Is It Camp?!
By Is it Camp?!
We are diving into popular culture of all kinds to loosely identify what makes something camp. We are not here to be the definitive experts on it, but rather just talk about this often overlooked, and frankly queer, subgenre. It's not just movies, but TV, literature, and pop culture of all kinds.

This episode: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
The game screen is up. The die have been cast. Character sheets are filled in. And Riley Silverman has once more graced our pod to act as DM to our two Camp Counsellors in a bespoke adventure called This Episode. We start our adventure in a theatre, as the lights dim, and projected onto the screen is Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. The crowd goes wild, our heroes clap, and then they must roll for initiative.

Episode 143: Is It Dyan Cannon (Kate's Version)?
This episode: The Last of Sheila
The Camp Counsellors have been invited on a week long getaway to a fabulous dirigible, owned by one Horrible Puppet Robin. Somehow they're a multi-Millionaire and can afford the luxury Of a dirigible and the game of intrigue that will be played within its lofty confines. But what if the game were interrupted by a MURDER?! Or several. Who, what, where, why, and how done it? that's Why we are sitting down to watch The Last of Sheila to shed some light on how to solve it.
How do you politely explain to someone how bisexuality works? Who's the standout star of this film? And what's one plot sticking point that really clangs against the fun of this film?

Episode 142: Is It Vamp?
This episode: Vamp
The Is It Camp Palace is throwing a raging mixer, so Sam and Sarah have to find the entertainment for the night. But it's so last minute, and they have to drag Horrible Puppet Robin along with them. Good news is, they have a car. Bad news is they won't be in this episode because there's nothing in the script for them. So the three are going to the seediest strip joint in town, because where else would you go for last minute entertainment? And in order to prepare themselves for negotiations, the crew is watching the 1986 Grace Jones vampire film Vamp!

Episode 141: Is It Barry Manilow's Theme to The Avengers?
This episode: Valley of the Dolls
In order to reach the heights of Everest, one must make your way through the Valley of the Dolls. But before that you gotta make Base Camp, and that's where you'll find Camp Counsellors Sam and Sarah waiting and ready with snacks, and orange slices for the hard journey ahead. They definitely do not have drugs. Absolutely not. Because that Valley is full of em! And in order to warn any travellers of the perils ahead, our Counsellors have prepared a 2 hour educational video on it called, surprisingly enough, The Valley of the Dolls!
Which of the three plot lines do we think got short shrift? if we did a remake of the film, who would we cast? And the filmmaker was gonna make Judy Garland do what?!
So come along on an episode that is definitely shorter than the withdrawal symptoms.

Episode 139: Is It Surf 'n' Birth?
Sam and Sarah find themselves on an epic quest to retrieve a lost Silent Era film, that of a monkey running for president. Rumors abound that it can be found to the north of the Is It Camp Palace grounds. Where to the north? Ehn…. Somewhere. But along the way they might find so much more than that, perhaps even… lust. Not with each other though, no. So to prepare for this quest they're going to watch the sword and sandals historical drama The Eagle.
What's the perfect name for the bad guys we only discover near the end of the film? What does this film have to say about colonization? And has there ever been sexual chemistry like these two leads have?

Episode 138: Is It Batman in the Eye of the Beholder?
This episode: The Batman '66 TV show
Capers abound as our Camp Counsellors consult Caped Crusaders carefully counterattacking conniving Catwomen! Alliteration! The Is It Camp Palace is beset by arch-fiends of all shapes, sizes, and celebrity status, and our Dynamic Duo of Sam and Sarah must slide down the pole of Justice and deliver a *BIFF* a *POP* and a *KAZOO*! But they can't do it alone, so they enlist the help of comics writer Jadzia Axelrod, as they take in the 1966 Batman TV show!

We're back, you bastards. After a very brief period of being gone from the Is It Camp Palace, Counsellors Sam and Sarah arrived via Venga-Bus at midnight, to enact revenge upon those who wronged them. We are continuing the vengeance list from our previous episode, as well as figuring out what the event that happened here 25 years ago was… And in order to do so, we are watching the hit Australian film The Dressmaker.

