#85 Organic wine adventures with Deep Down Wines

In 2019, Peter and Clive launched Deep Down Wines, a boutique producer of organic wines. They'd met a year earlier and discovered a shared passion for organic and sustainable wine production as well as transparency. Through Deep Down Wines, they aim to push boundaries in wine-making and showcase diversity in Marlborough wines. In this episode of the B Better podcast, Tim chats to Peter and Clive about their desire to stretch the ideas of what wine from the Marlborough region of New Zealand looks like, the importance of transparency in the world of food and beverage and particularly the wine industry, their discovery of B Corp, their journey to B Corp certification and what they hoped to get out of being a B Corp in the future.

Listen in as Peter and Clive discuss:

    • Why they believe there needs to be an evolution in farming towards organic as well as removal of all the additives.
    • How the Marlborough wine region now has too much monoculture and commercial farming, which means too much glyphosate and other herbicides and pesticides.
    • Why Marlborough's obsession with sauvignon blanc could backfire on the region.
    • How being organic was non-negotiable for their winery.
    • The public misconception that all wine is organic.
    • The problematic lack of transparency in the industry that means few people realise many wines have up to 25 additives.

And more! Check it out! Be entertained, educated, outraged, and inspired.

#75 Making big money from salon waste with Paul Frasca of Sustainable Salons

If you're a salon owner who values sustainability and wants to have a positive impact on the world, check out Sustainable Salons. They take waste from salons and recycle it into products their salon members can then sell - like sunglasses.

Started by this episode's guest, Paul Frasca, Sustainable Salons works with hairdressers, barbers, dermal clinics, and dog groomers.

Why? Because from salon foils, papers, and plastics, to leftover colour, and even the hair clippings on your salon floor… it can all be diverted from landfills and be transformed into a force for good!

    Listen up to find out...

    • How they recycle human hair and dog fur
    • Why Paul calls himself an 'above ground miner' of the incredible fortune that's sitting in waste
    • How they made 60,000 pairs of sunglasses from used shampoo bottles
    • The 12 product lines they make from recycled salon materials, including dog leashes, coasters, and combs
    • Their social programmes like Haircuts for the Homeless
    • Half of their staff have a disability
    • Why Paul is passionate about making as much money as possible 'every company should be trying to be Tesla'
    • In 2023, they drove $15 million worth of new business to their sustainable salons - having spent zero on marketing
    • How circular is the future of business

#72 How non-profits can maximise profitability and impact with Laszlo Csite of 360tuned

Through digital transformation, 360tuned founder Laszlo Csite ensures purpose-drivenT enterprises are as effective and efficient as for-profit corporates. In other words, he wants to help non-profits ‘do good, well’ by maximising efficiencies and positive impact.

Where did it start? After nine years of consulting for big corporates in banking, oil and gas, insurance and dairy, founder Laszlo Csite wanted to work with like-minded people who were interested in long-term purpose instead of short-term profit at any cost.

In 2021, he started his own coaching and consulting digital transformation company to work exclusively with social enterprises, non-profit organisations, and B Corps. No more big corporates! He hasn’t looked back, and the team has expanded into throughout NZ and into Australia.

The first client was TupuToa. In two months, Laszlo created a digital transformation roadmap with much more automation, replacing systems, shutting down services and subscriptions, eliminating costs and streamlining processes. He taught the team how to properly use Salesforce and 18 months later, all 24 employees were effectively using the platform, massively streamlining operations and removing inefficiencies that were wasting a lot of money. Before this, said Laszlo, ‘it was like they owned a Porsche but no one could drive it so they still rode a bicycle…

Take a listen to this episode to find out:

    • Why copy/pasting has no place in a thriving business
    • The top three things that non-profits are doing badly
    • Where ikigai fits into the modern workplace
    • How being a B Corp opens doors
    • Why an excellent business is like a pizza
    • How every dollar spent with 360tuned reaps $2.78 for their clients
    • How the cost of digital transformation will be paid back many times over through boosted profitability
    • His goal to help create one million social enterprises in 10 years by the time he’s aged 60

Check it out! And get inspired.

#71 Marketing and branding as a B Corp with Elena Keith of Seven

As a little girl struggling with deafness, Elena Keith wanted to be a farmer's wife. Things didn't work out that way though and today she runs branding agency Seven, in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, alongside her husband Gideon, while raising their teenagers, Spike and Ivy.

In this episode of B Better, Tim and Elena get into an in-depth discussion about how the advertising sector is having to change because the world is changing. The conversation takes twists and turns, from the ghost chips ad to Aristotle’s writings on purpose and genius, how WWII changed the role of women, how Seven survived lockdown as a business, and so much more, including:

    • Who taught Elena that ‘your values don’t mean anything till they cost you something’
    • Why she's trying to get helicopters banned from residential areas
    • The best thing about running a branding agency
    • How brands are using B Corp to stand out from their competitors
    • Seven's motivation for looking at B Corp because staff wanted more meaningful work
    • Elena’s top tips on doing B Corp (it took them 3 years to certify)

#70 Raglan Food cofounder Latesha Randall is changing the world with coconut yogurt

Can you save the world with coconut yogurt? Founders of Raglan Food Co Tesh and Seb are giving it a solid go.

