The After Party - Black Women & African Spirituality III "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

The After Party - Black Women & African Spirituality III "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

One of the biggest lies we tell in church is that everyone has to believe the same thing in the same way in order to be right with God. That’s part of the reason a lot of Black people look at African Traditional Religions (aka ATR) with fear and skepticism. We are so often detached from our spiritual heritage because we’ve been force fed a theology for generations that says anything that doesn’t look like Sunday morning at 11 am in the sanctuary of your Christian church must be of the devil. Wrong!

Humanity connected to The Divine long before Christianity, long before the Bible, long before Europe set out to colonize the globe. And we are committed to raising the awareness of that reality.

Hey there, I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes; Cigars and Spirituality, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith, which serves as a resource for those of you who find yourself on the journey of decolonizing and deconstructing your faith.

Welcome to Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. Today, we’re diving in to The After Party of Black Women & African Spirituality III. For those who are wondering, yes we are going to record “Black Women & African Spirituality IV next season.

In this after-party episode we’re taking a deeper look at how people fear ancestor veneration even though we already engage in the practice frequently. And we’ll answer a question from one of our live virtual audience members about how you venerate your ancestors when you don’t even know who they are. I’m joined in this episode by Pamela Merritt “The Therapist”, Tierney “AT&T” Jordan and our special guest, Pastor Tisha Dixon-Williams. Around these parts she’s like royalty, so she’s affectionately known as “Her Grace.”

Tisha, who is the pastor of The First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton, dropped one of the most profound statements we’ve ever heard here at Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality when I asked her if she had any advice for people who were interested in exploring African Spirituality. We’re going to jump in at the point she answers that question.

You’ll then hear me close out the official episode before we jump into the after party. So pull up chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time.

The After Party - Misogyny in the Church: A Woman’s Perspective "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

The After Party - Misogyny in the Church: A Woman’s Perspective "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

When we first started this movement, men were primarily drawn to it because we smoke cigars. As we have had more and more inclusive conversations about gender and sexuality, the ratios are beginning to shift and we have more women who engage Holy Smokes now. I love how the women have plugged in, but it pains me that men run from conversations that hold us accountable for our misogynistic ways. We regularly challenge men to let go of our need to have authority over women and embrace the authority we have over our own lives. So, shout out to the men who aren’t afraid to have these, sometimes, uncomfortable conversations.

When we invited Danyelle Thomas, aka The Unfit Christian, to the show to talk about Misogyny in the Church, she walked us through some of the ways the church has been harmful to women. In a moment you’ll hear Janackeh, one of our Patreon community members, mention how indoctrination can be so strong that we don’t even realize how much we are being harmed by it until someone else points it out. I liken it to not realizing that you are holding your breath until someone tells you to breathe. Well in this episode, Danyelle Thomas challenged us to breathe. We originally released the main portion of this conversation with The Unfit Christian on Feb 21 of this year. We talked a little bit about how Misogyny in the Church has affected Danyelle’s relationship with the church and with The Divine.

Today I invite you to join us for the unreleased After Party of that same episode where we took it a step further to discuss how Misogyny in the Church has affected Danyelle’s relationship with herself. In this segment, she raises the question, “How can you date men when you hate men?” which reminds me of a meme from Phaedra Peer that I recently saw on social media which says, “The fact that I’m still attracted to men should prove that sexuality isn’t a choice.” That’s a good moment to say Happy Pride Month to my Q+ family.

We’re about to jump into the after party of Misogyny in the Church: A Woman’s Perspective with Danyelle Thomas, aka Unfit Christian. We’ll also be joined at the midway point by Janackeh and Angela from our Patreon community who joined us backstage in the virtual greenroom for this experience.

Fair warning, if you’re not comfortable with Black people using the term “nigga” this episode will make you cringe. After about 5 minutes of talking with Danyelle, I adopted her as my cousin (cuz that’s what Black folks do) and we got real comfortable with our language. Hell I even said at one point that on some subjects I don’t give a damn what the Bible says, because I’ve studied it enough to know that I don’t agree with what it says on some matters. Yeah, I know, that’s a lot. But it’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So how about you just pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it.

Pre-Show Red Lip Theology with Candice Benbow "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

Pre-Show Red Lip Theology with Candice Benbow "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

Here at Holy Smokes we have a lot of interaction before and after we record the podcast episodes. And sometimes the nuggets of wisdom that are shared in those moments are just as impactful as the content we release for the public. Only our Patreon community gets all of the footage.

For example, that one time we had Candice Benbow on the podcast we had an extensive dialogue in the pre-show about how people’s perceptions of us are not our responsibility. In case you’re not familiar with Candice Benbow, she is a public theologian and author of Red Lip Theology: For Colored Girls Who’ve Considered Tithing to The Beauty Supply Store When Sunday Morning Isn’t Enough. While she was with us in the pre-show, we also discussed how people’s reactions to her words have a lot to do with how our culture treats women. And when our conversation turned to talking about Jesus, Candice said, “I’m not committed to a sinless savior.” GASP.

She gave us so much food for thought that we just had to share it with you.

