111. Why Saving First $100,000 is Hard [BUT Next $100K is Easy]
Anyone trying to save $100,000 should know it’s not easy, but it’s very possible. In this video I’ll share with you how to make this happen fast.  Charlie Munger, one of the most successful investors of all time said that accumulating the first $100,000 from a standing start, with no seed money, is the most difficult part of building wealth.   It took me about 10 years of investing without any kind of real strategy to get to my first $100k in my 401k and I can tell you the time it takes you to get the next $100k after that is much shorter, but why is that and what can you do to make it to your first $100k faster than 10 years? 86. $400 Unemployment Extension Update and Timeline for Lost Wages Assistance | USDOL NEW Guideline!
$400 Unemployment Extension Update and Timeline for Lost Wages Assistance | USDOL NEW Guideline! When it comes to the additional unemployment benefit, this is where it’s really going to vary from state to state. Here in GA, commissioner Mark Butler was interviewed by WSB-TV and asked when people could expect the benefit and he said he hopes in a few weeks. But as we’ve been discussing that all depends on if legal action is taken against the president's executive actions including the extension of the enhanced unemployment benefits. One important update is new guidance from the White House: Instead of states being required to commit to $100 a week of additional benefits, states could count existing benefits toward their share. In other words, unemployed workers would get an extra $300.

85. WHAT is WRONG with Congress? | Second Stimulus Check and Unemployment Extension Update
WHAT is WRONG with Congress? | Second Stimulus Check and Unemployment Extension Update The additional $600 federal unemployment benefit for most of us on regular UI and PUA expired last week. So you would have received a payment for the $600 sometime this week, but when you certify this weekend next week there will not be the $600. People are asking on this Sunday do we just file the same way and unless your state advises otherwise I would say yes. My dad who’s currently receiving PUA we’re just going to go into his unemployment portal and certify as we have been doing. When it comes to the next stimulus package, There is too much conflict with the republicans and democrats to trust any real progress would be made by this Friday, which is when Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin hoped to have the next stimulus package approved and signed. Second stimulus checks $1200 are pretty much agreed by both democrats and republicans. On Fox News on Wednesday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said "I think whatever we finally agree on, all of these items -- whether it's the FBI building, whether its a tax cut for high-income people in blue states -- ought to come out," McConnell said "the bill ought to be narrowly crafted to deal only with the coronavirus." Unemployment extension is pretty much agreed by everyone, however they differ on the amount to continue. The HEROES Act which passed in the House of Representatives proposed to continue the $600 and the HEALS Act proposed to continue at $200 and then states would be able to adjust it up to $500 so that your total unemployment (including regular or PUA and the additional boost) is no more than 70% of lost wages. 55. 8 Simple Financial Planning Tips for [Habesha] Parents
Financial planning is already a difficult task for so many of us. And when you're an immigrant in the United States of America, this planning can be even more difficult. I hope these 8 tips will help any of you out there who needs some basic understanding of good personal finance choices. Save for your retirement now. At least 10%, 15%, 20% of your income invested in low cost, broad based index funds in your 401k or Roth IRA. Try to spread your money 50/50 between an S&P 500 index fund and a Total Bond index fund. Your children shouldn’t come to you for college funds. Your retirement is more important than pay for your child's eating out or partying. Focus on paying off your house, car note, and credit cards. Do your best to eliminate all your debt. Stop borrowing and cut the credit cards. Your emergency fund needs to cover 3-6 months of living expenses. Credit cards are not for an emergency. Understand this will take time. Get life insurance if you can, a 10-30 year term life insurance policy in case anything happens to you. If you can get enough to cover the home you live in, kids college and life experiences like a wedding. If you can afford the monthly payment then try to get a higher policy amount at least 500,000. Budget budget budget. Your income needs to be on a budget. Get a written will and estate plan set in place. Establish a health directive. If you have young children, you have to make a decision as to what happens to them in the event you are no longer alive. Let's face it, we are not really taught personal finance topics in school and that is just a shame. We learn about history, science, language and math. Our schools even teach us how to cook, but they don't teach us how to spend responsibily? That's just not responsible. As I have grown over the years I've realized that there are some financial lessons every high school and person should be taught.  These are lessons that I wish I learned. So, as I go over these 9 easy financially responsible choices you can make today you probably will want to get your pen and paper ready to take notes. 46. How to Prepare for College With These 7 Tips!
