47 - TLWIAS Book Club Modern Westerns
Rob and Michelle read two modern westerns this month, told from a different perspective than traditional western stories.
In "Outlawed" by Anna North, Ada has to escape her home town when she's labeled a witch for being unable to conceive a child. She runs to a convent, and then to a gang of outlaws in Wyoming.
In "Upright Women Wanted" by Sarah Gailey, Esther is a stowaway in a Librarian's book wagon to escape her life after her best friend/sweetheart is killed. In this reinvented pulp western, you meet some brave librarians who are working against the newly fascist government in a speculative future dystopian America.

Listen this week to our discussion on Gunsmoke and Trail Dust, whether or not your hosts liked the book, and a little history about the author and his other pen names. 25 - Your Brain on Social Media
Rob and Michelle talk about how our brains are actively working against us when consuming media of all kinds, but we're particularly vulnerable on social media. Our brains are lazy and not necessarily equipped for quick critical thinking. It's important to know how our social media feeds work against us on purpose so we can work to counter it's effects.
Materials discussed in this episode are The Social Dilemma (a documentary available on Netflix), "You are Not a Gadget" by Jaron Lanier and "Think Before You Like" by Guy Harrison.

24 - Recommended Young Adult Novels
In this episode, Rob and Michelle discuss some novels from the Young Adult section that they recommend to anyone looking for a fast, engaging read. A novel is classified as Young Adult (YA) by a few metrics – you can expect that the motivations and the feelings of the characters will interact with problems in a different way than an adult novel. YA novels deal with problems in the immediate future, rather than thinking about long term goals and effects. Generally speaking, a YA novel will be less graphic than an adult novel, but modern YA does not shy away from the realities of the world. The pacing will be fast, the plot will be intriguing, and the characters will make you want to root for them. Materials mentioned in this episode are Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo; The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater; Places No One Knows by Brenna Yovanoff; Rotters by Daniel Krauss; Prom Date by Diane Hoh.

Both of your hosts found old favorites to revisit on Hoopla, and then they close the episode with a discussion about grief and allowing yourself the stages of grief right now, even though it can be difficult to put a finger on what you’re grieving. 2020 was quite the ride, and your hosts would like to encourage you to take the time to acknowledge your feelings in whatever stage of grief you might be in and allow yourself the space to work through it.

In this episode, Rob and Michelle discuss the things that they do to gear up for the Holiday season. Maybe it's movies, maybe it's a local tradition, maybe it's a ritual that you participate in every year that really gets your heart going.
Listen for the traditions, the recipe recommendations, and the bonus list of punny Holiday mystery book titles!
14 - No Guilt
On this very special episode of Two Librarians Walk Into A Shelf, Rob and Michelle have a discussion on guilt and how it relates to the media they consume. They also introduce the first book for the Two Librarians Walk Into A Shelf Book Club, A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean. 13 - The Halloween Variety Show Special
Trick or treat!?
Maybe both.
In this episode, Rob and Michelle ran out of ideas for October and channeled their creative energy (and the talents of their coworkers) to recreate the magic of an old TV Holiday Special. It is heavily influenced by the 1976 Paul Lynde Halloween Special. These no-holds-barred TV events included sketch comedy, special guests, and musical numbers for a wacky, feel-good time. The Paul Lynde Special included Betty White, Florence Henderson, Witchipoo, The Wicked Witch of the West, Donnie and Marie, and the first TV appearance for KISS.
Paul Lynde is most famous for his role as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched, and his time as the center square on Hollywood Squares. Show notes are here.
2020 has been difficult for many people for many reasons, and we can’t possibly address the ways in which and how hard this time has been, but what we can try to do is to bring you a little creativity and a few laughs to brighten your day.

02 - With a little help from your friends
Every week, librarians Rob and Michelle give listeners their recommendations on the latest books, movies and other materials to check out at their local library. Many of the recommendations are available to stream with Hoopla.
In our second episode of Two Librarians Walk Into a Shelf, your hosts, Rob and Michelle, will take you on a tour of their favorite books and movies that celebrate friendship in many ways. For a list of recommendations, visit: https://blog.hmcpl.org/node/204
