Choosing Happiness After a Rough Start - Jerry Dugan Episode 35
Jerry Dugan says he is one of the most annoyingly happy people you will ever meet, yet he grew up in a broken home, saw his dad attempt suicide, experienced combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and almost lost his home multiple times during the 2007 Recession.  He believes mindset is everything and it’s how we react to life’s circumstances that makes all the difference. Jerry is the co-host of Beyond the Rut podcast and like me, his hope is to inspire people to live a happier life.  He lives in Corpus Christi, Texas with his wife of seventeen years, Olivia, and their two teenagers, Jacob and Emma. Disclaimer -  Some things in this episode may be difficult to listen to such as Jerry's personal account of witnessing his dad attempt suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling in the U.S. the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7. Ocean Therapy for Foster Youth is Working- Ep 12, Craig Jenkins with Urban Surf 4 Kids
Craig has been apart of Urban Surf 4 Kids(US4K) since the summer of 2012 where he worked with the founder, Wesley Stewart, on creating a comprehensive Surf Therapy program to support Foster and At-Risk youth who are overcoming PTSD, physical, and emotional trauma. He is a full-time volunteer staff member at US4K by day and a full-time Federal Agent for Homeland Security by night. Working with the amazing kids and volunteers of this organization has been the most rewarding experience in his life. Urban Surf 4 Kids (US4K) was created to empower foster and at-risk youth through surf therapy and community service based mentoring programs. It's more than an organization, it's a family, an "Ohana." The support system that they need. Many of the foster youth in the program had never been in the ocean before despite living near the beach! US4K even takes a group of 15 to Hawaii each year! Most have never even been to an airport let alone on a dream vacation. Foster children are nearly twice as likely to suffer from PTSD as United States war veterans, according to a study conducted by The Harvard Medical School. The risk of homelessness for teens leaving foster care is extreme, as many as 25% becoming homeless within 18 months of leaving the system. Nearly one-third of boys who lived in foster care will go to jail before they reach age 19; foster girls are more than twice as likely to get pregnant as non-fostered teenagers. Additionally, 50% of all foster children will never receive a high school diploma or GED.
