JHBG Podcast Guest Host Chad Tindel sits down with Alex Wen, the newly named Interim Artistic Director of the Jackson Heights Orchestra (JHO) in Jackson Heights, Queens. 

The upcoming JHO concert on March 13, 2024 is titled "A journey through the lineage of an American music tradition" and traces the beginnings of American music starting with Dvorak's time in New York City through his various pupils down through Burleigh, Ellington, and Copland.

JHBG Podcast Guest Host Chad Tindel sits down with Alex Wen, the newly named Interim Artistic Director of the Jackson Heights Orchestra (JHO) in Jackson Heights, Queens. 


A graduate of the Masters program in Orchestral Conducting at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Alex studied with Maurice Peress and managed the Queens College Conductors Workshop collaborating with composers David Amram, Bruce Saylor, and George Tsontakis. Wen was selected as a participant in the 2019 Conductors Workshop of the Cabrillo Festival for Contemporary Music where he worked with Cristian Măcelaru and Octavio Más-Arocas. Alex holds a Bachelor of Music in viola performance from Azusa Pacific University (APU) where he served as an assistant conductor to the APU Chamber Singers, responsible for preparing the orchestra for the National Collegiate Choral Organization’s national conference. 


The upcoming JHO concert on December 12, 2023 will be Alex's first concert as Interim Artistic Director. In this episode we speak with him about how he got interested in conducting and his time studying conducting at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Then we dive into his vision for the Jackson Heights Orchestra this year and beyond, after which we discuss the repertoire that he's programmed for the next 3 concerts. We hope everyone comes to see her conduct this final concert.

Today we sit down with Patricia (Pat) Glunt, the Founder, Artistic Director, and Conductor of the Jackson Heights Orchestra in Jackson Heights, Queens. Pat, a seasoned violinist and music educator, holds an illustrious career spanning over two decades with the New York City Department of Education, where she notably served in various influential roles such as supervisor for city-wide music programs and Interim Acting Director of Music. Throughout her career in education, she has collaborated with renowned institutions like Carnegie Hall and Juilliard, and contributed to significant music curriculum projects. After her retirement, Glunt continued to share her expertise as an adjunct professor at Hunter College and New York University, while mentoring new music teachers in the city. She is also celebrated for her role as the founder and artistic director of the Jackson Heights Orchestra (JHO) in Queens, New York, signaling the start of its second thriving decade. Recognized by the Music Educators’ Association of New York City and honored as New Yorker of the Week, Glunt's enduring impact on music education and her contributions to the Jackson Heights Orchestra underscore her devotion to her profession and the community.


The upcoming JHO concert on May 17, 2023 will be Pat's final concert as Artistic Director. In this episode we speak with her about her background before starting the orchestra, what led her to starting an orchestra after retiring as a music educator, and her approach to programming and running a community orchestra.
