Double Reel

By The Adamsons

The monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd.

James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. So is James Adamson, his imaginatively named son and co-host. As well as a look at news, new releases and how we're fitting in movie watching with our busy exciting lives, we look into tall tales of potentially great films that never got made, overlooked classics you need to see, and rants about remakes that should never have been made at all.

Issue 40 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with our regular Features episode. In our Classics and Recommended feature we look at the hugely influential 50s western Rio Bravo; our Hidden Gem is Tom Cruise's comparatively underseen American Made; The One That Got Away looks at British auteur John Boorman's failed attempt to make a live action version of Lord of the Rings in the 1970s; our Remake Hatewatch demolishes the execrable 2011 version of Conan the Barbarian; and to top it off we ask for Last Action Hero to be remade better this time.

Next week we'll bring you the latest Big Conversation, where we pitch ideas for the next big blockbuster. Our regular Double Reel Monthly for August is already available to download.

Issue 40 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd starts here! As usual we're releasing it in three parts through the month to keep your feed fed regularly, and we begin with Double Reel Monthly. It's a bumper episode thanks to a long discussion on Oppenheimer, as well as our usual look at news, new releases, reviews of other new films including Barbie and Heart of Stone and the fiendish Penalty Shootout Film Quiz. We finish with our year-long projects Legal Cage of Consent in which James (no the other one) watches a Nic Cage film picked for him at random by the internet, and James (yes that one) with The Cronenberg Institute which this month features Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis.

Next week we will bring you our regular Features episode and the following week it will be the Big Conversation.

39.3 The Big Conversation: Casting Decisions and "What If" Moments

Issue 39 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd concludes with the Big Conversation, in which the Adamsons tackle a topic from the film world in more detail. This month it's how casting affects a film and how different some of your favourite films would have been if the original choice had been cast. Sometimes it's a fascinating Sliding Doors moment; or it just proves what James (no, the other one) says, that often filmmakers are lucky they didn't get what they wanted. The first two parts of Issue 39 are already available to download.

38.3 The Big Conversation: The Golden Age of Animation (And Why It's Over)

38.3 The Big Conversation: The Golden Age of Animation (And Why It's Over)

Episode 38 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd concludes with our Big Conversation. In keeping this this issue's theme of animated films we look at the Golden Age of Animation. This phrase used to be applied to the early Disney Classics from Snow White to the Jungle Book, but we're here to argue that the Golden Age of Animation started with the Little Mermaid in 1989 - or with Toy Story in 1995. James and James aren't 100% agreed on that. But they are agreed that the new golden age is over and will tell you why if you download and listen right now.The previous parts of this Episode, Double Reel Monthly and The Features, are already out now so please do go back and listen to them as well if you haven't done so already.

38.2 The Features: Akira, The Iron Giant, A Princess of Mars, Tom and Jerry The Movie

Episode 38 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with the regular Features and this month's animation theme. Our Classics and Recommended film is 1988's anime masterpiece Akira; the Hidden Gem is the Iron Giant which became a family favourite but was hardly seen on its theatrical release; the One That Got Away is the story of how A Princess Of Mars nearly became the first ever animated feature film; the Remake Hatewatch is of the execrable 1992 version of Tom and Jerry; and we also have a Remake Restoration where we suggest a film that needs a remake because it didn't work as well as it could have.

Next week we bring you the Big Conversation about the Golden Age of Animated Films. The first part of this month's issue Double Reel Monthly is already available now.

37.3 The Big Conversation: The Art of the Trilogy

Issue 37 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd concludes with the Big Conversation, where we tackle a topic from the film world in more detail. This month we discuss film trilogies, including what qualifies a film as a trilogy (is it still a trilogy if they make a fourth film?). We look at some of the best and worst examples and wonder if they're still a thing in the age of streaming prestige TV shows.

The previous parts of this issue are out now, including Double Reel Monthly and the Features.

Episode 28, Reel 2: Sequel Syndrome. Godfather 2 vs 3, Aliens, Speed 2, Highlander 2, Mad Max Fury Road and much more

Reel 2 of our latest episode brings you the Big Conversation and This Time It's Personal. This month we dig into Sequel Syndrome, in which Hollywood can't resist continuing the search for more money with follow ups to successful films. We look at what works and doesn't work in sequels, and when they should and shouldn't be made. We range from the great sequels - Godfather 2, Aliens, Mad Max Fury Road, The Raid 2 to the OK but more of the same sequels - Die Hard 2, X Men 2, French Connection 2 - to the downright awful sequels like Speed 2, Highlander 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws The Revenge. We also ask whether some films are untouchable and shouldn't have a sequel, and what sequels we'd like to see that haven't been made yet.
