Conversations: Jennifer Carole the Lawyer's Daughter
Jennifer Carole is an "Energy Life Coach and experienced marketing professional from Silicon Valley" whose life was forever altered by the rape and murder of her stepmom and the murder of her father in 1980. In recent years (2018) Joseph DeAngelo, who is now known to be the Golden State Killer, was arrested for this crime and dozens of other rapes, murders and burglaries throughout California in the late 1970s. Mansplaining - Men do it to each other too!
At a recent meeting Hugo made a point. Then a second later another man thought they knew how to better explain things and men their own effort. Hugo goes on to explain how this Mansplaining incident resonated with him as perpetrator and victim of this action.  Today on the Show: Mansplaining: Urban Dictionary definition "A man whom by virtue of the authority and privilege vested in him by society feels entitled to preach or explain how the world works. Bonus, if he is speaking to women, whom he perceives to be naive and ignorant, about problems and concerns with which women have real life every day experience, and the man has NO fucking clue what he is talking about. Ass-Umptions: Hugo didn't get the benefit of the doubt in a traffic situation.
Hugo got stuck in traffic recently whilst in a hurry to an errand. After getting an answer from the person who caused the traffic jam he tried to help other motorists deal with the situation. Some of the responses were not as polite as possible and that didn't sit will with our protagonist. Hugo now tells us about the importance of giving people the benefit of the doubt. Today on the Show: “BLACK ROBBERS”? (A True Story) For anyone who didn’t see the episode of David Letterman’s show where this story was told, read this and remember it’s a true story. On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. I’ll be right back and we’ll go to eat’ she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were Black. One of them was very tall and had an intimidating figure. The woman froze. Her first thought was; “These two are going to rob me.” Her next thought was; “Don’t be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice gentleman.” But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her. Avoiding eye contact, she got in, turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn’t move. “My God” she thought, I’m trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore. Then one of the men said, “Hit the floor.” Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her. “Take my money and spare me”, she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, Ma’am, if you’ll just tell us what floor you’re going to, we’ll push the button.” The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet, “When I told my friend here to hit the floor”, said the average sized one, “I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor.” I didn’t mean for you to hit the floor, Ma’am.” He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. The woman thought; “My God, what a spectacle I’ve made of myself.” She was humiliated to speak. The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters an refilled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her good evening. As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband. The next morning flowers were delivered to her room; a dozen roses. Attached to EACH ROSE WAS A CRISP ONE-HUNDRED-DOLLAR BILL! The card said: “Thanks for the best laugh we’ve had in years.” It was signed: Eddie Murphy and Michael Jordan." Listen Closely - Everyone is talking but are we listening to one another?
While cleaning out his garage Hugo found an old poem his High School teacher assigned in the last days of Senior year. It made little sense to him then but twenty years later he's lived a life and the puzzle pieces are starting to make sense. Hugo reads the poem and shares his thoughts on the importance of listening to the wisdom of elders and why we need to truly listen to each other more. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.  Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.  Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.  Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. No Pain, No Pain - Hugo has been on the ropes lately...can he fight back?
 Hugo has had a terrible cold over the last week. Unable to really talk but needed to for work and more he's faced a few battles this week. Even though he's only 5'7" our Podcast host is a scrappy fella with some tricks up his sleeves. He shares his...will you be kind enough to share yours? Rear view MIrror - Hugo tells you why he has been on hiatus and the importance of looking back every now and then.

Light & Magic - Hugo goes to a live Hollywood taping and shares a few lessons with his children.
