This is How You Do It—Midweek—Josiah Kagin
Paul communicated an important message to the church at Colossi. He addressed them as saints and faithful brethren. They were believers. They were saved. They were disciples of Christ. They were Christians. They were like us. Much of the content of the Epistle to the Colossians was focused on how they could live the Christian life so that Christ would be promoted and pleased. In a sense, Paul was saying to them “This is how you promote and please Jesus.”

Church Family Worship—1 Thessalonians—Josiah Kagin
Paul deeply cared about the new believers in Thessalonica. Timothy had reported on how vibrancy of their faith and the difficulty of their persecution. His first epistle was focused on giving them perspective as a persecuted church. Certainly all had much perspective to give. To close the letter, he encourages them to be persistent in their worship. Paul helps them and us to see that persecution should not be allowed to weaken our worship, but deepen it.
Worship is ascribing worth to God.
It is orienting our lives around God.

On the Battlefront—Midweek—Josiah Kagin
Wars and rumors of wars are presently all around us. Many are watching with a grimace the tensions that are escalating in the Middle East and even around our country with the protests that we have seen. Tonight, we will not focus on those battles, but the battlefront on which we all find ourselves. May the instructions from God's Word help us to know what to do on the battlefront.

Church Family Relationships—1 Thessalonians—Josiah Kagin
The church family in Thessalonica was vibrant and full of faith. They had spread the message of the Gospel far and wide and because of it had experienced persecution. To help fortify them, Paul wrote a letter to give them divine perspective about their new lives in Christ as well as what was to be expected at the rapture and with the Day of the Lord. He concludes by helping them with their view of spiritual leadership in the church, their relationships with one another in the church and their worship. Tonight we want to focus on the matter of church family relationships.

A Strengthening Hope—Hope—In God—Josiah Kagin
David often faced seasons of affliction from his enemies. In these times he was very aware of his desperate need of God’s deliverance. What is amazing about many of the Psalms, including this one, is that before he was delivered, David began to rejoice in His God. He also encouraged others saints to look away from their affliction and to God and rejoice. Where did he gather the strength to do that? Today, we will learn how David’s hope in God brought about a divine strength to accomplish God’s will. This strength is abundantly available to us as well.

Spiritual Leadership—1 Thessalonians—Josiah Kagin
The church is a family of believers. Sixty-six times in Paul’s Epistles, he uses the familial term, brethren. To this family, God has provided instructions concerning leadership, relationships and worship. Let’s discover what God has to say about spiritual leadership in Christ’s church.

Hope in Our Mission—Hope in God—Josiah Kagin
The Apostles were sent ones who had witnessed Christ’s ministry from His baptism through His ascension back to heaven. It seems that Paul witnessed the life and ministry of Christ as a young unbeliever, but was especially moved by the martyring of Stephen (Acts 7:58) Paul, whose name was still Saul at that time, rejected Christ and persecuted His church until He saw the resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus. It is fascinating to read His perspective of the ministry Christ gave to Him and the persecutions He endured with great hope. During the forty days after Christ’s resurrection, every individual who was privileged to see our resurrected Lord, a mission was given—go and tell. In our American mindset, we often imagine this as a glitzy, glamorous opportunity, but must remember that Jesus informed His disciples that we would not be treated different than they treated Him. (John 15:20) The Apostles’ lives illustrated this reality! Yet they embraced the commission Christ gave with hope in God. May we do the same!
The Appearances of the Resurrected Savior—Midweek—Josiah Kagin
Let’s be equipped to communicate the significance of the resurrection with those that we know. This past Sunday, we learned that the resurrections means that we can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that He has a purpose for our lives — to go and tell others. We also learned that as believers we are risen with Him. Because of this we should seek those things which are above as well as set our affections those things. We should lean into the eternal things. Tonight, let’s briefly overview of the appearance of the risen Christ.
Seek and Set — Josiah Kagin
When we place faith in Jesus Christ for the gift of salvation, we identify with Him in His death, burial and resurrection. Because we are risen with Him, we have a new outlook and goal in life. Paul challenges the Colossian believer to accept these new goals. May we do the same!