Episode 136: Is It A Bond Minus Bond?
This episode: Double Down (2005)
Sam and Sarah are two of the art of camp's most covert practitioners. Both trained in the art of jiu-jitsu, papier-maché, axe throwing, and interpretive dance. They can control legions of fighter jets from their cellphones, and have one highly trained non-binary Horrible Puppet at their disposal. All the governments of the world want them dead, and simultaneously hired to do things. Because they are so damn good at everything. Where did they learn all this? From a little film called Double Down.

This episode: It Happened One Night
It's Counsellor Sarah's birthday, and as the prophecies dictate, she must CHOOSE HER OWN ADVENTURE. And this year she has chosen to do an Eastern seaboard road trip from Miami to New York? By bus?! What kind of cockamamie idea is this? So she's bringing along her two favourite palookas, Sam and Esteemed Editor Warren on this cross country escapade. To prepare them for the journey she has dictated that they shall be watching It Happened One Night.

Episode 134: Is It Yakuza tnecreP?
This episode: Kill Bill Vol. 1
Sarah had just woken up in the Hospital Wing of the Is It Camp Palace, after being in a coma for 8 hours. We call it sleep, but she swears it was a coma. And now she's assembled a list for revenge upon petty grievances. She's working her way towards Sam, but first we get an extended backstory for returning guest host Leah! Sarah has chosen to prepare herself for this by watching Kill Bill Vol. 1, and spending 6 months under the tutelage of one Quentin Tarantino.

Episode 132: Is It Where Did He Get That Hay?
Counsellors Sam and Sarah have decided to enter a new phase of their relationship, a more intimate one, for week three of *Romance Month*. That's right, they're going to share family recipes, and in order to facilitate this transaction, they've invited special guest star Bee to help serve as intimacy co-ordinator, because consent is always sexy. And she's wheeling in a big TV and dvd player, like in grade school, so they can all watch Secretary.

Episode 131: Is It Dian Fossey's Jazz Hands?
This episode: My Man Godfrey (1936)
Some rich ne'er-do-wells have made their way onto the Palace grounds in an effort to win a scavenger hunt, and the last item on their list: “human dignity”. But Sam and Sarah are having none of this bullshit, especially on week 2 of *Romance Month*. That is, until Horrible Puppet Robin gets taken away and becomes not just their prize but also the rich assholes' new butler! But that's not part of their job description! So Sam and Sarah decide to hatch a plan to rescue them, and in order to do so, they're watching 1936's My Man Godfrey.

This episode: The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Welcome to week on of *Romance Month* and we've decided to fling open the doors of the Is It Camp Palace for some sexy sex! We've invited one blonde, one brunette, one red head, and Satan himself. We love a polycule, and really can't see any problems in the future, other than Veronica Cartwright going on about bad stuff outside. So we're all going to sit down and watch The Witches of Eastwick.

Episode 129: Is It An Intricate Network of Bookies and Lesbians?
This episode: Relax, I'm From the Future
The scene: the Is It Camp Palace. The time: 3:53pm. Suddenly a flash of electricity, and from a portal step out two people clad entirely in polyester. Why, it's the future versions of Counsellors Sam and Sarah, and they've come back in time to just… Dick around. Not save the future or change the course of mankind, just kind of eat snacks and a chill out. So they've decided to take in a new film, Relax, I'm From The Future! They even managed to get an interview with the film's director!

Episode 128: Is It "Help Me Out Of This Washing Machine, Cary Grant!"?
This episode: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
It was 3pm on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and into the offices of Is It Camp Private Eye he walked. Sam was 5'11, hair as red as a panda, and shoulders wider than the doorframe. Gumshoe Sarah knew this was the bad start to a worse mystery, but dammit, a mystery was always her weakness. Upon entering, he immediately fainted, and uttered one phrase: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. So Sarah looked it up online and wouldn't you know it's the name of a film!

Good news Campers! Sarah has decided to dedicate all her energy into the cutthroat pursuit of launching Is It Camp to new levels of success. She's marrying up, making international business deals, and hiring Al Pacino to give motivational “Hooahs!” throughout the day. And all this because she watched Ridley Scott's House of Gucci. Episode 126: Is It A Pair of Tiny 6 Foot Tall Women?
New Year. Same Camp Counsellors. Except this time, as we emerge from our Camp Cocoons (not in a geriatric way), we also plan on devastating not one, but two major cities along the way! No one will dare to try and stop us, and surely our rampage hasn't been brought on by the kidnapping of our favourite Horrible Puppet. The United militaries of the world stand in our path, so we turn our attention to the original bad bitch of Kaijus, Mothra.

