jr., a globally sought after percussionist and drummer, who has successfully combined the rich history of Latin, Afro-Cuban and World Percussion with the drum set, and can play in a myriad of musical genres. He has performed and/or recorded with the “who’s who” of the music industry including Carlos Santana, Traffic, Steve Winwood, Lindsey Buckingham, and Robbie Robertson, just to name a few. In 2012, Walfredo was invited to take over the role of percussionist with the iconic rock band Chicago, and then in 2018 was asked by the founding members to take over as drummer. In addition to maintaining a busy touring and recording schedule, he finds time to conduct music clinics and teach all levels of students who seek out his help. S5 E1: Chris Ruggiero, Vocalist
On today's episode, Scott interviews Chris Ruggiero, a vocalist that has been described as an “old soul”, at only 24 years old. Chris came to national attention when he performed on one of PBS-TV’s coast-to-coast broadcast specials, and since then has toured the country, breathing new life into the songs of the 60s and 70s, by stripping them down and re-imagining them in his own style. He has headlined in Las Vegas eleven times, released four albums in 2021, featuring masterful arrangements by Charles Calello and his Facebook page reached over 60 million people last year. In 2022, Chris released a Christmas album, that also features a duet with Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer, Darlene Love, thus landing their live performance on the TV show, Good Morning America and others. On today's episode, Scott interviews Stu Dias, the lead vocalist and guitarist from Soggy Po’ Boys, a New Hampshire band that specializes in New Orleans jazz. Native to New England, Soggy Po’ Boys has quickly become an institution, spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond, playing at various venues that include concert halls, street corners, music festivals, bars and libraries. This seven piece group formed on Fat Tuesday in 2012 at a local club gig, and just celebrated their eleventh anniversary. In addition to their four albums and one EP, Soggy Po’ Boys has quite a fan base, a busy touring schedule, plus a weekly residency every Tuesday night at the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. On today's episode, Scott interviews Glenn Van Looy, one of the leading euphonium players of the twenty first century. He began playing the euphonium at eleven years old, in a local wind band conducted by his Father. Shortly after that, this prodigy was recruited to play with the championship “Festival Brass Band”, and “Brass Band Heist”, followed by joining one of the top bands in Europe, “Brass Band Buizingen”. Glenn has won solo championships of his native Belgium in every category, the European Solo Championships in Austria, and was the youngest winner of the British Open Solo Championship, just to name a few. In addition to juggling a busy touring and teaching schedule, he is also an artist endorser for AR Resonance Mouthpieces, who created a signature euphonium mouthpiece in his name. The Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra presents programs that highlight the music of the late 1800s and early 1900s, by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and the King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin. Their silent film programs feature the biggest names of the day, such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Laurel & Hardy, just to name a few. On today's episode, Scott interviews Daniela Mars, a multi-flautist from Paris, France. Born in Japan, she was raised as a child in South Korea, Brazil and England, and speaks five different languages. At seven years old, she began to play classical flute, and continued throughout her college years at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England, where she mastered her art. Recognized in France as a chamber musician and soloist, Daniela also enjoys playing in a variety of other genres as well. As a multi-flautist, she plays all the various size flutes, ranging from piccolo down to the contrabass flute. In addition, Daniela is a Trevor James bass flute artist, and an advocate for increasing commissioned works for the bass flute by living composers. In 2022, she released her visual album, “Intrinsic”, combining her passion for beautiful melodies, extended flute techniques and breathtaking nature scenes that were filmed at a national park in Brazil. This multi-flautist, certainly GOT CHOPS!

