When your startup hits a one in a million scenario and early stage problems @1987active

Today’s episode I chat about my brand 1987 a Boston-Based, Boston-inspired active-loungewear company and our second collection launch. We sold out of two designs in less than an hour on launch day and well I couldn’t be more grateful for our epic reception just a few months into building the brand. That said there’s so much we could be doing better so I take a deep dive into the problem sets we are facing and how to sold for them. Early stage ventures are quite precarious creatures so I share my experience as an entrepreneur who makes mistakes and how I adapt and rectify them. My hope is that this episode helps those of you who want to start their own business!

Interview with Ben Francisco: MLB World Series player (Philadelphia Phillies) and UCLA alum about his career, determination, and BLM

In today's episode, we are chatting with Ben Francisco a former professional baseball outfielder, who is currently a major league scout for the Los Angeles. Ben played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, and New York Yankees, and even played in the World Series! Ben and I have been friends for about 12 years now, he is a super humble person and it's always great to catch up with him. I loved his advice on how to pick yourself up and his perspective on Black Lives Matter, and what the sport of baseball is doing to address racial inequities in the sport. I hope you enjoy this one!

Dating and single at 30 in 2020: Hinge, ghosting, dating apps, no etiquette and dating storytimes -- hilarious

In today's podcast, we're taking a lighthearted approach as I explain what it's like to date in my 30s after being in longterm relationships for about 8+ years. I totally missed the dating app culture/experience, so this is my first foray into the whole dating online thing. Let me tell you it is complicated, hilarious, and lacking social graces but alas it's fun to chat about, right?

How to get what you want -- identify it, ask for it, pursue it -- even if you encounter a no, or two, or three

How to get what you want -- identify it, ask for it, pursue it -- even if you encounter a no, or two, or three

Today's podcast episode is how to get what you want. This may seem simple but it can be difficult to achieve at times. The recipe for getting what you want is really quite simple, first off you need to know what that is. This can be harder thank you think! We've all been a little ambivalent at times. Then you need to be direct in the way you ask for the thing you want -- the only way you'll get it is by asking! Lastly, pursuing what you want when you inevitably encounter a NO or two, or three, etc. This is the phase I struggle with most, and perhaps you do too? I give concrete examples of ways in which this works and some advice from a Yale MBA professor who does a lot of work with standard-setting. Super interesting stuff if I do say so myself!

Radical Honesty: How telling the truth can change your whole world for the better - Covid Clarity

Radical Honesty: How telling the truth can change your whole world for the better - Covid Clarity

In today's podcast, I'm discussing the theory of "radical honesty" which has the following principles. I dive into how historically I've been more of a people pleaser, less willing to speak my truth, and how "COVID clarity" ignited a series of truths that changed my life for the better. Ultimately telling someone how you feel, even if it's hard, is the right thing to do for everyone. I chat about ways you can make this change in your life and what to expect from those changes.  The Core Principles of Radical Honesty Lying is the primary cause of suffering Living honestly is the antidote to lying and the root of its power is in distinguishing noticing from thinking. You can only notice in the moment. And you can only notice three categories of things: sensations, thoughts, and your external surroundings. Sharing honestly what you notice frees you from the suffering caused by attachment to lying, withholding, phoniness, and ideals. Sharing honestly what you notice also deepens love, connection, understanding and forgiveness (eventually). Radical Honesty is a living, walking, talking out-loud meditation that moves you from reactivity to being a creator of your own life.

What it's really like to serve in the Peace Corps: My PCV experience in Albania, hiking mountains, teaching kids Rihanna songs, and adapting

What it's really like to serve in the Peace Corps: My PCV experience in Albania, hiking mountains, teaching kids Rihanna songs, and adapting

Today I'm sharing about my Peace Corps experience. The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. Its official mission is to provide social and economic development abroad through technical assistance while promoting mutual understanding between Americans and populations served. The program was established by Executive Order 10924, issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1961 and authorized by Congress on September 21, 1962, with the passage of the Peace Corps Act (Pub.L. 87–293).

