Hunters and Farmers
Hunters and Farmers is not a podcast on anthropology. Hunters and Farmers describe two different sales approaches. Most musicians try there best to be hunters and forget farming their existing contacts.

On Practicing
More often than not, we focus on our mistakes when practicing and rehearsing. But nobody is interested in us performing without mistakes! Everyone wants to be touched by our music. We, therefore, need to change the way we practice.

Forget Social Media!
Social media is a waste of your time. It does not help you build meaningful connections unless you have over 10.000 followers. Focus on personal meetings, phone calls, well-researched and well-written e-mails instead.

Apple Music Classical is the Wrong Move
Apple just launched the long-awaited Apple Music Classical app. Since Apple acquired Primephonic in August 2021, we have waited for that. But is a new music app dedicated to classical music the right move? Bernhard Kerres argues that is the wrong move for many reasons - especially because it puts classical music once more in an elitist ivory tower. But there are some lessons to be learned for musicians and people working in classical music.

From Student to Master
In the first episode of 2023, Bernhard Kerres talks about the path from student to master. He compares a musician's career with a second adolescence. To become your own artist, you need to redefine your relationship with your teachers and mentors.

Music is Political.
With the war in Ukraine, some musicians say they do not understand politics. They use that as an excuse for not standing up for their values. In many countries, music and the arts are protected in the constitution. Does that special protection not mean one should engage even more in the greater good of our communities?

01/22 Guitarist Heike Matthiesen on Female Composers
Have you ever wondered why there are just so few female guitarists? You will find even fewer female composers whose works are performed. Heike Matthiesen changes both. She is a leading female guitarist who played all over the world. She is also an advocate for female composers. In that role, she is a board member of the Archiv Frau & Musik (Archive of Women in Music). Listen to a conversation with her about the female side of classical music.

20/21 Money! 💰💰💰
Negotiating fees is one of the toughest topics for any musician. Putting a number to us as person does not feel right. And then there is always someone who offers a concert for a lower fee. Bernhard Kerres introduces a different view point on fees and negotiating your contract.

18/21 The Album is Dead. Long Live Streaming!
One can wine about the decline in classical music audiences or look at the facts. Especially during the COVID19 pandemic, more and more people have turned to classical music. Streaming has long overtaken album sales. It is time for any musician to re-think their recording strategies and be present on all streaming platforms. Stop thinking about albums. Think playlists and share your music!

17/21 I am a Musician - Flutist Veronika Vitazkova
"I am a musician. I am free. I play what I want, when I want, with who I want." - Flutist Veronika Vitazkova in an interview with Bernhard Kerres. Veronika has over 50 different flutes and plays them all. She accepts the challenge to learn playing a new flute within weeks and to perform publicly with it or even record a soundtrack with it. Yes, she studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, but instead of going through the narrow - and crowded - door of orchestra auditions, she found a much more fulfilling and fascinating musical life without needing to go through that door.

16/21 Sit Still!
We have been treating classical music performances stricter than any religious services. Isn't it time to to actually consider the audiences more? Why do people come to a concert? Can one only appreciate music by sitting completely still and silently? Bernhard Kerres ponders these questions in the latest episode of the BYOM Podcast.

14/21 The Joy and the Anxiety of Performing Live Again
Luckily the world is opening up again. Live concerts are popping up again. A great joy for musicians and audiences. But with all the joy one can not neglect the anxiety of performing in front of a live audience after such a long break. Bernhard Kerres has five steps to overcome that anxiety.

13/21 Get in the Head of Audience Members
Many presenters and musicians treat concerts and opera performances almost in a religious way. Only enlightened people are allowed to worship the high art of classical music. The end of the COVID19 pandemic allows us to rethink that. A great first step is observing audience members and listening to them.

In a recent Clubhouse discussion, Bernhard Kerres was asked, when the world would return to normal after the pandemic. The answer - probably never. In this podcast Bernhard analyses four trends around the pandemic and its impact on classical music. From that he derives tips for classical musicians to have a successful career post-pandemic.

08/21 Another 80:20 Rule
Driving for excellence is key to your artistic profile. But if you apply that drive for excellence to all your activities, you will be slowed down and frustrated. Bernhard Kerres offers a little exercise on where to utilise your drive for excellence and where to avoid it. And he looks forward to the results of the little exercise he has for you.

07/21 Breaking the Recording Chains
Recordings have been technically limited by time. There were only so many minutes you could press on an LP or a CD. But with streaming taking over, that changes completely. This allows musicians to be significantly more creative in sharing their recorded music.

06/21 Does Form Follow Function?
With opera houses and concert houses closed in so many parts of the world due to the pandemic, on can question the almost cultist tradition of concert and opera performances. As beautiful as they might be to the illuminati, they might stop many people from enjoying classical music. The pandemic is a good time to re-think of how we share our music and what we can change to communicate musically with more people.

05/21 Your Secret Pet Projects
Many musicians have amazing creative projects but keep them secret from the world. There are pianists writing pop songs. There are cellists finding their roots in folk music. Others are painting, cooking, writing etc. Bernhard Kerres argues that it is time to reveal and share your secret projects. They are an important part of your Lovemar.