Hope in Christ's Resurrection—Hope in God—Josiah Kagin
Mary Magdalene was a woman who had experienced the radical difference that Jesus could make in a life. She had been in the grip of seven devils and Christ set her free. She followed Jesus faithfully and served Him with all her heart. Yet when He died on the cross, her hopes were dashed like the rest of His followers. Let’s consider the the details of Mary’s visit to the Garden Tomb on the day Christ rose from the dead and let’s see how Christ’s resurrection gave her hope.
They Loved Christ in His Sacrifice—Midweek—Josiah Kagin
When Jesus was put on trial by the religious elites in Jerusalem before the Roman government, many of His followers began to fear for their lives. Peter denied Christ while warming his hands by the fire outside of the judgement hall. The disciples scattered and hid. If we are honest, we probably would have done the same. However, there were some individuals that are recorded in the narratives who stood near and demonstrated a deep love for Christ in this most difficult hour. Their testimony still exhorts us today to love Christ and stand for Him.

The Day of the Lord—1 Thessalonians — Josiah Kagin
We are awaiting the soon coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Maranatha! Even so come Lord Jesus! We should be aware of the events that will follow the rapture so that we can live for Jesus with hope and engage the world with the message of Christ. We do not have to be uncertain, but we can be confident because the Word of God give us understanding.

Hope in Christ's Sacrifice — Hope in God — Josiah Kagin
Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate Jesus formally presenting Himself in Jerusalem as the Messiah. While they wanted and expected a conquering King, He came to be a suffering Servant. While it began with a rejoicing crowd, it ended with a rejecting crowd and His crucifixion. Jesus had specifically explained to His disciples all that would happen when He presented Himself in Jerusalem including how He would die and rise again the third day. On this Palm Sunday, let’s consider the fact that without the sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sins, we would have no hope.

New Life in Christ is Changing Everything—Josiah Kagin
The day you received Jesus Christ, all things became new with you. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) If that happened twenty years ago or if it was last week, it is still true. However, we have to be reminded often of this newness so we can act accordingly. Paul wrote to the Ephesian believers to help them to understand the beauty of their eternal salvation in Jesus Christ. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9) He then urged them to walk in a way that would compliment their new life in Christ. “In brief, God says in Ephesian chapters 1–3, ‘I have made you a saint.’ In chapters 4–6, He says, ‘Now, live a saintly life.’” (Wuest) This same exhortation is needed in our lives today.
1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

Forever With Our Lord — 1 Thessalonians — Josiah Kagin
Paul was concerned that the Thessalonians were living in unnecessary hopelessness concerning loved ones who had died. God led him to write a precious set of verses that has graced Christian funerals and encouraged mourning hearts since the first century. Tonight we rejoice in these words and accept them as the very word of God.

Hope in Forgiveness—Hope in God—Josiah Kagin
The moment we trusted Christ for the forgiveness of our sin and eternal life, we were totally, eternally forgiven. The penalty for our past, present and future sins was completely paid for at the cross of Calvary. It is impossible to add to the payment Christ already made on our behalf. Our position before God is as righteous as Jesus Christ Himself. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) Through Christ, we were born into the family of God and became one of His beloved children. This is the believer’s positional reality, yet practically we still struggle with our sinful flesh in this life. When we sin, there is no need to receive salvation again, but to simply admit our sin and ask our heavenly Father for forgiveness. He is always faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and fellowship with us.

Increasing in Love—1 Thessalonians—Josiah Kagin
Last time we learned that as believers sexual impurity is to be avoided and we are to abound in holiness. Coupled with that truth is the concept of brotherly love. Let’s consider how the Thessalonians were doing really well in this area and were encouraged to continue.

Hope for the Hurting—Hope in God—Josiah Kagin
Do you like suffering? I am sure you would say no! Most of us really struggle when we are facing the worst of life. It is difficult! Today, we want to consider the subject of finding hope in the midst of our hurt. That hurt may be self-inflicted but often times it is inflicted on us because of the words, attitudes and actions of others. We may wonder why God allows such things to happen to us. In our passage of Scripture, we will learn some of what God is doing in our lives when we are dealing with hurt and suffering.

