#132 How To Get in The Book Of Guinness World Records
We got into the Guinness Book of Records (also Blue Peter) and we're here to show you how.
While the majority of us were learning how to bake, during the 2020 lockdown Jason set himself an ambitious goal: to break a record.
The action sports athlete combined hard work with out-of-the-box thinking to create a new challenge of unicycling while simultaneously lifting a barbell.
He broke the record for heaviest single weight lifted by barbell overhead press while riding a unicycle by lifting an incredible 68 kg (149.9 lb) in April 2021, after eight weeks of continuous training for five days a week.
Now a proud representative of Guinness World Records 2023, thanks to Rod's magnificent photograph, which was also featured all over the press.
“The book is kind of part of the fabric of our culture, really, as I think everyone has memories of the Guinness World Records as a kid at Christmas.
“And to be a very small part of that, it feels a lot more meaningful than just breaking the record itself – that was very humbling, for one, and a real honour to be part of it.”
He said that as a child, the unconventional records stood out to him “a little bit more”.
“That would catch my eye and it probably has influenced me in some way, shape or form, and I cannot believe it is still relevant,” he said.

#131 The Best Martial Arts For Fitness
Martial arts aren’t just a great way to get in shape; they can also help improve your self confidence and mindfulness, and introduce you to new cultures and friends. Many lessons taught in martial arts apply to other aspects of life.
We discuss the impact that film and television has had on introducing people to martial arts.
We look at the article from Medium.com on the 6 best martial arts for fitness:
- Capoeira
- Taekwondo
- Karate
- Escrima
- Wing Chun
- Tai Chi
We talk about our own experience with Boxing, Kick Boxing and Rod's 20 year practise of Capoeira.
We ask, which Martial Art can you eat a burger while doing? Which can you River Dance while doing?
And we end with, who would win these fantasy fights? Including Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali.

#131 The Worst Episode Ever with Dan Scott
#131 is easily the worst thing we've ever put out.
Although it's been censored, it is explicit, mainly thanks to our guest Dan Scott of Clan Fit Edinburgh, so please don't listen if you're sensitive to mature, crude and expletive riddled conversation.
We try our best to play a couple of fitness related games. Sometimes your best isn't good enough. We use our predictive text suggestions to answer some of the most pressing health & fitness questions.
We abandon that due to poor results and move on to play a vague version of Room 101, where two of us propose one thing about the fitness industry we wish to banish for eternity and the other decides which deserves the boot.

#130 The Fitness A-Z; A Complete Guide to Health & Fitness
This is the quintessential guide to health and fitness from A-Z.
Jason & Rod go through the alphabet, defining, explaining and using in a sentence, a mixture of health & fitness terms with some ludicrous gym slang to have a good laugh at.
The aim; to provide you with a glossary of definitions to help in your training and to join in on a laugh with your gym bros.
AMRAP, Broscience, Compound Exercise, DOMS, Eccentric contraction, Full Range of Motion, Gluteal Amnesia, Hypertrophy, Isometric, Juicing, Kip up, Ligaments, Mirin’, Negatives, Overtrain, Plyometrics, Quality, Rate of perceived exertion (RPE), Soy Boy, Trapzilla, Upper Body Business, Volume, Work In, Xercise & Zigzagging.
Let us know if we missed out a term you've always wondered about and maybe we'll do a part 2.

#129 Ancient Warrior Workouts; fitness from history
Were Spartan's ripped? How much could a Viking lift? Were Gladiators really vegan? What can we learn from the Ancient Greeks that can help us stay fit today?
Rod and Jason look at the fitness regimes and diets of ancient warriors and find out how they exercised for war, for functionality and for leisure.
Inspired by the History Channel show Ancient Warrior Workouts with Omar Isuf.
#128 Fitness Tribes; Cults or Communities?
Fitness Tribalism; a support network or form of indoctrination?
On episode 128 of Just The Fitness Tip Jason & Rod look into Tribalism, what it is, how it affects society at large and it's increasing presence in the fitness industry.
We look at fitness & diet tribes like CrossFit and Spartan Race, vegans and ketos.
We read 4 tips on how to start a fitness tribe.
We learn about the UK based gym credited as eco friendly and ask; do we need our gym to be aligned with our political and social views

