The Mothers of Reinvention

In honor of the mother figures in our lives, we pulled some of our favorite moments from The Mothers of Reinvention. Here's a little taste of the Rebel Women we've had on the pod. 

Dr. Sophia Yen has a passion for making women's lives easier. Women have #BetterThingsToDo than to run to the pharmacy each month and should not suffer from "pill anxiety" - the fear of running out of their prescription birth control. She is the CEO and Co-Founder of Pandia Health, where they solve this problem by bringing #BirthControl to women wherever they have internet and a mailbox. She loves to help educate women about #PeriodsOptional and men and women about #EmergencyContraception.

She is a #Reproductive rights specialist/advocate. Adolescent Medicine specialist and Board certified in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and lobbying/advocating for women's rights and teens' rights.

Kathryn Finney is a builder, a venture capitalist, and a visionary. She is the founder and Managing General Partner of Genius Guild, a venture studio with a $20M venture fund that builds and invests in scalable companies led by Black founders that serve their communities and beyond. Kathryn invests in market-based innovations designed to end racism. She is also the founder of The Doonie Fund, supporting over 2,000 Black women entrepreneurs throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Kathryn is well-known as the founder and past CEO of digitalundivided, a groundbreaking social enterprise focused on creating a world where women own their work, and mastermind of the widely acclaimed #ProjectDiane research. She started digitalundivided after selling her company, The Budget Fashionista, a lifestyle media company, making her one of the first Black women to have a successful startup exit.

A Yale-trained epidemiologist, Kathryn has received numerous honors and awards including the Paypal Maggie Lena Walker Achievement Award, Aspen Financial Leaders Fellowship, Leadership Unbound General Partner Rising Star award, Echoing Green Fellowship, Eisenhower Fellowship, an Entrepreneur Magazine “Woman to Watch”, a Marie Claire “Woman to Watch”, and on the Ebony Power 100, Black Enterprise “40 under 40” list, and more. She is an Obama White House Champion of Change and past member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE) appointed by the Obama Administration.

Her new book, Build The Damn Thing: How to Start a Successful Business if You're Not a Rich White Guy, is slated to launch in the summer of 2022 under the Penguin Random House Portfolio imprint. 

Tyomi Morgan is a Certified Sexologist, Authentic Tantra® Practitioner and International Pleasure Coach whose candid and authentic approach to sexual technique and eroticism has inspired and enlightened millions of people around the world.

The model-turned-sexpert began her journey of educating the masses in 2011 with the launch of her Sexuality Education Blog Glamerotica101.com. And ever since, The ‘GLAMAZON’ has spread her sex positive message worldwide via Glamerotica101’s Youtube Channel and her Authentically salacious social media presence.

Tyomi’s advice has been featured on Huffington Post, Buzzfeed.com, Blavity.com, The Washington Post’s Youtube Channel, The Lily, New York Mag’s The Cut, EBONY Magazine, Essence.com, Yourtango.com, Men’s Health, Shape.com, BET.com, CBS Radio, Playboy Radio, “The Nod Podcast” iHeart Radio, Blackdoctor.org, MadameNoire.com, XoNecole.com and countless other platforms.

She is a former Contributing Writer for EBONY Magazine and EBONY.com and has been featured on Comedy Central’s popular sketch comedy series Tosh.0. Tyomi has toured the country as the Exxxotica Expo’s Seminar Coordinator and Resident sexpert since 2017 and is a former Playboy Radio Host of “Glamazon Tyomi’s Sex Academy.” Tyomi is an advocate for reproductive rights and is a member of the National Coalition For Sexual Health, a coalition whose mission is to help inform U.S. citizens about sexual health and sexual fulfillment.

New York Public Radio has recently appointed Kristina Newman-Scott, Executive Director of The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space.

In her new role, Newman-Scott will oversee NYPR’s broadcast venue and street-level event space and be responsible for setting the direction including the strategy for all curatorial, audience operational, and financial growth.

She previously served as President of BRIC, a leading arts and media institution anchored in Downtown Brooklyn whose work spans contemporary visual and performing arts, media, and civic action. She was the first immigrant and first woman of color to serve as BRIC’s President and one of the very few women of color to lead a major New York cultural institution.

Under her tenure, BRIC embarked on an ambitious, human-centered process in pursuit of clarity of purpose in the form of a new four-year Strategic Plan. That process led to a re-articulated mission informed by the institution's impact and legacy, and a new vision statement guided by aspirational goals, centered on artists and the communities served by BRIC. Additionally, she led a renewed commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity in every aspect of the organization.