We’re about to jump into the pre-show episode from Red Lip Theology featuring Candice Benbow. During this exchange you’ll also hear the voices of Myron Randall “The Mystic” and Tierney “AT&T” Jordan. We’re going to jump where we discuss how Candice has been accused of taking shots at people on social media.

So pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it.

Intermission Drop

You can always count on Myron The Mystic to say something wild and mildly inappropriate. So, like I mentioned earlier this is the pre-show of the Red Lip Theology episode. After Myron took that shot, we addressed some technical issues with the live virtual audience. And then we got right back to it with Candice. And here is where she goes into the conversation about people’s need for Jesus to be a sinless savior. Gird your loins. It’s about to get heavy in here.

After Party - The Theology of Parenting: Emotional Suppression "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

After Party - The Theology of Parenting: Emotional Suppression "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S6 Bonus

When was the last time you had a good cry? How did it make you feel? Did you feel better because you let it out? Did you feel ashamed at the mere fact that you were crying? It’s good to pay attention to those moments because it can tell us a lot about how we relate to our own emotions. Well last week we released The Emotional Suppression installment of our Theology of Parenting Series where we broke down why we are so often disconnected from our emotions and how we can reconnect so that we don’t pass it down to our children.

Well, in case you didn’t know, we have now entered Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. Each time we record an episode with our live virtual audience from Patreon there is a pre-show and an after party. Sometimes the content in those portions of the recording are equally as rich as what we publish to the podcast platforms. So today we’re sharing the After-Party of the Emotional Suppression episode.

Here’s the context: During the Emotional Suppression episode, one of the members of our community, Ariana Valenzuela made a comment in the chat that caused me to burst into tears. Ariana is not only a member of the Holy Smokes Community, but she’s also a member of the leadership team for The Faith Community. And she is my cousin. She recently experienced a significant loss in her life that I wouldn’t wish on anybody. So, I have been doing my best to support her during this period of her life. At one point in the episode from last week we were talking about effective approaches we can take to develop emotional health in the lives of people, which led Ariana to make this comment in the chat. She said, “I can testify that Kristian does indeed take that approach. As my family, as my pastor, a month ago he held the power in his hands to destroy me and he chose love and life. #itsTFCforme”

So yall, when I read that comment I immediately started crying. So now we’re going to jump into the after party where I explain what about that statement made me so emotional. When you hear the long pause in this episode, it’s not because the sound went out. It’s because we were all sitting in the moment. And I started crying again… So pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it.

Would Jesus be A Christian? "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Many people assume that Jesus was a Christian because the religion was started in his name. But the truth is Christianity didn’t even exist until after Jesus’ life ended. Jesus was a Jew.

In September of 2020 we recorded an episode where we wondered out loud, “If Jesus were alive today, would he be a Christian?” That may seem blasphemous, but the reality is that Jesus would have had to change his religion if he decided to be a Christian (or practice multiple religions).

We never released the after party of this episode. So, today I want to invite you into this experience where Karema "The Truth" shared her timeless wisdom and Grayson "The Pundit" points out how conversations about Jesus always go straight to hell.

I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith. Welcome to the final installment Postseason 5 of Holy Smokes where we are delivering some content you haven’t heard, while we gear up for the launch of Season 6 in two weeks!

We’re going to drop you into the after party at the point where Kervance The Kingmaker draws a parallel between Holy Smokes, Rush Limbaugh and Jesus.

So here it is, the never before released After Party of “Would Jesus be a Christian?” right here from Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it!

Misogyny in The Church: A Woman’s Perspective "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Misogyny in The Church: A Woman’s Perspective "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Our most popular episode to date is “Misogyny in The Church: A Woman’s Perspective” where I was joined by The Unfit Christian herself, Danyelle Thomas. Danyelle and I quickly discovered that we are cousins based on our kindred spirits.

Danyelle shared so much insight on this episode. The live virtual recording had almost 400 comments in the chat which is double what we normally have. Of course, we weren’t able to cover all of the discussion points. Danyelle shared on the episode how misogyny in the church has affected her relationship with the church and her relationship with God. Now, I want to invite you to the after party where she shares how misogyny in the church has affected her relationship with herself. You’ll also have a chance to hear some feedback from Angela and Janackeh, two members of our Patreon community.

I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith. Welcome to Postseason 5 of Holy Smokes where we are delivering some content you haven’t heard while we gear up for Season 6. We’re going to drop you into this episode at the point where Danyelle and I are conversing about the impact of how we use gender-specific language for The Divine. You will hear me close out the official episode and begin the after party.

So here it is, the never before released After Party of “Misogyny in The Church: A Woman’s Perspective” featuring the Unfit Christian, Danyelle Thomas, right here from Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. Should Black People be Christian? "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Should Black People be Christian? "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Should Black People be Christians? It’s a question that is asked more frequently the more exposure Black people in America get to other cultures, ideologies and theologies. I know some people whose answer is “absolutely not” and others who would suggest “Christianity is the only way.”