This episode: Rocky IV
This last year Counsellor Sam has been going on an awful lot about his training for a bodybuilding show, and finally in week 3 of *Holiday Month* he's not the only one doing the training. Sarah is going to avenge the death of her best friend by fighting another person. Perhaps to the death! In Vancouver (tick off that bingo square)! But can vengeance alone fuel her rage, and get her yoked enough to kill a man, or do we need love and heart too? To help us out, we've decided to watch the classic Christmas movie, Rocky IV.

Well this may not have been the property to watch for it, unfortunately, as Counsellor Sam has programmed the animated Adam Sandler movie, Eight Crazy Nights.

We'd tell you what gifts they're giving, but that's getting ahead of ourselves. But how do we get into the Holiday Mood? How do we get them out of this before Sarah loses the pink slips to the CampMobile, and Sam rewatches all of Chobits? We are going to sit down and watch the classic musical Grease.

Episode 118: Is It Stupid Sexy Cylons?
This episode: Space Trash by Jenn Woodall
The setting: space. The time: the far flung future. We were told that the planet had become drastically un-camp. The people dug too deeply and greedily and deprived the Earth of its Camp resources, so the majority of the population went to space to find new Camp resources. But on a single colony on the moon, a couple of Camp Counsellors are certain that perhaps the situation on Earth may not be as dire as we thought. Maybe there's still some Camp left…
So, in order to prepare themselves, the Counsellors are reading Jenn Woodall's graphic novel Space Trash!
What 90s tech do the teachers remind Sarah of? Is Bull Nakano real? And can we keep the tone light despite the fact that the world seems to be heading in the direction of the book? I'm not panicking!

Episode 117: Is It Ottawa: Technically Beautiful?
This episode: The Women (1939)
There's been a chromatic accident at the Is It Camp Palace, and now everything in black and white! Our Counsellors have also developed the unfortunate side effect of talking faster, and Sam can't even be seen by Sarah, so she has to run the whole show while he literally phones his role in. But Sarah has come across some big juicy gossip that she heard through Robin, who heard it from the groundskeeper, who in turn got it from their dentist, and it's all about Sam! How should Sarah handed this new info? Well, she can start by watching 1939's The Women and see how gossip works there!
What are terrible slogans for cities? Why are all these divorced women on a train for Reno? And will Sarah get a chance to read some dialogue this episode?

So before they head out on their trip, they enlist the help of returning guest Lady Bearica, who knows a thing or two about doomed voyages, by making the Counsellors watch Final Destination.

So to prepare our Counsellors for the inevitable backlash, we've made them watch the infamous mockumentary Ghostwatch.

After several failed attempts at canceling the show by the powers that be (fuck you Bezos!) The Counsellors have discovered a means of keeping the Podcast going INDEFINITELY. With a magic potion that will grant them eternal life and youth. The problem is they will be stuck with each other…. Forever…. But that's fine. They get a long so well.
So in order to prepare for eternity together, Sam and Sarah have decided to sit down and watch the Robert Zemeckis flop Death Becomes Her.

Episode 112: Is It The Master As Played By Alex Mack?
The studio execs have decided to reboot Is It Camp for a new and sexy young audience. Sarah is being replaced by a girl from a failed CW pilot who also has a barely existent singing career, and Sam will be killed off on-screen to be replaced by Russel Tovey. The horror! His arms aren't even as big as Sam's! Thankfully, the Counsellors have been hired as the writers for the new direction, and they're going to tank it! And to do that they'll learn all the best lessons from the 1996 tv movie reboot of Doctor Who.
How fast can the Counsellors catch the audience up on Doctor Who? What do they think of Eric Roberts' Master? And how long can a university student go without sunlight?

Episode 111: Is It A Clone of Michael Douglas?
This episode: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Years ago, there was a terrible accident at the entrance to the Is It Camp Palace, and the rumor is that Sam was horribly disfigured by Sarah, and now she has to take care of him. It involved five chickens and a bouncy castle, and now they're old and decrepit and at each other's throats. But to better understand this folie à deux the Counsellors ask that you watch What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?
Was there a feud between Joan Fontaine and Bette Davis? What scene did Sarah have to close her eyes at? And is that a Batmam villain?