You're never too young to start planning for college, especially nowadays when college can be quite expensive if you're not careful. Every day that you or your child has to prepare and plan is an opportunity that must not be wasted. My college experience was decent to say the least. Nothing spectacular. It could have been better. My grades could have been better. I could have taken fewer student loans with proper planning. I just didn't know a lot and graduated in 5 years with over $40,000 in student loans. I learned quite a bit from my college experience and want to share some tips for when planning for college in that final year of high school. For show notes click here. Be honest and think about what you would do if you didn’t have that car payment? Or that student loan payment from 15 years ago you still have? 44. How to Network to Help Further Your Career
There is no doubt education is a key ingredient to your future success and growth in the professional world. However, today I want to briefly touch on a topic that I believe can sometimes be just as important as your education and that is networking. Don’t get me wrong…in any field you desire to work, education is the foundation that you build your career on. But networking is the wall that helps your career grow and flourish. Even if you want to stay in the same position forever you still have to network and make sure you have colleagues and mentors who you can depend on in case there are ever any emergencies. So today I am just going to keep this short and simple with three basic networking tips.  For complete show notes and links discussed on podcast click here. 41. 3 Credit Card Myths That Can Cause Financial Trouble
So I get it, you want to take that really nice trip to Hawaii and you see an ad for a credit card that will help you do just that. The only problem is that you have now introduced the world of debt into your life with what some people call the cigarette of the financial world, a credit card. I know there are people out there who are going to disagree with this post and understandably so. I used to be one of those people who was obsessed with using my credit card to get the points and cash back rewards, you know the “perks” of having a credit card. That is until I learned that virtually no one gets wealthy from using credit cards. According to a survey conducted on the Forbes 400 (richest 400 people in America as rated by Forbes magazine), 75% said becoming and staying debt free was the best way to build wealth. Hmmm, so using a credit card as a tool to build your credit so you can have a high credit score doesn’t really contribute to your wealth? So what’s the point of a credit card then? Well, let’s see if we can go over the main “reasons” people get credit cards and maybe you’ll come to realize the way I did that credit cards are not my friends and not worth the trouble of having around. 40. 4 Proven Tips For a Happy Retired Life
Where do you see yourself 30 to 40 years from now? Hopefully, you are living your retirement dream. Me personally, I plan to be retired, traveling the world and serving the community even more than before retirement while living in a paid off house without any debt. As we all dream, we need to understand one simple truth. That is, our dreams will only become a reality if we act today and work hard right now. The Employee Benefit Research Institute recently reported that approximately 1 in 4 workers say they have less than $1,000 saved for retirement. That is unacceptable. Why term life insurance? 39. What is an Expense Ratio and Why Does it Matter?
If you're not careful you could easily lose half a million dollars or more of your retirement money. Why? How? The answer is simple: fees! It's a big secret that's not really a secret that many investors like you and me are not always aware of. You're probably enrolled in a 401(k) or have a Roth IRA that is invested in mutual funds and I bet you've never really checked how much the fees are per year. Don't worry though, I've been enrolled in my 401(k) savings plan for 8 years and just started becoming more aware of fees last year. Since then I've learned this is something you can easily understand the basics of so you can make the right adjustments today. And it starts with getting you to understand expense ratios to keep fees as low as possible and maximize your investment returns. For show notes click here. 38. Simple Index Investing Explained For Any Beginner Investor
"How do I get started with investing?" This is a question I get from time to time.  There is no clear cut, one-way answer to this. Real estate or owning a small business is not for everyone.  Remember, personal finance is personal. And still I believe that everyone who's just starting to invest can benefit from having this one low-cost index fund in their portfolio. I would also suggest this to anyone who doesn't have this great investment in their portfolio.  You already know the 3 rules of investing I follow. Now I introduce you to the Total U.S. Stock Market Fund. This is simple index investing. I would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to rate, subscribe and review this podcast. 37. Beware of the 'College Experience' That'll Leave You Broke!
