The United States of O.D.D. and The Rule of Jenny Pen
What if I told you that America’s real divide isn’t red vs. blue—but rule followers vs. reflexive rebels?
That we’ve mistaken rebellion for personality, and defiance for strength?
In today’s episode, we’re unpacking the rise of oppositional behavior as a dominant cultural force—why being told “no” is the new national trauma, and how it’s reshaping everything from politics to the office break room.
The conversation then shifts to the film 'The Rule of Jenny Pen' which uses horror to explore deeper themes of aging, autonomy--and yes, defiance--in the human condition.

Smoke, Mirrors, and the Moral Panic Machine
What do Dungeons & Dragons, TikTok, and 17th-century witch trials have in common?
They all played starring roles in full-blown moral panics—times when society lost its mind over exaggerated or imaginary threats.
In today’s episode, Alex explores how moral panics take hold, who profits from them, and why the real damage often lasts long after the headlines fade.
If you've ever wondered why outrage feels contagious—and suspiciously profitable—you'll want to give this one a listen.
Spoiler: the real danger isn’t the thing they tell you to fear. It’s what you’re being distracted from.
In This Episode:
The anatomy of a moral panic
How fear gets weaponized for profit and power
Greatest hits: from Salem to Satanic Panic to Super Predators
Why critical thinking—not panic—is our best defense
A personal reflection on the importance of holding fast during cultural storms

The Mystery Box Presidency
Alex explores the concept of the 'Mystery Box Presidency,' a political strategy that utilizes suspense and ambiguity to engage the public while diverting attention from concrete policies.
Drawing parallels between storytelling techniques in entertainment and political governance, Alex discusses the implications of this approach, including the risks of chaos, confusion, and erosion of accountability, warning against the pitfalls of treating governance like a theatrical performance.

The Power of No: Why Setting Boundaries is a Cheat Code for Success
Here's a little something from my other show, PR After Hours...I think you may need to hear it, no? -- Alex
Saying yes to everything is a fast track to burnout, resentment, and an overstuffed calendar of obligations that don’t serve you.
The real power move? Saying no.
No isn’t about shutting doors—it’s about opening the right ones. It protects your time, energy, and mental clarity. It helps you focus on what actually matters—whether it’s writing a book, training for a half marathon, or simply preserving your sanity.
Author Derek Sivers said it best: “If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.” That filter has saved me from overcommitting to things that don’t align with my goals.
Want to be more productive, stress less, and take control of your time? Listen in and learn more.

Blending Noir and Cozy Genres with Dennis Feece
Author Dennis Feece returns to Mysterious Goings On to discuss his latest book, Of Towers and Shadows, which follows private investigator TB Stone as he tracks down a stalker and confronts a mysterious cult-like group. This installment takes on a darker tone and presents higher stakes than its predecessor.
In our conversation, we also touch on Robert B. Parker's influence on Feece's writing, the use of first-person narration, and the inspiration behind the Italian cooking references in the book. Feece describes Of Towers and Shadows as a darker continuation of his previous novel, Love, Pride, and Murder.
We explore themes of romance, idealized characters, and the blending of noir and cozy genres. Feece also discusses the development of his protagonist, TB Stone, delving into the exploration of his darker side in this new book.
The conversation concludes with insights into future books in the series. Tune in!

Follow amateur filmmakers and sci-fi geeks Mark (Eric McCormack) and Robert (Rafer Weigel)—based on future Inglorious Treksperts Mark Altman and Robert Meyer Burnett—as they navigate adulthood through "Star Trek" and other pop culture references. Securing Schools: Daniel Dluzneski on Shooter Preparedness
Today's episode tackles a question of paramount concern for every parent, educator, and student: How are schools preparing your child for the unthinkable reality of an active shooter situation? And what protocols are in place to respond to such harrowing events?
We are honored to welcome Daniel Dluzneski, a seasoned professional whose illustrious career with the U.S. Secret Service spans over two decades. Beginning his journey as a K-9 Technician alongside his trusted companion Korak, Daniel has navigated his way to a significant role within the Emergency Management Department of the Pinellas County Florida School System.
In this capacity, Daniel has been instrumental in ensuring the safety of over 100,000 students across 140 schools. His seamless transition from the sphere of national security to the educational sector endows him with an invaluable perspective on the critical issue of school safety.
Daniel is also the author of "The First FIVE Minutes," a comprehensive guide focusing on the vital initial steps of lockdown procedures. Join us as we delve into his insights and explore this crucial topic further.