Newman-Scott's awards and recognitions include being named one of the City and State New York’s, 2021 Telecommunications Power 50 (individuals shaping New York’s digital future), an Observer’s NYC 2020 Arts Power 50, a National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellow, A Hive Global Leadership Selectee, and a Next City Urban Vanguard. In June 2018, Americans for the Arts presented Kristina with the Selina Roberts Ottum Award, which recognizes an individual working in arts management who exemplifies extraordinary leadership qualities.

Previously, Newman-Scott served as the Director of Culture and State Historic Preservation Officer for the State of Connecticut; Director of Marketing, Events and Cultural Affairs for the City of Hartford; Director of Programs at the Boston Center for the Arts; and Director of Visual Arts at Hartford's Real Art Ways.

Kristina was appointed to the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission in 2020 and currently serves on the Brooklyn Arts Council, National Arts Strategies, New Yorkers for Culture and Arts and the New York Arts Education Roundtable.

Kristina was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and worked as a practicing artist and TV/radio host in her home country before moving to the US in 2005. She currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.

Miry Whitehill is a social entrepreneur, activist, and speaker. Her work over the past decade focuses on immigration, community engagement and social media and digital marketing.

Miry is best known as the founder of Miry’s List which can be found at miryslist.org, the first nonprofit organization to develop a scalable solution to the historic and systemic problem of refugees starting out in America without the things, people and services they need to feel safe and normal. Through crowdsourcing and social media, Miry’s List addresses the needs of families resettling as refugees by connecting them with their new American neighbors. Since its founding in 2016, Miry’s List has served over 320 families from countries including Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran and activated over 70,000 America people to welcome their resettling neighbors.

Prior to founding Miry’s List, Miry worked in digital advertising, helping Fortune 500 companies grow their audience online through video, social media and influencer outreach.

As a speaker, Miry empowers audiences to support and uplift families and individuals resettling in America as refugees, focusing on inclusivity, equity, safety and freedom in all its forms, civility, and a shared sense of belonging. Through storytelling and personal anecdotes, she has dedicated herself improving the experience for families resettling as refugees in America by connecting them with their neighbors.

Most recently Miry was the recipient of the 2019 LinkedIn Compassion Award and in 2018 she was recognized as 1 of 11 Women Making L.A. A Better Place by Los Angeles Magazine. Miry is the coauthor of People of the World, A Migration Story, which will come out in 2020, and creator of People of the World Migration Club, which piloted at Eagle Rock Elementary in Spring, 2019.

Tatianna Tarot is a Diviner, Intuitive Tarot Therapist, Spiritual Wellness Instructor, Iyalorisa Priestess, Espiritista and Mama, currently based in New Orleans. She has over 20 years of experience as a Tarot Reader, providing this service as means of modern alternative therapy, aiding others in gaining awareness of their personal power, intuitive gifts and facilitating healing through deepening other’s connection with Spirit and their Ancestral lineages. She is an Akashic Records practitioner, assisting and guiding others in healing deep rooted karmic patterns, past life trauma, and giving insight on their soul’s journey. She leads annual international retreats that focus on personal development, spiritual wellness and mental health.  She also hosts various workshops throughout the U.S, focusing on Spiritual practices of the African diaspora, multidimensional Energy Healing and Divination work. She facilitates a monthly donation-based gathering in New Orleans, catering to the spiritual development, community, and education of the African diasporic healing practices. All proceeds from the Ase Collective are donated to a local organization benefiting Black womxn and children of New Orleans, La. Tatianna Tarot’s work  has been featured in: VH1, HBO, Apple TV, Bravo, Google, Vice, Good & Well, Target, Afropunk  Spotify, Mitú, Refinery 29, Om Noire, Being Boss, Black Girl in OM, The Get Up Morning Show, Latina Magazine, MadameNoire, Bustle. Her mission is to provide black and brown people spiritual tools to shift their mindset towards self-empowerment and truth.

You may recognize Theo as the singer of the all female punk band Lunachicks who' toured the world for over a decade or from her years as a model (CKBe, Kenneth Cole, Betsey Johnson, Patricia Field) and actress (Tadpole, Bringing Out The Dead, etc) or as the creator of NY lip gloss brand, Armour Beauty. Theo’s passion for creating art, music and beauty is an on going adventure with no plans of stopping. Especially with the release of the band biography, Fallopian Rhapsody out now, and a recent return to the stage with Lunachicks. 