When her partner Seb decided it was time to go dairy-free due to allergies, Tesh started experimenting in her kitchen with making vegan coconut yoghurt.

Suffice to say, things took off from there. Word of mouth spread quickly and demand grew. First, they partnered with a local community kitchen but then built their own factory, determined to keep jobs in their small town despite challenges of scale.

Already purpose-driven, going through the rigorous B Corp certification process opened Tesh's eyes to new impact areas across Raglan Food Co's operations. On recertification, their score increased from 96 to 111.

And now, after four years of groundwork, Raglan Food Co is launching in New York where they see demand for tastier dairy-free options. Registering in the US as a B Corp too, they hope to spread their ethos globally while growing jobs in Raglan through this major milestone.

    Tesh talks...

Check it out! Loads of (dairy-free) food for thought.

#67 The ins and outs of medical devices with Ian Cooper of Tasman Trolleys and Medical Equipment

#67 The ins and outs of medical devices with Ian Cooper of Tasman Trolleys and Medical Equipment

I got to take a little walk down memory lane during this chat with Ian Cooper of Tasman Trolleys and Medical Equipment.

That's because, before becoming That B Corp Bloke, I sold medical equipment... let's just say, it's an industry with some dark and murky corners.

Not over at Tasman Trolleys though, these guys are a force for good. As award-winning designers and manufacturers of medical trolleys, carts and medical equipment, TTME has been around for 65 years. Incredibly, they have staff who've been with the company 50 years and 40 years.

In our chat, Ian explains how the decision to go B Corp was made when managers sat down to discuss what they could use to validate the positive impact they were already having.

"That's when we decided that B Corp best represented what we wanted to achieve. We had discussions about others, like ISO, but we didn't feel they touched on the holistic component, like how B Corp deals with the social, the workers, the governance, and all those sorts of things. So we thought, 'yeah, this is something we should look at more closely.' As well, we looked at some of the other B Corp companies and they are aspirational brands.

It wasn't a hard decision when we started to break it down."

Ian talks about how B Corp provides a vehicle that enables them to tell their story and help customers and supply chain understand what they're trying to do.

"Again it gives you something that people can refer back to, it gives us structure around which we can go and tell a story. And someone else has validated what we're saying, which is a core component rather than us just saying, 'we're great, you just have to trust us on that'."

In our chat, we cover a range of topics including:

    • How the pandemic impacted the medical device industry as well as business generally
    • The importance of local manufacturing for transparent supply chains
    • How part of becoming B Corp is preparation for what's coming down the line, particularly from the overseas markets
    • The B Corp upper hand when in competition for a bid or client
    • How becoming a purpose-driven business is something that can become more important as you get older and values shift. We ask ourselves, 'Is this what I want? Is this how it should be?'

Check it out! Loads of food for thought.

#66 Unilever ANZ proves you're never too big to B Corp

#66 Unilever ANZ proves you're never too big to B Corp

We've got a big player in the hot seat for this episode!

It was our pleasure to chat with Unilever New Zealand Managing Director Cameron Heath about the how and why of B Corp certification of Unilever Australia and New Zealand.

As one of the NZ's biggest company's to certify, Tim and Cameron discuss the misconception that B Corp certification is only for small businesses. The number of large corporates now seeking B Corp certification is at an all time high and other global units of Unilever are also looking at B Corp.

He reveals that getting certified for Unilever ANZ was sometimes a bumpy road over two years and in the beginning there was not always full internal support for doing it. This hesitation, though, triggered important discussions, it allowed sense checking, and in the end resulted in greater commitment. He talks about some of the initiatives that have come out of the B Corp process including a four-day week and generous parental leave policies.

Cameron also talks about how to balance the tension between being a sustainable business while still driving profit. "We strive to prove that sustainability is not an either/or of business performance, it's an enabler of business performance... an enabler to stronger business performance."

And so much more... have a listen.

#64 AWWA Period Care cofounder Kylie Matthews is leading a planet-friendly, period empowerment revolution

#64 AWWA Period Care co-founder Kylie Matthews is leading a planet-friendly, period empowerment revolution

Unpacking the stigma around periods and getting back to celebrating menstruation as a sacred initiation is all part of the ethos at AWWA Period Care, a sustainable period-proof underwear brand that certified as a B Corp in June 2022.

Rooted in te ao Māori, AWWA period underwear are an alternative to all other menstrual products, removing the need for single-use pads and tampons. Just wear, wash with normal clothes, and line dry.