04/21 Groundhogs, Ostriches, and Penguins
The COVID19 pandemic has been a massive challenge to classical music and performing arts. Musicians have, in our experience, reacted in three ways:
- like a groundhog hoping that things will get better when they wake up again,
- like ostriches, ignoring what is happening, and hoping that everything will be back to normal when they raise their head, and
- like penguins, adapting to the harshest climate one can imagine.
Bernhard Kerres talks about the three different ways of dealing with the crisis and encourages musicians, to act like penguins.

03/21 Be Adventurous in the Digital World!
The various lockdowns and closures of cultural institutions is challenging. Many musicians have taken to the internet to share their music. But is it enough to replace the physical experience with a digital one? Bernhard Kerres argues, that musicians should use this unusual times to experiment and to see the any event from the audiences' perspective. It is not only about making great music. It is also about providing a unique experience. This is the time to experiment!
The best guide for your technical setup comes from Sofia Livotov and Satriya Krisna, two amazing singers. Have a look at their YouTube site TuneInsiders with a lot of really useful tutorials: www.youtube.com/c/TuneInsiders

02/21 What Promoters Will Look At
We are often asked, how promoters find talent. Recommendations and the personal network is definitely still the best and most successful way to get in touch with promoters. Over the years, promoters have learned not only to look at competitions, but also at social media for talent they are interested in. How will that change through the COVID19 crisis? - Bernhard Kerres argues, that continuing to make music and to find an audience in these difficult times will get the attention of promoters.

19/20 You are Qualified! 🏁
Musicians should neither worry about being part of the ocean of greatness, nor should they worry about competition. Horse compete. Musicians don't. But finding one's own Lovemark, the Why one makes music is key to differentiate oneself in that ocean of greatness.

18/20 Am I Good Enough? (AGAIN...) 🛑
Self-doubt and perceived competition stop many musicians in their growth. They forget that they actually have already mastered greatness with all the hours and hard work they put in. Before even entering university, they are close to the 10,000 hours to greatness Malcolm Gladwell cites. Bernhard Kerres suggests to acknowledge your greatness and ignore the stop signs popping up in our mind.

17/20 How Much Do You Practice?
You can practice at least three hours a day or not more than three hours a day. The little difference in phrasing between "at least" and "not more" seems insignificant but changes the quality of our practicing immensely. Bernhard Kerres explain the impact a change like that can have on the quality of your practicing and therefore your career.

16/20 Thinking Beyond Concert Halls
Is the future of music making in opera houses and concert halls? Yes, but probably not only. Bernhard Kerres argues that especially with the crisis of COVID19 it is time to think of delivering music to people in other ways than just opera houses and concert halls.

15/20 Music Matters
It is time to change the narrative. Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, suggested in an itv interview, that artists should retrain. An outcry by artists and media followed. But the question is not if society should support the arts and artists. The question is, argues Bernhard Kerres, do the arts and especially classical music support society. And he answers that with a clear yes.

14/20 Four Steps to Networking and Small Talk
Networking and small talk can kill people - especially introverts. Musicians have trained their whole live to express themselves through their instruments and their music. And suddenly they find themselves at a reception or at a dinner where they need to talk to people. Not easy.
Bernhard Kerres has four steps for you, how to start and lead such a conversation and even lead it to a point where it is useful for you.

13/20 Am I Good Enough? 😳
For so many musicians, young as well established, the question, if they are good enough, is always in their mind. Bernhard Kerres argues, that this is the wrong question. After having worked so hard, you are good enough. The right question is, what makes you interesting.

12/20 House Concerts in the Middle of Nowhere
Meet Leona Rajakowitsch and Clemente Prudencio, two young musicians, who did not want to wait until the COVID19 crisis is over to share their music. They started a series of house concerts in a small town in the South of Austria. The Sunday evening concerts have quickly established themselves as a cultural highlight in Carinthia. Leona and Clemente not only perform themselves but enjoy inviting colleagues and friends to make music with them. You find more about these concerts at www.hauskonzerte.at.

11/20 The Corona Scenarios 3
Following the last episode, Bernhard Kerres discusses potential scenarios of the COVID19 crisis and its impact on classical music. In this episode, he takes you to August 2021 - one year from now. He invites you to consider three scenarios:
- Australia, based on the current quarantine regulations in Australia
- Vaccine, based on reports from Goldman Sachs and others about the availability of a COVID19 vaccine by December 2020
- Seniors, based on various research requiring senior citizens to be either vaccinated or to stay at home.
Again, Bernhard Kerres suggests that listeners get together with friends and colleagues to discuss the various scenarios and consider what it means for their careers.

With the COVID 19 crisis many musicians turned to social media and the internet to spread their music. They brought joy to many people. Some people in the music world are now concerned if audiences will ever make the effort to go to a live concert again - and even pay for it. Bernhard Kerres, author of the career handbook for classical musicians, Be Your Own Manager, and former CEO and Artistic Director of the Wiener Konzerthaus is not concerned.

32/19 No More Boring Concerts
Today's concert format comes from the late 19th century. It has something which is almost religious. And it is probably completely outdated. Bernhard Kerres talks about how musicians can think about new and different concert formats involving fans, colleagues, music lovers, and people who have never been to a concert. And, if you have great ideas, Bernhard will share your idea on the next episodes of this podcast.

The places you lived in are the starting point for a real community.