Episode 110: Is It Feud Season 2: The Human Cannonball?
This episode: Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar
Oh my goodness Campers. You know what, we don't really cover films about middle-aged women from Nebraska, no sir. Well let's fix that right now! Sam & Sarah are heading on a vacation to the most glamorous place in all of Canada: the Edmonton Mall. Oh wow, its like a shopping paradise, and you know, you just don't hear enough about it. You can buy so many things there, it's adventures every day! So to prepare, the Counsellors have decided to watch Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar, to get the best out of their wildly exciting vacation.
Is Sam going to do a sustained accent? How good is Jamie Dornan's song? And who the fuck is Trish?

Episode 109: Is It An Immortal Cat?
This episode: Glitter
Nope. We've done this too many times now. At least once a year the Camp Counsellors try to start a band and make it big, and frankly it's becoming old hat. They start out, gain some momentum, start to make it big, dark night of soul, reconciliation, life is better than ever, the end. It's been done so much that even Mariah Carey got in on this plot. So that's why we're watching her film Glitter.
How much time is passing in this film? Why does Sam hate what Mariah did to Choir soloists? And are we supposed to like or hate her love interest?
Join us in an episode that's barely audible because we hit so many whistle notes.

Episode 108: Is It A Manic Pixie Dream Girl?
This episode: Paprika
Oh goodness, I just had the weirdest dream. That Camp Counsellors Sam and Sarah took me to a nightclub, but everyone there was my mom, and then she made me move down into the sewers where a Nosferatu was loose, but because I was in a pineapple costume I couldn't move too well, and I fell over, and the Camp Counsellors watched as the Nosferatu disembowled me through the pineapple. What do you think it means? Well, let's watch Satoshi Kon's film Paprika to see of it can shed some light upon it.
How does Paprika pull of Dream Logic better than most other dream oriented films? Why are Sam and Sarah excited to talk about films in a film that's about dreams? And let's talk about fatphobia!

Episode 107: Is It A McDonald's Manager?
This episode: Love Never Dies
It's here, the sequel to the episode that no-one but Camp Counsellor Sarah was asking to do. The phantom of…. well, Phantom of the Opera looms large over this property, but can Love Never Dies escape as its own property worthy of love? Or will it be forced to choose between two equally terrible fates of either being forgotten or completely hated?
Is this musical about a man who's totally not bitter that his wife divorced him? How do you kneecap a mysterious and sexy character like the Phantom? And do you think Andrew has seen a Tim Burton?

Episode 106: Is It A Character Named "Cool Girl"?
It's time for our bi-annual heist, Campers. By that we mean twice a year, because we love a heist here. But this time, it's a plane! Sam's the muscle, so naturally he'll be in the cockpit the whole time. Sarah is the getaway driver, so she'll be directing the heist and doing tech from the ground. So they've brought in an expert in Jo Graham, of the How2Wrestling podcast, to actually steal the money! It's a plane full of money, so naturally we're going to watch the film Money Plane.
Who are the Lawrence Brothers? What kind of TARDIS physics exist on this plane? And how many nicknames can one villain have?

Episode 105: Is It My Secret Agent Lover Man?
This episode: Weetzie Bat
The sun set just off the Western Lawn of the Is It Camp Palace, as the cicadas hummed in the summer heat, the smell of fresh cut grass, and a blessed cool breeze blew in. On the veranda, Sam and Sarah and Horrible Puppet Robin lounged, sipping margaritas and noshing on slices of Fool's Gold, and the world moved around them despite the stillness of the evening.
When you press play, they'll discuss the first novel of the Podcast, Weetzie Bat, a tome more train of thought and prose-like than classic novel structure. Sam spilled margarita on his shirt.
Is the book another example of Magical Realism, or something else? What is Pro-Ana? And why is the genie just a footnote?

Episode 104: Is It The Airing of Delights 2: Yay Mongoose Yay?
This episode: The Airing of Delights 2!
It's that time of year again! We did it. Another full year of programming just for our faithful Campers. All the stars of the stage and screen are here tonight, as we give out arbitrary awards in categories we made up and voted on by no one but ourselves. Don't like the results? Tough ties. Go to the Oscars if you want those. But who will win what and why?
Are we as unhinged as ever? Will there be a special appearance by Horrible Puppet Robin? And can we bend the ideas and meanings behind some of these categories?
Join us, and you too may even receive an award!

