Double Reel
By The Adamsons
James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. So is James Adamson, his imaginatively named son and co-host. As well as a look at news, new releases and how we're fitting in movie watching with our busy exciting lives, we look into tall tales of potentially great films that never got made, overlooked classics you need to see, and rants about remakes that should never have been made at all.
Double ReelJan 25, 2023
40.2 The Features: Rio Bravo, American Made, John Boorman's Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian, Last Action Hero
Issue 40 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with our regular Features episode. In our Classics and Recommended feature we look at the hugely influential 50s western Rio Bravo; our Hidden Gem is Tom Cruise's comparatively underseen American Made; The One That Got Away looks at British auteur John Boorman's failed attempt to make a live action version of Lord of the Rings in the 1970s; our Remake Hatewatch demolishes the execrable 2011 version of Conan the Barbarian; and to top it off we ask for Last Action Hero to be remade better this time.
Next week we'll bring you the latest Big Conversation, where we pitch ideas for the next big blockbuster. Our regular Double Reel Monthly for August is already available to download.
40.1 Double Reel Monthly: Oppenheimer, Barbie, Heart of Stone, Cosmopolis, The Wicker Man

We range from the great sequels - Godfather 2, Aliens, Mad Max Fury Road, The Raid 2 to the OK but more of the same sequels - Die Hard 2, X Men 2, French Connection 2 - to the downright awful sequels like Speed 2, Highlander 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws The Revenge.
