In order to make it a safer place, we need to start from the very beginning and that's by theorising plausible reasons as to why we think the scene is in its current state. What is gatekeeping in music and have you ever done it OR been subjected to it? In this week’s episode we talk about what we think gatekeeping is and why we think people do it. You’ll hear our experiences of when we have (unfortunately gate kept) and (more unfortunately) gate kept other people. We also talk about how we perceive those who gatekeep and whether we think any positives can be taken from it. You won’t want to miss this one!

Should you separate the art from the artist? In this week’s episode, we talk about just that. We discuss whether the severity of the accusation or the crime makes a difference to who we listen to, whether there are any musicians we should stop giving the time of day entirely, and confess which questionable artists we still put on a private Spotify session. Well the truth is, we REALLY miss going to gigs and festivals so we thought the best way to deal with this is to go into great detail about all the negative things about live music. We talk about Natalie’s personal experiences of being a Chinese woman who is into metal and pop punk music, and share stories from other Asian music fans where they have been marginalised or othered because of how they look or where they are from. We dissect microaggressions that Asian music fans have been victims of and explore some theories of why certain people act in the way they do towards east asians. This is a very important episode and we hope you take away some lessons on how to be a better ally and support your asian friends. You’ll also find out who we think is KILLING it right now in Asian music.

In this week’s episode, we dismantle the idea that it’s “difficult for festival lineups to be diverse” by creating their very own festivals with ONLY non-males (or bands with non-males in them) on the lineup. We discuss our thoughts behind the lack of inclusion in certain festival lineups and explore how this can be improved for musicians and music fans in the future.
