Exodus 21:1-11 Bible Study - The Book of the Covenant - Slavery in the Bible

Exodus 21:1-11 Bible Study - The Book of the Covenant - Slavery in the Bible

What does the Bible say about Slavery?  This week we look at Exodus 21:1-11 which holds the ordinances for the Israelites on how to deal with their Hebrew slaves (Jews that were slaves within the Jewish camp).  To better understand what the Bible has to say on the subject we additionally look at Leviticus 25:39-43 and Deuteronomy 15:12-18.

Slavery was a common practice of all people groups in Moses' day as well as in Jesus’ day.  In this study, we look at what Jesus has to say to us in how we treat one another and how we ought to serve Him, as a bondslave, a slave by choice.

The Bible is not a political book, it tells God’s people how they ought to interact with each other and with Him.  That call is clear, regardless of our station in life, we are to put God first in everything and lift up everyone around us higher than ourselves.  Slave or free we are to work for everyone as working for the Lord, and lift others above ourselves.

Exodus 17 Bible Study, The struck Rock of Horeb and Israel's Battle with the Amalekites

Exodus 17 Bible Study, The struck Rock of Horeb and Israel's Battle with the Amalekites

This study we cover Exodus 17 in which we see Israel move from the desert of sin to Rephidim where they once again are without water. Rather then seeking the Lord the Israelites complain and quarrel with Moses, ready to stone him. Despite this God provides through the struck rock of Horeb (what is that a picture of?). We then study the story of Israel's battle with the Amalekites.

Outline: 01:36 - overview and background of Exodus 17 03:17 - Exodus 17.1-7 04:43 - Ex 17.1-7 Where is this? Desert of Sin, Rephidim, Horeb, Massah & Meribah. 07:23 - Israel was led by a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. Exodus 14 Bible Study, The Parting of the Red Sea; God will be Glorified!

Israel has left Egypt, but rather than going the direct route to the promised land, God leads them south (to avoid the Philistines). God hardens Pharaoh’s heart, yet again, and he pursues Israel, trapping them at the banks of the Red Sea. God steps in and we see the supernatural parting of the Red Sea (we discuss the different potential locations where this happened and the implications of each). God will be glorified, what does that mean and why is this important? Exodus 10 Bible Study, God unleashes a plague of locusts and plunges Egypt into darkness

Exodus 10 Bible Study, God unleashes a plague of locusts and plunges Egypt into darkness

In Exodus 10 we see plagues 8 and 9 unleashed on Pharaoh and on Egypt. Plague 8 is the plague of locusts which decimate any remaining living vegetation in the land of Egypt.  The 9th plague is the plague of darkness which engulfs Egypt in 3 days of darkness you can feel.  God sets Goshen apart (the land where the Israelites live), providing them with light.  Pharaoh’s heart is hardened by God to ensure His plan for Egypt and Israel unfolds (Exodus 10.1-3).

Outline:

01:21 - Exodus 10.1-20 - Plague 8 - Locusts

05:11 - Exodus 10.1-2 - The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart.  “So that I may perform these signs… and you may know that I am the Lord.”

Exodus 10.2 - Reference to Generations.  What happens in Egypt is meant to be shared.

06:52 - who is God to manipulate Pharaoh’s heart?

Revelation 16 - “true and just are your judgments” -

Romans 3.23 - we have all fallen short, we have all sinned.

Romans 6.23 - the wages of sin are death.

We are all guilty and deserve death.  A dark opening, but there is a bright finish today!

10:30 - Locusts - overview, what are locusts?  Why do they swarm?

11:52 - Three (of many) major locust swarms in world history

11:57 - Albert’s Swarm - 1875 Midwest-western locust swarm

13:12 - 1915 Ottoman Syria locust infestation

14:12 - 2019-2022 - East Africa Locust Infestation

15:11 - Joel 1.6-12 - a vivid picture of a locust swarm

18:48 - Exodus 10.13 - East wind & west wind (the locusts likely came from the Arabian peninsula)

20:22 - Exodus 10.7 - Pharaoh’s Officials plead with him, “Egypt is ruined”

21:17 - Exodus 10.8-11 - Pharaoh is the swindler, the negotiator.  Compare this verse in different translations

26:08 - Exodus 10.11 - Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.