Right now there are millions of high school students who are graduating and moving on to college. You might be one of them or know someone who is. I remember graduating from Georgia Tech in 2009 with about $40,000 in student loans. I finally paid off my student loan debt in 2017 and I cannot tell you how freeing that was. It took me 8 years of my life to pay off my student loan debt! Don't get me wrong, the education was invaluable and I am thankful for the 'college experience' I received. Let's be honest though...no one should have to go into debt to get a 4-year college degree. As you or someone you know is preparing to make the decision of which college to go to, you will want to read this so you can be prepared for what lies ahead. One big goal was to save a 20% downpayment to avoid PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance There are programs available for those who are income-qualified to avoid PMI if you do not have at least a 20% downpayment. Try to keep your monthly mortgage no more than 20-25% of your monthly income. You do not want to have too much house! Do your best to get a 15-year mortgage that will help you pay off your home mortgage faster than having the traditional 30-year mortgage. Understand the location of the home you're buying. 33. Having the Courage to Say No [To Bad Financial Products]
The older I’ve gotten the easier it has become to say no to certain things in life. Family comes first. Wife must agree with commitments I make work related. Be on one accord. Happy wife, happy life. Saying no right away is necessary to and the right thing to do. Delaying your no causes tension and is harder to do the longer you wait. You always have an option and a right to say no. Simply saying yes, because you don’t want to hurt people’s feelings is NOT helpful. If you never learn to say no, your “yes” will never be genuine. Join the Habesha Finance Facebook group.

31. Ultimate Life Insurance Strategy for Wealth Building 2019
Generally, for all young people level term or annual renewable term will be your best life insurance option. This is because you have 20, 30+ years to get your finances straight and become self-insured. Remember, the goal is always financial independence NOT financial dependence. Save, invest and stay away from debt. Understand Estate Tax In 2019, estates with a value equal to or less than $11.4 million do not have to pay the federal estate tax. This number is usually changing as it is adjusted for inflation. Any value above this amount is taxed at 40%. There are strategies out there like keeping your assets in irrevocable trusts or an LLC to minimize the tax impact of your estate when you die. Personally, I like the idea of setting up an LLC or a trust where I can minimize the impact of taxes and possibly even avoid that impact all together. Even if your assets never go above the $11.4 million mark or whatever it is, having a trust is always a good bet so that probate is avoided. Having a will and a living trust are basic, essential tools you can greatly benefit from having. The average of all the 40-year periods for the S&P 500 since 1928 has yielded about an 11.8% with dividends reinvested. The strategy for young people with life insurance is to save and invest as much as possible. Get a low-cost annual renewable term life product if you want life insurance until your 60 or 80. Low-cost index funds are the way to go in taxable and nontaxable savings accounts. If you absolutely want a permanent life insurance product, make sure you understand the fees, charges, pros and cons before you sign up. The amount of life insurance is going to vary from person to person. Make sure the amount of life insurance in your policy is at least 10 times your income and covers all the liabilities for you and your family.   Life insurance for stay-at-home-parents is needed and that amount will vary from family to family. $250,000 to $500,000 should cover most stay-at-homes. Another strategy of looking at how much term life insurance to sign up for is by analyzing how much your family needs yearly to survive and multiplying that amount by 25.  For example, let’s say you want your family to have $50,000/year to live off using the 4% rule. You would need a life insurance policy for about $1,250,000. A 35-year old male with good health in the state of Georgia would pay about $83/mo for a 30-year level term policy. The need for life insurance should slowly decrease as you age and build wealth.  Do not think having life insurance through your employer is enough. You do not know how long your role at your job will remain. You need to have a separate policy outside of work. Fellow parents and providers, let us be more responsible to our loved ones. If you’re interested in getting life insurance I recommend checking out Haven Life or Health IQ and they will help you get some of the best life insurance quotes online. I received my Mass Mutual policy via Haven Life and so far I’ve been very pleased.