In this interview, co-founder Kylie Matthews talks to Tim Jones about she went from working as a youth justice social worker, who often encountered period poverty amongst her clients, to successful sustainable entrepreneurship, and the alignment of B Corp and te ao Māori.

Launched in 2018 by friends Kylie Matthews and Michele Wilson, on the back of a Kickstarter campaign, the name AWWA is derived from the Māori word 'awa' meaning river or flow. Māori referred to their period as te awa atua - the divine river. The ikura (period) was celebrated as it meant you could continue your family lineage. This is the foundation of the AWWA brand, a world in which every woman and girl can feel divine and empowered during her period.

"As mothers to daughters, we wanted to advocate for, break down the barriers, and unpack the stigma around periods that we have all faced. To create a more empowering, more sustainable, and a more beautiful future."

AWWA is not Kylie’s first sustainable business venture. On having her first child, the horrors of throw-away single-use pouches used in baby food motivated her to launch a reusable food storage bag business called Kai Carriers.

A few years later, the idea for AWWA was sparked by the research of her friend Michele Wilson, a Māori woman who had been studying natural Māori healing and how Māori managed their ikura (period) in pre-colonisation times.

The women raised funds for the business via Kickstarter and ended up with triple the amount they set out to raise.

As AWWA took off, Kylie sold Kai Carriers to focus fully on the period care brand. To date (end of FY23 financial year), the company estimates it has saved over 35 million single-use pads and tampons going to landfill.

#62 Oyster HR and the meteoric rise of global remote hiring

#62 Oyster HR and the meteoric rise of global remote hiring

Traditionally, the best jobs are limited to people in a handful of the world's wealthiest cities. Yet brilliant people are everywhere. Closing this gap and making the best jobs available to anyone, anywhere, was the motivation behind launching the global employment platform Oyster HR.

Recently B Corp certified, Oyster HR uses software to make global hiring as easy as local hiring. Employers can hire compliantly without setting up a business entity and handle all employment functions from a single automated platform.

In this episode of the B Better podcast, B Better host Tim Jones talks to Oyster HR co-founders Tony Jamous and Jack Mardack about their mission to make the world more equal and freer by democratising access to job opportunities around the world.

"Today more than ever, with remote work, companies in the West can hire anyone anywhere and extend amazing job opportunities to people in emerging economies. And that's why we exist," says Tony.

"Our business model is totally aligned with our impact. The more we employ people around the world, the more we drag the world into more equality and freedom."

Discussion points in this podcast include:

    • Why Oyster was a meteoric success from day one: "What we thought would take 10 years took 10 weeks," says Tony. "Revenue went from zero to double digits in 12 months."
    • How the B Corp Impact Assessment helped them double down on their commitment to positive impact.
    • The Oyster for Impact programme that offers discounts and more to other B Corp and purpose-driven businesses.
    • What happens with countries that don't have a benchmarked living wage.
    • How enabling remote working can reduce 'brain drain' for countries where talented nationals traditionally move to developed markets for better opportunities.
    • How Oyster HR data shows that breaking down barriers to remote working is proving most beneficial to women.
    • The Oyster for Refugees initiative that helps employers find refugee talent and hire them compliantly—at no or discounted costs—to build a brilliant, diverse team.
    • How the free Oyster Academy provides courses to upskill remote workers and job seekers.

BONUS CONTENT - B Locals Aotearoa Webinar series: Impact Storytelling—How to engage and inspire through well-crafted content

Feeling the urge to unveil your inspiring impact story with the world but not quite sure where to start? Don't worry, we've got your back!

Today, we have a special bonus episode where we'll share a recording of a webinar hosted by B Local Ōtautahi Christchurch, which focuses on impact storytelling and how the B Impact Assessment can guide your impact messaging.

Let's hear from not just one but TWO remarkable experts and discover how you can amplify your business's impact through the art of storytelling.

Leon Kirkbeck is the Co-founder of Augusto, a hybrid creative and production agency that brings the thinking and the making together to offer clients everything from concept to creation. With a career history based on the practical side of radio, film, TV, and Interactive marketing, Leon started Augusto with his wife Michelle Walshe in 2008, just as the 'Content revolution' started. Leon remains on the practical side of content creation as a Camera operator and Director. He is also co-creator, producer, and co-host of NZ's running podcast, 'The Cryptid Factor'. Along with Hosts Rhys Darby, Dan Schreiber (and previously David Farrier), the three take a comedic look at the stranger side of life.

Angie Farrugia is B Lab Australia & Aotearoa New Zealand's Director of Communications & Engagement. She joined the organisation in late 2022 to build the profile of the B Corp movement in the region and is now also responsible for strengthening B Corp community engagement. Bringing more than 20 years of communications and marketing experience across Australia and the UK, Angie has led strategic brand development, storytelling, engagement, and campaigns for a wide variety of organisations, from large enterprises and household brands to non-profits, start-ups, and social enterprises.