On today's episode, Scott interviews Dr. David Wright, a multi-saxophonist and music educator from Rockwall, Texas. Dr. Wright holds three University degrees in both music education and saxophone performance. In the field of classical music, he was the principal saxophonist with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and is a current member of the Dallas Winds and the Texas Saxophone Quartet. He also plays in jazz and contemporary music styles, with mastery and ease, and has performed with artists that include the Temptations and the Four Tops. As of this interview, Dr. Wright has posted one hundred seventy five YouTube videos of himself playing all or some of the saxophone parts, arranged for various saxophone ensembles, on a wide range of genres. On today's episode, Scott interviews Paul Hanson, a world renowned bassoonist, who plays in the genres of classical, jazz and contemporary styles with equal proficiency, and is the pioneer of the electric bassoon. Paul has recorded and/or performed with drummer, Billy Cobham, banjo player, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, saxophonist, Jeff Coffin, and singer/songwriter, Jon Batiste, just to name a few. In addition, he also plays various saxophones and has recorded and/or performed with chart topping artists that include Boz Scaggs, The Temptations, Tower of Power, and was the featured tenor sax soloist on Eddie Money’s 1986 rock hit, “Take Me Home Tonight”. In 2008, Paul was invited to create his own role as the electric improvising bassoonist in Cirque Du Soleil’s ZED, a resident show at the Tokyo Disney Resort, that ran from 2008-2011. Besides performing, my guest artist has been a dedicated bassoon and saxophone teacher for the past forty years. S2 E3: Ed Alstrom, Organist/Singer
On today's episode, Scott interviews his friend, Ed Alstrom, a multi-talented musician, who holds a B.M. degree in Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College, where he studied classical music during the day, while playing jazz, pop and rock gigs at night. A highly sought after organist in the tri-state area, he can play seamlessly in all styles of music, in addition to singing, and playing keyboards. He has performed with artists that include Bette Midler, Chuck Berry, Leonard Bernstein, Blood, Sweat and Tears, various NY Broadway Pit Orchestras, and was a member of the pit band for the Uncle Floyd Show, a NJ/NY tv show that featured sketch comedy and live music. Ed was also a Product/Marketing Manager at Casio Inc., composing/arranging demo songs for their keyboards, while demonstrating products live on stage with legendary musicians Stanley Jordan, Herbie Hancock and Donald Fagen. In the field of religious music, he divides his time between being a church director/organist and Temple accompanist/choir director in NJ. In 2004, Ed fulfilled his childhood dream when he became the weekend organist at Yankee Stadium, and is still entertaining baseball fans in that role with his organ music. This organist, singer, and keyboardist, certainly GOT CHOPS!

On today's episode, Scott interviews a musician that he’s never met or performed with, Rob Paparozzi, an American Grammy-nominated harmonicist and singer from NJ. Rob is widely recognized as a former member of the original Blues Brothers Band and the reformed Jazz-Rock group, Blood, Sweat & Tears. His credits include opening several times for Bruce Springsteen in the 1970s, touring with country artists Dolly Parton and George Jones, and has contributed to works by artists that include Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Judy Collins and James Galway. In addition, my guest has also played on the NY Broadway shows “Big River” and “The Will Rogers Follies”, performed a duet with Bernadette Peters, and was as a guest soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. This harmonicist, singer and “Soul Man”, absolutely GOT CHOPS!

On today's episode, Scott interviews a renowned songwriter/singer, Larry Weiss, who penned such classic hits that include, Glen Campbell’s hit “Rhinestone Cowboy” (1976 CMA Country Song of the Year), “Bend Me, Shape Me” (1968 International Song), recorded by The American Breed, and “Hi Ho Silver Lining”, recorded by English rock guitarist, Jeff Beck in 1967. He is also recognized for his vocal on “Brand New Life” the theme song, on TV’s “Who’s The Boss.” He has numerous gold and platinum album credits as a writer for artists that include Nat King Cole, Eric Burton & The Animals, Barry Manilow, Michael Jackson, Spooky Tooth, Maureen McGovern and Dionne Warwick, just to name a few. On today's episode, Scott interviews his friend, Wayne Tarnowski. As a former senior recording engineer at CBS Records in NYC, and chief recording engineer at Caribou Ranch in Colorado, his engineering talents have graced albums by Chicago, Elton John, Weather Report, Billy Joel, The Beach Boys, Earth, Wind and Fire, REO Speedwagon, and Edgar Winter. In addition, he collaborated with legendary music producers, James William Guercio and Phil Ramone. Later, after his recording engineer career came to a close, Wayne chose to follow in his Dad’s footsteps as a master instrument technician, specializing in woodwind repairs, including the restoration of vintage brass and woodwind instruments. Scott is super grateful that three generations of the Tarnowski's have worked on his woodwind instruments for the past forty years. This multi-talented musician, recording engineer and instrument technician GOT CHOPS!

His recording credits include playing behind musical artists that include Gladys Knight & The Pips, Tommy James, The 5th Dimension and Freda Payne, just to name a few. As an arranger, he has penned over 200 published works and has been commissioned to write pieces in many different styles. In addition, you'll hear about John's latest studio album that he produced, arranged and was featured on, entitled, "1, 2, You Know What To Do!", by the Hotel Excelsior Orchestra, playing popular music of the 1920s.