Episode 103: Is It Uber for Criminals?
Sam's just been dumped. Sarah has murdered her way through an elite squad of mercenaries. But when these two cross paths, maybe Romance will blossom… no wait, he's gay, and he's not her type. But maybe their combined weirdness can navigate today's movie, Mr Right. Yes, it is another property by a terrible person, but the chemistry of the leads is electric!
Will Sam Rockwell dance in this movie? Did Sam like this movie? And how many times will we say "scrappy little nobody" in this episode? (Possibly followed by "bunching at the knees")
Get into the flow with us, avoid some trained killers, and fall in love!

Episode 102: Is It A Mask For Hands or Gloves For Eyes?
This episode: A Shot in the Dark
The scene begins with a long shot of the exterior of the Is It Camp Palace, where we watch as the Counsellors move in and out of different rooms. Hiding an affair? Making a secret rendezvous? All things are possible. Until a series of shots ring out, and we find Horrible Puppet Robin slumped on the floor! But who did it?
To figure this out, Sarah dons a series of disguises and cleverly infiltrates the premises. In order to help her out, we are watching the second in our Pink Panther series, A Shot In The Dark!
What repeat joke had Sarah cracked up every time? How is a naturist colony scene shot in a way that is neither lewd nor lascivious? And what tweak could we make to some of the background characters?
Follow the clues to unwrap this mystery before it ends in an explosion!

Episode 101: Is It Thieves Breathing Down Our Necks?
This episode: The Great Muppet Caper
It's heist time again! The Counsellors are preparing their equipment. Checklist time! Ropes. Check. Paper towel. Check. Double decker bus. Check. Sarah. Check. Sam. Check. Thing to heist? Oh no, how could we forget this crucial piece? What will the Camp Counsellors steal?
Well, in order to figure that out, we are sitting down woth the second film in our Muppets series, the Great Muppet Caper!
How is a Rubix Cube like a Muppet on a bicycle? What event in the film was Sarah, as a child, convinced she'd have lived through as an adult? And who was one of the greatest on-screen romances of Charles Grodin's life?
All this and more in an episode that'll have you conveniently dumping exposition at just the right time.

Episode 100: Is It A Hot Air Balloon To Heaven?
This episode: CATS
Is It Camp is having a ball! But not just any ball, a Jellicle Ball! What's a Jellicle Ball you may ask, why here comes Camp Counsellor Sam Tam Tagger to explain what it is. But before he can get a word out, he's stopped by the Wellington of Crime, Camp Counsellor Sarah Irenadler! Oh woe is us, cue 17 minutes of uninterrupted dancing.
OK, this makes little to no sense. But what's this, through the fog of the night? Why is special guest star Anthony "Book of Numbers" Oliveira, to help us out. And with him we are going to watch the disaster of all disaster films, Cats, for our 100th episode!
Could you make a sequel to Cats based entirely around an Avengers concept? What caused this film to go so very wrong? And how many times will we go off topic? It's Cats, so the plot is a little thin….

Episode 99: Is It Gravy, the Universal Sauce?
This episode: The F Word / What If
It's Canada Day, or near enough to it that the Counsellors have programmed some Canadian Content! And what's more Canadian than Daniel Radcliffe? No? How about Rafe Spall? Elia Kazan's granddaughter? Shit. How is this film Can-Con? We will figure this out, while we look figure out of men and women can ever truly be friends. Unless the film decides not to figure that out too. Here, watch The F Word and see if you can help us figure this out, while the Counsellors talk about the relationship between Emily Carr and Ninja Turtles.
How many locations in this film does Sam know? Is it a good idea to try and force friends to have sex? And have the Counsellors found the official sandwich of the pod?
All this in an episode that has entirely too much banter, but it works as character growth.

Episode 98: Is It The Children Longing For The Mines?
This episode: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
To finish out *Pride Month* Sarah and Sam are hitting the road once more. But in a different way they've hit the road before. This time, they're doing it in the Australian outback! Equipped with hot glue guns, an ABBA turd, and more fabric than a Fabricland, these two are determined to make a decent paycheck in a nice town. But how to prepare for the adventure outside of this? Why, by watching the classic LGBTQ+ film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Will Robin manage to stump Sarah in a surprising quiz round? Why is this film different from To Wong Foo? And why is Terrence Stamp one of the most beautiful women out to film?
All this and more in an episode that walks into every town asking for a Bloody Mary.