Abound in Holiness — 1 Thessalonians — Josiah Kagin
Paul wrote to the new believers in Thessalonica to commend their vibrant faith in the midst of persecution. He reminded them of how tenderly they (Paul, Silas and Timothy) had nurtured them in the truth and how their lives were radically transformed by the power of the Word of God. He encouraged them to be established/ground in their faith until the day they would stand before the Lord Jesus Christ. In order for them to be established in their faith in the pagan, sensualize culture that surrounded them, Paul had to challenge them in the matter of holiness and purity.

Hope in Lamentation — Hope in God — Josiah Kagin
We live in a culture where anything that makes you sad or unhappy is considered a bad thing. Our culture reacts when God’s truth confronts their sin. When facing the consequences of that sin, our culture blames God and others for their situation. Sadly, sometimes we do as well. This certainly was the case in Jeremiah’s day. Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, penned the poetic words of this book as an expression of sorrow in the midst of the Babylonian captivity. Israel had been rebellious against God and so God allowed them to be conquered and taken captive. These consequences for their sin brought sorrow. A sense of despair and hopelessness overwhelmed their souls. That would be expected! Yet, in the middle of this book of lamentations, Jeremiah expresses beautiful hope in God. Considering this passage will help us find meaning, hope and practical steps forward when facing the chastening of God.

It Took Control — Midweek — Josiah Kagin
There is a lot of rage and anger in our world today. In 2023, 92% of Americans reported that they had witnessed an incident of road rage. Displays of anger in protests, hate crimes, at the sporting events and in the work place seem almost common place. As a society we are on edge! It is easy to see the anger and its consequences in others, but what about our lives? Let’s pause to consider an incident in the life of Moses who allowed his anger to control his reaction and faced very difficult long-term consequences. Let’s seek the help of the Holy Spirit to put off sinful anger and put on characteristics of Christ.

Biblical Principles and Gambling — Midweek — Josiah Kagin
Gambling is a growing problem in our country. Recently, a record number of people gambled on the Super Bowl. According to the American Gaming Association, 67.8 million people gambled $23.1 billion on the game’s outcome. That’s 44% higher than the previous record of $16 billion placed by 50.4 million people set in 2023. 26% of Americans wagered money on the game making for a 35% increase in the number of U.S. gamblers. With the growth of gambling in our culture, we should pause and consider what God’s Word has to say about it. While you will not find a Bible verse that says “Thou shalt not gamble,” we can study Biblical principles that give us clear divine guidance.
GAMBLING takes place when something of material value, typically money, is risked with the possibility of winning more on an event with an uncertain outcome. Whether betting on a sporting event, playing a card game such as poker, buying a lottery ticket, or spinning a roulette wheel, one thing is certain: when it comes to gambling, the outcome is at least partly decided by chance. —Clinton and Scalise

Hope within God's Economy — Hope in God — Josiah Kagin
The economies of this world are very uncertain. We observe their fluctuation day by day. Presently, there is much conversation centered around the weakening of the American dollar and how that will impact the rest of the world. Our national debt continues to climb and threatens our stability. Individually, Americans face uncertainty brought about cost increase of groceries, houses, cars and goods used in daily life. All this is coupled with the ever present discontent among consumers. It seems a life of anxiety and worry mixed is almost unavoidable for the average American. But is this what God desires for followers of Jesus Christ? Let’s consider what Jesus taught his disciples concerning covetousness, worry-free living and seeking first the Kingdom
of God.