Remember, your story has the power to change the world. So, go out there and make an impact!

#60 Check him out! Our Tim talks up a B Corp storm on Creative Jam

Generally, our Tim Jones is the one asking the questions on the B Better podcast but in this episode, the tables are turned! The mics are switched! Our Tim is in the hot seat answering questions posed by the brilliant Laura Feavearyear, host of the Creative Jam Check Me Out podcast, as well as a Creative Consultant for the Food and Beverage Industry.

Listen in as Tim talks about the what, why, and how of B Corp. What it is, how to get it, and why you should. He talks with Laura about the four main drivers that are causing the rise and rise of the B Corp movement globally - consumer demand, employee pressure, investor demand, and supply chain pressures.

He talks about the industries that are leading the B Corp charge - consumer brands, personal care, and FMCG. As Tim says, "If you're a consumer brand and not about to get B Corp in the near future, you're going to be a dinosaur."

As well, Laura and Tim discuss greenwashing, greenhushing, business credibility, Gen Z push back, how being B Corp gives Aotearoa New Zealand businesses a massive boost in the international market, and more.

Aspiring B Corp businesses can glean plenty of tips from Tim on how to boost their score to get over the required 80 points threshold.

So what are you waiting for? Take a listen! 👂

B Corp certification is a world-recognised symbol for businesses that have put their processes and their systems through a rigorous process so they can stand tall and say how they want to do better for everyone and everything. It is fast becoming a very important badge to have on your packaging! With 115 B Corp brands already in NZ and a ton more around the world. 🌍

Grow Good is on a mission to help brands go through the B Corp process, understand the questionnaire, and how to make the world a B-etter place. It’s not as hard as it may seem and as Kiwis, we tend to play down our awesomeness for doing good. Tim would love to see more brands reach world-recognised standards with B Corp. 👌

#58 Unconventionalist Abb-d Taiyo: Empowering Change, Sustainability, and Purpose in the Digital Realm

Abb-d's journey into the industry is unlike any other, as he skipped the traditional design education and instead found himself on the courts of NYC playing basketball with top prospects.

But his story doesn't end there. He took a leap into a different court — the world of digital design, which he describes as both challenging and fulfilling, especially as someone from an ethnic minority background.

After getting his hands dirty, honing his digital design craft, and leading major projects and brands at large agencies, Abb-d grew tired of what he describes as "purposeless commercial briefs". He craved meaning and impact and thus made a bold decision to work only with clients committed to ESG.

Determined to make a difference, he co-founded the groundbreaking digital agency, Driftime®, alongside his partner, Sara Taiyo, in 2016. A design and impact agency that approaches complex challenges at the intersection of purpose and intention.

Their mission? To collaborate exclusively within the three pillars of sustainability (social, environmental, and economic) with strict criteria on who they work with in partners and prospects.

Driftime® became a B-Corp in 2021, showing their dedication to impact-driven solutions and empowering partners to bring about real change with a small but efficient team and extended partners globally.

Some exciting projects they've worked on include Only One and Design Declares!

Join us for another insightful conversation with Abb-d Taiyo as we explore how digital design can drive positive change across social, environmental, and economic spheres, and the power of combining creativity with purpose to make a difference in the world.

#57 Ben G the OG G Better Than Kenny G On Why Now Is The Time To CoGo!

#57 Ben G the OG G Better Than Kenny G On Why Now Is The Time To CoGo!

Meet Ben Gleisner, CEO of CoGo — the ultimate triple threat: economist, environmentalist, and social entrepreneur! This dude has been on a mission to safeguard the environment ever since he graduated with a master's degree in climate change economics in 2006. And he's not just all talk. Coz Ben started a number of businesses and charities that are actually making a real difference.

For six solid years, Ben has put his expertise as a senior economist at the New Zealand Treasury, leading teams that worked on climate change policy and wellbeing metrics. But that's not where his story ends, my friend.

In 2011, Ben launched the CoGo platform in New Zealand under the brand 'Conscious Consumers'. He then jetted off to the UK with his wife and two kids in 2018. Why? To launch CoGo on a global scale, of course!

CoGo now has partnerships and seamless integrations with a whopping 40 banks worldwide. And we're talking big names like NatWest (UK), ING (Netherlands), and Commbank (AUS). Together, they're empowering people everywhere to measure and reduce their carbon footprint. With a user base of 16 million and counting, CoGo is making sustainable living accessible to everyone.

But here's the kicker: Ben's not your average do-gooder. He's all about combining data and behavioral science to create a systemic positive impact. This guy really knows how to shake things up and make a real change. Watch out, world! Ben's here to save the planet, one carbon footprint at a time.