30. Breaking Down Permanent Life Insurance
I told you there are many different types of life insurance products out there right? In the beginning we discussed various temporary life insurance products.  Now we will talk about permanent life insurance. There are three main types of permanent life insurance that we’re going to cover here on a high level. First, let’s look at whole life insurance. Whole life insurance is exactly how it reads. Life insurance for your whole life essentially.  Whole life insurance policies offer fixed premiums and also have an investment component referred to as the policy’s cash value. Another factor in the whole life insurance product is the ability to take a loan out against the cash value you have built up.  One of the biggest complaints about whole life insurance is that only the death benefit is what your beneficiaries receive, not the cash value. Make sure that you understand whether or not the permanent life policy you sign up for will distribute your cash value to your designated beneficiaries upon your death.  The next type of permanent life insurance to review is called universal or adjustable life insurance.  A little more flexible than whole life insurance.  With a universal policy you can adjust the policy amount pending a medical examination which would also impact your premiums. Typically the investment returns on these cash value policies are very low.  Review where your money is being allocated to and analyze the history of the investments within cash value policies. The final type of permanent life insurance I’m going to introduce is variable life insurance (VL). In a VL, you can invest your cash value in stocks, bonds, money market funds and other assets.   Growth of your investments in a VL product grows tax-deferred.  With a VL policy you will want to pay close attention to the fees and premium costs.  Typically you’re going to pay higher premiums and incur higher fees. Permanent life insurance products can offer estate planning benefits like protecting your assets when you die.  In 2019, this amount is $11.4 million for the individual and is usually adjusted for inflation.  Make sure you fully understand the concept of this benefit so you can be sure you provide the best chance of survival for your family or whomever survives you.

29. Term Life Insurance Review and Why You Need This!
With so many different types of life insurance out there my hope is to give a high level overview and make it presentable here so you can choose what’s right for you and your family.  Unless you are financially independent with millions and billions of dollars to your name and no debt, YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED LIFE INSURANCE! Never buy a financial product you do not understand! What is term life insurance? Well one definition is, “life insurance that pays a benefit in the event of the death of the insured during a specified term.”  Basically life insurance that is effective for a certain amount of years from 1 to 5 to 20 to 30 years.  Nowadays you can find some insurance companies that offer term periods as long as 35 years! What’s so great about term life insurance?  You’re typically going to pay a significant amount less than most other life insurance products. Term life insurance products are about 10-20 times less than term permanent life insurance products. Allows you to diversify your investment portfolio and build wealth. If you’re a 30 year old male and in good health you can get a $1,000,000 dollar 30-year term life insurance policy for as low as $60/month. One of the downsides could be that term life insurance is temporary insurance. There are mainly two types of term life insurance to choose from. Level term life insurance and annual renewable term life insurance. With level term you simply pay a flat fee for the term of the policy. Annual renewable term provides coverage one year at a time up to a certain age which varies from state to state. For example, in New York the maximum age is 80.  One major benefit of annual renewable term is you have the option to renew the policy without having to take a medical exam. There is another type of annual renewable term life insurance policy called decreasing term insurance which provides a death benefit that decreases over the life of the policy, but not common. For life insurance quotes check out the links below: Haven Life Health IQ Make sure to get multiple quotes before settling for one insurance product.