Getting Jesus — Midweek — Josiah Kagin
The idiomatic expression "get you" is a heartfelt acknowledgment that someone understands or relates deeply to another person's feelings or perspectives. Over the last couple of years, a large religious ad campaign has been running entitled “He Gets Us” on TV, social media, books and more. It gained a lot of attention and criticism with its recent showings at the Super bowl. The ad featured foot washing between various people representing differing societal groups and emphasized the need to humbly love your neighbor like Jesus did to matter the differences. It promoted Jesus as one Who gets you no matter who you are or what you do. It concluded with this line,“Jesus didn’t teach hate. He washed feet. He gets us. All of us.” It called for people to follow the example of Jesus and love their neighbors. While there are some points of truth in the campaign, it also creates some confusion as to Who Jesus really is and why He came.

Hope for Cleansing — Hope in God — Josiah Kagin
How is your relationship with God today? Is it close? Is it distant? David knew what it was to be both close to God and distant from Him. He had a personal relationship with Him, but there were times that he strayed and yielded to temptation. He asked a question that is relevant to all believers. How can one be cleansed from sin? The answer is simple and life changing.

Hope in God (Part 2) — Josiah Kagin
Last week we learned that hopelessness is a reality for a growing number of Americans and sadly for believers as well. We also discovered that God’s people in the Bible were not exempt from hopelessness. This is certainly the case for David, who is believed to be the penman of Psalm 42 and 43. These two Psalms are linked together with a common message—Hope in God. The noise of uncertainty, the endless clamor of enemies and pestilent murmur of worry had overwhelmed David’s soul. However, because he had a personal relationship with his God, his persistent refrain was, “Hope in God.” This same refrain should be ours’ as well. Let’s continue to learn how we can choose to hope in our God!

Hope in God (Part 1) — Josiah Kagin
Some say that hopelessness is a public health crisis in the United Sates. It is striking to think that the wealthiest nation on earth seems to be bankrupt of hope. God’s people are not exempt from this reality today nor in the times in which the Bible was written. David is believed to be the penman of Psalm 42 and 43.

Consider How Jesus Prayed—Growth Point—Josiah Kagin
Prayer was a notable part of Christ’s ministry while on earth. His disciples were so moved by how He prayed, they asked Him, Lord, teach us to pray.” Likely the most touching prayer we have recorded was penned by John. Some call it Christ’s High Priestly prayer. It is a prayer of intercession for His disciples both then and now. Tonight we will consider a few highlights from this prayer so that we might be strengthened in our own prayer lives.

Good Success—Josiah Kagin
The book of Joshua opens up with a transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua. Taking the leadership of the children of Israel was not a small undertaking. It would be quite challenging! Not only would He need to gain their trust, but He was to lead them into a period of exhausting conquest. Multiple times God instructed Joshua to be strong and courageous. He provided Joshua with means by which to experience good success in his God-given commission. The same is very applicable to us as we enter a new year.

Stedfast Till Christ Returns—1 Thessalonians—Josiah Kagin
Paul was comforted by the report that Timothy brought back from Thessalonica. The believers were steadfast in the faith despite the afflictions they were facing. Paul still desired to help they so that they would remain steadfast in faith before God until the return of Jesus Christ.

Christ Our Hope—Josiah Kagin
“There is no hope for me. God cannot forgive me for the things I have done!” I heard these words while sitting across the table from a middle age man in July of 2016. My heart broke to hear him say and believe such statements. I passionately assured him that God did love him very much and that Jesus came to take his punishment for all of his sin and deliver him. Sadly, this man ended up taking his own life and I will never forget his hopelessness. He is not alone in his hopelessness. Suicide rates have reached highest point in more than 80 years according to USA Today. Is there an answer to the hopelessness of mankind? The Bible tells us that there is and His name is Jesus. He came to earth as a servant not only to give us hope, but to be our hope.

He Did as He was Bidden—Servants of Christmas—Josiah Kagin
Can you imagine the level of confusion, hurt and even betrayal that must of welled up in the heart and mind of Joseph when he found out that Mary was pregnant? He loved her! His whole life was changing! What was he to do with Mary? Should he proceed with marriage? Should he divorce her according to the Jewish law? As Joseph wrestled with what to do, the Angel of the Lord appeared and help him to understand all that was happening in Mary and their lives. He gave clear instruction for Joseph to follow and Joseph’s servant-like response is summed up for our example in the words he “…did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him…”