Peace Corps Volunteers are American citizens, typically with a college degree, who work abroad for a period of two years after three months of training. Volunteers work with governments, schools, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and entrepreneurs in education, youth development, community health, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment. After 24 months of service, volunteers can request an extension of service.[2]

Since its inception, more than 235,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps and served in 141 countries.[3] In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, all volunteers were evacuated from all posts. There are currently no volunteers serving at this time.[4][5]

How-to get into a Top 10 MBA, advice and guide from a Berkeley Haas MBA '19 (admissions, GRE/GMAT, GPA, work experience, recommendations), and my #1 admissions secret

How-to get into a Top 10 MBA, advice and guide from a Berkeley Haas MBA '19 (admissions, GRE/GMAT, GPA, work experience, recommendations), and my #1 admissions secret

How to get into a top 10 MBA program

My guide sold here: https://www.jendeangelis.com/shop/how-to-get-into-a-top-10-mba-guide

When I first decided to go to business school I was at a loss for what to do. No one in my close friend group had the same aspiration and I didn’t know any alumni to reach out to for guidance. You could say I started from zero in terms of my understanding of the admissions process, school landscape, and the highly competitive nature of the programs. I set my sights on a top 10 MBA without really understanding what that would entail. My thought process was that an MBA derives much of its value from its network, so if I was going to pay $50K per year, it ought to be for a stellar (i.e., a top 10) network. I began reading about the application process, essays, recommendations, GMAT/GRE scores, GPA requirements, interviews, etc. Honestly, none of it seemed all that daunting outside of the GMAT quantitative (quant) section. By nature I’m good at verbal, always have been. So when I realized that a top quant score was imperative in terms of acceptance into a competitive program, the panic set in. I took the GMAT without any test prep and let me tell you it was a disaster, I had test anxiety, my mind went blank and I REALLY bombed the quant section. As I had predicted the writing and verbal sections were a breeze but OMG math. YIKES. So I basically did everything wrong in my first year of applying, I applied super late with a less than stellar GMAT score, and because of that, I was rejected from my dream schools. I took a month off to nurse my wounds and came up with a plan. I would:

I would enroll in Veritas Prep (Manhattan Prep and Magoosh are some other options to look into) for GMAT classes.
I would speak with alumni to cater to my essays and narrative toward each school versus a one-size-fits-all approach.
I would apply earlier in the year, ideally, round one, but not later than round two.

With the above changes which included studying, networking, and research I was accepted into my dream program UC Berkeley Haas (ranked #6 overall and #4 for entrepreneurship — my interest), and really I couldn’t believe it! I’ve created an in-depth guide that I wish I’d had at the onset of my admissions journey (link to purchase: https://www.jendeangelis.com/shop/how-to-get-into-a-top-10-mba-guide) to help you traverse the ins and outs of admissions and how you too can be accepted into your dream program! Best of luck and go bears!

How to Get Over a Breakup - Ask Yourself This Question first: who are you going to choose?

How to Get Over a Breakup - Ask Yourself This Question first: who are you going to choose?

In this episode, I talk about how I'm going through a breakup and what that looks like for me. I discuss the opportunity that comes with choosing yourself over someone else and how scary it is to let go of a life you have been building with someone else. I don't get into the details of the breakup as to respect my privacy and my ex's but I do talk about the general themes of what I discovered and how the hope and possibility of something new begin to replace feelings of sadness and loss.

This is probably the most vulnerable episode I've released and I appreciate you all for being part of my journey.

How I predicted the fall of WeWork before anyone else, why Venture Capital is doomed, and what we can do about it (diversified founders, emphasis on profitability vs growth)

In this week's podcast, I discuss how I predicted the fall of WeWork before anyone else (and well before Softbank took over, I have receipts! See the video below), how venture capitalists are failing women and people of color and why it would actually behoove them to invest in diversified teams (as they perform better financially speaking). I also dig into the Harvard studies around the types of questions male and female entrepreneurs get asked and how those impact the funding they receive. We also discuss the four stages of the VC process and how the pitch process fails female entrepreneurs (even when controlling for the pitch itself). Also apologies for the sound quality on part of this recording, I tried recording from a new computer and I won't be making that mistake again!

Clarification: in the Poscast I say something to the effect of we haven’t sought VC funding, what I mean here is that although we have taken fundraising meetings with traditional VCs, we have opted for less money/equity free options vs larger allotments with investment partners who would take large equity percentages. For now, we want to maintain control of the company and to choose our North Star metrics/growth rate vs a partner dictating them. We have been more interested in accelerators for that reason but that could change, and we may look to fundraise in the future/in the fall.

The very first step to starting a business -- validating an idea, my journey of founding a start-up at the earliest stage (design thinking, market validation, customer interviews, etc)

My many, many failures and how they lead to some of my greatest successes: launching a business, UC Berkeley Haas MBA and making my dream dance team

Today on the podcast we're discussing my failures, yep you heard that right! I have made so many mistakes and failed so many times and that tends to surprise people. I give you a "tell-all" about my failure to get into business school the first year I applied, how launching a business out of my MBA *almost* didn't happen, and even how my younger self traversed through dancing tryout failures.

I think too many "successful" people shy away from sharing their failures because they don't want to be seen as vulnerable or less than but I believe there is true power in our stories and that's the real way to inspire others/make a difference.