#127 LA's most interesting man. The Fightin' Philanthropist; Andrew McGregor
Andrew McGregor is a filmmaker, Grammy nominated bagpiper, inventor, writer, chessboxing champion, entrepreneur, frequent TEDx speaker, Highlands games athlete, photojournalist, magician, Curator of MindshareLA.
He was named one of ‘LA’s 40 Most Interesting People’ by LA Weekly, was part of a team that won the SXSW Interactive Award for Activism, won the ‘Foreigner’ division of an Independence Day Chess Tournament in Kazakhstan, he was featured in the Sports Section of the ‘NY Times’, and he has even received a Certificate of Appreciation from LA’s City Council! Jason talks to Drew about how they met, how he got into Chess Boxing, his work putting robots on rats to find unexploded mines, his photo journalism work in Rwanda and how he ended up competing at over 20 Highland Games.
In his honour, we play a game where we guess if this feat of strength was performed by a person or a fictional robot.

#126 Fitness in the Metaverse
Is VR (virtual reality) & AR (augmented reality) the future of fitness?
On episode 126 of Just The Fitness Tip, Rod and Jason explore the Metaverse and how new technology is seeking to make fitness more accessible and virtual worlds more immersive. Including apps like Supernatural and Body Combat from Les Mills.
We ask, is this a step in the right direction? Is it a waste of time? Or at worst, could it be detrimental? Let us know what you think.
We watch Mark Zuckerberg's android-like conversation with developers, we read an article in the Washington Post where a journalist spends 24 hours in the Metaverse.

#125 Ego Lifting; the pros and cons of being a gym "show off"
Urban dictionary defines Ego Lifting as;
The act of lifting heavy weights for the sole purpose of impressing other people in the room. This is usually done with awful form and gratuitous grunting noises.
John: "Look at that idiot ego lifting over there."
Mike: "Omg, what a tool. He isn't even using much weight."
But can ego ever play a beneficial role in our health, fitness and wellbeing goals? Rod & Jason ask the question.
We love hip hop here on Just The Fitness Tip and without ego, we'd not have some of the greatest rap lyrics in history.
What an effort segue into an epic rap battle between Rod & Jason, including some hilarious one liners about Jason hurting his balls and Rod being the face of the Quality Meats ad campaign.

#124 The milkshake that will make you gain or lose weight based on mindset with Dr Isi Okolo
If you think your workout will make you lose weight, will it be more effective? Can one milkshake make you hungry or full based on what you're told?
#124 is all about mindset and specifically how what we believe about our workouts and diets can actually have a biological effect on our bodies.
Rod reads crap motivational Instagram posts and gets angry about 20 years old giving him life coaching. Do you find poorly translated quotes written on a stock photo of a mountain inspiring?
We're joined by special guest Dr Isi Okolo, a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow at the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC), and master of public health candidate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is also an obstetrics & gynaecology senior resident in the National Health Service in Scotland...and she's married to Rod, continuing our streak of guests who just happen to be friends/family.
Born and raised in Nigeria, Dr Isi explains how the phrase "Nigerians don't come last" has influenced her work ethic and intrinsic motivation.
Can a high achieving mindset ever be a negative?
Is there such a thing as "toxic positivity"?
Is there anything you can "Keep calm and" do, that you can't get on a poster or fridge magnet? We troll through eBay for answers.

“The total effect of anything is a combined product of what you’re doing and what you think about what you’re doing.” - Dr Alia Crum.
Today's episode is inspired by the work of Dr Alia Crum, we look into her studies including how hotel housekeepers lost weight by just believing their work was exercise and her popular milkshake experiment; where participants actually produced more or less ghrelin (a hormone secreted in the gut. People in the medical profession call it the hunger hormone. When ghrelin levels in the stomach rise, that signals the brain that it's time to seek out food.) based on what they believed they were consuming rather than the actual nutritional value of what they consumed.
Dr Crum hypothesises, the effect of food consumption on ghrelin may be psychologically mediated, and mindset meaningfully affects physiological responses to food.
#123 Gym habits we HATE
Most of us know the unwritten rules about gym etiquette but some of us violate them anyway. Here's our top pet peeves and personal dislikes about gym behaviour. Let us know yours.
On episode 123 of Just The Fitness Tip, Jason Auld & Rod Penn are joined once again by an incredibly hungover Dan Scott of Clan Fit Edinburgh.
The Space Invader; always working out too close to you.
The Hoarder; collecting all the equipment and keeping it to themselves.
The Grunter; screaming their way through every set.
The Stare Master; that one guy always making prolonged eye contact.
and many more.