Today marks a very special episode of The Mothers of Reinvention, as it is the first to feature a father. Jake Graf is an international award winning director, writer and actor based in London. He uses the medium of film to elicit positive change, giving representation to rarely seen characters and stories and promoting acceptance and understanding. Using his platform to give a voice to the trans male community, Jake is widely considered to be one of the most visible trans men in the UK.  All of his films are used as educational tools in universities, schools, prisons and media events internationally.

He and wife Hannah Graf MBE were the subjects of 2020's hit Channel 4 documentary 'Our Baby: A Modern Miracle', following their journey to becoming parents to daughter Millie. Both husband and wife are patrons of the Mermaids Charity, The Albert Kennedy Trust, ambassadors for Age UK and judges for The National Diversity Awards, The European Diversity Awards and The Rainbow Honours.

Charity is a mother to 6, wife and social justice advocate for issues ranging from juvenile justice and foster care to human sex-trafficking and homelessness. She survived gangs, drugs, jail, teenage pregnancy and homelessness to recreate herself as the CEO of CASA, where she is reinventing the system from the inside out. As an advocate, Charity serves on several boards and committees to address issues that disproportionately effect communities of color, such as Commissioner for Los Angeles County Children & Families and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors for the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC).

Courtney A. Kemp is a highly regarded creator, showrunner and producer in the television industry. Kemp is the mind behind Starz’ critically acclaimed gritty New York drama, “Power.” The hit series marks her debut as a creator and showrunner and follows the complex character James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick and his empire. Under Kemp’s leadership, “Power” drew a record 6.3 million viewers each week, making it the network’s most highly watched original series on record. For her work on the show, Marie Claire Magazine named Kemp one of “The 50 Most Influential Women in
America,” she was included as one of the female powerhouses on Elle Magazine’s “The Agenda” and named one of Ebony Magazine’s “Power 100” honorees.    Previously, Kemp was a writer and supervising producer on the celebrated television show “The Good Wife,” which went on to garner nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and a Writers Guild Award for Dramatic Series. She also worked on
ABC’s “Eli Stone” and Fox’s “Justice” and “The Bernie Mac Show,” among others. Prior to her work in television, Kemp wrote for many prestigious magazines, including GQ, Vibe, and Marie Claire.  Kemp holds a B.A. from Brown University in English Literature and received her M.A. in

I scream! You scream! We all scream for Ice Cream! Genelle is the Principal Designer at BPC Interior Design. Board Member SoCal NOMA, an Associate AIA, Allied ASID and Co-owner of All Chill Inc. Working for the exposure of all things beautiful, our principal  designer, Genelle Brooks-Petty, lives by the words of her beloved  grandmother, "This is not a dress rehearsal. So, live it to the  fullest!" As a consultant, she has taken that passionate approach to  build a successful wardrobe styling business. It was her clients in that  realm who pushed her into interior design. While studying interior  architecture at UCLA, honing skills under a famed designer, and  servicing residential and boutique scale commercial clients of her own,  Genelle has developed a unique approach to interior design. Her work bridges gaps. It is historical with a modern edge; cost-efficient and  high style; vintage and brand-new. Genelle is a graduate of Howard  University's School of Business and holds a Master of Interior  Architecture from the UCLA Extension/ California State Polytechnic  University, Pomona joint study program.

On this episode of The Mothers of Reinvention, host Jess Zaino heads down the Farm for this week's epic guest, Kelis.  They sit down amongst the turkeys, sheep, cows and horses, plus her three young children, to talk the ultimate reinvention from singer/songwriter to Chef/Saucier and Farmer. 

A charismatic singer and songwriter who hailed from Harlem and left home at 16 to sing with Wu-Tang Clan and land a deal with Virgin, Kelis left an immediate impression with her first solo single, "Caught Out There" -- a Top Ten R&B single. While her other Top Ten R&B single, 2003's Grammy-nominated "Milkshake," was a popular hit --  she released some of the most creative R&B albums of the late '90s and 2000 including Kaleidoscope, which went to number 2 on the UK charts. In the 2010s, she took left turns that defied expectations and positioned her a fascinating, unpredictable artist.

Wanting to follow her creative passion and deepen her purpose, Kelis enrolled and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu cooking school as a Saucier. She went on to create her bottled sauce brand, Bounty and Full, as well as host numerous food television shows while continuing to tour the world. She is a vocal supporter of women, women business, investing in female-led endeavors including supporting her own business in music, food, agriculture and hospitality. 

This episode is especially intimate with never before heard stories of Kelis' incredible life and career.