Mentioned by Alex: Everytown partnered with Georgia Tech to study changes in social media conversations related to 114 American schools spanning 33 states, 90 days before active shooter drills compared with 90 days after the drills. This included drills in a mix of elementary, middle, and high schools. Everytown and Georgia Tech’s study further suggests that active shooter drills significantly impact mental health, regardless of whether they are implemented in elementary, middle, or high schools. However, each school level faces unique challenges. Stress and anxiety are highest among high school communities in the 90 days following drills (52 percent increase), while depression levels remain consistent with this age group. Middle school students, parents, and teachers experience the greatest increase in depression (55 percent), though stress and anxiety levels increase following drills as well (48 percent). Elementary school communities experience significant increases in stress and anxiety (28 percent) and depression (30 percent), though these impacts are less dramatic than those observed in middle and high schools. The Adventures of the Flash Gang with Downing & Waugh
In this captivating episode, we immerse ourselves in the atmospheric world of 1930s Pittsburgh with the dynamic literary duo, M.M. Downing and S.J. Waugh. Downing and Waugh discuss their middle-grade trilogy "The Adventures of the Flash Gang," where the lead character, a street orphan, and his diverse gang outwit pro-Nazi plots.
Dubbed by host Alex Greenwood as "The Baker Street Irregulars meets Encyclopedia Brown," the book's setting provides a gritty, smoggy backdrop that effectively becomes a character in itself and resonates with the current political climate, drawing parallels with modern American politics. It's a book that will capture your middle grader's attention and may just delight the middle-grader in you.

I challenge any reader not to fall in love with the histrionics and devil-may-care verve of Pearl Alice Clavell and her grease-smeared partner in crime, Lewis Carter.” —J.R. Comedy Legends and Online Worlds with Richard Sparks
In this captivating episode, Alex sits down with the legendary Richard Sparks, a mastermind in comedy writing and entertainment, whose collaborations span icons like Placido Domingo, Rowan Atkinson, and John Cleese of Monty Python fame.
Sparks delves into his latest foray into fantasy fiction with "New Rock, New Role," a novel drawing from his passion for online gaming and depicting a retired teacher's adventurous quest for self-discovery in the digital gaming world.
Reflecting on a storied career that catalyzed Rowan Atkinson’s rise with the unforgettable schoolmaster sketch, Sparks echoes Chekhov in celebrating the unique synergy between writer and actor. He reminisces about the golden age of British comedy, his camaraderie with Douglas Adams, and the undying quest for originality in storytelling.
Sharing his journey from poker to online role-playing games, Sparks reveals how gaming conventions and player interactions enrich his narratives, underscoring his fulfillment in the fantasy genre.

H.L. Howard on Tarot, Love, and the Divine
Today we open up to unconventional themes as we explore the romantic and spiritual dimensions of literature with guest HL Howard. The author introduces his book, "A Journey Must Be Taken: Playlist," which is deeply influenced by his personal experiences, including his corporate life during the COVID-19 pandemic. The story weaves a compelling narrative of a transformative love affair with a significant age difference, urging listeners to reflect on fate and relationships. Howard's book is a melange of Eastern philosophy and Western spirituality, examining the concept of love without boundaries through ancient wisdom. His novel uniquely incorporates a musical playlist as a narrative device, emphasizing the power of music to transcend cultural barriers and connect people across space and time, further enriched by tarot readings that complement the storytelling. Throughout the conversation, Howard shares his thoughts on the human mind's quest for connections and the relevance of tarot and oracle readings, the enduring nature of true love marked by mutual wish fulfillment, and the spiritual elements underpinning romantic relationships.