#122 Gene editing; how to hack your biology
Gene editing is a pioneering area of science with the potential to eradicate diseases and hereditary genetic disorders using the bio technology known as CRISPR.
On episode #122 of Just The Fitness Tip, Rod & Jason speak to Wasequa Ayesha Mir, registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioner B.Sc, M.Sc, mBANT, rCNHC and owner of Nutrify You.
Nutritional therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional Therapy Practitioner uses a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional imbalance and help support the body towards maintaining health.
Wasequa discusses the biological and ethical repercussions of gene editing, including some of the topics discussed in the Netflix series Unnatural Selection.

#121 Are there benefits to using drugs? Part 2: DMT, LSD & MDMA
Part 2 of our drugs episodes, this time Jason & Rod talk about how high they've been.
The episode starts with Jason's classic anecdote about the pre workout supplement Craze and how it was found to contain methamphetamine.
They discuss their own personal experiences of drugs and chat in more detail about the potential useful application of psychedelics including LSD & DMT.
Mike Tyson asks "Do you know the toad?"
Jason mentions the massive amounts of MDMA he's taken yet fails to mention the recent clinical application of the drug in helping those with PTSD.
We never even got the chance to talk about weed.
We don't encourage you to take anything, not even supplements or medication that hasn't been prescribed by a professional. This is just two guys discussing their personal experiences, both good and bad.

#119 Does fitness improve your sex life? Can your sex life impact your health?
Trigger Warning: Michael Ulloa is still away so time for a sex episode.
There's a lot of language and content only suitable for adults. We will be talking about sex as it relates to fitness, both seriously and entirely immaturely, so please do not listen with anyone you deem inappropriate.
Jason is joined once again by Rod Penn and Dan Scott and although we do have a laugh, there's some great discussions points around how fitness affects our sex lives and the benefits of sex on our overall health.
We ask;
Does fitness improve your sex life?
Does how you look affect your enjoyment of sex?
How many calories does sex burn?
Does pornography have a negative effect on our mental health?
Specifically, we ask Dan;
Is this sex doll worth $7,500?
What do you look for in a sex doll and why is it robot neck?

#118 Lift with Hitler; how fascists recruit through fitness
In episode 118, we talk about how fascists are recruiting young white men through online fitness communities.
Vulnerable young men, who are likely in search of mentors, comradery and self improvement, are being targeted by far right groups and recruited into these hateful movements. We chat about the role fitness has played.
Rod Penn is back with another quiz, this time asking us, are these items of fitness clothing used by fascists to represent their believes. All we'll say is, burn your Lonsdale tops immediately.
We're also joined by special guest Dan Scott of Clan Fit Edinburgh who tells us about his new gym as well as discussing homophobia in the fitness industry, including the story of Jake Daniels, Blackpool FC player who has become the first active male professional footballer to come out as gay.

#117 Naked, with crows and Kylie Minogue; are these real Yoga classes?
Episode 117 of Just The Fitness Tip is the first without Michael Ulloa, as he takes a break for the time being. But in his place Jason is joined by two special guests.
Award winning filmmaker and Capoeira master, Rod Penn and Cece Ho, yoga instructor and reiki energy practitioner.
Rod kicks us off with a quiz; are these forms of Yoga real or fake? Play along at home.
Cece gives her opinion on the unfortunate abuse of power by some self proclaimed "gurus" and we ask whether yoga has been appropriated purely for fitness at the expense of it's cultural and spiritual significance.