Well, last February we unpacked this question with our special guest, Stephen Thurston II, and some of our cast members including Karema The Truth, Nikki The Anchor, Grayson The Pundit & Myron The Mystic. And of course there was so much content from the After Party of that episode recording that is simply too good not to share. This was one of those episodes where our live virtual audience had plenty of questions for us to process in real time. For example, Josh Carpenter, one of patrons who has appeared as a guest on the podcast before shared concerns in the comments about rooting so much of our theology in lived experience because of how some people will manipulate that idea to justify harmful activities. We addressed that concern and others in this bonus episode.

We’re going to drop you into this episode just as Stephen Thurston is giving his closing thoughts on whether Black people should be Christians. At that point you will hear me close out the official episode and begin the after party.

So here it is, the never before released After Party of “Should Black People be Christians” right here from Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it!

Christian Cancel Culture: Critical Race Theory "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Christian Cancel Culture: Critical Race Theory "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Happy Black History Month! Last year, Critical Race Theory became this huge polarizing topic in the United States. It seemed like everywhere I turned someone was trying to discredit the theory as an “anti-American distortion of U.S. History”, especially conservative Christian pundits. So guess what we did, recorded a podcast episode about it in June of 2021.

Ya’ll it was so good that we only had a chance to cover half of our discussion points on the episode. There were two big questions that we had to save for the after party of the episode, you know, the portion we record with our Patreon community that never gets published to the podcast platforms. Here are the two statements we tossed around in the after party. 1. Some people say Critical Race Theory is a distraction from the teachings of Jesus. 2. Some people suggest the major fault with Critical Race Theory is that it suggests Christianity plays a major role in racial oppression. Do you have thoughts on those two statements? Well, so do we. And we’re inviting you into that conversation right now.

I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith. On this episode I’m joined by Karema “The Truth”, Myron “The Mystic” and Nikki “The Anchor” to get to the bottom of why so many people hate Critical Race Theory so much. Fair warning, we got pretty pissed off while recording this episode. Well let me speak for myself, I got pissed off while recording this episode. So, if you’ve never heard me use colorful language, brace yourselves, because I dropped the F-Bomb on this episode.

We’re going to drop you in as we are closing out the official episode. You will hear me do my closing remarks like I always do, which marks the beginning of the After Party. So here it is, the After Party of “Christian Cancel Culture: Critical Race Theory” right here from Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. Let’s get to it!

Christian Cancel Culture: Language "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Christian Cancel Culture: Language "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Have you ever been chastised or seen someone be chastised for using the term “luck”? I sure have. It’s like a curse word in some Christian settings. Some Christians treat it as an offense to God if we dare to say someone was lucky. Here at Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality we released an episode on Language in June of last year as a part of our Christian Cancel Culture series. In this episode we unpacked how various expressions of Christianity seek to control people’s language. And we weren’t talking about your traditional curse words. No, we are talking about the elitism with which Christians approach our jargon. It's not luck. It's a blessing. I wish y'all would stop giving the Universe credit for stuff God did. It's not energy it's HIS spirit.

Well, we never shared the after party of that episode publicly, so today you get a glimpse at a portion of our discussion that never made it to the podcast platforms until today. I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of holy smokes, the pastor of the Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith. Today I’m joined by Tierney “At&t” Jordan and Kervance “The Kingmaker” Ross. The triviality of this topic was so frustrating that Kervance told me at the beginning of the after party he didn’t want to talk with me anymore. Well guess what, he talked to me anyway.

So here it is, the after party of Christian Cancel Culture: Language from Season 4 of Holy Smokes: Cigars and Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. So, let's get to it!

Christian Cancel Culture: Rituals "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Christian Cancel Culture: Rituals "Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality" S5 Bonus

Back in season 4 we did a series called Christian Cancel Culture, where we discussed the ways Fundamentalist expressions of Christianity attempt to discredit any practices and concepts they deem Unchristian. On July 5, 2021 we released the Christian Cancel Culture episode on Rituals, because we recognize that church folk really really struggle with other Jesus-followers practicing seemingly non-christian rituals like the burning of sage, or the use of crystals, tarot cards, palm readings, yoga, etc…

Well, today we are inviting you to the after-party of the Rituals episode where we went as far as addressing Child Sacrifice as a ritual with our Patreon community, who joined us in the live virtual audience of this recording.

Welcome to Postseason 5 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. I’m Kristian A. Smith, the host and the Heretic of Holy Smokes. The pastor of The Faith Community and the author of Breaking All The Rules. During the Postseason we bring you content you either haven't heard before or you haven't heard in ages. Today you're getting content you haven't heard before.

Remember this episode invites you into the behind the scenes discussion we had after the official episode ended. We're going to pick up toward the end of this episode where Tierney AT&T Jordan shares her thoughts on Sage. You will hear me end the official episode like I always do, which marks the beginning of the After Party where Myron The Mystic gets really churchy by reminding us we don't have a "Patent on the Power." Trust me, that line will make perfect sense after you hear him break it down.

So here it is, the after party of Christian Cancel Culture: Rituals from Season 4 of Holy Smokes: Cigars and Spirituality where we are deconstructing harmful theology and creating beloved community one cigar at a time. So, let's get to it!
