Episode 53: Take Your D*mn PTO!
Episode 53: Take your damn PTO already! I just spent 10 straight days unplugged to be out of the office and celebrating my birthday! This episode will give you tips on how to enjoy your time away from the office and not feel guilty about it.
In a world that glorifies constant connection and communication, I've always been known as someone who can't sit still. My work consumes me, and even when I'm not officially working, I find myself creating more tasks to fill my time. So when I mention taking a vacation, it's met with a great deal of skepticism, especially from those who know me well. Not many believe that I know how to truly detach myself from work. I've always strived to strike a delicate balance between "working a little bit" and "being on PTO." But this time, I made a conscious decision to unplug completely, without allowing guilt to seep in for not immediately answering emails, returning phone calls, or responding to messages.
In today's fast-paced world, taking time off from work has become essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. But, many professionals struggle with guilt and anxiety when it comes to being out of the office. So here are some tips you will hear in this episode:
- Just Unplug!
PTO doesn't just stand for Paid time off - it also stands for "prepare the others." I will share some tips to ensure a smooth transition during your absence.
- Remember, You Earned it!
Make the most of your vacation and learn to disconnect. Engage in self-care, and explore the world around you!
- Coming back to work doesn't have to suck!
Organize your inbox and avoid the "first day back blues." Think about what you learned or how you felt while you were away from the office and use that as your motivation to infuse new ideas into the work that you do!
Taking care of yourself isn't saying "me first," it also means saying it's about "me...too."
Being out of the office is not just a luxury. It's a necessity. If you want to maintain a sense of sanity and healthy work-life balance, just take your d*mn PTO already and enjoy the hell out of it!

Episode 48: Tough Talks: A framework on how to master difficult conversations w/ Gary Ross
In this episode, Gary and Jessica will go over how to approach and navigate these types of conversations with ease and confidence.
Some of the things you will hear:
Identify the objective of the conversation. Before you engage in any difficult conversation, it's important to identify the objective of the discussion. What do you hope to achieve from the conversation? Is it to resolve a conflict or to provide feedback? Knowing the objective will help you stay focused and on track during the conversation.
Decide on how and when to communicate the message. Once you have identified the objective, it's time to decide on how and when to communicate the message. Choose a time and place that is private, quiet, and free of distractions. Consider the other person's schedule and make sure they have enough time to engage in the conversation.
Determine what you want in the end and how to follow up. After the conversation, it's important to follow up and check in on the other person. This will show that you are committed to resolving the issue and maintaining a positive relationship.
Be Honest and Empathic
Anticipate responses and reactions
Watch your body language and tone of voice
Listen to Understand vs. Listen to React
Handling difficult conversations can be a challenging experience, but with the right approach and mindset, it is possible to navigate these situations with ease and confidence.

Episode 44: Are You the Disruptor? OR Are You the Disrupted? With Wayne Brown, Skills4Executives
Episode 44 - Jess Get Hired Podcast Uncertainty is produced by disruption because it brings about change. Everyone may not always be in favor of change. When something disrupts the way we learn, act, think, or spend our time, it creates something new, modifies our habits, and heightens our awareness. Innovation and disruption have an impact on how we approach and implement change. Leaders who are able to navigate through disruptive environments are competitively empowered over those who are unable to do so. They understand the importance of being agile, and flexible, and how to be disruptive themselves.
Meet Wayne Brown, a disruptor in his own right. Wayne is an author, coach, and podcaster, and was recently named “Executive Coach of the Year 2022” by CEO Magazine. With 45 years as a professional executive, Wayne draws on his experience, having worked with diverse cultures from countries across Europe, India, the Middle East, Asia, and North and South America. This background brings unique insights and in-depth knowledge to his coaching practice. Wayne supports his clients to manage their evolving business landscape. He is passionate about helping executives and teams develop their leadership capabilities and thrive in their corporate environment. In this episode we touch on 21st century leadership.

Episode 43: Bouncing Back after Job Loss
Every morning when I open my laptop and scroll through LinkedIn, I see countless posts about another colleague or connection who has been laid off. Notwithstanding, it is also refreshing to see that with just one post, hundreds of other people are willing to help and support.
I've been there - a lot of sleepless nights, anger, frustration, nervousness, and perhaps a little bit of excitement about what might happen next. When you lose your job for the first time, you have a lot of questions running through your head. "Why me?" "Could I have done something different?" "What am I going to do?"
I've learned a few lessons from each time I've been fired, furloughed, or had my position eliminated, so I thought some of my life lessons might help someone else who is going through the same thing and wanted to share them with you.
I will share a personal story about a time my position was eliminated and I will share a few of my lessons.
Here's a preview:
It sucks – You’ll be uncomfortable but don’t ruin relationships on the way out of the door.
Your dreams, goals, and aspirations don’t have to end just because your job does. What can you do to reinvent yourself?
Plan ahead – what can you do if your job does get eliminated – think creatively and think positively
Invest in yourself – time to focus on being a better version of you. Unemployed 2.0 – How will you upgrade?
Get your Shit together – finances, relationships, professional life and personal life – Check!
Acknowledge your emotions and move on
Prepare your narrative -What are you going to say and what's your career pivot?

Episode 42: Redefining Recruiting with Leah Daniels, Jobsync
Meet Leah Daniels, Chief Commercial Officer with JobSync. She brings her perspective on the recruiting landscape to Episode 42 of the Jess Get Hired Podcast. Leah is a Talent Acquisition Executive with impressive credentials from her time at Appcast, Monster, Bullhorn, and ZoomInfo. Her industry experience working with large enterprise organizations granted her a patent on detecting the early behavior of candidates in social media.
In this episode, Jessica and Leah discuss how the role of the recruiter is evolving to become more project management-led. There is also a greater focus on talent quality and allowing recruiters to be more savvy business partners. Gone are the days of only filling jobs. The modern-day recruiter needs to acquire new skills and capabilities that will help them not only redefine the role and responsibilities of a typical recruiter but refine them.
Technology also plays a huge role in how recruiting will transform in the years ahead. JobSync automates the integration of employers’ ATSs and the job sites they use, resulting in 2-5x fully completed applications, improving the applicant and candidate experience, and eliminating hours of wasted recruiters’ time from manual tasks every day.

Episode 39: Outsourcing - The Competitive Edge for Business w/ Greg Brooks - Rocket Station
With a recession looming and the cost of goods and services skyrocketing in the United States, many businesses can gain a competitive advantage by outsourcing in order to save their business, cut costs, and improve overall customer satisfaction. Technology, call centers, human resources, and manufacturing are some of the industries that frequently outsource. On this episode, I will introduce you a company that focuses primarily on the real estate industry, a niche that few people would consider outsourcing their work to. However, if you are a real estate investor, property manager, realtor, or broker, this solution may be worth considering!
If you're interested in jobs abroad or working remotely, this is a discussion worth listening to. We will discuss the benefits of outsourcing as well as how to keep employees engaged when they are remote.
Meet Greg Brooks:
Greg is the National Director of Business Development at Rocket Station, an outsourcing firm that assists businesses in hiring skilled virtual assistants. Greg has over a decade of sales, marketing, and business development experience. We will discuss the motivation for outsourcing business components overseas and how it provides companies with the competitive advantage they may require to succeed.