#115 Calories added to menus. Will it affect you? ft Lewis from Grams
On episode 115 of Just The Fitness Tip, Michael Ulloa is replaced and upgraded by guest host Lewis from Grams & Plant Bae.
Jason chats with Lewis about the new legislation that will see calories added to menus. As a business owner, Lewis has a strong opinion on how it will affect hospitality but also whether it will do the job it seeks to do, help us all make healthy food options.
We read the Metro article that covers the potential risk to those suffering from disordered eating and read the opinion of psychologists and nutritionists as to whether this will actually help any of us stay in shape.
Do you know the seven personal wellness style? Neither did we.

#113 What makes a good Personal Trainer?
What do you look for in a PT? Trainers, what qualities do you think are essential when working in personal training?
That's today's topic. Born from one of Jason's rants, he suggests to Michael that organisation, communication and selling outweigh health and fitness knowledge when it comes to being a successful personal trainer.
We ponder why so many great trainers can't cut it when they leave a big gym chain and become self employed.
Michael stresses the importance of being able to communicate effectively with clients, including utilising social media as a way to grow relationships and not just to sell personal training.
We very briefly mention Gary Vee for the SEO but also because his theory of providing three times the value to a customer before asking for something in return, is THE most effective way to grow your fitness business.
We also look at a study suggesting only 3 seconds a day of weight lifting will increase muscle strength and we briefly make fun of 10 common fitness tips that are actually myths, including lengthening and toning muscles, muscle turning to fat and 30 day challenges.

#112 The ONE & ONLY exercise you need to do
You only need to do one exercise to achieve your goal.
We all know that's not true. But on episode 112 of Just The Fitness Tip, Jason & Michael take a look at the health and fitness professionals, publications and media outlets that suggest you only need to perform one magic movement to achieve your weight loss, strength increasing, muscle building, mental health empowering goals.
Will 20 minutes of lunges build muscle?
Will 16 rounds of med ball slams really improve your speed and agility?
Will running stairs contribute to your positive self image?
You'll have to listen to the episode to find out. We also chat about the difference between jam and marmalade.

#111 We bust health myths you thought were true
If there's nonsense misinformation on health and nutrition, who you gonna call? Mythbusters aka Jason and Michael.
On episode 111 of Just the Fitness Tip we bust the health, fitness and nutrition myths most of us believe to be true.
Inspired by Jason's Mum claiming artificial sweeteners make you fat, we decided to take a look at other commonly held misconceptions and debunk them.
Is breakfast the most important meal of the day?
Do you have to be skinny to be healthy?
Are all smoothies and juices healthy?
Do you have to track calories to lose weight?
and the answer to the question we've all been asking; do carrots help you see in the dark?

#110 Is the fitness industry lying to you?
Every major celebrity in the fitness bubble is hiding a secret from the entire world and it's taken YouTube gamer PewDiePie to expose it. The Swedish superstar made an uncharacteristic video on the lack of transparency of steroid use in the movie industry, specifically calling out actors who have gained impossible amounts of muscle to play superheroes in the Marvel cinematic universe.
On episode 110 of Just The Fitness Tip we ask, is the fitness industry lying to you about how celebrities achieve ungodly physiques and if so, is it immoral for them to profit from products or services they claim to provide results without that transparency?
Chris Hemsworth sells his Centr app, inferring it is how he manage to pack on 40lbs of muscle in under a year.
Kumail Nanjiani transformed his physique aged 40, apparently with nothing more than beetroot juice and electric shocks to his muscles.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has a lucrative partnership with Under Armour and a highly profitable energy drink based on his philosophy of "blood, sweat and respect" but is it really just tenacity and 3am workouts that resulted in the musclebound 50 year olds unbelievable gains?
Most importantly, PewDiePie has the largest YouTube audience in the world, largely made up of young boys who may know little about fitness but certainly know of these celebrities. We talk about the responsibility the media has not to spoon feed beginners with misinformation that could potentially result in long term damage, both physically and psychologically.
Thanks to James from Shredded Sports Science for his great review. Give his channel a follow if you're interested in hearing the science behind the real methods influencers and celebrities use to get in shape.

#108 "New Year, New Me": pointless or powerful?
How do you feel about New Year's resolutions? A good way to work on self improvement? Or a pointless annual exercise that always results in failure?

Whether it's to assess your goals from the prior year or just to celebrate your achievements, an annual retrospective can give us all a real boost when it comes to our health and fitness journey.

