Painting With Words

The title inspired by American poet, Billy Collins.  The entire quote goes like this: "Your page is lit by the candles of the past, all the writers that have helped you to write."

The African proverb used by Hillary Clinton is truer now then ever before.  "It takes a village to raise a child" highlights the need that children have to experience a variety of things as they grow.  In a pandemic, the village has been shut down.  Experiences relegated to virtual or limited to what a parent alone can provide. With vaccines coming, now maybe, we are close to opening up the world again to our children.  It takes a village!

We are creatures who have a great gift; the give of words.  This is a poem about the power of our words and our obligation to use this gift wisely.

Inspired by Amanda Gorman's reading of her poem entitled "The Hill We Climb".  As we come to the end of February, the official "Black History Month", my hope is that we don't close the book on recognizing, with deep gratitude, the contributions, talents, and accomplishments of the Black community. I hope that this past year has taught us more about ourselves.  In particular, how deeply rooted hate is in our country.  We can't fix it if we don't recognize that it's there.

Walking in the woods during the winter is different than other seasons but this winter it felt as though the woods was talking to me.