26:19 - Exodus 10.16 - “I have sinned - take this deadly plague away”

27:26 - Egyptian gods being challenged through the plagues

of Locusts (Nut, Osiris & Set)

28:41 - Exodus 10.21-29

31:20 - The Plague of Darkness

Genesis 1.1-3.  God takes away the light of His creation

33:12 - What Egyptian god is attacked by taking away the sun?

Ra the Egyptian sun god - a plague of darkness is an attack on Ra

An attack on Ra is an attack on the Egyptian pantheon of Gods and on Pharaoh.

36:50 - Exodus 10.24 - Pharaoh is always the negotiator.

38:28 - Exodus 10.27-29 - Pharaoh sends Moses away with a warning.

39:48 - Context is key!

Exodus 6 Bible Study, “why have you brought trouble on this people?” Moses asked God.

In Exodus chapter 6 God answers Moses' question at the end of chapter 5, “why have you brought trouble on this people?” God answers Moses with a recap of what he is going to do in the coming chapters of Exodus. Verses 13-30 of Exodus chapter 6 include a genealogy which traces from Jacob through his eldest three sons down to Moses and Aaron and ends at Aaron’s grandson Phinehas. This genealogy, though somewhat random, does have a purpose. God is sovereign and has a plan, from the beginning of time, until the end, God has a plan and is orchestrating it one step at a time. Outline: 1:08 - Recap Exodus 3-5 4:11 - Exodus 5.21-22 5:20 - John 16:33 - in this life you will have trouble… 6:25 - Overview 7:07 - Exodus 6.1-12 09:04 - Exodus 6.1-12 Recap 09:37 - Exodus 6.3 - “but by my name the LORD I did not make myself fully known to them.” Progressive Revelation, we learn more about God through his progressive revelation to us through the Bible, through time. Exodus 4:18-5:23 Bible Study - "Who is the Lord?" - Pharaoh asks Moses.

Exodus 4:18-5:23 Bible Study - "Who is the Lord?" - Pharaoh asks Moses.

In this study, we cover Exodus 4:18 through the end of chapter 5.  In this time we see Moses, after being given his assignment from God, travel with his wife and two sons to Egypt to present God’s plan to the Israelites there.  In Egypt, the elders (leadership) of the Hebrews listen to Moses and Aaron (Moses Brother) and they believe him and worship God for remembering them and coming to save them from Pharaoh’s harsh enslavement.  Exodus chapter 5 brings us to Moses and Aaron’s first encounter and request before Pharaoh.  Pharaoh, listens to their request to release the Israelites, but questions “Who is the Lord?”  In Egypt, Pharaoh is considered to be part god himself; Pharaoh does not recognize the Hebrew God, nor will he release his free arsenal of manual labor to this God of the Israelites.  Pharaoh refuses and as punishment increases the workload on the Hebrew slaves.  To which the Israelites return to Moses complaining, “What have you done to us!”  To which Moses returned to God asking Him why he had not followed through with what He had promised Moses.

Outline:

2:29 - Exodus 4.18-23

3:51 - Exodus 4.18 - why does Moses not tell Jethro the full story?

5:50 -  Exodus 4.19 - all those who wanted to kill you are dead.

7:11 - Exodus 4.20 - “he took the staff of God in his hand.”

8:52 - Exodus 4.21-23 - an outline and foreshadowing of what is going to happen in Egypt.

10:17 - Exodus 4.22 - “Israel is my firstborn son.”  The birthright blessing.  The Hebrews, the Israelites, the Jews are God’s chosen people, his firstborn son.  We “the Church” are grafted into the blessings of Israel, but we have not, by any means, replaced the Jews.  For more on this read Hosea 11.

In this month's Apostle Talk interview, Dave Bigler talks with PhD professor, Academic, Apologist and Pastor, Dr. Joe Slunaker.  "Joe" has many different titles but they all seem to revolve around a love for Jesus and the Hebrew Bible; the Old Testament of the Christian Bible.  In this interview you will hear Joe's background story, what led him to where he is today.  This is followed by some in depth questions, Why study the Old Testament?  Is it as important as the New Testament and the red letters of Jesus?  Joe hits on some hard questions: how does the death of one man erase the sins of many?  What is the logic behind the "food laws" of Leviticus?  Join us as we hear the story of God working in the life of Dr. Joe Slunaker.

This week we also look at the question of divination in the bible.  This word is used twice in Genesis 44, we discuss what divination is and what God thinks of it.