#106 Just The Christmas Tip with Lewis from Grams
It's a Christmas institution, like arguing over Monopoly or watching Jurassic Park, it's the Just The Fitness Tip Christmas special and do we have a fantastic show for you.
Jason & Michael are joined by Lewis from Grams cafe, live from Upload Studios in Edinburgh.
Jason kicks things off by introducing us to the Just The Fitness Tip Christmas gift guide. Will Lewis and Mich be happy with their very uniquely scented candles?
Michael shares some extremely rare Bailey's with us. He drank it last year, will we still be drinking it next year?
Lewis chats to us about his favourite Christmas foods and ways to eat healthy over the festive season, by telling us not to bother about eating healthy this festive season.
Of course, no Just The Christmas Tip episode would be complete without the entertainment and hilarity of the Goop Christmas gift guide, brought to you by the new age Santa herself; Gwyneth Paltrow. Including leopard print rolling papers, a mirrored tree house and a Chanel sled.
And no episode would be complete without the Tip Hop quote. It's got blasphemy, it's got a musical medley, it's even got a poorly executed version of Ronaldo's goal celebration.

#105 Have these embarrassing gym moments happened to you? Plus tips for training this winter.
On episode 105 of Just The Fitness Tip, Jason & Michael chat about how they lost the last episode and had to re-record this one.
We talk first aid courses, our Christmas special, Michael's new business venture "Nourish, Move, Maintain" and how replacing it with "mourish" would create the witty pseudo mathematical formula, M³ (you can find out more at www.NourishMoveMaintain.com).
The banter leads to a more serious question; is the fitness industry too serious? Shouldn't we be having more fun?
Our first topic is winter training and we provide tips on how to make diet and exercise easier when the days are shorter and colder.
Following up from last week's article on dark secrets of the fitness industry, we read some embarrassing gym moments like inappropriate eye contact, shaming grunters, and not wiping your machines down. Have any of these happened to you? Let us know and we'll shame you live on air.

#103 Jet from Gladiators aka Diane Youdale - from 90s TV to Psychotherapy
On episode 103 of Just the Fitness Tip, one of our dream guests and another 90s TV superstar joins us, Diane Youdale aka Jet from the TV show Gladiators.
Of course, any kids from the 90s will know Diane from Saturday night TV where she starred as Jet, regularly smashing members of the public in games of speed, strength and endurance. We chat to Diane about her time as Jet, the body image pressures of a show like Gladiators, the physical toll it took, including a serious neck injury that ended her time on the show aged just 26.
We find out about Diane's passion for understanding the mind and how it motivated her to retrain as a Psychotherapist. She tells us about her work as a counsellor and the impact she feels emotional and mental health has on our physical health.

#101 Should radio presenter get the sack for fat shaming tweets?
On this week's Just The Fitness episode 101, we ask: Should LBC presenter Steve Allen be allowed to continue his show after posting tweets criticising Strictly Come Dancing star Tilly Ramsey's weight and Gemma Collins? Is fat shaming your right to free speech or is it just malicious?
article here: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/lbc-host-steve-allen-fatshamed-gemma-collins-tilly-ramsay-b961846.html
We also discuss Lord Robathan's recent remarks that the government should tell obese people to "eat less".

#100 The Mr Motivator Interview
100 episodes of Just The Fitness Tip. What an achievement. There was only one way to mark the occasion. Something we mentioned back on episode 24 and what we've been working on solidly since episode 94; we're joined by the legend, Mr Motivator aka Derrick Evans MBE.
He talks about how we hounded him to come on the show and tells us the hounding he did to get on GMTV back in the 90s, at a time when advertisers did not want a black man doing aerobics on morning telly.
He gives us rare insight into his personal life, how he was given up at 3 months old, moving to the UK from Jamaica and growing up in Leicester. He tells us the key things that took him from being a homeless single parent in his early 20s to training Gloria Hunniford, Lorraine Kelly, Eamon Holmes and being the face of fitness for a generation.
We hear about his recent work with charities like Social Bite and starting his Motivator Club aimed at getting older people moving and caring more about their health.
He tells us what he really thinks about modern fitness personalities like Joe Wicks & James Smith, his favourite Gladiator and the biggest scoop of all, what he keeps in his bumbag.

