INAV Fixed Wing Group: Wing Talk

Our guest today is TrueRC Canada's Hugo Chamberland. We will talk about Antennas, how they work, what makes good antennas and what to be aware of when using them. This has been one of the best Wing Talks if you're interested in nerdy discussions. This really is one not to miss!

INAV 6 is out for a few weeks now but the development never stops. We talk about the current work that is done for INAV 6.1 and what new things to expect. We also have an announcement for the group and some changes that will come right after Wing Talk.

In our February Show, we have Adam Maas as our special Guest. Together we will talk about Control Links. What Systems are out there? What ranges to expect? Why is Physics our Enemy? We will also talk about the current state of the INAV 6 development and the Release Candidates.

In this show we will talk about the latest FPV News and the current Progress of INAV 6.0. Tim Stanfield will join us again as a guest and together we will discuss what 2023 might bring to us for the Fixed Wing FPV Hobby.

Time goes by... It is now 4 years since the INAV Fixed Wing Group was created by Steve Schlesinger. What started as a little group of some enthusiastic Fixed Wing Pilots trying out INAV and some newcomers who needed help, developed into one of the largest FPV Fixed wing communities on Facebook, with the focus purely on INAV controlled aircraft. At the same time, we celebrate our 3rd full year of Wing Talk, together with our Grumpy Old Nerd Henrik. We want to discuss the FPV year 2022, that had some amazing developments going on and at its peak, shows us how INAV will finally grow up to a very serious UAV control System, with the biggest release ever just around the corner: INAV 6!

This Wing Talk we have Tim Stanfield back in the show; talking about the passion and the future of FPV. Also INAV 5.0 is just a few days away from the final release and it is time to talk about it more deeply and show you all, what has changed.

Wing Talk this Sunday: KO motors is the top-tier premium motor manufacture that is a frequent topic of discussion in the Drak community. They have something for the Mini Drak and are working on something for the Nano Drak crowd. We'll get into what other planes these motors would make sense to put on. Lloyd Southam is an INAV fanatic! We won't tip his hand, but some of the things he is working on are things you'll want to know about. He's also very excited to be on the panel to be speaking with Christopher from KO motors.

Unfortunately Christopher did not make the show.

We are very excited to have Lee from Painless 360 returning to have another chat with us. We want to give you an opportunity to ask questions. Usually , Lee is such a great conversationalist that all we have to do is hit the record button and let him go. But this time, we have a topic that has come up of the last day that needs further addressing. We might just have a little something to say.

This month we're spotlighting two members who have been in the group for a very long time. Samantha Collins was the first women to join the group. She had her ups and downs. This is going to be a very fun interview with her. Let's just say, it will be unlike anything we've ever done before. Marco Cruise is another long time member. You'll find him along the coast in Florida having a great time.

Both guests have a lot to say. And they've had their challenges working with INAV. Are things getting better? Marc Hoffmann is going to go over, in simplified terms what it takes to get to autotune in INAV 3 and INAV 4. We'll also be going of tools, tips and tricks to help make your INAV journey a bit more enjoyable.

Whatcha flying in 2022?

This is our annual plane survey show. This year we asked "What will you be flying in 2022" to the INAV Fixed Wing Group members on Facebook.  The top 20 planes had over 1100 votes. Aside from the planes, there is a larger story about where the hobby is going and what our interests are.  With the update of INAV 4.0 many planes that weren't good fits for INAV are suddenly viable.

This is an exciting time to be thinking about what we'll be flying this year and what is possible. Clearly the first 5 planes on the list are well entrenched in our hobby, but the real story are the other planes that don't always get the exposure they deserve. Are there some dark horses, or diamonds in the rough on the list? What didn't make the list but really should have? This show in particular tends to have people write in and thank us for something that is interesting and informative.

Welcome to 2022, the best flying year ever. Let's kick it off right!

Time flies! The INAV Fixed Wing Group nears it's third anniversary. This Sunday Lee Schofield will be with us; most of you might know him better by his alias Painless360.

During the Show you will get some insight in Lee's background and we will discuss many more topics. What are Lee's favourite planes? What does Lee think about the regulations happening around the world in the hobby? Is RC really cheaper than class A drugs and hookers? 

Tim Stanfield, President Ready Made RC is a guest we’re super excited to have. This is going to be a past, present and future show.

• Past: 2000-2010- Brushless motors, 2.4ghz, first FPV 2010-2020 flight controllers, 2.4ghz, drones, race quads, 900mhz, Eagle Tree Vector, CleanFlght, BetaFlight and the birth of INAV.
• Present day: Death of Eagle Tree, HD video, TX wars, FAA woes, trade wars, pandemic, supply chain issues, manufacturing issues, the rise of INAV Fixed Wing.
• Future: What’s on the horizon? What should we work on today? What does Tim see as viable trends that he will bet on?

We will also talk about ReadyMade RC. Keep in mind they not only sell planes, but quads and all the parts associated with them. Thus, he works with all the vendors and can give us a fantastic overview from a perspective of being in the know.

As summer ends next week for the vast majority of us, we get the panel together to discuss the summer of INAV. INAV 3.0 rolled out just in time for summer, then, 3.01 and now 3.02 sneaking in just under the wire. How was it received, and is there still room for improvement?

We’re also now starting to see new planes coming out on a fairly regular basis. Interesting new designs, as well as well-covered ground like twin-motor tractor fed planes. What stands out? There certainly seems to be more of a coolness factor for FPV planes, but do they fly well?

Oh sure, we’ll talk about the ZOHD Alpha Strike. We’re very excited to hear Marc’s review. BTW, someone answered the question about his level of experience with INAV on the FB group screening question as “I have my RTH set at 30 meters instead of 30 centimetres, so I guess that pretty much makes me an INAV expert.” And that’s the thing you have to love about the hobby. Sometimes good things go south.

