Taking the Stage with the founder of Upstage Lung Cancer

Taking the Stage with the founder of Upstage Lung Cancer

We're taking the stage with the incredible survivor and advocate, Hildy from Upstage Lung Cancer.

Starting with an accidental slip in some new shoes, Hildy's wild journey led her down a path to an early lung cancer diagnosis. After catching and treating it early enough, Hildy now spends her energy gathering the performing arts community together to help support driving awareness of lung cancer to the general public through her non-profit."We use our breath and our lungs to sing and to talk and we try to have a positive use in that direction."

What she explains beyond the fact that lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death and a disease that is likely to impact women, is that lung cancer is also treatable if diagnosed early enough. "Beyond the CT scan, we're looking at much more innovative ways of finding lung cancer early [...] It goes to 22% survival in 5 years to almost 60% survival if you get it at the earliest possible stage"

Bloodied Up: The battle of a blood cancer survivor

Bloodied Up: The battle of a blood cancer survivor

Melissa Antoncic knows firsthand how hard it is to fight through a cancer diagnosis to a complete remission. She was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) at 19 years old and found there was a lack of services and support available.

“I felt like I fell between the cracks, not really being a child or an adult in the eyes of the healthcare providers. At that point, I knew I had the capacity to ensure that the same thing didn’t happen to others,” Melissa said.

As Director of Patient Support at BCFM since 2016, Melissa can ensure that those cracks don’t have the opportunity to claim more people diagnosed with blood cancers. She is in charge of developing, supporting and managing statewide programming and services for pediatric and adult blood cancer patients and their families.

Before joining BCFM, she was the lead Grief Support Coordinator at Arbor Hospice, where she worked for more than nine years, providing emotional support and resources to grieving children and adults through group therapy and individual support.

Melissa holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Michigan State University, and received her Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University, but that’s not how she started out her education. Growing up she wanted to be a veterinarian and was in the pre-vet program at MSU before her leukemia diagnosis. After her diagnosis, she knew she could make a bigger impact with her life.

“I really enjoy knowing that I’m a part of something bigger. At BCFM, we provide an opportunity not just to offer emotional or financial support, but to truly impact the lives of blood cancer patients in the state of Michigan,” Melissa said.

Cancer before 40 - how to stop living a deferred life

In this episode, our founder speaks with her sister Cindy who, alongside of their eldest sister Stephanie, was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in 2017. Thankfully to a genetic test, doctors were able to catch the cancer early but both sisters underwent surgery to remove their breasts and ovaries and had both went through chemotherapy treatments. Cindy by coincidence was also the same age that their mother had been when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. Listen in on this chat about her views on most people living a “deferred life of maybes, one day and some time”, on what she remembers from her mother’s cancer diagnosis and finally on the value of self-care. Here is her story.
