Driven to Doctorate - An Interview with Dr. Chad Becker, PhD
Dr. Becker has a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. He came from a time long ago, before computers were ubiquitous. Now he teaches for Northcentral University (online). Drs. Becker and Goodin discuss the doctorate and whether it is "worth it." Becker emphasizes teaching, scholarship, and service (university, discipline, community). They discuss the Ed.D. vs. the Ph.D. and "making lives better" better within the one-to-one teaching model at NCU. As a part-time faculty, Becker still contributes to the community and culture of NCU (e.g., webinars). He researches fairness, equity, and democracy in curriculum as well as students who are dissertating. Becker and Goodin discuss the complex demographics of NCU students and the special care and accommodation needed to support them in individualized ways. Planning for the dissertation during coursework and in terms of home life is a necessary step. Dr. Becker explains how the problem, purpose, and research questions can be developed in alignment with one another. "Dissertations have to tap into the existing literature," Becker says.
If no one has written about it, it won't make for a good dissertation. He points to the dissertation as a type of test of research acumen that, when proven successfully, will result in a doctoral degree.

Driven to Doctorate - An Interview with Dr. Alison Miller, PhD
Join Dr. Goodin as he interviews Dr. Alison Miller, owner of The Dissertation Coach. While earning her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, she worked to support the dignity among the homeless population. Find out how “The Dissertation Coach” business started as a temporary business but developed into a social media phenomenon and a thriving, growing business. Soon, Dr. Miller would offer coaching services and, later, consulting work. Her Academic Writer’s Space was catalyzed by the isolation of writers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hear her talk about being deliberately present, taking a deep dive into the literature, being okay with “not knowing,” being mindful and planful, and finding balance and self-compassion. She reminds students that they own the dissertation and are responsible for the effort and the outcome. She says, “Everything that a student needs to do between the beginning and the end of the dissertation is a learnable component.” She encourages faculty to filter their feedback to leave people better than you found them.