Active group member Crunklefloop will join us for a lively INAV chat. It’s the perfect way to end the weekend. Maybe you’ll get some ideas for winter projects.

When you’ve been flying INAV for a while, and want to move into custom foam. The plane that always comes up is the Mini Drak. And yet, there are other wonderful Draks such as the Nano Drak and the full size Drak if you dare. The Mini Draks have been out of stock for quite some time and thus a lot of people want to know how to get their hands on one.

Here’s the Wing Talk you’ve been waiting for. By now you understand that INAV 3.0 works great. But, are there things you can still do to improve its performance? Where is INAV going next?

This Q&A format allows us to get to topics that the members care about. Best of all, Paweł is a great guest, very lively and personable. It's been over a year since we last sat down together to discuss INAV. A lot of water has gone under the bridge in that period of time. We’ll cover where we came from and perhaps get a glimpse of the future. This is going to be a fun and lively conversation!

INAV 3.0 is a go! So, does INAV 3.0 work? Yes, it works well. Can I trust INAV 3.0? Yes, yes you can. What are the hot tips for getting INAV 3.0 setup well. You're gonna have to tune in for that!

In the first hour it's all about INAV 3.0, and we'll slow down Marc so that a few of the points that are somewhat obscure will be more clear, such as how Auto level works and how to properly use it in your autotune. Oh yeah, there will be clarity. Marc Hoffmann will be your personal Sherpa as we breach the summit of Mt. INAV.

Our special guest will be Warren G's British cousin Rory G. Let's not get him confused with Adam G. No, they aren't related. Only by the INAV bond. Rory will be swinging that, flinging that G thang! If you haven't seen Rory's posts lately. he was playing with an FrSky 12S doing all sorts of crazy things with it, then he maidened a Mini Drak last week with INAV 3.0. So yeah, lots to talk about. For the record it will be three Brits, and a German and American for bookends. We're living up to the goal of having a good time, all the time. This episode we get well into the topic of radios. What works with INAV? Will your old Futaba work with INAV? How about your Spektrum gear? We'll get into a good overview of everything that's going on with radios. Including OpenTX, TBS Crossfire and the ever so hot topic of FrSky.

But wait, there's more! ExpressLRS will be discussed as well. And we'll go over any last minute changes before INAV 3.0 will be launched as a release candidate. Marc will go over the what you'll need to do differently to get your plane flying as best as possible. This will be the first live episode with just the four of us and no guests in about a year. By now, we're used to each other so this will be a fun and lively chat.

Paweł Spychalski has just laid out what to expect in INAV 3.0. There is more than we previously knew about. One thing that is perfectly clear that you will have to get ready for is that you CANNOT copy and paste over your diff files. There is a reason why it's 3.0. There is a quantum leap on some of the settings, and you'll need a fresh start.

Perhaps you have flight controllers buried in some of your planes and you'll want to know if the extra time required to dig into the plane to get them out and starting over is worth it? The good news is nobody is making you do this. If you're happy with the way your plane flies now, you can stick with pre-3.0 for as long as you like.

But, INAV 3.0 is a dangling carrot. It's a carrot that is getting larger and more appetizing as we get closer to the release candidate. You probably need to start making some decisions and formulating some strategies about how to proceed. We'll break it down for you in this five panellist show.

We also have Henrik as our special guest. He's a member of the group, has been for quite a while. He has a lot of ideas and opinions, and is a very good conversationalist. This is going to be a more of a free flowing show where the panellists are talking.

We'll also talk about Rosetta Stone and how Darren got duped by Steve and ended up writing half the introduction to FrSky protocol manual.

In the first hour we'll have a chat with long time member Christian Moe Fagerhus and moderator Steven Lydon. We'll go over the framework of Project Rosetta Stone. In the second hour it's our group chat. Marc Hoffmann will share some important INAV updates showing up in the next version and we'll have a lively chat to end the week. Please join us.

INAV 2.7 will be a game changer. It will have some of the most exciting updates to INAV in the last couple of years. Instead of getting bits and pieces of the story Marc Hoffman will help break it down. Please include questions/comments in the live stream.

We'll also be going over how to get your ideas for features on the radar of INAV developers, and talk about the pros/cons of sharing PIDS and Diff files. Our special guest Andrew Bolton will give us the scoop about life on the funny farm plus go over some of his interesting builds.

We’re reviewing the top 21 planes as selected by the INAV Fixed Wing Group. Between all the panellists, we’ve owned, flown and crashed most of them. Special guests Josh Gault and Nikolai Bockholt. This will be a panellist show which means no interviews, just topics and fun discussions.

So, Marc Hoffmann has something very killer to share on Wing Talk. He's beyond sworn to secrecy about it. There are German sharpshooters outside his apartment 24/7 ready to shoot should he breath a word about it. The poor guy is chain vaping nonstop. What is it?

Darren Lines has something that he shared with me a few weeks ago. And I took it out and I tried it and didn't care for it. Then he said "Okay" and did some changes. Now I FREAKING LOVE IT! I am going through updating INAV to 2.6 on all my planes and doing a paradigm shift because of it. You're going to want to find out all about it.

I have an idea for a project that would make it easier to help people select future projects. We do have guests so I will mention something about but most of what I will have to share will be in a message after the show.

For 88% of the worlds' population we're in winter. But Australia is just getting into summer. So, we'll find out what he's going to be flying this season. Adam G will be on winter holiday, so he can stay up late and play with us. He's in the part of the world where it's certainly winter so we'll find out what he's got on the bench.