#96 "Lose pounds, win games"; Should this football league reward teams who lose weight?
On episode 96 of Just the Fitness Tip, Michael sets Jason the task of thinking of a Gladiator name that is camp but menacing.
We talk about Man Vs Fat, the football league where you must have a BMI over 27.5 and where losing weight weekly earns your team points.

#95 The Mac Twins - The DJ duo empowering gut health in everyone
On episode 95 of Just The Fitness Tip, we speak with former Love Island DJs and Virgin Radio presenters, Lisa & Alana MacFarlane, The Mac Twins.
After volunteering to be part of the TwinsUK research at King’s College London, they founded The Gut Stuff, an online wellness platform designed to promote the importance of a healthy gut.
We ask why they went from DJing events for Simon Cowell and presenting Love Island to telling people to care more about their gut microbiome.
They make look like Gwyneth Paltrow and they certain talk a lot of sh*t but and their company isn’t part of the ‘eat like me, look like me’ brigade of mindless influencers. Instead, with the help of a wealth of experts researching this exciting new field, they tell us why they turned their back on showbiz to take a gamble starting a company their management said would "ruin their careers" in order to bring gut health to the masses.
They share tips from their book, The Gut Stuff: An Empowering Guide to Your Gut and Its Microbes, to help regulate your hormones, control your blood sugar, manage the calories that you absorb, affect your immune system and, most fascinatingly, communicate with your nervous system and you’re brain.

#93 Expectations Vs Reality; How steroids & social media create unattainable bodies
On episode 93 of Just the Fitness Tip, Jason & Michael read an article in the Hindustan Times about actress Deepika Padukone's latest Instagram post, leading to us ask the question; are our health and fitness expectations too far removed from reality?
Does social media cherry picking, filters, airbrushing and lighting create the false idea of an attainable body?
Are our favourite physiques achieved using steroids?
Are you aware of what is real and what isn't? Do you care? Are you happy for images to be posted as long as it's made clear how they've been achieved? Or do you think only unedited photos should be used in mainstream media and any use of performance enhancing drugs should be totally banned?
Is Nate Diaz right when he says "Everyone is on steroids?"
Plus we find out what Gymnasiums have to do with being naked.
Mich's obsession with Dolly Parton's theme park, Dollywood.
The Metro's latest health and fitness product "hit list" including vegan meal prep; do you care if vegan food compares itself to meat?

#90 Why 30 minutes of exercise won't counteract sitting all day
We made it to episode 90!
Today, Jason & Michael talk about the worrying new study suggesting sitting can be as bad for us as smoking. The recommended amount of exercise, 30 minutes per day, might not be enough to improve overall health for those sitting up to 11 hours per day.
We provide fitness tips on the easiest ways to add movement into your daily routine, without having to spend hours in the gym.
We also talk about Colby Watson, a man suing Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop because his vagina scented candle exploded.
Check out the article in The Metro about sitting here.
Check out the story about a man engulfed in vagina scented flames here.
#89 Should restaurants be forced to put calories on menus?
Episode 89 kicks off with the question "should restaurants be made to put calories on their menus?" after it's teased that the government could enforce a new law on establishments with over 250 employees.
Do you think this will do more harm than good? Do you think it will help you make healthier choices? Let us know.
We talk mood-based workouts and how they can help you stay consistent with your training regardless of what life throws at you.
And of course, it wouldn't be Just The Fitness Tip if we didn't mock Gwyneth Paltrow for admitting she "broke down" and ate bread.
What's a quinoa cocktail?
Is she playing a character to promote her company Goop or is this real? Jason ends the show with a Tip Hop Quote inspired by the bread breakdown.
#88 Skiing Blind - Interview with British para alpine ski racers James & Alice Luetchford

In November 2016, they competed in their first ski race for Great Britain and the rest is history.
In today's pod, we hear more from James & Alice on their relationship as partners and athletes, the sport itself and their constant fight to get funding and support after an error saw James reclassified as having had his eyesight restored.
An amazingly inspiring story for the Tip Nation, on revaluating your potential and setting goals that may seem beyond your abilities.
